Military training was not the kind of thing that washed away after a few years out of service. She kept herself aware of Leilani's movements by sound, keeping a mental image of her location while she fiddled with the device. It slowed her down a little, but it was dangerous to have your back to a stranger, though they were aligned in overall goal.[break][break]

She had had her fair share of betrayals from her own unit in the past. Loyalty to people did not exist. Loyalty to ideals did. And those under the Rocket banner were able to keep any plethora of ideals.[break][break]

But she never wanted to be too hasty in identifying a traitor. So she tensed slightly as Leilani moved quickly to her side, but she was pleasantly surprised to turn her head and see the woman holding a Joltik by its web -- something risky, but the bug didn't seem distressed enough to shock her just yet. "Good catch," she offered, cursing herself internally for juggling Leilani's movements and the device without making an allowance for the rest of the environment. [break][break]

Keep your head on straight or lose it, her first captain had told her ad nauseam. How disappointed he'd be now, if his own bad decisions hadn't led to his death. "Avoid such large attacks if you can. It will make it hard for the device to calibrate if the environment is too chaotic." It beeped unhappily in her hands.

Ameena had initially thought her interest in Rocket would begin and end with her fellow scientists. But the more time she spent at HQ, the more she enjoyed talking to fellow ex-military members, street thugs, and corrupt capitalists alike. There were odd threads of connection between her and these other members. As bustling as the breakroom was, it was easy to give her undivided attention to the colleague across from her at the table.[break][break]

She laughed into her mug of tea as Wesley insisted she could solve the problem with a trebuchet. "You pick the most difficult possible solutions in the world," she observed. He pointed an accusing finger and countered with you admit it's a solution, though. And she shakes her head and takes a sip and all is well. "I would never hire you for a simple assassination." He fakes offense, but then his phone buzzes, and his expression turns all business in a moment. Duty calls, he says as a farewell as he rises to his feet and leaves, answering only when the door shuts behind him. [break][break]

She takes solace in finishing her tea and turning to the sink to clean it. All the while, she shakes her head again with good humor. "A trebuchet to kill during a party at a McMansion. Where do they recruit these people and their minds?"

It becomes like clockwork. She's pretty sure three times isn't enough to call something a habit, but she and Seraphim are used to each other enough that the excursion down to the cavern does not grate on her nerves like it had previously. She is almost comfortable with the area. And like the last two times, they find themselves at the ship wreckage. It has too many secrets to ignore.[break][break]

The ship is floating and active like it was when they left it. She beelines to the captain's quarters and rummages through the notes there. Some of it is completely impossible to follow. However, she seems some diagrams and maps sketched out clearly and well-preserved behind glass. But the information within them... [break][break]

It looks like Ultra Beasts were regular occurrences here. In fact, it looks like nothing else used to roam this land, back then. [break][break]

It causes a hundred questions to sprout up. Why were there so many feral pokemon here now? Were there more UBs here than she had initially suspected? Did it used to be home only to UBs because they were violent about outside pokemon or because other pokemon could not access or survive here?

CONTRARY TO ITS NAME, THE MAJORITY OF THE ULTRA DEEP SEA IS A VAST CAVE-LIKE WORLD. Shafts of light from an unknown source barely penetrate the dark, causing colorful diamond-like rocks to glisten against humid walls. The dim lighting makes the place seem like you're thousands of leagues under the sea... Eerily, an unceasing pulse can be heard like a heart beat that rumbles throughout the realm.[break][break]

Oddly enough, one is able to "swim" through this realm like Water-type Pokemon floating in air.[break][break]

One may stumble upon deep, cold pools of dark water and alien seaweed as they scout out the realm. Segments of this place open up into an astral sea, where islands of mysterious stone are suspended mid-air.

Dusk was subpar for an exploration in general, but preliminary excursions into the area had revealed that nocturnal activity was unpredictable. Thus, someone needed to enter the area and examine if the seismic episodes at night were from pokemon movement or some other source. The odd, tumorous growth of tera crystals in the area could also be the culprit; not enough was known about any of the factors surrounding the area.[break][break]

Ameena was not deterred by the amount of variables. She stood at Station Delta with a mobile seismic monitor hanging out of her backpack, as the rod was too long even when folded to fit perfectly inside. She needed to get deeper in to place the rod in the ground and gather good readings, but it was recommended for all explorers to have a partner given League activity and the paradox pokemon running amok. She didn't know who she was paired with for this go-round, but she was eager to get new readings since her previous geological survey was interrupted with an untimely earthquake.

Aurelie's bravery and quick-thinking helped Ameena stay focused. She did not trust quickly, but she knew from her years in the military that survival relied on knowing the people around you as much as you could -- their weaknesses, strengths, reaction time... And she found Aurelie to be more than up to snuff. And a little funny, with the Megalopolan commentary. So Ameena did not flinch as Aurelie grabbed her hand and instructed her pokemon to blast debris so they could run. [break][break]

With Aurelie's pokemon protecting them from the environment, Ameena ordered her Honedge to navigate ahead of them. It was easy to spot his tassel against the dull colors of the area. "We are definitely close," Ameena stated with confidence. Her training made it easy to keep a mental tally of how far she traveled from where she'd exfil. "Yes, right up here. Rocks have covered the floor of the entrance, but we can get up the rock wall and over the other side to the open air." [break][break]

Honedge stuck herself in the wall and tossed a tassel down for them to grab onto. "You can head up first since you lead us through here," Ameena offered. Regardless of who took the tassel first, it would be a helpful rope to hold onto in case either slipped while climbing the wall. Honedge half-pulled to assist with the process, and soon they would be atop the rocks and able to see grass and open land. "Another day avoiding an early tomb. What a pleasure." Ameena grinned.

Ameena jolted into action as her partner did, though she spent a precious moment watching the tera power before following suit. Her Espathra flew right into the tangle of violence, attacking repeatedly with her usual bloodlust, uncaring of the fact she was fighting a deity. Meanwhile, Munna approached from an unguarded angle and used yawn, but it had no impact on such a powerful divine force. [break][break]

Ameena turned to Makoto as the fight ensued, searching their eyes for the stunned amazement she felt herself. "It is unbelievable that the simulation can so perfectly emulate gods. I feel like I am witnessing them for real." She followed Makoto down the tower, chuffed at their question. There were a billion things that came to mind. [break][break]

"I think the descriptions of RKS do not do it justice. But. I suppose no one could have prepared me for what I have witnessed. I simultaneously never want to be in this simulation again and desire to enter it until I have witnessed every logical end." She was too disciplined to let herself cave into addictions or bad habits. And yet, she was honest about how she felt about the simulation -- it repelled her just as much as it called to her like a siren song. [break][break]

She took a moment to think about it. Then, "I think I would enjoy another run at things."

She considered Xenon's observations. "I have heard paradox pokemon have a connection to interdream mist, which I have yet to experience myself. I do find the paradoxes to be interesting. Many of the scientists I have met lately have had a handful of them at their disposal." She wasn't so childish as to experience FOMO, but she couldn't help but wonder if they were a massive advantage.[break][break]

She put down her seismic sensor and let the rod get situated into the ground before beeping softly, sending out waves. "I was invited to Rocket by , who has a similar body of work. The promise of resources and like-minds for dream research was, well, a dream come true." She considered that many researched her area of interest; while many under-grads did like it, most did not pursue it for long. Some thought it was pointless. Well, many areas of science were deemed pointless until a major discovery. [break][break]

"I am hoping the presence of this area will expedite my own research. If more minds turn to dream research because of the tera and interdream activity, it is all the better." She sounded quite happy about it as she checked her seismic sensor. She did not feel competitive about dream science. All hands on deck, she figured. She wanted to truly access the dream realm within her lifetime.

She wasn't so sure her partner was as cool-headed as he was playing things, but it was hard to assess. The suit made him a hard read, and she wasn't the world's leading expert in body language to begin with. She didn't pry. [break][break]

She was eager to explore the ship again, but it suddenly powered on and rose naturally above them. It moved quicker than she could in this odd air-water environment, but she supposed that the Megalopolans had carefully engineered their equipment to take advantage of the odd atmosphere's impact on gravity. "But what if something is manning the ship? It is not worth holding back now after our trekking this far. We should take advantage before anything comes to interrupt us." [break][break]

It did not take long to move through the ship and realize there was nothing living on board, except... [break][break]

"Eggs? What would lay eggs here?" They were visibly not sharpedo eggs, which had distinct coloring. The stickiness of them made it seem relatively recent. The purple substance... could it be related to the gunk Seraphim had collected? She didn't dare touch it without having something to assess its make-up.

She sighed with relief as bioluminescence made the travelling easier. Having access to more senses helped her keep her wits about, though she couldn't help but feel Seraphim's silence was indicative of some displeasure. The trench had not been fun for her, but perhaps his suit had protected him from the numbness and dread she had felt. [break][break]

She raised a brow at his question but didn't turn so he could see it. Instead, she considered a solid response, wanting to take him at face value. "Fine. The trench was not ideal, but I do not have a fear of darkness. The inability to maintain a strategic line of sight for potential threats was... anxiety-inducing. But I am of a sound mind. You are feeling similarly, yes?" [break][break]

The plants suddenly went dull. Ameena looked forward to see an ambiguous shape. The tunnel didn't give them lots of room for combat, but she released Munna in front of her. The psychic used yawn, one of her more potent moves after years of using it exclusively with dream eater. The shape descended sluggishly before resting against the floor of the tunnel; as Ameena moved closer, the plants flickered on slowly and revealed it to be a dragalge. [break][break]

Ameena made sure not to disturb it as she passed. "The cavern is just ahead." Light from the cavern filtered into the tunnel, just a few meters away. They were back to the ship at last.

Ameena eagerly accepted the final handshake. "I hope we accomplish what everyone else has not." It was a common toast in the labs she used to run when she first moved to Hoenn and finalized her doctorate. Her fellow tired students had endeared themselves through her with their ambition, though their collective upholding of ethical standards kept them from being invited to her own laboratory. [break][break]

There were many questions to ask, but it all revolved around the finer inner workings of Rocket and expectations of output based on investment. She was sure she would have to produce weaponization potential for her research to keep any bigwigs happy, but Rocket could also surprise her with a fine higher-thinking and emphasis on the importance of learning what was previously unknown - pure science. [break][break]

In any case, the demands of Rocket would not halt her progress. "I will reach out to get details soon," she assured. She fully intended to keep up with her end of their bargain, if not for Rocket's resources then to avoid burning a bridge with such a refined and focused researcher.

The trench's chilled temperatures numbed her until she felt incapable of using her senses. The unending darkness rendered her sight useless, if she could even see at this point. The lack of stimulation left her hallucinating slightly. She kept imagining things coming out of the darkness or brushing against her, but nothing was ever there. She was unwilling to look behind her to see if Seraphim was still following.[break][break]

"Aha!" She cried out in other joy, her voice hoarse from unuse. Against the wall beside her was the tunnel, spitting out slightly warmer air from the massive cavern it fed into. She should have been eager to go inside, but she found herself look out past it, into the abyss. Something... she felt something, but she couldn't name it. [break][break]

In her mind, something clearly said: don't look deeper than you absolutely have to. [break][break]

She was not one to overstay her welcome. "We can get inside from here." She placed her flare at the lip of the tunnel to make it easier to see, as depth perception was negligible in this darkness. She hurried up through the tunnel, floating and kind of pushing herself forward using the rocky walls, grateful the odd air-water substance that filled the environment made it possible to move quickly with less physical exertion. [break][break]
