The Booty Bump Beatdown contest had been downright humiliating, but it had also, in a weird way, been really fun. Even though Gunner lost in the very first round against Navy, he stayed to watch the rest of the contest play out until the victor was crowned with the title of "greatest ass in Hoenn."[break][break]

In between the semifinals and the final round, Gunner checked his phone. An AmiGo notification caught his attention, especially when he saw who'd swiped right on his profile.[break][break]

It was none other than wolfgang volkov, a former member of Team Rocket he'd kept tabs on during the first couple years of his defection. Wolfgang's good behavior meant, after a while, that he no longer needed regular check-ins, and Gunner hadn't heard from him since.[break][break]

After a few back-and-forth DMs, he learned Wolfgang had been in the audience watching Gunner's loss to Navy. The two men agreed to meet, which is how Gunner found himself outside the Contest Hall's front doors, hands in his pockets, waiting for Wolfgang to emerge from the building.[break][break]

He couldn't tell what the bubble of excitement in his chest meant.[break][break]

Finally, he saw the brunette among the crowd and raised a hand to grab his attention. "Hey, Volkov!" he shouted. "Over here!"

Gunner paid for three rings and stood before the Dugtrio-shaped targets, gauging the distance. He let the rings fly one by one, but they, too, fell to the ground without catching.[break][break]

He sighed, hands on hips. "You're definitely right. Rigged."[break][break]

Turning away, he looked for something else to do — a game or attraction that would entertain them both.[break][break]

"New council position aside, how have you been lately?" Gunner asked.[break][break]

He and Freya had not seen each other since the wildfire they'd both been called to quell. In fact, this was their first time meeting under more casual circumstances.[break][break]

And with the trajectory of her career, he imagined more of these meetings would be few and far between.

Angelo's slap on the back had the strength of a proper push, sending Gunner stumbling down the steep slope of the crater. With a shout, he slid part of the way until he lost his balance and tumbled the rest of the way to the floor. He landed unceremoniously on his side with a grunt of pain.[break][break]

His Kartana floated down with ease, chirping softly to inquire if he was all right.[break][break]

"I'm okay," Gunner reassured his Pokémon before shouting, "Asshole!" at Angelo.[break][break]

Slowly, he picked himself up, keeping an eye on the swarm of paper-white Ultra Beasts flying in a cloud overhead. None of them had broken away to follow him down the crater's slope.[break][break]

In the distance, the unfamiliar figures stirred.

From what Gunner knew, Sneasel was not one of the Pokémon with a habit of kidnapping children. His expression darkened as he pondered just what need the inhabitants of the Ultra Deep Sea might have for human victims.[break][break]

As far as he was concerned, these reanimated Pokémon were merely puppets. Tools used by the Ultra Beasts — or, perhaps, something more dangerous than even them.[break][break]

Breath condensed into mist inside Granite Cave. Gunner swept the rocky chambers with an apprehensive gaze. At once, he saw the wormholes. They gaped like mouths, the vortex of space within their boundaries swirling with malevolence.[break][break]

"Hopefully they haven't gone far," the agent said, his voice grim. He released his Blaziken from a Pokéball. In a fight, she'd have the advantage over a Sneasel, provided its typing had not changed.[break][break]

"Caelia, we need to find a little girl who's been kidnapped. Go with Voyager." He gestured to the Arcanine. "Stop anything that might be hurting her."[break][break]

The Blaziken made a noise of affirmation and trotted ahead, seeking her target.

Whatever it was that fueled Navy that day had to be tremendous to give him the ass strength needed to dethrone Gunner. Another flash of panic ran through the blonde as he felt the impact of Navy's backside against his own.[break][break]

Gunner careened forward, losing his footing. The rippling, blue surface of the pool rushed up to meet him. He took a deep breath.[break][break]

Splash![break][break]

The thunder of riotous cheering barely pierced the water that surrounded him on all sides. Pushing down feelings of frustration, he righted himself and swam upwards. The crowd's screams came to full volume and clarity as his head broke the surface.[break][break]

"Nice work, Navidson," Gunner said to the man still standing on the platform. "It's official: you have the better ass. I wouldn't mind bumping it again."[break][break]

He flashed Navy a cheeky grin and a suggestive wink before swimming to the edge of the pool.

Navy's tremendous opener rocked Gunner hard. Panic seared through him as he stumbled closer to the edge of the floating disk. Windmilling his arms and scrambling his bare feet against the water-slicked platform, he managed to stay on, but barely.[break][break]

Beside him, Balin fared better. The Inteleon whipped back with U-TURN, slamming his behind into the opposing Greninja's.[break][break]

Not to be outdone by Dewford's Gym Leader, Gunner inhaled deeply and shoved backward with all his might.[break][break]

Beads of sweat rolled down Gunner's face as the panic started to swell inside him. He clamped down on the feeling, determined not to break in front of Lam. "I'm okay. Let's finish this as quickly as possible, though."[break][break]

At that moment, however, Lamorak's WIDE GUARD crumbled. An unnatural creature emerged from the shadows of the cavern, some grotesque mix of a Mismagius and a Dusknoir.[break][break]

"Lamorak!" Gunner shouted. The Stonjourner rumbled, clenching his massive fists. ROCK SLIDE rained down upon the abomination, just as Lam's Psyduck attacked with CONFUSION.[break][break]

After a quick battle, the strange Pokémon cried out and vanished, dissipating as motes of energy.[break][break]

The smile on his face grew grateful at the proffered cotton candy. Reaching out, he plucked a wispy chunk from the cone. The sugary tendrils dissolved as soon as they touched his tongue. He ate them anyway with gusto.[break][break]

"Thanks. And no, I don't mind at all. I was actually thinking of playing this game," Gunner said, gesturing to the Dugtrio Ring Toss. "Want to do it with me? I'm going to try and win that for… a friend."[break][break]

Gunner accepted the card. All it took was one glance at the familiar logo printed on its side for the revelation to hit him. His gaze snapped back up to meet Sheba's, eyes wide.[break][break]

He was a man who did not shop in such stores, but he also frequently spent time with a woman who did. "Wait, seriously? You're the CEO of INU?" he asked, flabbergasted.[break][break]

Sheba was, in fact, on the same level as a woman like Summer, yet she indulged in mundane hobbies like book club. No wonder she hadn't shown up for some time. Gunner couldn't imagine what sort of daily responsibilities she had to deal with.[break][break]

He chuckled again. "And here you had me thinking you were a small indie business or something."

Gunner was first on the large, floating disk in the middle of the pool, his Inteleon beside him. Perhaps Balin was not the best partner, for Inteleon were lean creatures, but the sight of Navy's equally skinny Greninja was significant reassurance.[break][break]

As expected, only the finest of asses would determine the winner of this year's Booty Bump Beatdown. And Gunner was certain it would be him.[break][break]

He laughed at Navy's entrance, though the sudden weight of the other man caused the float to rock violently. Gunner adjusted, keeping his balance.[break][break]

"Don't get ahead of yourself, Navidson," he said, smirking. "I'm going to dunk you so hard your ass will be hurting all the way till next Tuesday."[break][break]

Not a man for theatrics, Gunner turned to face the crowd. He scanned the audience for mila alexopoulos, wondering if she'd decided to show up, but refocused quickly.[break][break]

No distractions. He had an opponent to dunk.[break][break]

Adopting a wide, stable stance, he squatted and pushed back slightly to touch Navy's butt with his own.[break][break]

But it was. Even from this distance, he could feel the boiling heat rolling off his boss in persistent waves. The carpet beneath her feet began to blacken.[break][break]

"Miss Livy!" Gunner cried out, alarmed. He rushed toward her but faltered as he got closer. The heat became oppressive; he felt all at once like an unwanted intruder.[break][break]

He tried to catch her gaze, his expression concern mixed with apprehension. "Miss Livy, are you okay? The floor—"

As much as Gunner enjoyed going to festivals, work consumed him, especially with the upcoming AQUA meeting and increased security it required. His superiors finally demanded that he take the day off, so he figured he'd check out the carnival at Littleroot Town to see how much the sleepy countryside had bounced back from last November's chaos.[break][break]

The sinkhole still loomed large in its landscape. Gunner stopped by there first before making his way to the festival proper. Its abyssal darkness stared up at him like an ominous maw, taunting him.[break][break]

In contrast, the flashing lights, bright colors, and cacophonous sounds of the Magnificent Funtasia were a crescendo of life and laughter. Children scampered in zigzags as Gunner navigated between the booths and games.[break][break]

A familiar voice called his attention away from the Dugtrio Ring Toss game he'd been contemplating. When he turned to look, Freya emerged from the anonymous crowd, her hand raised in greeting.[break][break]

"Freya! Hey," Gunner said, his lips curling into a warm smile. "Or should I say Councilwoman Morningstar? How are you?"
