Men tend to feel too intimidated to make any advances on her, and quite frankly she doesn't blame them. From sassy quips to glares to off-handed comments that send them crying to their moms, Erin knows how to keep unsolicited attention at bay.

If there's one physical trait she's particularly proud of, however, it's her hair. This man clearly has good taste, and his compliment is welcomed until she recognizes whom it comes from.

She falters but it's not because of the pretty face (okay, maybe it is a little). The seemingly molded jaw, the tousled dark hair, the playful smile. Erin doesn't recognize him as much as she recognizes his features: it's the very man she framed for a heist not too long ago.

He has the kind of face that stops people in their tracks and Erin supposes he must know it, so she hopes and prays to a god she's too cynical to believe in for her pause to be weaved into such a narrative, for the man to be narcissistic enough that her pause is weaved into any other narrative.

"I go to a stylist to touch it up every month."

She turns away. The conversation would end there, she would get her croquettes after eleven more orders, and her crime would fade into nothing.

Erin tilts her head, feigning confusion at his own confusion. "Why, there's only one organization that keeps everyone on tiptoes around here, as far as I'm aware." Though her initial plan was to ride on the man's imagination, the Rocket name is as good a fallback as any, and honestly the first thing she thought would come to anyone's mind.

Seeing that she was wrong about that, she laughs it off. "I must be letting the rumors get to me."

The man smiles and the charm he exudes is quite disconcerting. It only succeeds in making her more wary. Erin can't shake off the feeling that she's inadvertedly come across someone important, or very dangerous. Maybe even both. She hates the feeling of not knowing. Play along is all she can do.

The gengar wanders farther down the route in search of new playmates as she moves to bring her motorbike along. The safety stand is released, but rather than ride it, she pushes it forward, making it walk next to her.

"Looking for anything in particular?"

Her tone is friendly, but not too interested. She's gauging him as much as she thinks he's gauging her.

The following events all happen in quick succession.

One moment they're standing on the roof, a chilly wind sweeping past their faces. Each of them would feel a light pull as the kirlia

teleports

the entire party right next to the jewelry store. The wall sheds a convenient concealing shadow over them. Another poke at the space-continuum from the kirlia, and she's gone.

An alolan meowth is quick to take the kirlia's place next to them. One paw extended before him, he presents a set of keys to his trainer. Erin takes them at the same time she calls the last of her pieces to work.

[break][break]

The gengar is in his element. Shadows surround him wholly, allowing him free reign of where to go and how to go about it. He hops from shadow to shadow, phases through the shadows beyond the door with ease. His task is to search for the in-house security alarm and disable it.

"It's probably at the back," she guides.

[break][break]

An idea comes to Erin while she watches her gengar go in search of the alarm system's main control panel.

"I want our culprit to be seen around. Maybe have him pass by the surveillance room. Casually walk by, ignore the guard's orders, lead him astray. You know the drill."

Belle moves her arms to each side of her white, dress-like ruffles, and bows. A pretty curtsey for a gentlemanly quilava. She's grateful and, though she'd like to immediately go back to dancing, she also wants to return the favor and gift this kind pokémon a smile of his own.

"Would you like to dance with me?" One of her thin arms is outstretched now, inviting. With the power stored in her horns, she could show him mirages of green pastures and flower beds and rapture, if only he let her.

Wake up, go for a jog, shower, eat breakfast in a quaint café on her way to work. Such has been Erin's morning schedule for almost a week now. Rustboro isn't exactly a city overflowing with green areas and beautiful nature scenery, but she'd found a nice little park close to the hotel she was staying in (thanks, Siri) to take her meowth out for a walk. Arceus knows the lazy cat needed some exercise.

Everything was going well until she saw him.

[break][break]

It's only glimpses and hints of his presence at first. His characteristic red hoodie, one of his many four-legged beasts running ahead of the pack, one too many barks in the distance. Erin doesn't know him but she's seen enough of his dogs to know he is not someone she likes. If the hiss her meowth was directing at them is anything to go by, 24K doesn't like him either.

Avoiding a pack of six dogs that aren't even leashed sounds hard enough a feat already. In practice, it's even worse. She tries to ignore him, ignore the irritation rising in her veins like boiling water when they finally cross paths.

The path isn't wide enough. A cyclist flashes by, ringing their bell; another runner rushes ahead, trying to catch up to their scorbunny; and, in the middle of it all, there's Erin, the man, and their combined pokémon.

[break][break]

"Watch it, jackface!" The insult is not one Erin makes a habit of using, in fact until this moment she has no idea it's in her repertoire, but under the circumstances it feels fitting. "Has no one taught you to use a leash? It's a wonder the authorities haven't done anything with you yet."

Belle likes dancing. It's a fact she's known since long before she was possessed by her trainer's monster and given this ominous name, Belladonna.

She had seen a real atropa belladonna once. Its berries small and black, like eyes staring into the depths of her soul. Pretty lavender-colored flowers covered a potent, deadly power. Next to them, the sleeping corpse of a pikachu laid still.

The kirlia hates this name and is glad for its shortened form. Belle is short, cute, and most days she could pretend it had none of the symbolism associated with the full name.

[break][break]

Belle likes dancing, so that's what she does. She dances to forget herself, to relive a time when all was much more simple and nothing could hurt. She dances until her legs begin to ache and her psychic senses alert her of another pokémon's presence.

Slowly, she comes to a stop. "May I help you?" She opens her eyes to greet the newcomer.

One glance at the growing queue has her wishing she'd called for delivery instead. It's a little late for second thoughts now, she supposes. Another customer leaves with their order placed, and she steps sideways towards the counter. One step closer now. Only thirteen more to go. She sighs.

Given her dissatisfaction, it's inevitable for Erin to wonder which part of the process is holding this queue up: the cashier, the machinery, the process itself, or all of it. The cashier seems at ease talking with customers, but not so at ease with the screen in front of her, though that's not necessarily her fault.

Without a closer look at the UI, she has no way to come with a definitive conclusion. Too many variables led to too many different conclusions.

A hasty customer destabilizes the queue. Erin is caught between a plus-sized woman and a thankfully more average-sized man. When the collective takes a forced step back, she knows she doesn't want to be in the woman's way.

The bump is inevitable. She turns to the man with a muttered "Sorry."

Erin is eerily quiet while the man speaks. With eyes still fixed on the rippling water, it almost seems as if she wasn't listening to him at all. Under her gaze, a lumineon is engulfed by the shadow shed by the bridge, probably to come out the other way. Somewhere farther up the stream, she spots the dark blue shell of a tirtuoga.

Both pokémon she's not interested in catching.

Her eyes travel up to the man. His face looks somewhat familiar, she thinks, but she can't quite place it. "So that's why you were following me?" If words could cut, hers would be a finely sharpened dagger. There's an edge to her voice that speaks of danger, but it's subtle, mostly hidden away by a much more unamused façade.

As easily lost as it once was acquired, Erin lets her gaze wander back to the waterfall. She's not too bothered by the presence: despite his actions coming off as creepy, she figures that if he wanted to harm her, surely he would have tried by now.

"You're free to breathe the same air as me." With a nod of her head, she gestures towards the two pokémon she'd caught sight of. "Catch one of those if you want. Anything beyond that, I make no promises."

When Erin enters the cave, she doesn't have the same problem as her company. Her porygon2 could be seen floating behind her, and Erin's own feet levitated a couple inches above the ground as she made her way across the mud. The use of

telekinesis

is clear. Really, they should have taken the other entrance, but this outcome entertained her. A clicking sound marks the landing of her heels on the ground.

Curious eyes look at the scene before them. A squirtle seemed to have caught Kenneth's eye, leaving the mantine poking its head out of the water's edge largely unattended.

Erin is not particularly interested in the catch itself, but the idea of surfing up the waterfall on a mantine does have a certain appeal to it. She'd noticed what looked like a hidden entrance up there that she really wanted to explore on her first visit. "Siri," she calls, her mind made up.

The porygon2 concentrates on raising the large pokémon out of the water with another instance of

telekinesis

. The mantine struggles, flails in the air at the sudden removal of its comfort zone until it regains its composure—it's partly flying type as well, after all. It releases a

signal beam

at its assailant, which only ends up overriden by a beam of the porygon2's own. Then, the latter charges a

zap cannon

with now doubled chances of success.

Erin looks at her pokémon's actions in approval. Electrocuting the entire canal would have been overkill, otherwise. It would have let Kenneth have an easy go at whatever else lay in the depths of the water, which was a big no-go.

With the mantine quite hurt but still conscious, Erin tosses a pokéball. She needs it conscious if she wants it to be able to surf at all. The characteristic red light of a the capturing device envelops the mantine, leaving behind a remoraid that had until then been hiding under its wing. It falls back to the water and flees while she waits for her capture to be confirmed.

"Have you ever gone surfing before?" she asks casually. As if she hadn't just threatened his life only minutes ago.

Honestly, Erin has no idea why she agreed to tag along with this man. Probably to spite him. Ever since they first met in a mission not too long ago, she'd felt irritated at his existence. Call it hate at first sight— No. It isn't really hate; that'd be giving him too much credit. Unenthusiastic about his existence is more like it.

She supposes she could also use the trip to catch some more pokémon for her team.

Pale blue orbs roll at his speech. "Aww, is the big boy nervous about my presence?" she goads. "Don't worry, if anything happens, I'll be the first to push you into the fangs of a dragon." She doesn't bother answering his request.

Kenneth beats her to entering the cave first, and for a moment Erin lingers by the entrance, wondering if she should give him a scare. In the end, she considers it too much effort for little reward, and follows after him.

Had she been in Meteor Falls before? Of course she had. "Mind your step," is all the warning she offers. He'd notice the muddy ground soon enough.

A zoroark; quite an interesting pokémon to own. Quite rare, too. Even back in their native Unova, she'd only seen a couple of them. She's impressed, but doesn't let herself be too impressed.

Erin gives the photograph a good look from where she stands. She doesn't move to take it, though. Whatever reasons her associate had to keep the picture of a man he claims not to know in his possession, she would let him keep to himself. The man depicted is handsome—he has the looks of someone who uses his charisma to his advantage often. He also looks like a law-abiding citizen whose reputation may go down the drain after their scheme.

"Perfect. I'll have my kirlia waiting for your zoroark to teleport them and my porygon back to us. We can regroup in the forested area east of the city." As if reading their minds, the psychic type materializes next to them. Her instructions had already been issued in premeditation, but she had to be updated with the slight change of plans.

An arcanine might reduce the leeway time they had to take as many jewels as they could, by virtue of its size. They had to fit everything in and be on their way before the cameras went back to normal. Still, it's better than nothing. She can work with this.

Pale eyes turn to the clock conveniently positioned in the center of the city. 00:44 is ticking close to the next minute.

Kyle's dogs are good and precious and Erin finds them irritating. I imagine maybe Erin goes jogging with her meowth at around the same time Kyle walks the dog squad (whenever that may be) and they end up seeing each other every so often, just strangers crossing paths until one day they actually bump into each other and chaos ensues. She insults him or his dogs or both, he yells back, things escalate. Pokémon play date at the local park while they have a verbal fight y/y? Maybe it even doubles as a duo wild.
