a glance at the poochyena and mienfoo told mika everything she needed to know. two like souls, united in their bloodlust, excited for a fight. mika recalled her pokemon at their own expense, but it seemed like mienfoo and sunflora weren't the only ones with a penchant for sticking their necks out towards danger. [break][break]

mika looked between the little devil and her pokemon, a brow raised. "oh?" not indignant or scolding, but just a neutral curiosity. if candy wasn't satisfactory, what kind of apology would work? [break][break]

"in which case, we could let them go at it. i don't particularly mind if everyone's okay with that." she motioned at her mienfoo, who maintained a serious look despite everything. at the same time, the ranger handed a small box from her bag to her sunflora, letting it rifle through its contents to satisfy the urge of going through someone's things. [break][break]

"but i agree, i would've likely gave you candy anyway. please enjoy some with your pokemon." mika hands extra candy (mostly an assortment of mini chocolate bars and lollipops) to the other, a show of goodwill. but she still left the invitation open for battle. if their mienfoo and poochyena wanted to fight, they could. if the fight no longer seemed enticing to the other girl, then that was fine, too. the sudden maneuver done by the bug pokemon caught mika off guard. the excitement verged hard into the territory of nervousness, mika holding on even tighter to queen zing for fear of falling off. so this was the control and precision needed to balance the speed and fun of it all. as they continued flying into the forest, mika realized that she hadn't been paying attention to any other pokemon, not even registering the presence of the wild slakoth or nuzleaf whatsoever. [break][break]

instead, she focused on continuing the flight, trying her best to experiment in the different ways that queen zing could be flown. mostly the pace started slowing down, a sign that she was soon ready to land. they only needed a perfect time and place to land, mika having experienced her near full of excitement for one day. [break][break]

but if there were any pokemon to be found as a last minute catch, she wouldn't pass up the opportunity after coming this far in. [break][break]

"ready to go?" mika adjusts her bag, her long navy-blue hair tied up into a tight braid behind her. the raging dust storms and swirling sands present their own challenge, so a pair of goggles to protect the eyes is necessary. she fastens a blue-tinted pair of goggles around her head, but has extra pairs should noel need them. [break][break]

it's one thing to go adventuring into the desert in search of strong pokemon, but a totally other thing to travel with a friend. mika likes to consider this another training session, something that will strengthen her and her teammates, building bonds that will support their future battles with other trainers. [break][break]

and also, it's a chance to spend some time with a budding friend. noel had agreed to go with her, but mika just hopes she won't lead him or the rest of their pokemon straight into disaster. [break][break]

in all honesty, mika hadn't expected to win the battle. but the moment that noel's hisuian goodra falls down, defeated and tired, her world comes to a standstill. [break][break]

they won! it isn't just a dream or a hopeful wish, but a reality unfolding before mika's very eyes! they won! [break][break]

"o-oh." they seem just as surprised as noel on the fact, having expected things to go the other way. from her talonflame's recklessness to her arctovish's simplicity, she had pegged the match a victory for the other trainer, instead. but she is stunned into moving, carefully urging along her arctovish, congratulating it on a job well done. "you worked very hard. thank you." [break][break]

she places an affectionate hand on its head, rubbing softly. the fossil fish pokemon merely hums in content, and then disappears in a ray of light after being summoned back to its poke ball. [break][break]

then mika goes towards noel, crossing the battlefield, pale sand crunching beneath her feet, seabreeze tossing her hair. she stands before noel on a precipice between then-and-now, from the trainer she'd once been to the trainer she could be. and this potential would have never been made possible if not for wonderful opponents like him. she takes his hand, and shakes it firmly, the smile on her face brightening ever-so-slightly. "thank you, noel. i had a blast. and this feels like scratching the surface. i'll keep training because next time i might not be so lucky." [break][break]

and there was promise of a next time. there always would be, because even though their meeting happened by chance, mika feels like their friendship is meant to be. so she'll train even harder in anticipation for the next time they cross paths, with new pokemon and new strategies in mind.

she waits patiently. that's one of her own strengths, mika supposes. the ability to wait, to put their own needs behind someone else's, to not think of themself until the very end. she smiles faintly, hoping to give off an air of calm and acceptance. alia can go at her own pace, it's not something easy that she's learning to do, after all. [break][break]

and the initial aversion to going deeper in the water is normal. but as alia jolts, mika is quick to react, grabbing hold of the other woman to make sure she doesn't flail in the water, or worse, panic herself into sinking. there is an art to horror, and the way it exists in deep waters, the silence of drowning and the quickness of it. without each other and their pokemon, either ranger could fall to the depths of the lake and no one would know. [break][break]

thankfully, it will never get to that point. mika supports alia, holding her steady when she starts to waver, reassuring her that everything is okay. "no need to apologize," mika insists. "you're fine, you're fine." she is firm but gentle in the way she handles alia and makes sure the other doesn't sink. yet once the other is steady, mika is quick to retract their arms, and let alia do her thing. [break][break]

and it turns out that alia really is fine, because she finally succeeds at treading water! at the sight of her pupil moving with her head above the water, mika smiles with pride. "that's—" but they are immediately cut off with an unexpected laugh, the bluntness of alia's joke cutting through mika's calm exterior and hitting her in all the right funny bones. "you're so funny!" they have a rare outburst of pure emotion and joy, with a bit of relief mixed in there. if alia can get this far, then she's already halfway done with the entire process of swimming! both marshtomp and prinplup seem pleased, as well, and mika nods along with their unsaid praise. "you're doing really good, alia. so, once you feel like you're used to treading, we'll get into the main part of the lesson." the actual swimming, involving proper breathing techniques and broad strokes. there would always be time to learn fancy techniques like the backstroke or butterfly, but for now, just moving along in the water should suffice.

two hours later, and everything seemed just as peaceful as oliver had left it. no strange noises, no signs of movement, no signals from his patrolling pokemon that anything was wrong. were the rumors just rumors, after all? or were they just lucky that nothing had happened yet? [break][break]

"nothing yet," mika said. "let me help you put some of these things away." he came back well-stocked for their venture. mika was good at preparing food, but her cooking was only a little bit above-average. perhaps that lent itself to the reason why she wasn't picky with food: she had no right to complain when her own cooking was just okay! she threw in a couple of frozen pizzas into the oven. mika also handed out the pokemon food to everyone, saying hello to oliver's boltund and lycanroc. she made sure her own pokemon were well-fed, and was about to ask oliver a question, when—[break][break]

perhaps it's considered strange to empathize with an opponent's pokemon, but as mika watched the gooey dragon retreat into its shell, she couldn't help but feel a sense of familiarity. she knows what it's like to hide away from the world, to seek personal safety first and foremost. yet just as this hisuian goodra had been going above and beyond, so is mika nakayama in an attempt to strengthen her battling skills. [break][break]

there was no working in halves here: she'd go all in, as a show of respect, and as proof of her willingness to succeed. even as the goodra's dragon pulse barrels into arctovish's body, the fossil fish holds steady, and shakes off the energy waves after they settled on its body. [break][break]

mika exhales. this isn't going to be an easy battle. noel's hisuian goodra seems highly defensive, and it would take more than just a single hit to get the gooey dragon to fall down. in which case... "arctovish, let's retaliate." she thinks about using fishious rend again, but remembers the disadvantageous type matchup. instead, she decides to fight energy with energy, beam for beam. "use aurora beam!" [break][break]

at once, arctovish focuses its energy, a bright orb of ice-blue light forming in front of its large forehead. it lets out a resonant cry as the aurora beam spirals forward, blinding rainbow colors exploding in ice shards upon hitting its target. for such a strange and peaceful-looking pokemon, arctovish sure had a talent for fighting. mika smiles at this display of teamwork and power, happy that her trust in one of the newest additions to the team is well-placed, after all! the increase in speed took mika by surprise, a quiet gasp escaping her as shalin's queen zing flew even faster, the vibration of its wings intensifying. it was all in an attempt to keep up with shalin and hayabusa, though mika sensed a bit of playfulness in the act, her surprise slowly morphing into a sort of enjoyment, the breath rising into a laugh as more wind picked up around her. [break][break]

she didn't want to scream (which she would have to in order to be heard verbally over the noise), but the look on the blue-haired ranger's face screamed thank you for this amazing sight. [break][break]

they passed by more and more pokemon as they moved, too, but mika didn't see the need to stop for them yet. while she wanted a lot of pokemon for various purposes, she didn't need every new pokemon to be caught right away. so she ignored the pangoro and mandibuzz for now, but did her best to look out for anything more interesting as they moved. [break][break]

up ahead, mika spots the silhouette of a strange pokemon. at first glance, she thinks it's a primeape, but once it comes into full view, she realizes that's not exactly the case. [[break][break]

annihilape. and a strong one, too, judging by how there are virtually no other pokemon in its vicinity. perhaps the other ghosts are afraid of it and its sheer rage? mika thinks that anger is something they could work on together, though. even if annihilape is set in its ways, wouldn't it be better to have a purpose, rather than wander aimlessly? [break][break]

she tells sora and san to corner the annihilape, and do their best to take it down without crossing the line into maiming. they understand at once, and the two fly off in different directions to execute their plan. several minutes and a tough battle later, and the rage monkey pokemon is knocked down, groaning as not even its pure hatred can get it to get back up. [break][break]

mika tosses a poke ball, and the rest is history. "we got what we came here for," she says to her companions. "let's hurry back before it gets dark out." [break][break]

ah, a drifloon. mika has seen these pokemon before, and she also knows the stigma behind them. their tendency to lure in children and lead them into danger is a bad one, indeed. though part of her thinks that she could make use of it, the rest of her is too cautious about the dangers. [break][break]

a thorough scaring should do the trick. "san, this one is yours. don't go overboard." and on their command, the hydreigon flies towards the balloon pokemon, the scowl on its face brightening into a half-smile — a sure sign of san's excitement for the battle to come. [break][break]

it takes less than a minute for the drifloon to pass out, its body falling to the ground. the wind picks it up and drags it away, and mika feels better that it's headed farther from civilization. the less chance to hurt children, the better. [break][break]

they regroup and continue moving forward. [break][break]

mika had a goal in mind for today's outing: secure a ghost-type pokemon for her team roster. as long as she had at least one pokemon of each type, dual-types withstanding, then she felt like she'd be prepared for most anything. but ghost-type pokemon were a little harder to find, and so she headed towards mt. pyre and its adjacent route 121 to get a glimpse at the tricky specters. [break][break]

her team today consists of sora the talonflame, san the hydreigon, and inari the vulpix. sora simply because he is with her most, if not all, of the time, and san so he could easily subdue any ghost-type pokemon they come across. inari is just along for the ride, but mika appreciates the small fox's presence, anyway. the little fox pokemon glances curiously in every direction, but stays close to her trainer despite everything, her tiny body warm and soft against mika's heels. [break][break]

"stop," she says aloud. sora comes to a roost on a nearby tree branch, while san turns around and maintains its flight mid-air, curious at mika's sudden direction. "do you feel that? the air has gotten colder. everyone, stick close together." [break][break]

she worries that noel will disapprove of her rash tactics, but when he acknowledges them, instead, she can't help but be taken aback — face flushed with the warmth of pride surging through her. he's serious about battles, she realizes, to the point where he appreciates when the same energy is reciprocated. mika has never considered themself as a true battler, but if it means getting stronger and meeting people like noel, she might try to take it more seriously from this point on. "you know, you surprise me, noel. i knew you were a good trainer the day we met, but now i see that you're better than good: you're great! so i'm going to give it my all!" even if the type-matchup is already stacked against the ranger, mika won't back down. she shares a look with the hisuian goodra, nodding once in agreement. they were friends before, but right now, they're competitors. she inhales quietly, drawing up her courage to call out the first attack. "arctovish, fishious rend!" [break][break]

at first, it seems like the fossil pokemon either doesn't respond or doesn't understand her, and mika's heart stops in her throat. but then, the large fish pokemon blinks once, twice. after the third blink, it moves with surprising speed, dragging its body through the shallow waters and heaving itself onto the sand banks, throwing its entire body weight onto the hisuian goodra, water and scales splashing against the other's sticky surface. the type matchup is really unfortunate, but mika is impressed by her arctovish's raw power, as well as its willingness to listen to her despite being their first battle together! her heart soars, a smile slowly stretching onto her face. looks like they stood a chance, after all! [break][break]

she smiled warmly, happy that everything was going along so well. and as they moved back downstairs, the ranger spared a quiet hello to aloe's chingling, the bell pokemon's brightness and energy quite refreshing, all things considered! and just as mika was going to say something clumsy in an attempt to fill the silence, aloe pressed a button against the wall, and revealed the stunning night sky past the windows, a cool breeze coming in from the outside. [break][break]

"oh, wow." was all mika said in response, taken in by the sight. it took her a moment to realize that aloe had prepared a backless chair for her to sit on, and she hurried over to it after a while, thankful for the chance to rest. "with a view like that, i'm surprised you're not stuck here 24/7." her attempt at small talk, just a wayward comment followed up by a tiny chuckle. they were being honest, though. it was the beauty of nature that made it so easy for them to be a ranger, to spend hours lost in that night sky. [break][break]

instead, they were resting together, cigarette smoke filtering out through the window, the smell sardonic but not unwelcome. mika themself didn't smoke, but they did have the occasional drink here and there. so while aloe unwinded on the couch, mika helped themself to some of the wine from the refreshment fridge. she didn't mind that it was the canned kind, and took a few sips comfortably before responding to the tattoo artist's inquiry. [break][break]

it took everything in her not to spit-take right then and there. "well," she began with a laugh, "being a ranger is kind of like being a travel doctor. always on call, always ready for the next big thing. lots of nature, which if you like that kind of thing, can be nice." needless to say that she was an active person who loved nature, so it was the ideal job for someone like her. but as for any rangers who had caught her eye... "if you can believe it, i've actually been on a few dates with fellow rangers before. nothing's really worked out, though." [break][break]

it was more like, mika didn't find the spark with anyone the way she had done with her ex. normally, talk about her previous relationship was difficult to get out of her, but something about this atmosphere tonight made her feel comfortable — like she could tell aloe just about anything, right now, and it would be sacred if only for a moment. as long as she didn't give away too much. "my ex, she and i...oh, where do i even begin?" she shook her head, a bit embarrassed by how honest she'd been, trailing off due to uncertainty. she was never good at starting conversation or keeping it when it mattered, so maybe aloe could help her out a bit...? [break][break]

mika sits on the ledge of a cliffside, feet dangling over a shallow chasm that yawns into darkness below her. above the ranger, several of her flight-capable pokemon take to the air, meters-high in the sky, wings spread out against the moonlit backdrop. a distant screech tells her that sora is egging on zenith, again, the two avian pokemon competing to see who can dive the fastest. the quiet wingbeats from san the hydreigon, on the other hand, let mika know that the three-headed pokemon is calm, though perhaps searching for a potential target. then, on either side of mika, her kronos and willa float silently in the air. only the wind makes the bronzong louder, metallic body humming and resonating like a deep windchime. [break][break]

she tilts her head back, leaning on the weight of her palms, eyes closed and face bathed in the bright moonlight. what a peaceful night. if she could, she'd stay here forever, becoming one with the windswept leaves and rock formations. Still as a stone under the velvet sky, stars forever shining out of their reach. [break][break]

awoooooo! the tranquility is soon disrupted by a growing chorus of howls, resonant and loud. mika opens their eyes, and sits up straight as she glances down at the mountain path beneath her. there, crossing the trail, lies a pack of midnight-form lycanroc, with several rockruff puppies scattered between. their voices are so raw and natural, mika feels like the strange one for having witnessed such a phenomena, though it seems like she's not the only other human present at the moment. [break][break]

hmmmmmmmm. kronos the bronzong hums loudly, floating ever-so-slightly towards the edge of the cliff, peering down at the pack of wolf pokemon. mika sees the curiosity in its blinking eyes, and realizes what it wants to do. "now, now." she says, "let's leave them be. if they come to us, that's a different story, but no need to interrupt what's going on down there." and they smile as their bronzong concedes defeat, the bronze bell pokemon floating back to its original position. willa the musharna squirms in place, likely sending a psychic signal to the other pokemon to comfort it, somehow. [break][break]

the ranger smiles at their pokemon, very pleased at how well everyone is getting along with each other these days — the autumn moon her eternal yet momentary witness. [break][break]
