Despite the tension between them, paxton concordas's voice over the League's comms brought a sense of calm to Gunner as he joined the battle. Paxton was dependable, excellent at his job, and a survivor. If Gunner could count on anyone to have his back in the fight against Kyurem, it was Paxton. [break][break]

"Lancer here," Gunner spoke into the comms. Riding on the back of his Hydreigon, he flew over the heads of MATIAS SILPH, paxton concordas, kyle lopez, illeana reyes, and Elise Calcifet. "I'll help cut a path to the objective." [break][break]

Amhar opened his mouth and unleashed a furious roar as a FLAMETHROWER blasted the Kyurem. Then both Pokémon and rider peeled away, attempting to evade the ice and snow of the titan's defense. [break][break]

The local police typically handled missing persons reports, but once Team Rocket's involvement became clear, the Hoenn Bureau of Intelligence and Counterterrorism took over the investigation. [break][break]

Gunner had been working tirelessly with the Fortree City Police Department over the past several days. Based on new clues and evidence, he headed into the forest of Route 119. A dirt trail took him off the main road to the small power transfer station, with its peeling paint and flimsy fencing. [break][break]

Killing the engine of his rental car and stepping out, Gunner released two Pokémon: his Arcanine, Gwyn ap Nudd, and his Umbreon, Laudine. [break][break]

"Keep watch here," the agent told the former, who huffed in affirmation and started to patrol the perimeter. A Pidove near the door tweeted as the Arcanine passed it. [break][break]

Gunner ignored the bird and entered the building. And then he paused, because the lights were already on inside. [break][break]

Exchanging a glance with Laudine, he gave the Pokémon a silent command through hand signals. The Umbreon slunk around the room, examining it for anything amiss, as Gunner rounded a folding table to find the body on the floor. [break][break]

Laudine stopped in front of a closet. Though the smell of death was overpowering, she caught a whiff of something else, something recent, through the door. Her sudden stillness alerted Gunner, and he crept over. Then, grabbing the handle with one hand, he threw the door open.

Gunner descended upon Remiel Calcifet's front yard riding the back of his Hydreigon. Amhar's legs and tail sank into the snow piled to the side of the walkway, but his trainer remained clear of it. Gunner hopped off his Pokémon's back, landing on his feet on the shoveled path. [break][break]

"Having some trouble, Calcifet?" he asked, eyebrow raised at the state of the front yard. [break][break]

Despite Remiel's reputation—both current and prior—the agent had never met him. Part of him was grateful for that. PENELOPE LIVY would have chewed him out if he'd punched someone with such a high-profile status, even if it was justified. [break][break]

Yet there Gunner was, at the defector's doorstep. The assignment had come unexpectedly, and though he had argued it at first, he understood the importance of having a senior agent on the case. [break][break]

After all, Remiel had been a Rocket admin. [break][break]

Gunner surveyed the yard, squinting in the brightness of newly fallen snow. "I heard the power went out in several neighborhoods here. Are you affected, too?" he asked Remiel.

A matching smile spread across Gunner's face when the Pokémon awakened from their stone slumber. He watched them wander around the Tree of Life, feeling a pang of disappointment as they melted away with their surroundings. [break][break]

When he looked up, two dragons battled in the skies as two brothers argued. "Truth or ideals," he mused aloud, rubbing his chin. [break][break]

When Eva spoke, Gunner turned to look at her. A part of him hesitated; after all, part of his job involved obfuscating the truth or hiding it behind masks of falsehoods. All done for the greater good, of course. [break][break]

But instead of voicing this out loud, he nodded. "I agree." [break][break]

Gunner arrives at PRIMARINA DESIGNS without delay, his Luxray at his heels. He greets mila alexopoulos with a bouquet of red roses and a small gift bag. Inside the bag is a custom Pokéball, its colors matching the streak of purple in her hair and the reddish-pink hue of her eyes.

The Pokémon contained within is a Skitty, a white silk ribbon tied into a cute bow around her neck.

"Should we go get dinner?" Gunner offers Mila, before a crooked smile spreads over his face. He draws her close and brushes his lips against her ear. "Or do you want dessert first?"

A tender comfort followed Gunner's unraveling as Mila held onto him, her small hands cupping his cheeks. He gazed into her eyes with half-lidded ones of his own, allowing them to swallow him whole. Yet somehow, through the fog of post-coital bliss, he was able to latch onto her words and the fragility that laced them. [break][break]

"I'm sorry I left you all alone. That I wasn't there for you," he murmured, before pressing a soft kiss against her lips. [break][break]

When Gunner pulled away, he withdrew completely, extracting himself from Mila and lowering her legs so she could stand on her own. He swiped a few paper napkins from the nearby table and handed some to her so she could clean herself up. He did the same before tucking himself back into his pants and buckling up his belt. [break][break]

Afterward, he reached for her again and caressed her cheek with a gentle hand. "It was an assignment by the Bureau. I went to Kalos to avert a crisis," he explained. [break][break]

Determination to do his duty and regret for leaving Mila behind warred openly on Gunner's face. Eventually, his shoulders sagged with the weight of his burdens. Folding an arm around her shoulders, he drew her into his side and kissed the top of her head. [break][break]

"It seems no matter how hard I try to protect everyone, I just end up hurting the people who matter the most to me."

Mila's moans and gasps, muffled in an attempt to hide their act, were so sweet to Gunner's ear. He loved knowing she was falling apart in his embrace, every ounce of her self-control worn away by the way he pleasured her. It drove him on, urging him to pick up speed. [break][break]

But the table was too unsteady, scooting back with every violent thrust. Frustrated, Gunner picked up Mila again without separating from her, forcing her to wrap her legs around his hips. He took a few careful steps toward the wall until he could brace her against it and resume his furious pace. [break][break]

"I thought about you when I was away. Every day." [break][break]

For reasons Gunner could not explain, Mila's vulnerable admission sent him over the edge. Ecstasy and bliss flooded him. Stars burst in his vision. He held onto her tightly, unwilling to let go. [break][break]

Mila's warm hand wrapping around him ripped a soft moan from Gunner's lips. He sagged against her body, his head dipping to rest his forehead against her slender shoulder. "Fuck," he murmured before planting a tender kiss against her neck. [break][break]

But he did not stay that way for long. With a speed and efficiency born not only from desperate need, but also from past experience, he pulled aside her panties while shoving down his pants just enough to free himself. [break][break]

And then, before the chilly winter air could kill the mood, Gunner eased himself inside Mila. Instant contentment and pleasure flooded his body. Once more, everything was right in the world. As Zata ranted, growing more agitated by the second, Gunner listened in silence. He recognized the anger and frustration in the younger man, having felt similarly about a different war and a different dead loved one. [break][break]

The comment about isolation gave Gunner pause, however. In his eyes, it came from nowhere, an incongruous statement inserted at random into the emotional venting. [break][break]

"I hope you find the answers to your questions," he simply said, knowing that nothing he could say or do could bring Zata comfort. "I'll text you if I find anything on my end." [break][break]

Stuffing his hands in his coat's pockets, Gunner turned back to the memorial, intent on lingering for a few more minutes before heading home.

Gunner entered the names into his phone. Afterward, he exchanged numbers with Zata. Despite being a Hoenn native, the younger man seemed lost, like he lacked a knowledge of the wider world. [break][break]

Though Gunner knew he couldn't help every aimless soul in Hoenn, he felt better knowing that Zata could reach out if he was ever in a pinch. [break][break]

"Apparently, resources. They come from another world that is dying, or something, and they need energy to restore it," the blonde explained when asked about the Megalopolans. "There are a ton of news reports about the Ultra Beast War, if you're interested in looking into it." [break][break]

He tilted his head at Zata, putting together pieces of the puzzle. [break][break]

Every inch of Gunner's body burned as their lips met in a passionate, needy kiss. He drank up every furious emotion Mila poured into him, his desire for her spiking when she bit down hard enough to draw blood.[break][break]

Uttering a deep, throaty rumble, he reciprocated in kind, fighting her for dominance even as he slaked his thirst for her.[break][break]

But kissing wasn't enough. Gunner reached down, sliding his hands beneath the hem of Mila's skirt to slide rough palms against smooth, sensitive skin. Her softness was enough to drive him into a frenzy, and before long, he had walked her backward until she bumped against the table.[break][break]

Without a second thought, Gunner lifted Mila up and set her down on the table. Her legs hugged around his hips, and he pressed himself against her. Champagne glasses clinked together dangerously with the sudden disturbance.[break][break]

"And you're mine," he murmured, his voice low and fierce. A hand fisted her hair at the back of her head. Tugging hard, he exposed her neck to a barrage of bloody, bruising kisses.

The daring look in Mila's eyes only inflamed Gunner further. He couldn't deny that PENELOPE LIVY looked gorgeous in her red dress, but the sight of Mila in hers had been what stunned him from all the way across the room. [break][break]

And now that she was right up in his face, glowering at him with a fury to match his, he only wanted her more. A traitorous thrill ran through him when she yanked his tie to pull him down toward her. [break][break]

His hands grabbed her sides, though he wasn't sure if he was holding her at bay or keeping her close. [break][break]

"I don't care about anyone else at this stupid fucking party except you," Gunner said, his voice low and rough with a storm of emotions. [break][break]

Everything about Mila overwhelmed him in that moment: the heat radiating off her body, her perfume, her face flushed so prettily with her anger. His hands slid down her curves, rough against the fabric of her dress, to squeeze her supple flesh in a possessive grip. [break][break]

Their faces were so close now that he could kiss her if he wanted. And oh, how he wanted. His gaze slid to her glossy lips, drawn to them like they were the sweetest honey.
