Gunner stared again, still groping for a handle on the conversation. Well, it seemed less a conversation and more of an interview at this point. But he supposed he could not blame Knox. After all, Gunner was fully aware of how protective younger brothers could be.[break][break]

To buy himself some time while his brain scrambled for an answer, Gunner sipped his latte, enjoying the note of vanilla amidst the strong coffee flavor. Then he said:[break][break]

"Well, I was born in Fallarbor and grew up there. I'm a younger brother, like you." Perhaps that comment would establish some commonality. "Uh, I have a law degree but I never took the bar exam. Right now I work as a paralegal."[break][break]

Gunner pursed his lips, searching for some trivia that didn't make him seem too boring.[break][break]

Gunner was in the process of lowering himself into the seat opposite from Knox when the other man voiced the question he least expected to hear.[break][break]

"What kinda asshole are ya?"[break][break]

Gunner stared at Knox for a long moment, long enough for one of the baristas to finish making the latte and bring it to their table. Only after she'd left did Gunner finally speak, his brow finally knitting together in confusion and skepticism — as if he'd heard wrong.[break][break]

"Sorry?" It was the only thing to say. What other response was there?

Gunner clasped his hands together in a bid to stop them from trembling. It should have come as no surprise that Eva didn't know the details of those lost in Team Rocket's attacks. He should have not come and wasted her time.[break][break]

However, when he opened his mouth to thank her and excuse himself, different words came out.[break][break]

"I had a girlfriend back in Kanto. We didn't meet through work or anything — she just happened to work at the café where I often ate lunch — and we only dated for a few months, but I really enjoyed our time together."[break][break]

He paused, unsure if he should stop here or keep going. He hadn't talked this much about Sayori since her death so many years ago, and never with a stranger. Yet something about Eva made Gunner open up in a way he hadn't before.[break][break]

"I loved her. I thought she was… the one. She died in a train station bombing as she was trying to evacuate the region. And I thought to myself…" He took a deep, tremulous breath. "The least I can do is go back to Kanto and visit her grave. If it even exists. But with the political situation, I don't think I'd be able to do that unless I return to a free Kanto."[break][break]

"Do you think that's possible based on what you witnessed, Dr. Morales? A free Kanto?"

Gunner walked through the doors of the café, eyes alert and scanning the patrons for the man he knew as knox prescott. Except he didn't know Knox — not yet. Which was the purpose of their meeting: so that Gunner could formally introduce himself, as Summer Atreides's latest boyfriend, to her younger brother.[break][break]

He spied the pale-haired man reading a comic book, though by the way their eyes locked almost immediately, Knox hadn't really been reading. But instead of making a beeline for him, Gunner bought a latte first. Only afterward did he approach the other man.[break][break]

"Knox? I'm Gunner," the blonde said, smiling politely and extending a hand to offer a shake. "Thanks for agreeing to meet here."

"We could always use more training," the agent conceded with a tilt of his head. "But I'm not sure that's all it is."[break][break]

Using the tablet, he flipped through profile after profile of all the League operatives who'd assisted in Dewford Town and Granite Cave. Many official personnel were battle-hardened veterans, having cut their teeth on previous missions against Team Rocket.[break][break]

So what was the problem?[break][break]

"Our coordination and communications were all solid. Our healing teams did an amazing job putting us back on the frontline in no time. We tore through our supply of artifacts obtained from the Wilds. I guess we need to be asking ourselves: what does Team Rocket have that we don't?"

After a long and chaotic day of fighting in Dewford Town, Granite Cave, and Ultra Deep Sea, Gunner had finally located his brother at Dewford Hospital. Though he'd tried to say encouraging and reassuring things to Gideon, a haggardness hung around the elder Graves that Gunner had found difficult to penetrate.[break][break]

But it was expected. Gideon had just undergone a traumatic experience, with injuries as proof.[break][break]

Injuries that stirred the festering hate in Gunner's heart every time he looked at them.[break][break]

Back in Slateport City, after helping Gideon into his apartment and making sure he was comfortable, Gunner made ready to leave. But then Gideon spoke in a tone he hadn't used in a long time around the younger Graves.[break][break]

Gunner tensed as Chu-e's fury took hold and he tore through his cabinets and threw everything out. The agent noticed the dark crystals as they rippled across Chu-e's body. His hand instinctively moved to the Pokéballs at his belt, ready to defend himself if the other went feral.[break][break]

Instead, Chu-e sniffled, and Gunner realized what the other man was saying. Naturally, a father would be worried about his daughter. But up until that moment, Gunner had still struggled to see Chu-e as a human being instead of just a former terrorist.[break][break]

And as someone who'd once wanted to be a father, Gunner found himself sympathizing with Chu-e's fear.[break][break]

He reached out and put a hand on the other's shoulder. "Don't worry, she's still alive. Now let's go buy you some new groceries."

Gunner ripped off the filthy, sweaty mask that covered his face. His hair clung to his forehead and his body groaned with the ache of a dozen bruises. Standing amid the bustle of an aid station at Dewford Town, he stared incredulously at the radio operator who'd relayed the message.[break][break]

Team Rocket had secured the Seal Stone.[break][break]

"That's impossible!" he shouted, rage building. "What happened?! How could we let them take it?!"[break][break]

But the only answer was the shake of the operator's head. Gunner threw his mask at his feet, swearing loudly. Then he sat down hard on a nearby chair, head in his hands. A dozen scenarios played through his head of the battles he'd just survived. If he could have done anything differently, anything at all, could that have changed the tide?[break][break]

And then, as he replayed the brawl with the masked Rocket who'd been beating up GIDEON GRAVES, Gunner remembered his reason for approaching the radio operator in the first place.[break][break]

Looking up, he asked, "Nevermind, forget about that. We'll deal with it. Can you send a message to everyone? I'm looking for someone. I think he's still out there."
