From what he could tell at the time, jayden cross hadn’t seemed to think any less of Marza for being unconscious and injured. It was difficult to read him at times, yes, but disapproval hadn’t been something he’d ever sensed from the admin. Not that telling Marza as much would do anything to reassure her. Not if she was wrapped up in how she thought it would be perceived, because weakness was how she would perceive it as.[break][break]

So he did his best to soothe the offended sting he felt. It didn’t fully work, but he couldn’t properly stay cross with her, either. He huffed, arms still folded as he looked away petulantly. “It didn’t need asking. It was a given.” What was so complicated about that? Whether she considered him the same or not, she was a friend to him. A partner in crime. He could’ve easily made himself scarce and left her behind to rot on the mount. A younger Fern, who’d only ever looked out for himself and his own hide probably would’ve done that.[break][break]

But he’d come to appreciate the benefit of their working together. He cared, eugh. How sentimental was that? She thought he was a weakling, and to an extent, that was true. Emotional and clingy, also true– but until recently, he’d never really held attachments. He was all show. Smoke and mirrors, nothing solid or longstanding.[break][break]

Simply put: she should consider herself special.[break][break]

Still, rather than continue to coddle her, he watched in silence as she berated herself to rise, eyes narrowed. “You’re welcome.” Dryly spoke when she finally took his offered hand. “He’s in my garden, terrorizing my polteageist.” She’d be able to see as much quite clearly from the wide window in his kitchen that looked out over the back garden as he moved to a container on the counter to prise it open. “I made soup. Special soup, if you will.” Though it wasn't really actually all that special. Just something his da had called it when he was a sick kid refusing to eat.

That leaves her free to continue snooping around the space while he turns back to Theo’s set up.[break][break]

“And thank you too,” he says as he takes the fishing rod. Holding it a bit awkwardly and more like a sword or a baseball bat because…has he ever held a fishing rod before? He can’t recall.[break][break]

“Uhhh right.” Fern mimics the actions as Theo does them, but when it comes to casting his line, he way overshoots.

"PLAY ROUGH again, darling!" he trills to the mimikyu, who drifts forward. Zooming around in a zig zag before tripping up the larger dragon type by the ankles. Fern tosses out a pokeball as it comes crashing down.[break][break]

Fern claps his hands together and whirls back toward Theo, "Now, where were we?"

"Marza! What was that for?" he scoffs, mouth open as he turns back toward the other once she's chucked the little gimmighoul across the water like a stepping stone. Tutting and clicking his tongue on the roof of his mouth, he recalls his mimikyu, because she won't be needed for the time being. "No sense of panache, whatsoever," he huffs as he climbs aboard as well. But when he cuts his glance toward her, there's a hint of a smile at the corners of his mouth. He's aghast, but for the time being, the heightened, churning emotions of negativity seem to have dissipated for a bit.[break][break]

At least for him, anyway.[break][break]

"You're gonna get yourself cursed like that," he adds after a moment, once they're in motion again and he settles back for the ride - however long it might take. Yeeting a ghost like that? Honestly...[break][break]

The blue eyes peering out at them through the mist as they float down the river, go unnoticed by Fern initially. It's not until Alexandra calls attention to it, that he spurs to life again. Flares of bright flame shoot above them, and he ducks on instinct, even without the command. "What was that?" A furious, spectral victini pursues them despite the setback that comes with the WAVE CRASH trying to wash it away.[break][break]

Fight fire with fire, yeah?[break][break]

Calling out his hisuian typholosion, the tera orb slips out of his pocket and into his hand before lighting the pokemon up with a crystalline sheen. It coats her fur and bolsters her further when and another blast of INFERNO comes sailing their way. The typhlosion bites back in a phantasmic burst of ethereal violet flames that churn and whoosh toward the victini in succession - a spectral, INFERNAL PARADE.

[attr="class","star2"] There’s no backtracking from the moment once it arrives. Fern very blatantly and petulantly announces his wants and he can’t pull them back onto his tongue once it’s out in the open air.[break][break]

It’s a mortifying, vulnerable feeling. Heightened by how public it all is—different from the quieter moments shared in the privacy of their homes. But it’s what he wants, isn’t it? He’s never been one to seek out stable relationships, but somehow, yes, it is.[break][break]

It’s likely why he reacted this way in the first place. Because Fern is just as new to the concept or attachment with words like longterm behind it.[break][break]

Oh.[break][break]

Did it finally, finally click?[break][break]

They’re pulled back around and at first they watch him defiantly as he fumbles over his words again. But then he draws closer and they feel themself soften. Stupidly, affectionately so. He apologizes and they believe him, because when has he ever been anything but ridiculously earnest?[break][break]

His gaze slides down to where their fingers shift and link together. He doesn’t pull away, or attempt to continue the spat. His brattiness fades, and for a moment, all Fern focuses on is the rapid beat of his own heart, loud in his ears as some of the color finally fades from his face.[break][break]

Fern sighs, quietly and finally with an air of resignation. Their smile is hopeful as they glance back up at him, but still tentative. “Yeah, you do? Really?” It’s probably the closest to sheepish they’ll come.[break][break]

“Kinda just figured you’d decided you didn’t want me around.”

“You’re…not wrong.” Though they’ve never applied that theme to, uh, catchin’ fishies.[break][break]

“Oh! Well how thoughtful of you.” Fern cracks a grin at the underboss. “First time for everything, I suppose!”[break][break]

Fern doesn’t exactly look like the fishing type, they don’t think, but hey—they’ll at least try it for the sake of the other. And who knows? Maybe they’ll decide they like it.[break][break]

What they won’t be reeling in, however, is the crawdaunt following at a curious distance.

[attr="class","star2"]Something in him seems to wake up when they say his name the way that they do. It sets Fern’s heart at an uneven canter, and they can’t help but murmur his name over and over. Muddled and punctuated by unintelligible sound. Any tether of control they might hold they are quick to let go of. A rabbit willingly caught in a snare.[break][break]

“You know, it’s a good thing my desk is toward the back, or else someone passing by might’ve had quite the show,” they tease long afterward, once they’ve come down from the high of the moment and begun to clean up the disarray.[break][break]

Rather than find their missing shirt again, Fern rubs at the darkened and pleasantly tender spot branded into their shoulder absently, and pulls a heavy-knit sweater from where they had draped it over a chair earlier.[break][break]

They don’t mind, of course. Or at least they aren’t ashamed by any stretch or means. In fact, once they’ve pulled the slightly too-big sweater over their head and smooths the static from their now messy hair, Fern pinches his chin between their fingers loosely and stretches up onto their toes to press kiss-swollen lips together once again. Languid and content, pleased like a purrloin who has just had a particularly restful nap in the sunlight.[break][break]

In fact, they find themselves wholly incapable of pulling away fully now. Clingy in their affection as their arms loop around his middle and his chin pillows against his chest as Fern peers up at him with a coy smile. “That was…awfully voracious of you.” Again, they don’t mind, though it was definitely a shift from that night before meteno.[break][break]

If anything, they find the spontaneity of it exciting. And also relieving to have let go of everything that had been pent up in all that time they’d been unable to see one another.[break][break]

Eventually, they pull back, but their fingers still twine with his and they pull him toward a back door. “Come. I’ll make tea.”

For a moment, they consider letting the moment be– it is sweet to see him wake from peaceful slumber, after all. He stirs slow and lazy, something more peaceful in his movements than Fern is accustomed to seeing in the other’s waking moments.[break][break]

So of course they have to indulge him a bit longer than they initially intend, warmth filtering through them as he folds to them with ease. Their tongue swiping into his mouth briefly, and leaning against the touch of his hand before they drift away. “Mhm. Birthday.”[break][break]

But their excitement ultimately gets the better of them and they can’t help but hold the gift out and wait with a near bounce to their posture as their fingers curl in the blanket and the flapple flutters out. It flits around the room, likely looking for their own flapple who they’ve acquainted it with. Eventually, it flutters back and settles on the edge of the bed–watching curiously.[break][break]

“I tried really hard to find an applin,” they say hastily, even as they note the width of his smile and their own begins to creep wider. “So this is a symbolic applin, okay?” They pause then, both hands reaching to find his. “Wait- you remember what Galar’s old tale about applin is, yes?”[break][break]

Even if he doesn’t, and the brightness in the violet of his eyes is purely because of delight over the flapple itself, Fern feels thrilled to have evoked that look. All on their own.[break][break]

Still, Fern chose the flapple very specifically.[break][break]

“You’re welcome. Happy birthday, Michail.” One hand raises and slides across his face, then slips through his hair. Brushing it back with care, heart still in their throat even then.

Maybe they should take it easy on them, but it’s not as if having to watch him flit around the room and dance with others didn’t sting. It did. It made emerald-tinted jealousy twist in their stomach in a way that Fern is typically unaccustomed to.[break][break]

They’re not used to feeling insecure in themself. But something about this has laid them flat. Dragged them pitifully low, somehow worsened by the fact that it doesn’t seem to register even an ounce with the other.[break][break]

A hand darts out to let fingers snag around their wrist and their heart lurches in their chest. They come to a halt, and then take a slow breath before they turn back toward the other.[break][break]

Stare baleful and hurt even as they find the raw, desperate look bright in Jayden’s expression.[break][break]

Their cheeks are blotchy with color. Both from their frustration and embarrassment in making a small scene. The color burns under their skin furiously, and they let out an exasperated noise as the question follows.[break][break]

Relenting in their anger, but not quite done being annoyed.[break][break]

“You, dummy!” they whine, shoulders slumping as they look at him pathetically as they have to spell it out for him. But they echo it quieter, less bratty and more pitiful. “You. Being with you here. Everywhere.”

Their eyes roll, their arms fold and it’s probably so ugly and so off putting that they wouldn’t blame him for not wanting to be around them. But they can’t help the reaction when everything he says is driving them to it.[break][break]

“I thought we came here as partners,”
they grumble (more than a little whiny,) deliberately looking away, “I’m not here for the invitations.” And then they think he’s on the cusp of it, that he almost has it at the immediate no that follows their question.[break][break]

But then of course Jayden corrects himself.[break][break]

An agitated noise slips loose and Fern pushes themself up off the couch. “I don’t care about contacts right now! I don’t care about my silly invitation designs! I-“[break][break]

They huff and turn, cape swishing around them. “This isn’t a business outing for me, Michail. But fine, if you so badly want me to go find someone I’ve already met and flourish, I will go find him and ask him for my first dance.”[break][break]

It’s a bluff, and given the trajectory of the conversation, they feel a bit uncertain in making it. But Fern so badly wants him to call them on it. For him to finally realize that Fern only wants to be there with him, to snag them and pull them back so that they can’t go flouncing off.

Fern, with their own tall-eared fox mask obscuring their features, is less tech savvy and is therefore relegated to lookout. Which suits them fine because their eyes work just fine, and they’ve always been quick on their feet. Enough to scurry away if the situation calls for it. Though they aren’t exactly sure why they are essential for this task– it doesn’t matter. They are an admin now and should probably grow more accustomed to different aspects that the position entails.[break][break]

Which, Fern supposes, includes helping another admin vacate a facility.[break][break]

“Doors locked!” They chime as they move around the room, testing the handles and latches. “Is there a lockdown system for the whole building we should be using?” Super-tech deadbolts or whatever?[break][break]

Their gengar, Morty, is sent out–just to have at the ready. There is a megastone charm circling one arm, but for the time being it remains inactive. “Sooo,” Fern turns back toward Felix, “what next? They gonna try to smoke us out?”
