Irony isn't lost on him either... where is he? Was that the same thing he said back then? When he left. Ash scowls ahead, not turning to face him. Part of him wants to lie, and say Isaac just up and died so Jay wouldn't feel this. But instead, he retorts. "Gone."[break][break]

It comes from his lips so naturally, so deadpan, so unapologetic. Because he doesn't want Jayden to focus on it. To focus on this pain.[break][break]

Of course it had to be his good nature. His guilt that carried Jayden. And even as he would help walk, even as he agreed to help walk out, Ashley knew he only did it because he didn't want to acknowledge this. The elephant in the room. The weight on his shoulders, figurative and literal. The fact this was likely the second time.[break][break]

"Easy. Not all at once... can't have you dying on me." He should have walked away. He wanted to. But he doesn't.[break][break]

Hypocrite.[break][break]

The quiet steps forward, Ashley scowling ahead, it doesn't stop. This hatred is pointed inward. He failed to do something so easy before, and let his friend go. Let his friend become what he was now. Worse, now it was just going to spiral out of control.[break][break]

"Wherever he is is no longer your concern. Your concern is to heal. And if you don't, you're gonna bleed out before it even becomes your concern again." There's the friend. The Ash to the Jay. The guy who will keep his dumbass from ending himself. The realist in his brain that tries to ground Jay. Back then, he probably did so well at it... now? He doesn't even know.

Of course he had to wake up. Nothing could take him out of his head harder than the circumstances aligning against him. Ashley could feel himself curse, and just... turn back with a single glance to Jay. And worse. That name.[break][break]

For Ash.[break][break]

"Yeah. Me." He tightens his grip, and presses on. His silver eyes are forward, and he keeps pulling Jay along the way, wanting to get to the medical bay sooner than later. Trotting through this hallway was a nightmare. The coward part of him wanted to be gone.[break][break]

Guilt drives him forward more. He can't just leave Jay to die. The only way he can feel good about what went on... is...[break][break]

The same thing he wanted on Meteno. He feels bittersweet in his own contradiction. When he begged Isaac to end him, to free him to finally be out of this hell, but when refused, forced to look ahead... all it did was prove to Ash what he already knew but was too stupid to realize.[break][break]

He had a reason to keep going.[break][break]

"Gonna drop you off at the medbay. Okay, Jay?" He doesn't want to look. He's still running from it. He can prolong it all just a little longer, can't he?[break][break]

Is that fair though? The lie? Is it fair for him to lie?[break][break]

"Come on, you heavy bastard. Can you walk any?"[break][break]

He gives a soft smile.

How long has he been back in Hoenn? A few days? A week? How much things change. How little things change.[break][break]

He took a vacation with kepler brueshaber, to leave it behind. To clear his head. The suffering had to end. He made a promise to leave Rocket, yet he wanted to stay. He had things here he wanted to protect. To save. The League wasn't enough, but Rocket was showing their hand. The sinister hand of declan walsh holds them taut, like leashes on war dogs, ready to let loose. The worst of them, the bloodiest, the ones who can rise the ranks and show their hands.[break][break]

The call comes. jayden cross was stabbed. He was downed by Isaac Merlo. It feels like the world flips him on his head. His mistake. His fault. His pain. All of it, reflective to Isaac at that moment. He stabbed Jay, just like Ash did years upon years ago. And it offered the opportunity to leave.[break][break]

To leave Jay to the wolves again. He could be free. He could take Kep with him. Hell, now was the right time for it, he could do it. Have the life he always wanted... that those fleeting memories let him believe.[break][break]

His eyes move to the crown shard he has... he clinches it in his hand. It'd be so easy...[break][break]

Why wasn't it that easy?[break][break]

He knows why...[break][break]

It becomes clear when he finds Jayden in the mound of blood. The same way he left Jayden years ago. The same way, stabbed the same way, left the same way... Isaac didn't know it at the time. How could he? He basically replayed what Ashley did, only difference was how much more pain it puts him through. The reason he can't just... do that anymore. He can't let Jay die... but he... can't agree with Rocket.[break][break]

With an arm thrown over Ashley's shoulder, Ashley begins the long, hopeless trek back. Knowing full well that no matter how much he wants to, the day he'd have to pick a side was coming.[break][break]

Running away doesn't fix this.[break][break]

Running away just complicates everything. It delays the decision. Cillian Quinn's words burn in his mind. Where does Ashley draw the line?[break][break]

A lesson he should have learned years ago... that he learned last year. He's so fucking tired of running from his problems.

A big red winter coat. It's more Ash-sized than Kep-sized, but it comes with a scarf, and is lined with wool. The hood helps protect from the cold. Attached, a single orange feather like a charm. Another note. "Remember when I took you ice-skating? It was something I wanted so badly, and you went with even though my arm was broken. Here... I may not be able to enjoy the ice and snow this year. But you can bundle up. PS. That feather cost more than the jacket, especially because I can't quite remember everything. It's a replica. I hope it gets you closer to what you were looking for."

Zev was like an immovable object, barely even reacting at all. Uncaring, and it had been the thing Ashley had feared most. And it was what he had failed to become just like. That was the line in the sand between them. The line Cillian had told him to draw for himself. He refused to be that. He tasted the fruit, and spat it back out.[break][break]

Reinhardt takes a moment to turn his head towards Ashley. He had finally woken up. But far too late for either of them to make notes of it. Ashley, now barely able to move that leg without immense pain, needed a way out. Before Ashley knew it, the beast would grab Ashley and throw him out of the door... as the tendrils moved to skewer every part of him, slicing into every organ they could through the softest parts of flesh.[break][break]

And with it... in his last breath, happy to see Ashley safe... Reinhardt dies. Knowing that Ashley wasn't lost after all. A victory afforded to him far too late. Reinhardt was gone with a smile on the their face being the last thing Ash sees of him.[break][break]

"REINHARDT! REINHAAAAAARDT!!!"[break][break]

His hand throws outwards. He can fight Zev, he can still save him. He can still fight.[break][break]

From her Pokeball, a little white Zorua bursts out by herself, digging her claws into Ashley. And within a moment's notice, they disappear together into a ghastly world. The first time the little one had ever used it.[break][break]

And they disappear together... all while the despairing noises of Reinhardt's trainer can no longer be heard.[break][break]

The price of freedom sure is steep.

- In one ditch effort, Reinhardt the Nidoking throws Ashley through a whole ass door to burst out the other end, just as he is skewered alive. He dies with a smile on his face.[break]
- Ashley is screaming for Reinhardt, as Cocoa the Hisuian Zorua bursts from her ball.[break]
- With a claw dug into Ashley, now wanting to go back in to fight back, she uses PHANTOM FORCE to pull Ashley out of this.[break]

This was it then. The last step before the gallows. Just enough rope, and Ashley could see where it led now. Over the edge. Zev's fatal words, and a blade about to pierce and puncture the heart. With one motion, Zev pulls the blade out of Ashley's leg, and levels it towards the heart. And thrusts forward.[break][break]

Was this really it then? The end of the road? To let the floor drop, and struggle for oxygen to fill his lungs? He could see it. He won't make it to the floor.[break][break]

Closer.[break][break]

His life plays like a record. The first moment he met jayden cross, burnt into his mind. The moments they had. Their friendship together. Their missions. Supportive to one another. A bad family, a lack of one. Friends forever... a slash through the shoulder to sever the bond.[break][break]

Closer.[break][break]

He thinks of Isaac Merlo, the moment they met on the beach. He still remembers that goofy fossil, dancing on the beach. How they spoke of the past, and promised to be there for each other... the knife that drove its way upwards. The conscience that stayed with him, even as the barrel of a gun aimed towards his birthright, trained in poison by poison.[break][break]

Closer...[break][break]

He thinks of his regrets... he thinks of Sunshine's sass. @milo's catty eyes. Naia Kayode's emotionless gaze. Eris Halla's happiness over a big Wooper. Shalin Nariya flying a Yanmega happily. The SPECTRA exams with that psychotic sword guy Hitoshi Inoue, and the brain of the team Selena Desmarais. He thinks of THEO BECKETT's words. Telling him to be free, just a year ago... how he had become enslaved to his own past, the thorns that pulled him under. How Cillian Quinn had told him to tow the line, to find where to draw it in the sand, to keep himself sane. He thinks of his half-sister, who he'll never get to meet now.[break][break]

And then... he thinks of sushi. The Slowpoke that died for him... and how it led to the first time he met kepler brueshaber. The way he smiles... the way he cries... the promise he made to always come back. He has a reason to live. He's always had a reason to live. He didn't want to die, he didn't want to die, he doesn't want to die, he can't die not now not ever never never never-[break][break]

His eyes widen, moments from the end. With every ounce of strength he had in his good leg, he pushes himself to the side, tumbling out of the way from the blade meant for him, taking a nasty cut to the side as he does, and rolls as well as he can, bleeding from the leg wound, and now from the side, adjusting himself as best as he can, before tossing out his Nidoking, who steps forward, readying a roar.[break][break]

"I'll admit this-" He looks almost frenzied, leaning against Jayden's own desk as his pulse goes faster, enough so that he grabs at his chest, breathing in air like he had held his breathe for minutes upon minutes.[break][break]

"-I'll take on every Rocket if I have to in order to stay alive. And once I get out, I'm mounting declan walsh's head on a spike." Reinhardt roars at Zev, putting a wedge between Zev and Ashley.[break][break]

He can hope. But now what?

- Throwing himself out of the way of the blade, taking a nasty gash to the side, he rolls to Jayden's desk before releasing Reinhardt.[break]
- Reinhardt the Nidoking stands between himself and Zev. And Ashley makes a declaration. He'll take on all of Rocket if he has to. And put Declan's head on a spike.[break]

There's a half-kinship he feels to Milo, shown by how unaffected he was by the taiyaki half-bitten from. The sweet potato filling has him relax his shoulders. The taste is sweet.[break][break]

Alright. He made the promise. And Milo even notes he wouldn't narc. That was enough for Ashley to trust him. He knew he could. He could Milo into this, or well, helped him.[break][break]

"I intend to leave Rocket."[break][break]

He says it flat, this alleyway away from everything, as he leans against the wall of a nearby stall, silver eyes downcast. It's... not a pleasant conversation. He never wanted to have it, but with Rocket acting so much worse than the League, and scarlet-stained guilt that drags him further and further downwards...[break][break]

"But I can't yet. Not without kepler brueshaber. Not without jayden cross. I won't leave him this time." The memory from a long, long, looong time ago burns hotter now, as he grabs at his face. Made worse by the fact that now, he had openly stated it. To someone newer. And now... he just hoped that bridge didn't burn.[break][break]

He just hoped that Milo would keep to his word. Funny things, words.

It makes it worse when his hair is let go, only to meet the back of Zev's hand, Ashley's face flinching to the side. The only solace was that it didn't hurt even half as bad as the wound in his leg right now. He can take a lot of punishment, but this was beyond everything.[break][break]

Disheveled strands of hair over his face, he takes a moment to catch his breath. Zev's words were an offering. The bad cop's little plea bargain that would lead to the hanging.[break][break]

Instead of panic, a bout of fury paints his gaze, a glare beyond, as his eyes squint. If he takes the deal, there's no telling what Zev will do to him. If he doesn't, the end goal is clear. For himself. For Kep. For Hoenn. The future ahead is dark... and he doesn't know how to put it to words. But he looks at the engagement ring on his finger... and he smiles.
