[attr="class","oz"]Next time, he’d just send a golden ticket or something. This whole in-person meeting thing was a ton of trouble. Especially when he considered this lady might not even be here. Head Rangers were pretty important, after all. Then, of course, he wasn’t allowed to take his EV up the mountain roads. Back at the sign, that didn’t seem like a big deal.

But now? He wished he’d rented a Corviknight. Heck, he’d have chanced a ride on Kazooie. This place was steaming. It was like a sauna without the health benefits. A feeling that the Alolan man was surprised he minded. The fact that he was dressed in what he thought would fit in—which included pants—definitely didn’t help. He was pretty sure he was chafed too.

Blue jeans sucked.

Oz mopped sweat from his brow for what felt like the hundredth time. This time, he didn’t even bother putting the monogrammed handkerchief. It seemed like a lot of wasted effort. He’d just be pulling it out later. With an almost petty level of jealousy, the dark-haired man’s eyes slid to his Gholdengo. Though touching him burnt to the touch, the steel-type didn’t seem bothered by the heat.

Finally, Oz crested the path. In front of him, Lavaridge laid out in all its tourist trappings. As he moved his eyes toward the distant Ranger HQ, he shook his head. “Daddy needs a drink." He’d waited twenty-plus years for this. An hour or two wouldn’t kill him.

A few minutes later, he and Chip were basking in a local diner’s frosty air. Too lazy to lift his head, the man linked two straws together, using them to chug at his complimentary ice water.

“You know—” He flopped his head to the side. His father’s blue eyes looked lazily up at his server. “I used to think ‘The Floor is Lava’ was just a game—”

Obviously amused by his trainer’s whining, the Gholdengo grabbed the menu and began flipping through it.

Free of the crimson vines, the ice-electric type let out a series of chirps. Its little feet flopped on the ground, the arms waving happily. Though initially spooked by her own sneeze, ICEE seemed no worse for the wear. But, the second Oz appeared, its pea brain forgot about the woman that’d grabbed its attention. Though, when affection returned, so did those memories.[break][break]

“What can I say?” The man grinned. He ruffled the raptor’s feathers, ignoring the pins-and-needles feeling that was left behind. “She’s a good judge of character.” Trademark blue eyes gave a wink. He could definitely tell Sylvia was fun if nothing else. Which, at the end of the day, was all he cared about. “Just like daddy.”

The reptile loved all the attention. It raised its stubby little arms in an attempt at a clapping. It looked a bit like a Sealeo at the aquarium. At the talk of the hodge-podge scientific corruption, Oz grinned. “The doctors say they aren’t in any pain. It’s like legal Victor Frankenstein.” Plenty of people hated the fossil breeding facility over in Galar. They claimed they were spitting in Arcus’s face. He shrugged. “It’s no different than breeding Snubbull to the point they can’t breathe properly, and no one protests that.”[break][break]

ICEE, though, was healthy from snout to tail. At the last question, the lizard nodded enthusiastically. “The cutest, yeah.” Though this redhead was definitely no Quasimodo.[break][break]

At the compliment, the man feigned bashfulness. He raised a hand to hide his face. “Aww! You’re going to make me blush!” Obviously, judging by the lack of color, an exaggeration. His grandpa’s genes were tough to beat, after all. At her request, he gave her a quick once-over. She looked like an extra on Ghostbusters. “Yeah, sure!” He jerked his thumb down the street. “We can take my car if you want—” Though that suggestion would put a lot of female antennae up. He knew that. “Or, hang a left up there. Either way’s fine.” His eyes dropped briefly to his smartwatch.[break][break]

He was below his 5,000-step goal anyway.[break][break]

First, they’d stop by the local snazzy club. The place had showers that’d make Versailles jealous. It also had some clothing options. Though, he wasn’t sure they’d really fit Sylvia’s aesthetic. Polos and golf khakis didn’t seem to be her thing.[break][break]

At the introduction, the CEO nodded. “Adebayo. Ozni Adebayo.” He put on his best dazzling grin. A hand was offered. “But everybody calls me Oz.” That and boss man.

[attr="class","text"]“Nah.” Ozni lifted his broad shoulders in a shrug. He thought back to the times they’d spent together. All the not-so-subtle glares the two shared. How they smiled for the camera and lost it the second the shutter closed. The CEO almost reached over to ruffle Absalom’s blue locks—stopping himself with his hand half up. “They’re total squares.” Mom was tolerable. But dad was something else. Though that distaste might be because no room could hold their egos. [break][break]

Not all coconuts liked acknowledging how close they fell to the tree.[break][break]

As the kid spoke, Oz leaned over slightly in an attempt to lessen the height difference between them. But he didn’t go so far as to kneel. This kid just saved his bacon, there was no need to patronize him. “Sounds like hell, kid.” The man shook his head. He’d been sheltered but not like that. When your only supervision was servants, it was pretty easy to get away with murder. “So, now what? You on your way to Kahuna?”[break][break]

The older man brushed his fingers across the phone in his pocket. When was the last time he’d reached out to her? Christmas? Had he even sent that message? Eh. No biggie. She knew he cared. “You sure she just wants you to be a kid?” He lifted his hand conspiratorially. “Seems like she Hansel & Gretel-ed you to me.” The only time his family let them traipse in the wilderness was with a tour guide, two bodyguards, and a fully stocked RV. [break][break]

Surprisingly, he agreed with the sticks in the mud in this scenario. A fact that gave him indigestion. “I’d be pretty worried too.” But it wasn’t like he was subscribing to diaper monthly any time soon. “Pokemon are pretty dangerous.” He jabbed a finger at the Dodrio for emphasis. That monster had given him bald spots! Three of them![break][break]

Though, it seemed he didn’t need to tell Einstein Junior that. The kid started off rattling facts like a panicked high schooler that memorized Wikipedia. “I guess they really are of three minds.” The one now was probably anger. When he mounted up, Joy probably took center stage. Then, when he tried to play hide-and-go-abandon, sorrow took the driver’s seat. He sighed. “I wasn’t trying to keep Kaz. I just needed to stop him from disemboweling me.”[break][break]

He snorted. “I’m more of a warlock myself.” Find some deep, dark god and milk it for all the knowledge it had. Capitalize off of its ability and take the world for your own. “But Merlin’s pretty cool—just not sure you can pull off the beard.” Oz stroked his hairless chin in thought.[break][break]

“HAH!” The CEO laughed as he wrapped his fingers around the ball. It’d gotten stuck in the middle head’s gullet. “You’ll have to try harder than that, Kazz-Matazz!” With a jerking motion, Ozni pulled the ball free. In return, the Dodrio lunged at his now closed hand. Its knife-like beak drew a bloody line across it. It pulled its head back, the red stain on its tip jabbing in the air like a needle. “RIO! RIO!”[break][break]

Oz hissed, sheer stubbornness keeping the ball in place. With a burst of red light, the troublesome bird vanished. He grinned at the kid, waving the Pokeball. “I don’t suppose you want a bird?” He grinned. “Three-for-one special?[break][break]

SURVEY #1 -What do you like to wear to the beach or for swimming?
Swim trunks! They have to have a mesh liner too. Back home I had a huge collection. The funnier and brighter, the butter.

I have to go with Arctovish. Guy's always looking up.

SURVEY #3 -"What is the most pressing problem you have at the moment?"
Well, I was just kidnapped by some EDM DJ, and my mom pretty much adopted my chauffeur. I'm trying to work my way through that mess.

SURVEY #4-"Do you have a bedtime ritual? What is it?"
I'll usually go for a lap in the pool or a quick run on the treadmill. I then check my emails one more time before bed. I usually take a bubble bath before trying to get some shut-eye.

A good reputation.

The day dad's biggest business meeting was canceled. The old man was forced to spend time with us at the beach. Headshotting him with the Super Soaker is still the highlight of my life.

I'm sure there's something. It's just not coming to me right now.

I'm not actually sure. Aside from grabbing a beer or wine cooler, I never open the dang thing.

I love building blocks and stuff. My basement is basically brick heaven.

He met Mint’s grin with one of his own. It wasn’t hard to find the director on set. They were the ones calling the shots. “Aww! Look at those cheapskates go. Daddy’s so proud.” He sniffed melodramatically, handcuffs rattling as he tried to lift his hand to his mouth. “Bet kidnapping is not covered though. Fine print is a biiiiitch.” That was why he made a habit of reading everything. Or, at least, most of it until he got bored.[break][break]

At the talk of Bern, the CEO breathed a sigh of relief. The last thing he wanted was for the driver to take a hit for this. “Good. Guy deserved a vacation.” And, even if this dude was lying, there was no way he could tell. “I doubt mom even notices a difference..” This was, obviously, sarcasm. Bernie was a good hundred pounds heavier than Oz with skin the color of milk. And, of course, he had bulldog eyes—not the sea blue eyes Oz sported.[break][break]

The request to stop squirming is successful. The last thing he wanted was cheap makeup in his eyes. That stuff smarts. “If this breaks me out, I’m suing.” Hopefully, these kidnappers sprung for the good stuff. The organic, vegan, fuzzy-wuzzy heart stuff. At the talk of pain, the CEO chuckled. The noise is stilted and awkward. “You don't have to tell me twice. Pretty sure half the girls ae serial killers.” He doubted they’d give him a coliseum thumbs-down, though. Tech bros didn’t bay for his blood.

His lip poofed out in a faux pout as he wiggled in his chair. “Come on, man, that’s not—” He blinked. A hand moved to wave the nearest make-up cadet away. The CEO leaned over to peer at the ringleader, his chair balancing on one leg. “Wait, did you say morning?” Just how long had he been tied to this chair?! “What time is it?” If he missed Price Is Right, he’d be a grumpy sally.

Oz contemplated the idea of overbearing parents. One’s that actually flitted around you like you were the coolest flower in a field of butterflies. His parents were rarely around—too busy making themselves look like awesome people. It was no wonder he used to call his nanny mom. While these memories weren’t exactly nice, Oz’s reply was given with a grin. “Must be nice. Pretty sure my dad doesn’t know my name.”

At the talk of sisters, his forced boisterousness faltered. Growing up, his big sis was the only person not paid to give him attention. They played with and tolerated him out of an actual sense of affection. Gods, when’s the last time I actually saw her? It’s been years. “Older sisters tend to have their heads on straight. I'd trust them too” The charity staff was met with a preen. Sure, he didn’t actually get to fight on the front lines any more, but he did do good.[break][break]

“Are they? Biology’s never been my thing. I’m an inorganic science guy.” He’d just picked him up out of some abandoned crack den in town. Which had still been a good trip. He not only got Princess Lei out of the deal but also a picture of the crappy apartment mom’s favorite soap star grew up in. As Oz stared at the Dodrio’s beady eyes, he felt a shiver roll down his spine. The kid's words drew a snort—what a serious little squirt. “Me either, but Kaz has me wondering.”[break][break]

At the question, Oz flashed Absalom a thumbs up. “Right as rain. Just a little wore out is all.” Glancing the way he came, he marvelled at how far he’d gotten. How the heck he’d be getting back to his Tesla, he had no idea. “Illusion stuff’s pretty cool. I'd go for the whole evil witch grandma schtick. See how nice people are to me then.” If fairy tales were anything to go by, everybody would be a dick.

Staring the fox up and down, Oz nodded. “Pretty sure a guy like me would break her back like that.”

At the sight of the sandwich, the CEO mouthed a silent ‘thanks.’ Bird brain was a monster but he loved food. With a squawk, all three heads turned toward the bread-mystery-bread sandwich. In seconds, nothing remained but crumbs. While that was happening, Oz reached for the bird’s Pokeball.

But the third head noticed. It shrieked at him, grabbing it in his break. Then, with an evil glint, it moved to swallow it. “Oh no you don’t! Give me that!” With a shout, Oz dove for it, trying to get his hands between his beak and metal. So preoccupied was he with this that he didn’t notice curious Pokemon starting to gather.

Which, he couldn’t blame him for. This really was like a comedy skit.

By the time Ghost spoke, Oz was already planning a straw hat photoshoot. It’d make for a kickass summer campaign. And, if he went barefoot, he could even pull off a yokel look. But the other man decided to just smash his poor heart to pieces. “Awww.” He pushed out his bottom lip, resembling a pouting pug. “Way to be a buzzkill, dude.” Now, he could always buy his own chapeau, but it wouldn’t be this guy’s hat.[break][break]

Before he could whine more, the ranger brushed him aside in favor of an ant. With a stunned blink, Oz stepped out of the way. Confusion colored his words. “Sure, man. You do you.” He was used to people asking for advice and autographs. But being ignored? What a weird sensation. He wasn’t sure if it made him like Ghost more or less.[break][break]

This ponderance ended as the Steelix took the field. A whistle tore past Oz’s lips as she expanded to her full size. Blue eyes paused at her eyes, noting the long lashes. “Somebody’s a thicc girl.” Though he didn’t this fight seemed fair, the CEO didn’t turn away. This marooned sailor guy seemed like the reckless type, and that meant watching him battle would be fun. Then, of course, there was the fact that he wanted to see how hard it was to crush a Durant.[break][break]

The Rage went off without a hitch. Oz and his walking buddy offered up a series of golf claps. “Nice job! Any idea what you want to call it?” Oz would name it Duck. Just to be a rebel about it. It’d be fun to see people’s face when a bug came out instead of a bird.

That and he’d have to duck if someone threw a giant metal ant at him.

[attr="class","text"]A nap sounded good, huh? By the time he noticed the air glittered, he couldn’t keep his eyes open. His Pokemon did the same, minus GL1TCH. But the Porygon-Z wasn’t exactly a hero. He just circled his trainer’s head, beeping at him curiously. When the time came to return to his ball, he did so happily.[break][break]

Ozni regained consciousness slowly. His tongue felt like a block of lead in his mouth—the surrounding tissue dry as a Galarian’s joke. Instead of plush faux leather, he was sat up in an Office Depot clearance chair. The fabric was itchy. His arms were handcuffed to the arms.Well, someone’s gotten himself in a little pickle. Resisting the urge to open his eyes, he soaked in what information he could.[break][break]

He tried his best to keep his breathing down. What these guys didn’t know would help him. It might give him a better idea of what’s going on. Right now, he figured it was one of three things: an avid fan wanting to Misery their way through Fifty Shades. A prank by one of his rich Alolan buddies. Some broke-arse rube looking for ransom money.[break][break]

There were at least five or six people around. One of them—with a surprisingly chipper voice—was calling out orders. As the make-up brush touched him, Ozni pretended to stir. He did so slowly. Blinking in the bright lights. “Nnngh—what’s—” He dropped his gaze to the brush. He hoped that stuff was vegan and aluminum free. A hostage situation was bad enough without him breaking out in hives. Deciding to play it cool, he stared up at the nearest Rocket. [break][break]

“You could at least try shade-matching, babe.”[break][break]

Brushing off the peon, he turned to face Mint. “Alolan Air better give my points back for this.” He sighed, wrinkling his nose as it started to itch. Leaning back in the chair, Oz focused on the ceiling for a minute. It wasn’t really a defining feature. The CEO did his best to seem nonplussed. Even if some part of him was terrified. “So, who put you up to this? Atticus? Chloe?” This kind of prank was just like them.[break][break]

“Can we take five?” He grinned. “Daddy’s got to tinkle.”

The good samaritan talk was met with a grin. “Well, your mother did one thing right.” His mother, meanwhile, subscribed to the belief that nothing was her problem until it came knocking at the front door. The old man, on the other hand, usually was the problem. “I’m the same way. We donated like a gazillion to charity last year.” Not that he knew which causes. Letting other people do that stuff was charitable too.[break][break]

Ozni turned to Absalom with a sigh. “I’m not. He obviously isn’t happy with me, but he won’t leave either.” It was just like his mom before she got a divorce. Determined to make being miserable is everybody else’s problem. “Pretty sure he's laid a curse on my ancestors.” As they drew to a stop, the CEO waited a minute or two before clambering off. His hands and body shook as he struggled to catch his breath.[break][break]

“Pretty neat trick, huh?” Oz murmured as he stared at the untransformed Zoroark. “It’s like a Swiss Army Pokemon.” A raucous caw made him shiver as the Dodrio picked up speed. Did Oz mention he got jealous? “RIOOOOO!” His shoe hung from its beak like a serial killer’s trophy—designer tags and all. “Look, Kazooie—!” His eyes widened as an Exeggcute rolled right into its path, rattling the bushes as it went.[break][break]

Channeling all of his pretend softball photo energies into the throw, he tossed his last Pokeball at it. Fingers crossed, it’d be a ot chiller than this demon bird.[break][break]

Seemingly ignorant of its near collision, the bird drew even with the trio. Its beaks clacked together as it dropped the shoe in front of Oz. It seemed almost proud of itself. Then, without warning, it began tugging at his braids, like they were worms it fancied dinner. “OWWWW! HEY! Come on!” The free head twisted around to face Absalom, its beady eyes equal parts curious and amused.

Ozni loved a handful of things above all else, and his grandfather was definitely one of them. It took a special 90-year-old to go out in a base-jumping accident. The younger Adebayo doubted his dad had even been up a mountain, much less jumped off of one. So, he took that single word as an invitation. [break][break]

“Yeah, mining.” He swept his arm in a propeller motion in the general vicinity of the mine. “That’s where we got our start” He didn’t make a move to specify who we was. He figured that’d be obvious. “My gramps about worked himself to death in a place like that, saving every penny he had.” As if just mentioning him deserved reverence, Oz pulled his helmet off. “Eventually, he saved up enough money to open his own paper mill. And Adebayo Holdings was born.”

He waved his hands idly. “Then came dad, a divorce, and baby Oz in a baby carriage.” Or, more likely, in a nanny’s arms. He doubted the maternal unit even knew how to unlock a stroller, much less push one. These days, he tried not to acknowledge their start in toilet paper manufacturing. Even the toothpaste and shampoo had way better optics. Today’s advertisement was pulling double duty—a new scent of men’s body wash and an anniversary special. [break][break]

At the snapping, Oz lifted his hands up—a universal sign of peace. “I didn’t say anything about you being an invalid. Anybody needs a break after climbing a mountain.” Right now, he was dredding the trek to the rendezvous point. At the talk of recovery, the CEO bobbed his head. “Guessing you got hit by one of those meteors or something? This place’s been a real ring top lately.” If he didn’t love the good PR so much, he’d have ran home ages ago.[break][break]

The Slowpoke’s appearance received a dorky grin. He’d always loved those pink pig-dog-otter things. They made for killer memes.

“I’m filming a commercial.” He sighed. “The old man really jacked up our iage.” The environmental disasters he caused often got him spit at. Then, of course, there was the supposed carcinogens and child labor stuff. And, somehow, Oz thought high-budget commercials would fix it. Next to him, the Gholdengo mimed a photo shoot, its fingers clunking together with a hearty thunk.

Attracted by the noise, a Duosion appeared. That thing made him think of mad scientists. It looked pretty hungry too. “Yo! Bud?” It turned. “Do you want to come with us?” It turned upside down, the orbs in its body swirling. “There’s science.” Chip nodded, his head resembling a golden bobblehead.

The Duosis had zero idea what was going on. It shook its head. Shrugged. Jiggled up and down. That looks like a yes to me. A ball thudded into its side. The little squelching noise it made was super gross. Oz loved it..
