as the other spoke, it gave mika a moment to assess the person in front of her. to call him athletic might just be a bit of an understatement, he had a build and a drive that mika envied if only because it meant she still had a long way to go until she was satisfied with her own training. still, she wasn't expecting such an easy smile, a charming affectation that didn't go unnoticed or unappreciated. [break][break]

she smiled softly, a small breath like a laugh escaping her lips. "well, you're quite fast, then. you might have even caught up to it if i didn't keep you waiting." maybe if she hadn't stopped them both to think about the matter, they'd both be on its trail, already. "perhaps we can go after it together? it's heading up the path, after all." and they both seemed dedicated to the cause of staying fit, not to mention that if they still wanted a physical challenge, then following the ninetales was the way to go. and it'd give mika a chance to really push herself, after all. it wasn't everyday you met intriguing people on runs like these. "oh, my name is mika, by the way."

mika flinched, taking a step back. she anticipated the impact between the talonflames to be painful, but wasn't quite ready for how painful it seemed. before, sora had been quite vocal, screeching and trilling at even the slightest impact. yet as the battle raged on, the smaller talonflame had grown quieter, opting instead to save its energy for attacks, avian gaze narrowing in focus. it took everything sora had just to keep up with suzaku, and even then it was lagging. [break][break]

but rather than be disheartened, the blue-haired ranger felt a swell of pride rise up within her, impressed by her own pokemon's mettle, and stunned by how riveting josh's pokemon were up close. no amount of preparation beforehand could have readied her for the real thing: electric excitement coursing through the air, two talonflames soaring like comets through the sky. her breath was caught between the then and now, her left hand gravitating towards the flat of her chest, holding onto the surface of her heartbeat as it thundered beneath the palm. [break][break]

ba-dump, ba-dump, ba-dump. win or lose, mika intended to help sora put his all into the fight, clinging onto whatever energy remained after trading explosive blows with suzaku. as the other firebird propelled itself into an expert quick attack, mika knew sora would not be fast enough to react in time, so she just nodded once at her partner, a flash of emotion running through her eyes. [break][break]

forgive me, sora. and the smaller talonflame was knocked back by the hit-and-run force of the quick attack, more feathers falling from its damaged plumage. still, it had some fight in it. still, it wanted to fight, to uphold this battle honorably 'til the end, to leave no regrets behind even if they were headed towards a certain loss. even then.

"use acrobatics again!" in tandem with his trainer, sora the talonflame steeled his courage, and — despite being pushed back by the force of suzaku's quick attack — tumbled in mid-air, but used that momentum to retaliate with a graceful set of aerial strikes. [break][break]

mika's heart alights with joy the moment she sees that josh has become worthy! it's almost enough to make them forget about the state of josh right now, the trials and tribulations they had to overcome together just to reach this point. certainly, anyone that survives that ordeal, let alone thrives in it the way josh does, deserves to have a place beside raikou. [break][break]

the simple ranger does not think that they could reproduce this sort of assistance in the real world, however. legendary pokemon and their powers which they grant their avatars, all belong in a world much higher than mika's. people like her can only dream of having an experience like this, and after completing a majority of the route herself, mika understands why games like these might be popular. [break][break]

regardless, the experience isn't over quite yet, though mika feels content that she has played a sufficient part in it all. when offered a ride back to mauville from josh, she selects the answer true to her heart, smiling all the while. [break][break]

mika's prinplup appears from its ball when it seems that more company is in order! mika has a soft spot for the penguin pokemon, especially because of how gentle and calm it is compared to the rest of the team. but once it gets to be around other pokemon, it starts to become more outgoing. the ranger smiles at the sight of prinplup and marshtomp, getting along already like they're old chums. [break][break]

"heh, i'm glad. and don't worry, i'd never let it come to that, but the stretching is a good trick to keep around water." mika stretches, as well, with a series of lunges and upper-arm tweaks that leave her with a satisfied sigh at the end of it. [break][break]

she nods at alia. "it's nice that they're getting along. my prinplup is the same, not a lot of chances to meet new pokemon outside of work." mika smiles faintly, endeared by their pokemon and their antics. "i agree that ranger work is tough, even at the start. not a lot of room for play." the only one on mika's team that's really got it easy is her baby cherubi, so for that, she feels a twinge of guilt that this is chiyo's first time in a while to unwind. "your marshtomop is a sweetheart," mika insists with a tiny laugh in her voice. "and we must seem like babies to them when it comes to swimming." even if mika knows how to swim, themself, water-type pokemon must still get some amusement out of humans who could never be as aquatically skilled as they are. "okay, first things first. some people like to teach swimming by throwing newcomers into the deep end, first. i prefer to take things step by step." mika starts treading into the shallow end of the water, stretching out her hand as though to invite alia to slowly get in with her. "whenever you're ready."

ugh. reckless actions, reckless consequences. between the deafening roars, sonic booms, and domes of electricity, mika thinks she would've hit the end of the road, and it's only a few sentences away from a grisly game over. thankfully the real josh wouldn't be hurt in this way, right? but then she's surprised, because raikou appears before them, almost cautious and reverent towards the humans before it. did they somehow earn his respect? mika certainly hopes so, they feel as though they deserve it. [break][break]

slateport's infamous night market. personally, mika had never been, but she'd heard enough about it from other people before. from the stories, it sounds like a lively place with tons of good food, some weird finds, and great battles. nestled nicely in the lower district of slateport, what starts as a lazy and slow business in the morning slowly morphs into a nightly festivity. [break][break]

strings of colorful lights hanging from posts, pop-up shops and food stalls, vendors selling unique or strange wares, the perpetual sound of laughter weaving throughout. sizzling fires, delicious aromas of food, children running between adults in a game of tag, pokemon and people crowding around each other. the sound of footsteps and flickering lights, and then, in the not-so-far distance, the uproar of an entertained crowd in the battle facility. the occasional sonic boom or ringing chime to signal the madness inside. [break][break]

needless to say, the night market lives up to its hype. it promises to be as fun as it seems, which means that it'll be a nice time for both mika and julie. all mika needs to do is wait for the other woman to arrive. she glances down at her array of pokeballs in the meantime, one of which contains ruru. better to save the baby's energy for when ami is actually here, after all!

raikou. so this is the great one, the legendary beast of legendary speed! mika feels the excitement all around, but she realizes that the excitement may have propelled her decisions foolishly thus far. raikou's electric attacks are proof of that. [break][break]

retreat isn't an option, but mika wouldn't want to sacrifice all the hard work it took to get here. while part of her greatly favors the idea of protecting josh and taking his place in battle, she also considers the fact that doing so would deprive him the chance of dealing with raikou head-on. and despite the game's direction, she feels as though none of this progress would be made possible if it weren't for josh's energy and passion to start with. just a few years ago, if you asked mika nakayama if they ever anticipated getting a tattoo in their life, much less a large detailed one on their back, the answer would be a flat-out no. [break][break]

but life had a way of surpising you and changing the course you thought was set in stone. mika saw and experienced plenty of things over hte years, her coward's heart burning bright with the desire for freedom — with an understanding that liberation can be as painful as it is sweet. her talonflame's reckless behavior always seemed troublesome, but now it was also seen as admirable, and the inspiration behind this venture to begin with. burning and flying in the same movement, the freedom that came with pain, a firebird reviving itself among the ashes of yesterday. [break][break]

mika was so unsure, but the entire process with aloe had gone by swimmingly so far. despite it being her first tattoo, she handled the pain well, and agreed to stay for a longer session so everything would be knocked out at once. she didn't expect such immaculate service, between aloe's artistic visionary to the refreshments during break times! but as the sky darkened outside, mika knew they were burning the midnight fuel. part of her was grateful but also embarrassed, as though she was somehow making this more difficult for aloe to begin with. "a break sounds good, actually." she carefully held the towel closer to herself, eyes following aloe's figure as he brought out a mirror for her to observe the results so far. "o-oh my goodness. it's so beautiful, so lovely, it's so much more than i ever imagined...!" she could hardly believe that it was her body wearing that tattoo! it seemed absolutely perfect already, but darker shading on the flames could make this beyond perfect, if such a thing existed. "i think darker shading would work amazingly. other than that it's perfect." she smiled gently, endeared by the tattoo artist and their chingling. what a surprisingly harmonic duo! "thank you, aloe."

what had started as a beautiful autumnal day near verdanturf ends in a strange, mysterious situation in an entirely different place. there are many thoughts running through mika's head, but the first one rings true: this particular matter is above her pay grade. solving a murder that's better left to experienced league officials is one thing, but being grouped together with some notable trainers, gym leaders, and rangers, too? that, and the fact that mika's pokemon are nowhere to be found, lead the blue-haired ranger to think that this is some kind of dream. [break][break]

isn't that what distortions pretty much are in their essence? perhaps she should've kept more up-to-date with these things, but too late to regret it now. on the bright side, they aren't the only one stuck in this strange manor. after detective declan walsh's officers get everyone settled, mika's natural curiosity gets the better of her. she gravitates towards the kitchen where a few others are also gathering, and she looks more into this grace character, and her going-ons in the kitchen. [break][break]

after all, both grace suzette and walter waterthyme both claimed to be in the greenhouse around the same time, yet neither of them saw anyone else at that particular location. so might as well investigate one person to find answers about the other, and vice versa. [break][break]

as a result, mika checks the kitchen thoroughly for anything that looks like it could belong to grace. it's not much, but it's a start.

mika has taught people how to swim before. it's not a skill that human beings are automatically blessed with, after all. and not all pokemon can swim, either! so to have honed this skill for years and to have a chance to teach others is just one of life's many great blessings. [break][break]

when she was younger, mika even considered abandoning the ranger cause and becoming a full-on lifeguard instead. but who knew that the draw of danger could pull her in so deep? [break][break]

today, though, there will be no danger. just ranger-to-ranger training, and with a particularly friendly ranger, at that. mika wishes she were the outgoing, sociable type of person, but the reality is that she's just not. so it means a lot to her that for once, someone came to her for something, and not the other way around. [break][break]

"you're very welcome. thank you for entrusting me with something like this." they smile softly, taken in by alia's easygoing attitude. at the other's insistence that she now owes her, mika waves their hands in disagreement, quietly saying, "oh, please, teaching you is its own gift. no need to worry about stuff that." [break][break]

and then alia brings out one of her pokemon friends, as a bright and eager marshtomp emerges from the poke ball. the pokemon and trainer look equally excited to participate today, and mika knows that teaching will be even easier when they have a skilled water pokemon beside them. [break][break]

"hello ino, nice to meet you. thank you for helping us out today, as well." mika politely greets the marshtomp, then looks back at alia. "we're on the same page, it seems! i also have a pokemon at the ready for some extra help, but maybe four is a little crowded." [break][break]

that said, there is plenty of space, so if alia doesn't mind a fourth presence, mika would bring out her prinplup, chiyo, to play as well. but before that, she says, "okay, my tip to new swimmers and swimmers that haven't swam for some time... is to stretch before swimming. wouldn't want any cramps, after all."
