so they got around the lightning bolts, but it still won't be that easy. mika realizes that her decisions are certainly starting to take a toll, and while in real life she might have thought to retreat once raikou gained distance on them, she couldn't have come all this way in the game for nothing. [break][break]

and she's not like these experienced trainers or rangers or people in hoenn: she doesn't chase legends, she doesn't dream of myths, she doesn't hope to rewrite history with her own hands. all she wants to do is help people, so when it seems like josh might want to capture raikou, mika has no immediate objections. [break][break]

to think she almost forgot to put in her earplugs! mika's own excitement got the better of her there, so thank goodness shalin always came prepared! [break][break]

as shalin led the charge, mika fell into a more comfortable rhythm following behind her. she kept her eyes on hayabusa's frame and shalin's green hair, determined not to lose sight of either of them throughout this venture. [break][break]

though, the vibrations were surely something and mika hadn't truly realized nor appreciated the speed of bug type pokemon's wings. [break][break]

she watched carefully for shalin's techniques in actually controlling the direction of the ride, and held onto the reins in a way that mirrored most of the commands. pull back with just one hand, and go in a certain direction. pull back with both, and climb, instead. she didn't dare drop pressure, and kept their eyes appraised for any pokemon that might be interesting. [break][break]

the corviknight roosting overhead seemed like a good contender. mika threw a poke ball, and was happy to hear a delicious snap that meant it didn't fight its capture. nice! [break][break]

mika has two goals for today's outing: reunite with a friend, and test out fisk's strengths in battle. the two goals will be met at the same time, since mika and noel have agreed to battle together, and since mika plans on using her arctovish in the fight, as well. it works out perfectly, especially since the ranger's talonflame wants to fight anything and anyone it meets. if it hadn't been a party the last time the two trainers had met, it would've surely fought any of noel's pokemon right then and there. [break][break]

now, it has its chance. and there are few place for a pokemon battle as beautiful as slateport beach, with the deep blue waters and sandy beaches making for the perfect terrain, as well as the shining sun above them and the sea breeze around them. yes, the stage has been set for a fun battle, and mika stands on one end of the beachfront, with noel on the other side. [break][break]

mika says, "ready, noel?" they smile at the other, and toss talonflame's pokeball into the air. at once, the scorching pokemon is summoned, and screeches as it flies in a loop before coming to a stop in the middle of the battlefield. "you can start us off. here's to a good and fair battle!" [break][break]

there was a small exhale of relief, and a tiny smile stretching itself on mika's face. she was happy to work with someone like ever, not only because he was willing to honor her request, but because his sense of professionalism made it easy for her to be around him. as in, she didn't have to fake being sociable or bright, and instead fell into an easy rhythm around the other. [breka][break]

at his comment about the pachirisu job, she couldn't help but give the smallest laugh. "hehe, i see! your experience as a photographer really shows, then. you're very impressive." he made it look easy, and mika appreciated that, because it made her feel like all she really had to do was stand back and watch, which in essence, is all she did. [break][break]

at some point, ever gestured for her to gather near, and mika obliged. her pokemon were relieved that they could act freely again, if only for a moment, and mika was simply thankful that they didn't get too rowdy, especially knowing the unpredictable nature of her bronzong and the fiery temperment of her talonflame. "sure. and yes, that sounds reasonable enough. i'll wait however long i need to, don't worry. oh..." [break][break]

"these are lovely so far." her voice was filled with a heartfelt nostalgia and gleam of happiness. the pictures were already perfect, so she could hardly imagine how much more perfect they'd be with the added effects. would her pokemon be embarrassed if she asked for a copy with some hearts floating around in the shot, too? the thought made her laugh, but then— [break][break]

"what's that in the background?" mika likely noticed it at the same time as ever: a small shape in the distance, the unmistakable form of a pokemon laying underneath one of the trees. it looked like a taillow: perhaps it was injured? [break][break]

mika glanced up from the camera and in the direction of the tree in question. sure enough, the navy blue blur was still there, barely moving, its pained chirping barely audible over the clamor of mika's pokemon. oh no.

the routes leading up to lavaridge town were their own reward for traversing; it tested not only one's speed, but their stamina when it came to scaling the inclines and climbing over the occasional rock or two. mika considered it a good challenge for when she wanted to do more than just a casual run. though by all counts and measures, she was on a casual run, pumping her legs and arms and pacing herself for the rest of the trail ahead. once in a while, she'd nod at the people she passed by on the trail, whether it was a trainer, traveler, or another person trying to get the most out of nature. [break][break]

however, something crossed her path, and it wasn't any normal pokemon, either. while it moved with such speed that it practically blurred, mika could make out the defining tails of a ninetales, but instead of the off-white, cream color it normally is, it looked paler. brighter, somehow. its gleaming eyes and streaks of blue had mika agape: was it shiny? [break][break]

it seemed to be on the run, and it darted away from mika after a second of hesitating. mika figured that a rare pokemon like that might be worth chasing, or at least investigating to make sure it wasn't injured. however, they realized they weren't alone, and they spotted another figure just up ahead the path of her. "hello," mika began to say, "did you see that ninetales just now?" perhaps they could look for it together, since it did cross their paths, after all. [break][break]

is this chase for raikou turning out to be rather reckless? yes. is mika completely engrossed in the situation, regardless? yes. while the ranger is regretting their decisions for the past two or three scenarios now, things are coming to a head, and they won't give up until the game says it's over. [break][break]

as for the lightning strikes... well, perhaps now is the time to change course. up until this point, mika had been toeing the line between her own reserved opinions and the excitement that a fantasy gives her. maybe charging blindly at full speed isn't the answer, but slowing down doesn't seem too intuitive, either. [break][break]

maybe i should try a custom input...? but she's not creative enough to think of what else to do. so instead, she chooses the second option, hoping that neither her nor this virtual josh will come to regret it. [break][break]

mika's face fell at once. she knew josh's moniker, master of faster, was a testament to his skills as both a trainer and rider, but she didn't realize how fast his pokemon truly were until now. suzaku made it look easy, usurping sora with her speed and looking elegant all the while. it was a clash of birds in the sky, but it quickly looked like the tables were turning on sora. [break][break]

they had to do something, lest they give josh an exceedingly large advantage at the start. as the two of them plunged, suzaku's speed and power driving sora down into a plummet, mika's eyes lit up. "talonflame, try and use a tail wind to escape!" [break][break]

mika didn't know if it would work or not, but their reasoning would be that if sora could use a bit of lift and a burst of speed, it could make all the difference between escaping suzaku's clutches or being brought down by it. though it would take more than a single exchange of blows to defeat either talonflame, sometimes morale played a big part in a battle, and sora's tended to waver if he continued facing difficulty at the start of a battle like he was now. while passing by what seems to be a frozen pond, mika spots a round silhouette cresting from the depths, large eyes peering. she makes eye contact with the wild pokemon, and realizes that as the strange creatures swims closer to the edge, it has every intention of playing with her. [break][break]

"...well, if you're so interested, i don't have any choice, do i?" she tosses a ball at the arctovish, and collects it after the capture is complete. she turns to her other companions and nods. "alright teo and san. let's head back."

mika spots something small out of the corner of her eye. she motions for her pokemon to stop, and the trio waits to see what sort of pokemon it is. [break][break]

"a swinub..." mika mutters. a potentially good pokemon, but the way it moves along the ground, sniffing, tells mika that it is very comfortable living its life in shoal cave. in fact, there seems to be a pod of swinub up ahead, very likely the same pod that this swinub belongs to. mika shakes her head, and looks to san and teo. "leave this one alone. let's keep moving."

shoal cave. mika hadn't been here many times before, perhaps just the one in her most recent memory. still, familiarizing one's self with the region's different environments is an essential skill for all rangers. the trip to mossdeep alone had been worth all the wonderful sights and sensations, and now mika can obtain the real prize for having come out here: [break][break]

the pokemon. in a bid to be more familiarized with some of her other pokemon, mika has brought along her hydreigon and walrein. the latter seems to reminisce fondly in this cave, and mika can guess why. "are you from here?" she slowly asks her walrein. teo rumbles fondly in response, and mika gives a nod. "okay, teo. we'll be careful, then. no hurting anyone we're not catching." [break][break]

at the mention of a peaceful trip, mika's hydreigon makes a surprised noise. she looks at him and says, "we are a team, san. we respect the decisions of the team members. if it's a battle you want, we'll train with each other after we're done here, okay?" whether or not san understood mika, the ranger wouldn't know. but the hydreigon makes a noise that sounds like a laugh, so she's hopeful that it understood her, after all. [break][break]

with teo and san at her side, mika doesn't think she'll be too unprotected in shoal cave, but it's hard to tell. venturing deeper within, the ranger keeps an eye on any sign of a wild pokemon, all while making sure their companions are calm in the meantime.

she's relieved that she doesn't have to worry about noel eating. no, if anything, he's proven himself to be a generous host and a strong trainer, and a kind person on top of that. trainers like him give rangers an easier time doing their job, and in mika's case specifically, relief that overly energetic cherubis are not always unwelcome in others' spaces! [break][break]

"oh, you're welcome, noel. how could i say no to such kind hospitality?" and their exchange kicks off their evening together, all of mika's current pokemon mingling with noel's (her talonflame eventually landing and introducing itself to the new pokemon around it), mika and noel talking about battle strategies (they'll have to battle each other sometime, mika decides in her head), and the sun slowly setting after the fact. [break][break]

but like all good things, even their unexpected party must come to an end. "thank you for letting us be invited to the party. you and your pokemon are wonderful, and i'm looking forward to our battle someday!" her talonflame screeches in agreement, and mika laughs as she brings her pokemon back into their poke balls (her cherubi, in particular, had gotten sleepy after eating all that food). she starts walking back in the direction where she came from, waving to noel as she leaves. maintaining eye contact, she gives one last greeting before heading on her way for good. "call upon ranger mika anytime you'd like, as well! bye for now, noel!" [break][break]

ah, rookie mistake. mika always forgets that electric fires are best put out by ground-type moves! it's why she still had a long way to go before she could call herself an experienced ranger. to think that a game like this could provide some realistic insight like that! technology has truly come a long way.
