The moment he’d heard that Andrea herself was getting into the Gym business?

Well, well, it was time to pay her a visit! However, today was not going to be between Ro and Chomper, since he wanted to experience the insanity of her non-traditional challenge…

…which was basically making a sandwich.

But see, here’s the thing:

Outside of Alto Marean carbonara and some recipes he knew from memory, Lars preparing a sandwich was… definitely bound to result in disaster.

Which was why he was accompanied by some of his more… humanoid Pokémon.

Weather Trio knew he was going to need all the fucking emotional support he was going to get with cobbling a sandwich together.

thread summary: Set at an indeterminate time after Meteno had been handled—in order to drum up some rep for the AQUA initiative, a series of exhibition matches are held. One of the matches features a certain silver Metagross and a black-and-green Hydreigon. Insanity ensues, explosions galore![break]

why is it important?: Oh deer.

Simply put, this is the end of the first chapter of the rivalry between Andrea Vaneau’s Hydreigon and the salthead’s Metagross—as the two had met previously before back when Chomper was a wee Deino (and Andrea here had gotten into some trouble while training out at Mount Chimney here).

That was where their rivalry started, even though from Chomper the Deino’s perspective it was like hitting a brick wall because Deino versus Metagross was so incredibly one-sided…

Fast-forward to here where Chomper had not only evolved into a Zweilous, but also became shiny as well! This time the draconid put up a little more of a fight, but it’s not until this last thread that the two actually get to face off in mortal kcombat (even if it’s only an exhibition match).

(In between the Zweilous vs Metagross and Hydreigon vs Metagross thread, their owners meet and talk some about their two Pokémon raring to have a go at each other while exchanging information about what happened in the Tiered Tea Room. There’s that too.)

This last match brings to a close, the first chapter of a rivalry between Andrea’s Hydreigon and Lars’s own Metagross—since there is a chapter one you can bet your ass there will be a chapter two where Ro the Metagross comes back to even the score!

OOCly, I didn’t realize that this entire arc stretched across an entire iRL year, and ohmygod what is a rivalry if it’s not between two Pokémon and not just between their trainers / owners? See, in this instance Lars and Andrea aren’t rivals but are friends; it’s their respective Pokémon that are rivals—sending the Deino on a Rocky-esque training montage while Ro waited at the top of the mountain like some shining silver mountain peak.

Needless to say, the first part of the saga comes to a close with Chomper blowing everything out of the water and Lars coming to a realization that the ol’ reliable needs some refreshing to keep up with his rival!

Also, a very big thank you to Kost for the saga! It was hella entertaining and my god I cannae wait for part two because you bet your noogie Ro is out for ~~blood~~ a comeback to settle the score!

To put it aptly, in Ro’s own words, “Finally! Someone other than Alpha I can consider a very worthy rival!”

He knew that Lynette was pretty much teetering and on her last legs, however fact of the matter that sheer determination would actually win out and get him the victory?

That caught him off-guard, to be honest!

“To be fair, you actually had me when your other Pokémon knocked my Metagross to his figurative knees,” he cackled quietly as he approached, disbelief on his face as he made sure to confirm that this was the real deal, the actual badge.

“Damn, I actually won?”

The disbelief was still on his face.

“Most of my victories are from non-traditional methods due to my work as a Ranger, mostly—man versus nature, thinking outside the box. But… well, at least I know I can hold my own within traditional battling!”

At the mention of there being too many people, he gave her a wry, knowing grin.

“Hard same,” he said quietly, before giving the becostumed young woman a friendly noogie.

“You know that this is just the end of the first chapter of their rivalry,” he went on with another knowing smirk. “Ro will come back, stronger than ever. You can bet on it.”

While he knew that this was supposed to be promoting the reputation of the AQUA initiative, he didn’t mind taking an L every once in a while.

Not everyone was an infallible battler after all.

“He has a point—I don’t know about you and Ace, but I forgot to change some of my equipment for the dungeon. Oops,” he cackled quietly as he bit back a chuckle at the amount of in-game currency that had flashed across their screens.

“Anyway, let’s get moving, shall we?”

And the next room they found themselves in was… nothing short of enormous, if not extremely grandiose.

“If we came here in the earlier days this place would be a low-pixellated mess. Shows how long it’s been since I’ve last been around.”

He was tempted to actually reveal his mount due to the size of the room, however the unlit statues caught his eye.

“Anyone got some fire they can chuck over there?” he gestured at the unlit torches on the dais. “Maybe we can find more answers if the entire room’s illuminated or something.”

He did notice that there were two doors far off in equidistant location, however how to open them?

He didn’t disclose that it was actually Nevermelting Ice, unless she already knew what it was.

Another fidget of movement caught his eye—he was ready to chuck an empty Pokéball at it when he realized it wasn’t the one he was looking for. Funny.

“Oh. I’m looking for the other version of this. The one… that looks like…” he trailed off before miming what a toilet bowl looked like.

“Wonder if we can find one out here.”

Which was how all the ~~European~~ football matches he was familiar with usually resolved themselves—unless it was a draw after regulation and they had to go into a penalty shoot-out. Geez.

Discerning that his own order was cool enough to be finished, he then picked at it slowly, still trying to understand the intricacies of ‘handegg’ as he called this version of ‘football’.

It certainly didn’t look like the football he was familiar with, though!

When little Josh had mentioned that he’d been smacked in the face with what he guessed was hubris, he could only laugh.

“Well. Everyone gets their ass owned by hubris every once in a while when they’re in way over their heads,” he continued quietly with a cackle as he made his way through his order.

At the mention of time-delaying until the end of the game, he rolled his eyes.

“That is a cheap-ass tactic, to be honest.”

He sighed.

“Well, it’s kind of the same with football—the kind I know, mind—when it’s down to the last five minutes or so it’s just. Violation after violation until someone gets carded and they either get a warning or get kicked out of the game entirely.”

He cackled quietly afterward, realizing that his fries were getting cold. He continued to cram more and more of the fries into his mouth before glancing at the other man’s chin…

“How the hell did you get a scar on there of all places? Were you poked in the face or anything?”

He had to bite back a bark of laughter as the announcer got her Hydreigon’s name wrong—the desperation tactic had clearly backfired on him as he could feel the back of his head starting to hurt.

Adding onto the surprise attack by Chomper—the last-second desperation Crunch was what sealed the deal. While the hulking silver beast did not collapse backwards, but ended up folding under the force of the impact from the Z-move earlier.

He… should really look into changing his old reliable’s move set after this.

Pulling out the scuffed Heavy Ball, he recalled the Metagross.

“Congrats!” he called out from his side of the arena.

The moment their food arrived, the first thing he’d attack would be the fries.

Because he needed as much salt as possible, and man he absolutely wanted to snarf them down as fast as possible. Much hungry as he was to attack the burger he’d ordered, he decided to let it cool first.

“Let’s face it. Time flies when you have too much fun. You literally enjoy telling the story, it’s all over your face. I know you’d give everything for another ride out, even if it’s just—well, even if it’s just the one that dog boy can summon from ashes. Close enough, I think?”

He continued to pick at the fries piece by piece, before looking at the… handegg shenanigans on the television.

“Well, what are your predictions on who’s going to win this game? I mean, coming from behind is possible no matter what sport is played.”

You know that big thing Lars had an inkling about, that was coming?

Apparently this was the big thing itself! He watched quietly, his eyebrows betraying his surprise as they went up watching the Hydreigon rise from where he’d fallen before several things happened all at once—

Another burst of light—only this time golden, coming from the Hydreigon, exploded outward. Lars’s mind went a thousand miles an hour, because—there was no Hydreigonite that existed, right?! Unless he’d missed the memo somewhere?

Instead of a Mega Evolution, though, the power that radiated from the dual-type was very similar to the snarky Mirage’s ‘panic button’ (the Z-Move of which he unironically picked the name) and he realized what was going to happen the moment the silver beast was swallowed by the inky black orb.

“So that was what you were planning all along too?!” he exclaimed from his side of the arena, throwing up his hands at the sheer force of the attack—mostly when he did his own Z-Move he was usually either in the air close to the Iceborne Mirage or riding said Mirage himself!

He could hear the grating noise from somewhere deep within—and for the first time, he felt the strain of holding the Mega-evolved form as the attack came crashing down—

“Ro, what are you doing?!” he shouted as the Metagross literally came riding down with the attack itself, a last-ditch attempt at a sideswiping Meteor Mash from within, a desperate attempt to strike the Hydreigon…

His point about the money for rebuilding was solid, though—where had it come from? He knew as much as the next native Alto Marean that religions structures ran on mostly donations (and a little help from the cultural section of the government, if the option was available. Well in Alto Mare it was available by default).

“I do remember, though. Before I left home the first time. He always had a lot of seedy-looking figures over late in the evenings. And I’m sure they weren’t Sootopolian locals, I knew most of the locals up until the time I left. The frequent guests he had over didn’t look like any bourgeoisie that our part of the neighborhood was known for.”

“So the commercials were right after all,” he cackled; thankful he’d gotten something right for a change! Geez, the way his brain just melted with ~~European~~ football versus the Unovan version of it was really… a sight to see.

Swilling the contents of his glass around, he took another sip from it.

At the mention of one of the Legendary canines behaving the way they did, it brought…something to Lars’s mind.

“I can’t remember if this was just a rumor or if it really happened, but. Really long ago, I heard a story that Entei appeared somewhere when Kyle was… just minding his own business or something. Not sure if it’s a rumor or if it’s fact, but matter is that you mentioned Entei I remembered it all of a sudden. This was like, a couple years ago or so.”

He listened to the other wax poetic moon about the experience, the excitement was evident in the younger Josh’s voice as he went into a rapture-like state at that point.

“I know my friend’s going to say something about how land and air-speed is different, or something like that—hell, I know the Mirage is fast but ‘fast’ depends on who you ask,” he hummed once the other was done.

As for the custom-made head gear that had come from Josh Dragomir, well…

“Let me guess, the speedometer hit four digits or something?” he continued with this wry, yet absolutely shit-eating smirk as he took another drink from his cocktail.

Now that the energy was there for the hulking silver beast to mess with, it would take a few moments for the few draconic projectiles that Ro had managed to catch to suddenly be sent hurtling toward the Hydreigon.

At the same time, with the speed boost still in play, the blur of silver approached with full intent on knocking the Hydreigon upside the head(s) with a boosted Bullet Punch.

But Lars had a feeling this wasn’t going to be enough…

Considering what the Hydreigon was up to? He had an inkling something big was coming.

He knew that they were on a timer—he could only maintain the transformation for so long without overexerting himself.

This—this was going to be a risky maneuver, but what else could they do at this point in time?!

“Ro, release!” was what he would say next—he was allowing the shining silver beast to use the other two moves that were ‘locked away’ due to the slight type disadvantage.

And not a moment too soon! The first whistling noise was the warning they had, before the object impacted the arena grounds.

A grating squeal similar to dial-up noises came from the hulking beast’s maw afterward. Rather than use the next move offensively, it was more—

A burst of Telekinetic energy came rippling into existence; while it would stave off most of the incoming damage, there would still be hits here and there.

Lars noticed that Ro’s legs were digging into the arena floor—a sign they had to end this, and soon!
