circe watches her statue in front of the gym, a giant delphox monument with flames shimmering underneath the hoennian sun. she hopes for it to survive, even when chances are slim.[break][break]

“so i guess, this is it?” the last of her pokémons, a noctowl, is released into her side. the giant bird yowls at the sight of his trainer, the owl is ready for his task. “see you next time?”[break][break]

most days, selena will be at her office in the lilycove gym, buried deep down the owed paperworks and drowning in caffeine. weights under her eyes will be not be as obvious thanks to her master skincare routine but her demeanor will shift with no sense of pleasantries. luckily for billi, this is not one of those days. although exhaustion takes over the pink-haired lady from a marathon of sleepless all-nighters, she energizes herself with a malasada just as when she enters the headquarters, seeing the man with his yamper on the counter.[break][break]

“hey!” she calls out, her casual cerulean dress swaying with her strides. selena’s boltund follows after and his eyes lock with billi’s pup. “nice to see you again.” she would have offered a hand, but the grease and sugar on her fingertips beg her not to. she turns to the recipient, “i’ll take it from here. thank you!”

selena has been here before. whenever she prefers land travel over corvi-cabs, this is the only way to reach lilycove from the region’s western side. this is where she visits Alexei Ivanov in his town whenever she wants to hang out with the fellow gym leader. but just like her previous strides in route 119, there is something off with the recent swarms of pokémons. the purple parade of grass dinosaurs look threatened rather than secure, and it’s least of the things that are telling about what’s wrong.[break][break]

several other trainers stumble upon the horde of venasaurs as well, trying to get past. as for selena, she wants to know what’s happening with them.[break][break]

selena’s face flushes with a similar hue to her hair color. with all the confidence she gathers just to make a mistake with one trivial point in her case—at least Balder Schwartz has dragged the monologue further—with only Bailey Cooper scoffing at her momentary idiocy.[break][break]

she watches them give her a scrutinizing look and returns their gazes with an even scathing one when they stand silent when asked of an alternative. most of the things these people suggest are what selena thought as common sense. of course, they need to evacuate people, build strong forts, mobilize rank and file officers, defend the region, pray to arceus. it’s not a plan. it’s survival instincts.[break][break]

she takes this moment to consider. and to reconsider. is their issue about semantics? because as far as selena’s concerned, even she knows this peace talk has the slimmest of chance to succeed. she’s not deaf to the concerns raised because the gore painted at the screen proves the dangers awaiting. but this gives them opportunity to gather intel, to buy time, to gain advantage when there’s none.[break][break]

she admits she could have worded her reasons with much clarity. much energy has been spent fighting unnecessary fights even as they watch one of their comrades being served to their potential adversaries. a heavy sigh leaves her mouth, the rubbing of temples is deemed necessary after watching others do the same.[break][break]

she retires herself from any more conversation with the ‘hoenn's best and brightest,’ but a determined pair of sapphire orbs focus from Remiel Calcifet's, then Balder Schwartz's, before giving each a nod.[break][break]

for the first time, FERNANDO SILPH’s bravado strikes selena with approval. his words detail her sentiments further with assurance and certainty. her eyes look at his with a newfound respect, at least, by seeing his sheer honesty to protect his home.[break][break]

fingers tap aggressively at the table, her mind is on overdrive seeking answers. past cases. past events. she gets what the councilman means—the idea of negotiation is useless without something to negotiate, without something to gain—especially when they’re dealing with creatures with no sense of humanity. unless they think of something, the idea of diplomacy is just hinging on empty words.[break][break]

“we need it to propose a ceasefire,” she stops fiddling her fingers. ”conquering hoenn may be a breeze for megalopolians, but we need to make them believe they need us.” she pauses, emphasizing her next sentences. “leverage. their knowledge about our world might just be a fragment of what we know about theirs. show them they need us. that they have to cooperate with us.”[break][break]

but the question remains: who will be the one to enter the enemy’s borders? selena tries to fit pieces of information she collated in the entire meeting before grasping what this session might be all about: the need for a new champion, a new avatar. it’s like the council has already thought of a solution even without everyone’s help. like a setup. or a trap.[break][break]

but in reality, it doesn’t matter anymore. tapu koko’s intentions to protect the region can never be questioned. besides, even if there may be just one title, in reality, hoenn has three champions, former and budding alike.[break][break]

“as for your primary concern,” her eyes meet fern’s in a stern gaze, then shoots towards Balder Schwartz. “send him.” her body shifts to face the former champion. “you’ve been in their city, you know what to expect. the nidoking is an unexpected but welcome addition to the team. gengar explodes from the cavern shadows, its destiny tag tying his target into the ground and avoid escaping. but fleeing isn’t what selena is afraid off—it’s the creature’s rampage. the ghost-type bombards the wild pokémon with more shadow balls before it kneels and gasps for air. the trainer retrieves a capsule from her pocket at light speed and hurls it towards his direction.[break][break]
