A soft smile tugs at their mouth. Despite their coy nature, their face flared with color—not caused by the results of their mischievous actions for once.[break][break]

It is all because of the words Jayden speaks.[break][break]

“You are terribly sentimental, did you know?” they trade in a quiet murmur, withdrawing just enough for their eyes to flit down to slightly reddened lips and then back up to that bright, inviting shade of plum.[break][break]

And then they’re drawn back in, and they let their wants and desires unfurl as they sigh at the feeling of warm hands finding skin. If their clothes are rumpled along the way, Fern doesn’t care. They don’t care how disheveled they may seem returning to the festivities.[break][break]

Those are far out of mind as their head lolls to the side in quiet invitation as they lean against the display. The glimmer of jewels behind them, but entirely unable to fixate their attention on the loveliness of them.

Their comm is nestled against an ear they’re unaccustomed to. The other is still padded with bandaging under their half helm, muffling sounded and tilting their balance in a way they don’t care to admit bothers them. Sets them on edge. But Walsh’s message still comes through crisp and clear.[break][break]

They have their own misgivings, of course. The weasely feline stirs a familiar resentment and discontent in them that harkens back to each time they’ve traveled the border. It’s something they’d much rather repel from. The shield of Galar is something he’s only heard distant stories of. Tales from childhood that have long been forgotten float to the surface of their memory. But an order is an order.[break][break]

They’ll sooner defend zamazenta than the other, though.[break][break]

“What are you doing?” the question blurted to jayden cross doesn’t come through the comms, but over his shoulder where Fern hangs on behind him, having flown in together. Cold air whips at their hair and ruffles the clothing under their gear with a chill that can only be meant to cut to the bone. Given little time to coordinate, they do their best to work with what they can as icy snow begins to whip up around them when the other admin beckons their ride into the thick of the avalanche.[break][break]

Frosty stiff fingertips lift to their mouth in the moments before the roaring moon nosedives to whistle sharply. The sound lifts through the air above the tumult, and sends Cecilia sailing in from behind them to keep pace with the larger dragon. At their call, a swell of pale, glowing begins to gather around the dragapult’s lithe body as she summons old draconic power to her aid.[break][break]

Where the attack from jayden cross ’s roaring moon seeks to uproot the earth under the clashing forces split them apart, Fern’s dragapult pulls down hunks of burning rock from the sky—air and earth on a collision course as a fury of DRACO METEOR plummets through the onslaught of snow and ice.

Fern exhaled a slow breath as the tag seemed to take effect. As the rest of the chaos was dispelled by the efforts of the gengar and shadow gardevoir, he could feel an unspoken knot of tension ease in his chest.[break][break]

Marza’s sharp gaze cut to Fern’s and his own shifted away, his arms folding. “Don’t look at me.” The flit of his glance moves to jayden cross instead. Coupled with their independent visit, and the tensions that linger, their desire to be here now is minimal.[break][break]

Brusquely, they fix their attention on the returning sableye. “Wonderful job, Sidhe.” The gremlin holds up the now defunct tag to him, only to snatch it away again at the last second with a little cackle. Whatever, the tiny poltergeist can squirrel it away with the other slew of treasures he knows she’s been hoarding in some corner of his house. A treasure for her success.

Why? They’re uncertain. They don’t ascend to the rift split across the sky above Sky Pillar. They simply…wander. The old ruins of the draconia people are quiet. Maybe it’s what they’re looking for in the wake of their injuries, in the wake of their frustrations. Their mounting resentment and fear of the unknowns that swirl around the region.

The roaring moon they’ve acquired is a beautiful creature, but still no exception to the rule. It is still an unknown and it trusts him as little as he trusts it. It did not graft to them as instantly as the flutter mane did. Perhaps that’s why he’s set it loose to the sky, watching it spiral around the pillar as it rises higher.

Maybe they’re both seeking something here. Maybe it’s better understanding. Maybe it’s a swan dive.

Not anticipating the pause in her steps, Fern nearly bumped into her just outside of the door. Half expecting her to remark on what they were aiming to bag for their excursion, what she said instead certainly had him listening keenly.[break][break]

“I’m listening…” Both of his brows lifted as she began, feigning nonchalance that he saw through with more ease than he normally might’ve. There was a particular twist to her tone that told him that it wasn’t usually difficult for her to put on airs. Of course, when she elaborated, the lightbulb went off.[break][break]

“You’ve got your work cut out for you, I’m afraid,” Fern replied with a peel of quiet laughter as he followed her into the showroom. A gloved hand traced over the glass cases idly, as if tracing for dust that wasn’t there because this displays were obviously kept in meticulous order.[break][break]

Oh, this was fascinating. What a lucky die Marza Volchitsa had cast to wind up with a clever woman like Mei drawn to her. And of course, his grumpy companion was squandering her chances. Typical. He sighed forlornly, but the upward twist of his mouth was mischievous, “Yes, I put that together.”[break][break]

He paused in front of a particular case, feeling for the lock on it so that he might then evaluate the proper tool he’d need. “It took me ages to make her come around, and that was just to befriend her. Ha!” His sableye is released to scurry along in the shadows–keeping a look out.[break][break]

In the lowlight, his glance turned back toward Mei. “I suppose, first and foremost, how are you wanting to go about…well, whatever it is you’re wanting?” Casual? Not so much? With someone like Marza, it probably mattered. Unfortunately.

It seemed their opportunity for conversation had come to a premature close. What an unfortunate turn of events for Fern, who had managed to get nowhere with their reticent co-admin.[break][break]

“Oh,” they trilled airily, with the slightest edge of dryness at the announcement, “excellent.”[break][break]

As if they wouldn’t take the opportunity to prepare. But even then, their arm automatically came up to shield their face from the door when it’s blown inward in little bits. Fern peeked over the crook of his elbow to see the gallade that had surged forward to shield them.[break][break]

It was no more than a sideways glance before they swept their other hand at Nim. “Push them back.”[break][break]

The hisuian typhlosion thundered forward, Twisting to all fours as she spewed a line of fire toward the league affiliates attempting to storm the room. The FLAMETHROWER held little regard for what might’ve been flammable.

“Seems doable enough.” With any hope it’d be a quick in and out foray. But there was never any guarantee with this place, they’d come to understand in their varied trips here. “Language, hm? It would make sense, I suppose. Whether it was ancient, or one belonging to the dead alone.”[break][break]

He can admit that it’s fascinating stuff, despite any wariness he holds. Maybe at one point he’d been much more gung-ho to march headfirst past the rift into the expansive unknown between life and death. But that had long been subdued. Which was saying something for Fern, who had grown up running around the darkened corners of Glimwood Tangle as a kid, and made friends in the ghosts he found.[break][break]

“Sure. You won’t hear me keeping quiet about it.” Fern doesn’t disagree with that assessment. Even now, there’s a buried part of him that’s reluctant to venture within the border again. He can take cues from Temp, however, and it becomes easy to smile back as they forge ahead.[break][break]

“What sparked your interest in assisting this particular endeavor? If you don’t mind my asking.”

Fern is, admittedly, already feeling pretty good by that point. In all truth, they should probably be wrangled and contained with the vigor that they drink down the cocktail that had been handed off by Marza. But no, they could not be stopped. This was their moment to put their money where their mouth is. And they would, thank you very much, Marza![break][break]

If there was any attempt for Jayden and Marza to have a sound conversation, it was likely thwarted by Fern’s whining for spare chips. Drink momentarily abandoned on the edge of a card table, both hands were held out pitifully like a pauper child begging for some bread. When Jayden used sleight of hand to produce the requested chips, Fern’s begging was abandoned. “Oooh, how’d you do that?” they asked as they swiped at the chips like a greedy weasel. “Thank youuuu~”[break][break]

They leaned up and bestowed an obnoxious kiss on his cheek, lou mmwah sound and all.[break][break]

When the question is turned back on them, they consider. Their brows furrow together. “Sometimes. Usually it’s just daydreaming, though.” A fanciful what if. To be truly honest would be to acknowledge the fact that Fern flourished under attention, and it was entirely likely that they wouldn’t be able to wrap their head around a concept like intentional monotony.[break][break]

So they laugh as they look up at him. “I might be just a bit too loud for that.”[break][break]

The party is mostly forgotten by Fern, in favor of focusing on what is directly in front of them.[break][break]

The brush of hands against skin elicits a shiver, goosebumps prickling along their arms from the thrill that comes with this. It’s easy to curve into that touch, to unspokenly request more.[break][break]

“Will you now?” they coo back—not that they’re too concerned with an answer as their hands find his face to pull him in for another kiss.

[attr="class","star2"] Part of Fern is still in the ultra deep sea. It’s where they collapse, so it’s naturally where they think they come to. There’s no sense for how long they’ve been out, or who might be diligently waiting for them to wake up. All they know is that they were in danger and they were in pain, and they can’t stay in this weird room with its fluorescent lights and white-washed walls.[break][break]

"fern? fern? you're okay. i'm here."[break][break]

The voice floats through their immediate panic, causing their head to jerk in his direction. But it’s muffled. Like their ears are plugged, or they’re underwater. Chest heaving and brain fuzzy, they process the voice, and the face looking back at them. They know who it is, but fear is a powerful thing to awaken immediately drenched in.[break][break]

They see him, but they don’t really see him.[break][break]

“Too hot. Where am I? Need to get out of..here..”[break][break] they mutter, as they look around wild eyed and frantic.[break][break]

Heat prickles under their skin. As Fern stares at him, they feel…imbalanced. Off in some capacity. Their hands lift, and try to claw at the monitor cords they’re hooked to. The IV drip. The swath of bandages covering their damaged hand, the side of their head.[break][break]

It’s only when they look down to see their bandaged hand preoccupied by his that something clicks in Fern’s head. He’s found them, after all. “Mischa? I feel wrong.”

“I can understand that. It probably helps with balance, even out of skates. Not that I’ve ever really had balance issues.” In fact, the few times they’ve skated, they’ve taken to it quite easily.[break][break]

The kiss is well met, which pleases them endlessly. There is no one around to pay them any mind. Or to scold them for public misbehavior. And after all, as of right now, it’s only a kiss. Hands drifting across their face warms the skin there, and coaxes a shiver along their spine.[break][break]

“Just felt like it.” The words are muttered, pressed against his mouth as they kiss him again. His bottom lip rolling between their teeth as they nip at it playfully.[break][break]

Seafoam eyes flit up to his, bright with mischief and affection in equal parts.[break][break]

“But yes. Let’s go sometime.”
