It’s by no means grand but hotpot is a staple in Kantonese cuisine. Especially around this time of year. The lunar festival comes yet again and this time Fernando spends it with family and friends— essentially his colleagues. Several individuals find themselves invited and allowed to bring others with them, as long as Fernando have a favorable opinion of them.

The Kantoese restaurant has a private section cut off and a large pot sits at the sent of the table. A small motor and the bottom makes sure that the broth continues to flow in a circular motion, helping cook added items while allowing everyone to get a turn to pick as they come around in a loop. A bar in the main room has a surplus of add-ons but all of the meat must be ordered through a waiter. Naturally, this is on the Silph’s tab so everyone can order as they please.

“Should be,” Fernando mumbles as his eyes lock onto a large Kingler claw.

Deft chopsticks jerk forward in an attempt to swipe them up before someone else can lay claim to his seafood.

kyle would have honestly wanted to be in his home alone with noah, but he felt bad that fernando doesn't have that many real friends that he felt obliged to come out of necessity.

"how many of these people actually like you though," he asks brazenly from across the table. "like, i thought hating on you was a thing or something."

with a pair of chopsticks on hand, he picks out the most expensive slabs of beef on the menu that kyle had added to the hotpot for the sole reason of being expensive. he's not quite sure if the taste mixes well with seafood and vegetables, but he assumes that he's not the only one that added their own thing in the hotpot.

he ignores everything else in his peripheral as he concentrates on adding meat on his bowl.

There were too many familiar faces in the restaurant that Katherine would have normally preferred to avoid seeing. Frankly, she was already having second thoughts about attending this get-together. Yeah, sure, she wouldn’t want to decline an invite from Fernando - but maybe she should consider the option next time.

Today, however, it was too late for her to turn and go back to Mauville. The councilman already knew that she was in town.

Avoiding the sea-food that’s being shared with far too many people to her liking, the gym-leader sips from her glass of martini. Her watchful gaze seems to be directed mostly towards the stick of olives that hangs on the side of her cocktail glass.

Fernando drops his sights on the Kingler Claw and goes straight for the Kobe Miltank slices. He deliberately goes after the ones within Kyle’s reach. He can’t snag all of them but he manages to pilfer enough to put a dent in how much Kyle had actually contributed to the pot.

“After tonight? None of them.”

His sneer is met with a blow of steam to his face. It reminds him of his childhood. Except, this time, he’s allowed to be the bratty one. Considering how few Silphs are actually here, no one else has the audacity to bicker with him over trivial matters.

“You’re on my home turf, Lopez.”

when his beef gets challenged, kyle goes for the next best thing on the hotpot instead of scrambling to take the rest. he only manages to get some of it, but the kingler claw manages to go to his chopsticks.

"teehee, my bad," he says without changing much of his tone. "we can just order more of it later."

he returns to his seat once he claimed his prize. while he can probably finish a good portion of it if he tried really hard, it wasn't worth the effort to actually try.

"you can't shun them like that. this is why none of the galarians in this region like hoenn's league."

That fucker planned this from the get go. Fernando tries not to show any displeasure at being hit with the bait and switch but the vibrant vein pulsing over his right eyebrow is hard to miss. Fuck! This is worst than Angle Silph. At least Fernando could beat him as long as he sat farther than a 45 degree angle away.

“And yet they still keep coming.”

It’s all jokes, at least between the two of them, and Fernando trusts those present to read it from their tone and atmosphere. Should they not, this might come off as more passive aggressive than it should. But who doesn’t shit talk in the League? Surely not any of them present here.

With a bowl filled with beef, a sparse line of noodles or two, and red, oiled broth, Fernando rests to eat the fruits of the pot’s labor. Noticeably, Katherine has yet to make a move, so he eyes her, tapping her with his foot underneath the table to save her face.

“Anything you want? We can get you a fork if this isn’t your cup of tea.”

There was nothing wrong with it from her perspective and she didn’t care for special treatment, really. The martini was doing a fine job at keeping her pleased. “Besides, with the way you and Lopez are hounding the meat?” Her eyes roll backwards and she takes another sip from her drink.

“Nah-uh. I am good. Watching you two compete is more than I can ask for.”

Razz felt like he was going to be sick being here. There was way too many people, and if he was being honest he thought about turning the invite down. Though it was a new year and hes already thought about attempting to be more social, but maybe a drink or two would help. He didn't drink much, but this seemed like the best time, he could test and see if it would help shake his nerves. Thankfully he was here rather than his home region otherwise he definatly wouldn't be old enough for it.

For now Razz was content sitting next to Laurence Anderson as he took a small drink, the Meowstic in his lap using his psychic to grab some food for himself and his trainer as he knew Razz did not want to bother the group around by fighting for it himself. Whether or not the cat grabbed it out from someone else well Razz was blind to it. He was content with liatening to the others around

Licking his lips as he packs veggies into his bowl, Kim eyes the others present as he slips the occasional sliver of meat into the mix.

Kim was more than happy to skip out on this event in favor of spending time with Najwa, but the obligation for him to be present at social gatherings- especially one where so many familiar faces would be present- overwhelmed his sense of loyalty.

“Y’all are some wet ass blankets if you ain’t gonna indulge at a hotpot.”

His hand wafts the steam from his bowl up into his face, inhaling gently as he shook his head in satisfaction.

“Smell that? That’s straight up COMRADERY. It’s a GIFT we can sit here, and spend as much of Fern-the man-nando’s cash like it’s nothing.”

His hand waves into the air, calling attention to a waiter.

“I want some sliced Mareep, the best you got to offer. Oh, and the most expensive alcohol you got… whatever that stuff with the “bai” is called. I want Kanto’s FINEST on this table.”

Predictably, Rangers tended to end up sticking together—in this case, Lars had found himself sandwiched close to where Razz was, Meowstic perched on the younger man’s shoulder.

His eyebrows went up slightly as he watched the blue feline Pokemon pilfer some beef slices, and had to fight down a chuckle as he reached out for what he guessed were dumplings.

He was itching to try the Tauros beef shank but decided to err on the side of caution in case it was too fucking expensive and decided on sniping some other choice Miltank wagyu cuts from the other person near him while they weren’t looking.

Hey, it was a ‘dog eat dog’ world out there, right?

He then gave the other Ranger a concerned look that read, ‘Are you seeing this shit right?’ before returning his attention to the bowl he had in front of him.

Yui had sat in silence the whole time. Staring at the adults fight over the hotpot, jesus christ they were like animals.. She recognized only a couple of faces but never really formally talked to them. People who were near Fernando that she watched from afar, she clenched onto her pink dress and waited for the right moment to strike. She grabbed her chop sticks and grabbed the Taurous beef shanks that Laurence Anderson had been looking at. Surely he wouldn't rob a child right? Well regardless she didn't want to find out so she grabbed the shanks and ate them rather quickly to not give anyone a chance to eat it. It was very rare to see her so quiet, in fact she almost always was yelling instead but Yui was not very comfortable with the people at the table. However since she did notice that laurence was eyeing the beef shanks she silently handed one to him with her chopsticks and put it onto his plate. A soft "Here" is all that could escape her lips at the moment. [break][break]

She however was at an extreme disadvantage due to her height, these chairs were not meant for short people which she found incredibly rude eventually she got so frustrated she stood up on the chair and began to yoink as much food as she possibly could fit on her plate like a hob goblin. Growing up in an orphanage made fighting for a food a skill. Or was it the fact she was an actual hob goblin in disguise?

Turning back to the hotpot, Kim’s eyes land on the creature partaking to her hearts desire. a smile spreading across his lips as he watched Yui snatch whatever she could get her grubby little hands hands on.

“See, this is what it’s all about! Take note of her form: she’s in a dominant stance, feet on seat as her hands move around the hotpot swiftly yet agile, not wasting any of that sweet meat she can get her sticks on.”

Kim stands, overanalyzing the feral child’s movements as she pulled in her haul, careful not to get too close and interrupt this bizarre yet mesmerizing creature. He only pulls back after finishing her analyzation, looking over the girl as he stood.

“I applaud you little gremlin, you are the embodiment of grateful.”

Kim begins to golf clap, only stopping to wipe a stray tear from his cheek before beginning again.

As Salem picks some different choices, putting his reading skills to good use to order some seafood Pokémon. As it was from the cat’s understanding that it wasn’t coming out of his trainer’s pocket so he didn’t have to hold back, and he was able to indulge. Never before has he been so excited to be a service Pokémon if it meant he could be outside his poke ball for things like this. Though after a few bites of what they had so far Salem was curious on how other things tasted like, since he knows Razz will eat what he didn’t, Though as he was about to grab at something it seems a small child kept trying to swipe things as well namely the shark which made him pout some. ”Behave,” he comments to the Meowstic who seems to just glare at the small child still, not out of hate but more cause he could.

Though as his boss gestures to him, he doesn’t seem to pick up on what he is trying to say to much. Though even if he is originally from Kanto he doesn’t know too much of these Hotpot things, ”So are these hotpot things common in Hoenn?” He questions ”Or seeming to steal each other’s things?

Fernando only mumbles it, again, to save his colleague face. Inviting Kim had been against his initial thoughts but even Fernando realizes the pull the man has. Despite being an absolute clown, unlike Katherine’s Blacephalon, Kim’s explosion of personality brings people together. Everyone loves the poster boy of Hoenn. Even those that hate him.

And, as funny as it is to see Lars’ get his next bite swept away by a mere child, Fernando draws the line at Yui standing on her chair. “Behave,” he echoes, mimicking Razz. “Or you can eat at the children’s table.” And by that, he means eat alone.

“Tch.”

As her benefactor, especially with Kim goading her on, Fernando’s obligation to care for her comes to surface. He pushes his chair back, taking one last hasty bite, before moving over to Yui’s spot on the table and picking up her bowl.

“Which one do you want?”

Rather than use her chopsticks, he uses the tongs to pick at several pieces of meat.

“Here, here."

He picks at the pieces that float to the top, brown in color, putting two in her own bowl, before placing on in Razz’s as well. “You can tell it’s ready by the color and squeezing it,” he instructs. When he notices Lars go for a piece, he steal one straight from the man’s bowl as well, placing it in Yui’s.

You can still pilfer from the Head Ranger and still have some tact.
