Gunner matched Wolfgang's brisk pace as he followed the other man through unfamiliar corridors. He barely had time to look around after stepping inside Wolfgang's apartment and closing the door behind him. The brunette's mouth was on his again.[break][break]

Kissing him back with equal fervor, Gunner ran his hands over Wolfgang's bare chest, sides and back, relishing the feel of hard muscle. Reaching up with one hand, he curled his fingers into Wolfgang's hair at the back of his head, deepening the angle of the kiss and adding teeth.[break][break]

Suddenly, Gunner's own clothes felt too hot and restricting. Breaking away briefly, he seized his shirt by the hem and pulled it off in one swift movement.[break][break]

"Bedroom?" he asked, his voice low and rough with want. His hands moved to the front of Wolfgang's trousers, fumbling with the button and zipper.

Relief flooded Gunner when Penelope finally recognized him, the light returning to her eyes as she met his gaze. Still, he held onto her shoulders, afraid that if he let go, he would lose her to her inner turmoil again.[break][break]

But then came the screams from the floor below. His head snapped around to see the shelves of magma that had built up in the office surroundings them. How he had managed to avoid getting burned, he didn't know.[break][break]

Balin's yelps finally drew Gunner away from Penelope. The Inteleon waved his arms frantically in between bursts of water to douse the fires around them. He and Merlin stood surrounded by bubbling lava.[break][break]

"We have to go," Gunner decided, his voice firm. He looked back at his boss. "Can you reverse this?" he asked her.

Gunner wondered if Wolfgang realized how eager he sounded by inviting him to stay the entire night. The blonde said nothing, however, as they entered the narrow, cramped elevator.[break][break]

As soon as Wolfgang pressed the button for his floor and the doors closed, Gunner stepped toward him, hands reaching for his waist and neck. If the other man allowed, he would press him against the wall of the elevator with his body and capture his lips in a heated, needy kiss.[break][break]

If Gunner had his way—if the elevator ride were infinite—he would start undressing Wolfgang right then and there. But he knew they only had mere moments, just enough time to share a taste of what was to come.

Standing there in the woods, Gunner and Mila danced painstakingly around the words that would seal their fate to each other. He felt it in his bones that if either one voiced those words out loud, everything would change. But he did not know if their lives would change for the better or for the worse.[break][break]

That fear gripped him, sending his heart racing with anxiety. He let Mila pull him down to her again. He smothered that fear with another kiss, pressing his lips against hers in silent prayer.[break][break]

Don't let me ruin this.[break][break]

"You drive me crazy," he said, letting out a soft chuckle. "But I don't want it any other way. I wouldn't be—"[break][break]

If there was one certainty about Mila in his life, it's that her absence had torn a rift right through him. Even though years without her had spared him the heartache of being around her, they had also robbed him of moments like this.[break][break]

Gunner and Navy did not know each other well, just in the capacity of their professions. So when Navy continued to compliment him, Gunner did not know how to react. He merely smiled back, accepting the kindness, unsure how to handle it.[break][break]

Thankfully, Voyager's barks interrupted the awkward moment. Bruin rushed after the Arcanine, Caelia beside him. Eventually, they reached an area full of glowing purple crystals, bubbles of poison oozing from the ground around them.[break][break]

The Sneasel—so many of them—attacked, leaving the kidnapped girl unguarded.[break][break]

"Caelia, grab her!" Gunner ordered.[break][break]

His Blaziken charged into the fray to gather up the child in her arms. Meanwhile, Bruin the Salamence roared, aiding Voyager by breathing a FLAMETHROWER on the nearest trio of Sneasel.[break][break]

Caelia was at Bruin's side in a flash, easing the dazed and frightened girl into Gunner's lap. "We got her, Navidson!" he shouted over the din of combat.

Gunner melted at the contact, at the heat of Mila's body pressed against his, at the tangle of her fingers in his hair. His arms wrapped around her torso, holding her close. His tongue slipped against her lips to taste the sticky sweetness of the ringo-ame lingering there.[break][break]

"I missed you too," he murmured against her cheek as he nuzzled the soft skin there.[break][break]

Words gathered in his throat, urging him to speak them into reality—words he had turned over in his head more than once, while lying next to her at night when she was sleeping.[break][break]

"I didn't realize how much you meant to me until I thought I'd lost you forever," Gunner said instead, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment. Never before had he been so grateful for the veiling shadows of darkness.[break][break]

Wolfgang's abrupt lack of chattiness signaled to Gunner that his forwardness had paid off that time. Pleased with himself, he drank more beer, ready to suggest they leave once that first round was over.[break][break]

But Wolfgang's question suggested he was ready now. Gunner's heartbeat quickened with excitement, and he shot the other man a yearning, hungry look.[break][break]

"Finish your drink and we'll go. I'm not wasting a good beer," he said with a laugh, before downing the rest of his glass.[break][break]

After they finished and paid, Gunner was more than happy to leave the bar. He stepped out onto the sidewalk and looked over at Wolfgang. "Your place or mine? I live in Slateport."[break][break]

Alternatively, they could get a cheap motel, but when you had Pokémon that could teleport, why spend fifty PD when you could have a romp in the comfort of your own home?

Wolfgang's attempt to impress succeeded; Gunner's eyebrows rose into his forehead as he regarded the other man. "Wow, Silph Co. So you caught the eye of the infamous Fernando Silph," he mused aloud. "You must be working on some cutting-edge technology, then."[break][break]

The sentiment was sincere, not mocking. Wolfgang had come a long way from being a criminal and terrorist. Gunner smiled, pleased that reintegration into society had gone so well for the other man.[break][break]

His smile turned into a grin, then a laugh as Wolfgang egged him on. Gunner leaned in close.[break][break]

"If that's what gets you off, it can be arranged. I'll brag all you want about—" and then he leaned in even closer to whisper lewd suggestions into Wolfgang's ear.[break][break]

Gunner withdrew, a shit-eating grin splitting his face. He took a big swig of beer before returning to a more polite topic.[break][break]

"Yeah, I'm still involved in the rehabilitation program. Not that I work with people one-on-one, but I help conduct the initial interviews and do check-ins once in a while. You're familiar with that."[break][break]

Their visits had been regular, scheduled. After a solid year without any infractions or suspicious activity, the HBIC declared Wolfgang graduated from his parole. He could live freely without having to report his activities or whereabouts to them. And as a result, Gunner had stopped dropping by his home.

"Great. We'll be in touch." He stood, his crime novel tucked under his arm. In the near distance, other plainclothes agents stirred, ready to disperse.[break][break]

But Gunner paused for a moment, even as he began to turn away.[break][break]

"And Summer? Do be careful, please."[break][break]

He looked directly at her, hoping to catch her gaze with his. Though subtle, the lines of his face conveyed the concern only one friend could have for another.

Wolfgang's shove under the counter refocused Gunner's attention on the conversation. There was no need for such forwardness; after all, both knew what the real point of their meetup was supposed to be. There would be plenty of time for touching after a drink and a chat.[break][break]

"Aeos? Never heard of it," Gunner admitted, taking a sip of his beer. Which meant it wasn't directly overseen or funded by the League government. Perhaps it was part of a private entity? "What sort of stuff are you doing with them? More engineering?"[break][break]

It was what Wolfgang had done during his tenure in Team Rocket.[break][break]

The other man's comment about his record prompted Gunner to chuckle. "No it won't. Trust me, this is all off-the-books and I won't say a peep about it to anyone. I don't kiss and tell."[break][break]

Perhaps that would ease Wolfgang's nerves. Then again, he always had an air of hostility around him. Gunner couldn't help imagining how fun it would be to sample some of that aggression in the bedroom.

The Magikarp fishing game was a small pool filled with adolescent fish, small enough to fit in nets even children could wield. Gunner crouched by the side of the pool with net in hand.[break][break]

Mere moments later, he stood, beaming with pride as a fish flopped in the webbing.[break][break]

"Easy," he said after a carnie confirmed the win and handed him the Skitty plush. "Your turn, Freya."

"So there's a good chance the little girl will be alive," Gunner mused aloud as they approached the wormhole Navy's Arcanine had pinpointed.[break][break]

The rift loomed large and ominous in front of them. When Navy hopped onto Voyager's back, Gunner opened a second Pokéball to summon something he could ride, too.[break][break]

The Salamence that emerged was a veteran of the Battle of Dewford Town. One look told Bruin all he needed to know about where he was and what he was doing there.[break][break]

"Thanks," Gunner said to Navy, taken aback a little by the sudden compliments. Unfortunately, he did not remember their time in Galar as well as the other man did. "Between the two of us, we'll find her."[break][break]

He hopped onto Bruin's back. The Salamence took it as his cue to lumber forward, following Navy and Voyager through the wormhole. Caelia kept pace on foot.[break][break]

The pair and their Pokémon emerged into the eerie blue "waters" of the Ultra Deep Sea.

From the blackened carpet, bubbles of magma began to seep and ooze upward and outward. Gunner gasped as a bubble rose into the air and popped, spraying the nearby desk with molten droplets.[break][break]

Tongues of fire grew from them, eating at the dark wood.[break][break]

"Miss Livy!" Gunner shouted again. He released two Pokémon, his Inteleon and Alakazam—the former to contain the fire, the latter to teleport them all out of the office, just in case.[break][break]

Steeling himself, Gunner stepped into the barrier of heat surrounding Penelope. Immediately, his body broke out into a sweat; it pooled under his collar and on his back. Beads of it dripped down his face.[break][break]

While Balin the Inteleon quickly doused flames with LIQUIDATION, Gunner stepped as close to his boss as he dared. He grabbed her shoulders with both hands, his grip firm, fierce.[break][break]

"I'm here," he said, hoping to sound reassuring instead of panicked. "It's okay. You can do this, Miss Livy. I believe in you. You are in control."[break][break]

Near his head, another bubble of magma popped. He stifled the urge to flinch.

Wolfgang's question is a legitimate concern. A government agent like Gunner should adhere to strict professionalism, keeping him from fraternizing with charges in his care.[break][break]

The fact of the matter was, he wasn't very good at being strictly professional when it came to more carnal wants. mila alexopoulos came to mind as the most frequent example of his offense.[break][break]

Gunner shrugged. "I don't think it matters anymore, right? Since you're not really under my supervision anymore. And even if you were, well…"[break][break]

He glanced sidelong at Wolfgang, admiring the other man's physique through his clothes, and cleared his throat.[break][break]

"Can you blame me?" Gunner grinned.[break][break]

The bar was crowded, full of people who'd been watching the Booty Bump contest. The only available seats were at the bar, forcing the two men to squeeze in together.[break][break]

Under the counter, Gunner's knee pressed against Wolfgang's. The heat of the contact was distracting. The blonde wondered why he'd bothered suggesting a bar at all.[break][break]

"How've you been, anyway?" he asked after ordering a beer. "I haven't read your name in any reports so I'm guessing you're staying out of mischief."

Despite Wolfgang's aggressive tone and words, Gunner could not help but grin as the man approached. It seemed Wolfgang hadn't changed, at least not since Gunner had last seen him.[break][break]

"Oh, you know. I was coerced, gunpoint, something like that," he said nonchalantly, shrugging. For someone who was known at his workplace for being too serious, the joke had come naturally. Easily.[break][break]

The reality was, of course, that his friends had convinced him to sign up for the contest. And what kind of man would he have been if he'd backed down?[break][break]

It was happy hour, and the Contest Hall's neighborhood was packed with tourist attractions — restaurants, bars, shopping.
