Rhys' description of the man he'd encountered did not sound like anyone Zev knew or had seen in battle. Moreover, he'd been able to stroll through Sootopolis without incident until assaulting Rhys at the Dyna Tree. [break][break]

"Perhaps. At the very least, he must be new to the region. Civilians are free to enter and leave Sootopolis, but anyone already on our radar as a threat is attacked on sight." [break][break]

After passing through the curtains of vines, the men and their Pokémon rounded a bend in the path. Mismagius murmured a soft warning. Zev saw why at once. [break][break]

Each wide tree trunk, large boulder, and even the earth itself bore long, gouging slash marks. At first, they reminded him of damage made by a sword—perhaps an Aegislash. But the fact that Paradox variants of the Swords of Justice had emerged from that very chasm suggested another origin. [break][break]

"What do you make of this?" Zev asked Rhys, gesturing to the damage. [break][break]

The flash of gold from Navy's direction and the flame of a parrying strike told Zev that the Elite Four had activated his Sygna Suit. It was Zev's first time seeing it. He recognized the scale pattern of a Kommo-o. [break][break]

Iron Leaves screeched in pain as fire licked at its robotic body. The sound was high-pitched, grating, digitized—like the noise of old Internet. Zev ignored it. His Pokémon would stand its ground in battle. A swiftly deployed PSYBLADE at Navy's head proved him right. [break][break]

With an incapacitated Corvisquire and attacks that weren't dealing any damage, the police finally started listening to Navy's shouts. "What is that thing?!" one asked, even as he and his team retreated into their parked cars. [break][break]

Zev fixed his cold gaze upon one vehicle. As it started to peel away, he clenched his hand into a fist. Unnecessary. He only needed to use his mind to crush the metal frame. The car crumpled with its occupants still inside. [break][break]

Glass shattered. Tires popped. Blood oozed from the seams.

Zev waited for the Tinkaton to finish smashing the fallen log to pieces, clearing a path for them. [break][break]

"'Off in his head' could describe several members of the League," he pointed out. MATIAS SILPH came to mind, for example, but Zev doubted Rhys could have survived that encounter. "Did you catch his name?" [break][break]

The black-haired man walked through the opening made by the Tinkaton, picking his way over shards of splintered wood. Thick vines fell from the surrounding trees' branches in heavy curtains. Forward progress was slow. [break][break]

Besides the calls of birds and chirping of insectoid Pokémon, however, all was quiet. [break][break]

After several ventures into the Giant Chasm to track new and dangerous Paradox Pokémon, Zev had a better sense of the strange rainforest. Team Rocket's territory within it started to look familiar: the bends in the paths, the rivers, the steep cliffs and deep ravines. [break][break]

It made sense for him to accompany the lower ranks as protection. He didn't prefer it, but exploring the uncharted land was better than training fresh recruits or standing watch over a smuggling operation. [break][break]

Fortunately, the grunt assigned to survey a new stretch of the jungle was one with whom Zev was familiar. Some time had passed since he'd crossed paths with Rhys Collins. Zev had put the younger man out of his mind, but their last conversation came to the surface upon sight of him. [break][break]

"Have you improved since our last mission?" the Beast asked as the two set out from a research station with their Pokémon. Zev's Mismagius floated ahead, keeping an eye out for anything amiss.

When the Aegislash disengaged from the fight to protect the gathered humans, Zev's Iron Leaves seized the opening. It charged at Navy, its silver body gleaming in the sunlight. It readied a NIGHT SLASH, should the Elite Four fail to dodge or deflect the attack. [break][break]

The waste of their bullets was not lost on the police, safe behind the KING'S SHIELD. Some swore; others shouted commands. Pokéballs opened and their own forces leaped out: Growlithe, Zorua, Jolteon, Machoke, Corvisquire. [break][break]

"Enough games," Zev growled. His voice carried the hint of a discordant reverb, a harrowing note of alien origin. [break][break]

The Pokémon charged at him. Electricity and fire flew in his direction. He absorbed them both, snatching them from the very air to devour them. The Corvisquire flew overhead for an aerial attack, but a razor-tipped tendril skewered it through the wing. [break][break]

The officers' shouts grew increasingly bewildered. [break][break]

Frightened.

The first rule of contract work was never to ask questions about why a client wanted a target dead. The answer was none of Zev's business. His business was solely to complete the job as instructed and receive payment for it. [break][break]

So despite all of the woman's hints, he did not rise to the bait. Instead, he sipped his coffee from a thermos and pointed out, "A larger message that disturbs the ruling class of a nation will cost a fortune. More if you add to the number of heads." [break][break]

"Few people can afford an assassin experienced and confident enough to pull off a job like that." [break][break]

The second rule was always to find out what a client was willing to spend before offering any kind of service.

Zev fell into a contemplative silence. As far as he was aware, Team Rocket did not have an idea of the number of universes. There were possibly hundreds, if not thousands. Perhaps there was one for every alternative choice, as implied by Father Winter the Second. [break][break]

"The DRK Triad has been destroying universes. I wouldn't put it past them to have been behind METENO." Then Zev paused, recalling the report documenting Nisa Holo's interrogation. "But they were trying to warp the Tera crystals in the meteoroid away from Hoenn." [break][break]

The pieces did not fit together perfectly. He released a slight sigh of frustration. [break][break]

A wild Metagross lumbered out of the tall grass, drawing his attention away from the conversation. His Gengar surprised it with a sudden HEX. The Metagross stumbled, legs buckling. It was enough of an opportunity for Zev to throw a Pokéball.

Even before he'd reached the front entrance of the hospital, Zev had pieced together the scene outside of it as he raced past the building's windows. A handful of policemen with guns and trained Pokémon, accompanied by none other than Elite Four Navy. Zev had not expected the latter, but Navy's presence made no difference, in the end. [break][break]

It was not their first encounter, after all. [break][break]

As the Iron Valiant and Aegislash lunged at his robotic Paradoxes, Zev targeted the humans. The gun in one officer's hand lurched toward the ground, slamming into the earth before completely disintegrating. [break][break]

The bewildered woman had two seconds to shout in alarm before she, too, collapsed with abrupt violence. [break][break]

The other police fired their pistols, heedless of Navy's warning. Bullets shattered on Zev's carapace, flinging splinters of metal in all directions.

If there was one thing Zev could give humanity credit for, it was their boldness in the face of horrors. Their stubborn will to live despite the fleetingness of their existence and the odds stacked against them. The continued survival of the region hinged on such arrogance. [break][break]

THEO BECKETT was no different than his fellow man. No matter his cunning, caution, or preparation, it took a certain recklessness to stand up to forces far greater than humankind could ever comprehend. [break][break]

Not that it mattered, in the end. Neither the threat of harm to his wife nor the underboss' shameless audacity swayed Zev. The former he already expected; the latter did not impress him. Both merely reinforced his growing disdain. [break][break]

Black crystal continued its slow crawl across Zev's face. When he spoke next, his voice carried an undercurrent of alien reverb—a discordant, harrowing note. [break][break]

"Oh, we will remember," he promised; he threatened. "Our memory is longer than the lifetime of your civilization, and we do not forget. Not those who have earned our benevolence, nor those who have earned our ire." [break][break]

He tilted his head as he spared Theo a final remark. "We hope you remember that we are not your enemy." [break][break]

And then Zev turned away, his silhouette an empty void cut out of space itself. The surrounding Tera crystals, in all their glittering glory, could not illuminate the shape of him. All light that fell upon him vanished, consumed.

Assessing the battle, Zev saw that Shred was right. The Paradox Pokémon was outnumbered and overpowered. As Gliscor's SKY UPPERCUT landed, as Shred wound back his arm to throw a Pokéball, Noctowl finished the job with PSYCHOBLAST. [break][break]

A less powerful attack than the Fairy move, it ensured the long-necked monstrosity did not fall unconscious and collapse. Instead, the yellow Pokémon swayed unsteadily on four injured legs as the Pokéball bonked it on the shoulder. [break][break]

It disappeared in a flash of light. The vessel containing it wiggled—once, twice. Zev watched closely, his black carapace receding to reveal a furrowed brow and pale flesh. [break][break]

The tension in the air was so heavy he could curl his fingers around it. [break][break]

Finally, the Pokéball stilled. With a nod of his head, Zev turned away. "Good work, Zeppelin. We should return to the station and report back." He tossed a critical glance at the other man. "You look like you could use a break." [break][break]

Covering himself in wicked spikes, Zev took the full force of the Paradox Pokémon's sweeping paw. Even as it smashed him against the trunk of a wide tree, it roared in pain from the deep gouges he left in its foot. [break][break]

At that moment, Shred's Gliscor descended like a bullet. The Ground-type wrenched the long-necked monstrosity's attention away from Zev, giving the Rocket Beast time to recover. He peeled himself from the shattered trunk of the tree, unhurt. [break][break]

Once more, he whistled for his Noctowl. Finally, he heard a distant hoot, just before the bird launched a MOONBLAST at the Paradox Pokémon. It thrashed about, knocking its tail and shoulders into nearby trees. The canopy shuddered as branches cracked and fell. [break][break]

Zev dashed toward Shred, casually stopping a branch in midair as it plummeted toward the other man. [break][break]

"We need to subdue that thing and capture it," Zev said over the noise of battle. "It will cause too much damage to our research outposts if we don't." [break][break]

Crystal sealed itself over the last inch of skin, transforming him into a lightless silhouette cut from the very fabric of space. Only the piercing blue of his eyes remained, bright pricks against the darkness like the last vestiges of dying light. [break][break]

He launched himself at Illeana, warping gravity, crossing the long distance between them in a single bound. As he descended, he swiped at her with wicked claws, hoping to catch them on soft flesh. Hoping to spill rich blood. [break][break]

At the same time, a wormhole opened above them. Blade-like claws emerged, first one hand and then another. The terrible, angular body of Necrozma's shard surfaced into their dimension like a nightmare from between the stars. The full spectrum of colors flashed across its prism-eyes. [break][break]

Its alien screech pierced the air, a challenge to its counterpart.
