The pain never really went away. He's trying his best to keep it together, but putting that thought to the back of his head. His heart's not in it.[break][break]

"Law." The Kubfu stops their onslaught, slapped backwards into a tumble on the SPIRIT BREAK, as the Kubfu attempts to guard himself. Too late to Counter.[break][break]

So, as he slides back, the Kubfu halts, and holds both paws up.[break][break]

If he can't COUNTER then, he will now. He readies to slam a paw down, if the Iron Valiant comes at him.[break][break]

"Hold your ground." He whispers. Enough that the Kubfu is at the ready.[break][break]

Another battle to be fought, and another one to see what the world had for him.[break][break]

Ash isn't terribly confident, and walking into the match with a cane, he would walk with a bit of a limp thanks to the wound he got from Zev Harcourt, and smiles as he approaches. A hand out to his opponent. Thankfully, not a ghost from the past.[break][break]

"Ash." He responds with a smile, and reciprocated handshake. Silver eyes look up to her, his Kubfu on his shoulder. "Good luck. Hopefully, it's me but-" he turns his head. "-we'll see where that goes."[break][break]

Law moves towards the center of the ring, ready to fight whatever came his way. The little Kubfu strikes a pose.

The rain continues to pour, and Law attempts to make an impact with the IRON HEAD, only to be smashed into a MOONBLAST, sent backwards, through a bunch of tumbles, an Akira-slide against the stadium floor. A crack of thunder up above sounds off. A COUNTER prepared if that came again.[break][break]

Wiping the bruise away, the Kubfu begins to run, sliding onto the wet stadium floor, in an attempt to rocket forward. Now wasn't the time to hold back.[break][break]

Silver eyes peer out. Unfeeling, unhurt now. Ashley needed just a moment to get it together. "Close Combat, hit from as many angles as you can." The little bear begins an onslaught, an Ora-Ora-Ora with an intent to make as many tiny hits devastating as possible in return, in a short burst. Even if his DEFENSE lowers, the CLOSE COMBAT would have to make up the difference.[break][break]

His eyes pricked with tears... what was this? A cruel mirror? A reflection of someone he knew dearly? He hadn't seen her in so long, and yet-[break][break]

All he can do is smile painfully, pull his hoodie up, and nod. Shit day for rain...[break][break]

Law holds his paws out in stance, getting in a very counter-y stance, as Ash feels himself hold back. His heart breaks more, but as he hides his silver eyes, he nods. "So it is..." To help with the rain that was coming for his eyes...[break][break]

"Go, Law. Give her a show." With a quick foot downwards into the stadium with a FOCUS ENERGY, the Kubfu races forward, speeding ahead and racing to slam his head into the Iron Valiant with an IRON HEAD, to start this fight off with a helluva bang.[break][break]

The whole time, Ash is biting his bottom lip.[break][break]

Things haven't gone so hot since the whole defection thing. Since then, Ashley has had to resort to using a cane for a majority of the year of 2024. It sucked. But, at least he was alive. He had to wind down, stay low.[break][break]

Even as he limps out into Lilycove, the man just keeps alow profile best he can. A sweater worn, as he smiles at Law, his little Kubfu who is busy practicing kung-fu.[break][break]

His opponent arrives, and his blood runs cold.[break][break]

Piercing silver eyes... the mirror's edge that night had split them apart. Each a side of the mirror now. Standing in opposition now, but even as Ashley knows what he wants to do, he hesitates. The older Ash reaches for his carton of cigarettes. He knows what's coming.[break][break]

"No, Jay. I'm leaving Kanto." Sulky silver eyes betray confidence, but a hand pushes the offered one away, the other tightens his resolve on his bag strap.[break][break]

Some time, in those long, long years as Sawyer, Ashley lost Jayden. And now, seeing the result of him becoming a Rocket to begin with, he would live with that guilt for the rest of his life. He was the monster, that looked away. He let declan walsh win. Sawyer didn't care about anyone back then. Sawyer didn't care for anyone now.[break][break]

That Ash cared about that Jay though. If tear-pricked eyes didn't give that away already from the younger one here.[break][break]

"Nobody will miss me."[break][break]

Hypocrisy from trembling lips, trepidation freezing the heart, and subduing it. The break was coming. Older Ash knows there's only one way to cut that tie. Younger Ash is too naive to want that ending now.[break][break]

"Thanks for being my friend, Jay." A smile forged upon the warped steel of heartbreak. A love, lost and never to resurface. By whatever means that may be.[break][break]

A mistake that haunts me to this day.

In that regard, they had been similar. Jubilee's death had been the first real death that Ashley had ever felt. That had reverberated so hard to his very core. Seeing that part of himself, false bandages to appear fine, dyed red in their facade. Fallen at the edge of society, sharper than any knife... who knows where they landed?[break][break]

Even as Jay grips the hand holding the mirror, to soothe him in the moment, but that edge was what split them apart.[break][break]

"Jay... I can't do this anymore..." Pity sharpens that refractal blade further, inches away. Cowardice dulls it, unable to connect.[break][break]

That's when...[break][break]

The head turn down the hall of his own mind. The memories of the growing Ash. The perfect Rocket. A facade, a mask, cracked at every edge, placed on the face to be the perfect tool. The lapdog named Sawyer. A name he scowls at now, so much now. As he takes each step forward, he can see images of himself, dragging down the hall the three targets Theo asked for him at seventeen. Each mission, silver eyes dull with each success. A step closer, an inch further. All it would take is a push, and he'd never be here.[break][break]

Twenty-one was a triple seven. Goes to show how shit his luck really was. Walking on, walking on... there he is. Bag on his back, green jacket and everything. Hair was up too. He began to walk towards the exit of their Kanto HQ. A traitor.[break][break]

No one would have missed me. Except you. His eyes turn towards the exit. As do the newly adult Ashley's. Silver eyes staring with pain at the sight before him.[break][break]

"Jay." Ashley doesn't need to see his younger's facial expression to know what he looks like right now. The only person between himself, and the exit. The only thread that tied him to Rocket now, the only thing keeping him on stable footing at Rocket.[break][break]

"I'm leaving." the younger Ashley says.

No matter how much Jayden says he won't die, that means jack shit when he's bleeding like this. That wound was bad. But each step, pulling Jayden to safety, away from the embrace of icy cold death, silver eyes turn. And he comments. "You can thank Cillian Quinn too." If it wasn't for his message about Isaac Merlo and Jayden's condition, Ashley wouldn't have come.[break][break]

He still didn't want to. Leaving it to be would multiply the dead men behind him, that follow him with ankle-clad shackles, slowing him down until they pull him under. But declan walsh had broken him sufficiently enough in one talk. When he struck Jayden for allowing Ashley to live.[break][break]

When he told Ashley he didn't care about Jay at all.[break][break]

A swish around his mouth has the thought formulate in his mind. Part of him wonders if Jayden meant how he knew about Jayden's pain... or Isaac's betrayal. Or both. Feigning ignorance would do nothing, side-stepping the problem would only make it come up faster.[break][break]

"I was in Alola with kepler brueshaber, Jay." He stares at Jayden, and raises a brow. It's not a lie, but it isn't divulging the truth of a conversation shared between the blood brothers. "You know that. I got back maybe, what, a few days ago? Haven't seen much of him lately." Also, not a lie.[break][break]

He was never all that good at lying.

The sheer audacity of what Jay says pisses him off so far, that he's close to grabbing him by the collar and punching him. He's so close to snapping, but he refrains. If thi sis what Jay feels, he'd shatter that.[break][break]

That's complicated though... there's a part of him that still feels it. He grumbles. A shake of his head... and now, a new task.[break][break]

Underboss Fiorelli had a trial going on. And Ashley looked at the manila on the desk, and stares. He moves to grab it, reads through it... shuts it, and nods.[break][break]

"Fine." He turns on his heel. About to barrel out this office... when he turns back.[break][break]

One last word. "For what it's worth? I'm glad you're alive." That's just about it though. After this disagreement. And with the door shutting behind him...[break][break]

Silence.

Recovery was hell. It always felt like hell.[break][break]

Between the leg wound that he had gotten in interrogation, the chest pain, and all the bandages and lost Pokemon, Ashley wasn't do anything for awhile. In fact, the doctor had even stated how he was going to need time to recover. Three months or so.[break][break]

Where'd they hear that before? The irony of the moment just has him wince. Usually he bounces back, but for awhile, he's using a cane to walk around while his leg actually heals. And as for the chest pain, the bandages keep getting traded out.[break][break]

"Not so far." He turns his head back, seeing a little Skwovet scurry around with a big mouth full of nuts.[break][break]

Ashley isn't amused. Not completely with it. His facial expression darkens at the squirrel. "We'll find him." He reassures, holding a hand out for Kep and smiling softly. Even if he did feel like he didn't deserve to even smile at him with what he put Kep through.

It's an addiction, really. A feeling he knows well. Everything doesn't make sense in Hoenn right now, for here, things do. He'd continue kissing and doing little else on this hammock, but they did need to address it.[break][break]

Chocobo first. A mission, a personal one to find the bird. And Ashley, hands a little more full, has him nod in kind. "Tell me about it. Feels like every day, a new legend comes knocking on our door." He sighs, brows twitching. But in his desperation to find Chocobo... a hand cups Kep's cheek, a loving look of silver. "I'll help you every step of the way."[break][break]

Now as for that last name...[break][break]

"Would you have preferred Kepler Sawyer?" A little catty, he gets a smug look on his face, the name sounding infinitely worse than Shepard. "Or maybe Ashley Brueshaber?" He finds himself almost trip up the surname.[break][break]

Maybe his hand moves a little more to firmly grasp what he's holding. Not the one on his cheek. Well. Not the cheek on his face, anyways.[break][break]

"Hey."[break][break]

He lovingly kisses Kep's cheek. "Anything you want to do first while on vacay?" He honestly doubts breaking the hammock in is the first on the docket. Ash had been wrong before.

Apartment is too smell? Immediately, Ash is referring to what kepler brueshaber taught him. "You know, you can box'em, right? My boyfriend taught me that recently." He chortles out, turning on his heel, and giving the other Galarian Rapidash the biggest pets. He felt so human in this moment. Like... Rocket was so far away.[break][break]

Huh. Maybe he should go on a vacay.[break][break]

This guy... Ashley likes him. Can't put his finger on it. It felt so amicable. Pleasant. "Really? What with what happened to Kanto and all?" How old was he anyways... eh. As Ashley climbs atop his own steed, now a much easier steed to ride, there's a pleasantness to the ride, as Ashley hums quietly.[break][break]
