Gunner shook his head and waved his hand. "No, no, it's really easy for Ollie to make friends." [break][break]

Ollie had tried to do the same when he and Gunner had first met, though his overly friendly and upbeat demeanor had grated on Gunner's nerves. After seeing Ollie rise to the responsibility of Head Ranger, though, Gunner had come around to respecting him. [break][break]

"I just mean—I dunno, I was surprised you two spent the whole League holiday party together. Is somethin' going on there?" the younger Graves asked, his words slurring together and his eyebrows wiggling in comical insinuation. [break][break]

Naturally, Gunner had no idea about ollie morales's rocky relationship with PENELOPE LIVY; he and his boss kept their private lives strictly separate from the workplace. And at the party, it seemed natural for two of the three organizers to stand together in the beginning. Gunner had thought nothing of it.

As the air around their group shimmered with protective powers, jack wainwright introduced himself. "I'm Gunner," the blonde agent said in response, before rattling off the names of everyone else present. "We'll do proper introductions later." [break][break]

Then he turned to face Kyurem and the Unbound Hoopa once more, but not before meeting the unnerving gaze of Chi-Yu. Those jade eyes pierced his soul, fanning the flames of ENVY. [break][break]

Not to be outdone by those standing with him, Gunner recalled his Arcanine, swapping out the dog for his Iron Valiant. "Kahadin, target the Kyurem," the man ordered. [break][break]

At once, his Paradox Pokémon charged ahead. Its blade flashed with pink energy as it attempted to strike the massive dragon with SPIRIT BREAK. [break][break]

Kyurem gave a tremendous bellow as it slammed its claws into the ground. The earth shook with incredible force and began to split. [break][break]

"We need to move!" Gunner yelled at jack wainwright. As loath as he was to leave their frozen Pokémon behind, they were sitting ducks so far from the majority of the League contingent. [break][break]

The agent released his Arcanine from a Pokéball. "Gwyn ap Nudd, get us over there!" he ordered, pointing at the distant group surrounding PENELOPE LIVY. [break][break]

The Arcanine uttered a low bark. Then, without warning, he used TELEPORT to bring Gunner, the Ranger, and the latter's Delphox to their destination. Gunner greeted kyle lopez with a nod and illeana reyes with a smile, then turned to the rest. [break][break]

"Sorry for the delay. I ran into this Ranger evacuating local Pokémon and brought him along. Safety in numbers," the blonde said, clapping a hand on the dark-haired man's shoulder. [break][break]

A brief glance at Chi-Yu steeled Gunner's resolve. He stepped up next to Penelope in a silent show of support. [break][break]

With the bombardment of snow and ice, Gunner had no choice but to direct his Hydreigon back onto the ground. [break][break]

They landed awkwardly, too far from the main group led by PENELOPE LIVY, MATIAS SILPH, and kyle lopez. Instead, Gunner found himself stumbling off Amhar's back beside a dark-haired Ranger and his Togekiss. [break][break]

"How is the evacuation going? Almost done?" the blonde agent asked jack wainwright, who he'd never met before. A Swinub scurried between Amhar's legs just before the Hydreigon took off to rejoin the fight. [break][break]

As he listened to the stranger's answer, Gunner raised his eyes to follow Amhar's flight. With a roar, he attacked Kyurem with FLASH CANNON. The attack barely went off before the Hydreigon plummeted into a snowdrift, ice encasing his body. [break][break]

"Amhar!" Gunner yelled, alarmed. [break][break]

Before Gunner could get a word in edgewise, however, Paxton kept going. The volume of his voice and the vitriol in his words increased with every second until he was shouting. [break][break]

Gunner kept his own anger in check—until Paxton accused him of leniency toward the very terrorists he'd sworn to fight, making a mockery of his pain. [break][break]

Suddenly, everything in Gunner's vision went red. His body moved of its own accord. A clenched fist swung out and connected with Paxton's face. [break][break]

"You fucking asshole!"

As soon as Gunner realized he was on the business end of a shotgun, he raised both hands, palms facing the stranger, in the universal gesture of surrender. His heartbeat spiked, every instinct telling him to fight or flee. [break][break]

A quick visual assessment of the other man revealed the grenades daisy-chained together. Gunner's mind raced, seeking the best option for de-escalation. [break][break]

Then the man accused him of being a member of Team Rocket. Confusion and consternation creased Gunner's brow. "Please calm down, sir. I'm not with Team Rocket," he said, using his most professional government voice. [break][break]

At his side, Laudine was tense all over, her red eyes trained on the stranger in the closet. [break][break]

Gunner continued to speak. "If you want, you can reach into my coat pocket on the left side. My ID is in there. It will say I'm a member of the HBIC. I'm here to investigate a missing persons report." [break][break]

He dared not glance over his shoulder at the body, not with a shotgun in his face.

Once again, Gunner found himself inside a simulation of the RKS machine. Not only that, but it was one he'd witnessed before: the Ruins of Alph in Johto and a darkness pulling on him. [break][break]

He turned to his partner for this run. Yuina Higashi was a familiar face; he recalled her from an extraction job in the Ultra Deep Sea. At least these circumstances of their second meeting were safer than the first. [break][break]

"Have you done one of these before?" Gunner asked. "The last time I went through this scenario, my partner and I resisted the pull of darkness." [break][break]

Like before, the shadows felt ominous. Hostile. Yet they were in a virtual world. Surely no real harm would come to them. [break][break]

"We could try going in this time," the agent suggested. [break][break]

The sound is simultaneously terrifying and alluring. Ahead, a tunnel that reaches deeper inside the ruin structure you're all in is clothed in darkness. All of you feel drawn to it.[break][break]

When GIDEON GRAVES suggested that he and Gunner celebrate New Year's Eve together, the younger Graves could not refuse. He hadn't spent time with his brother in what felt like months, even though they kept in regular contact. [break][break]

Instead of going out to a bar, Gunner invited Gideon to his apartment. They had a modest dinner of prime rib and roasted vegetables, as well as plenty of alcohol. [break][break]

After four hours, they were both drunk. Playing cards lay scattered between them on Gunner's dining table, their half-finished game forgotten. [break][break]

"Wait, wait, I gotta know something," the younger brother said, interrupting the elder's long ramble about Vivillon patterns. "I've been talking with ollie morales and he says you two're hanging out a lot more." [break][break]

Not only that, but he'd spotted Gideon with Ollie at the holiday party at Mossdeep Space Center. They had seemed especially friendly. [break][break]

"Since when do you know each other?" Gunner asked, before taking a sip from his vodka tonic.
