The Hoenn Star Tournament! So that's what this is all about! Zac grinned and took another long slurp of his cola. Fernando was right. Anyone who was anyone knew about the H✩T. Everything about the event just screamed Hoenn. The battling, the camaraderie, the commemorative mugs.
"I'm down for a bet," Zac said, looking at Melody Miro and John Sullivan , "but first Fernando's gotta spill a few Poke Beans. We've all seen the news mate! Silph Co's got a hand in the H✩T again this year, so what's the gimmick?" Zac asked FERNANDO SILPH .
Every time the event rolled around they had something new to offer. Eight years ago everyone had switched Pokemon at the start of the tournament. Four years ago it had been a double-blind bracket, meaning both trainers and Pokemon had competed blindfolded. What had the brainiacs behind the event come up with this time?

“yess mum,” Billi returned to the text because well...let’s face it Alexei was punctual and normally Billi was, but without his corviknight he was left with a slower version of travel. Noivern wasn’t able to carry as much and was relatively nocturnal leaving it grouchy if he had to wake him up. So he had to try his best to find other versions of transportation. Though Billi did arrive at some point.[break][break]

Skin as fresh as pine, eyes bluer than Alola’s waters, and a chest barred with new electrical scars. Though it was clear he thought this BBQ was a pool party because all he had was flip flops and magikarp trunks. “Woop,” he grinned walking in with a cooler. “I got beer! And things!” the blonde commented.

He wondered where Billi Marsh was.

Surely the other hadn’t gotten lost, or something?

Fishing out his phone, he was about to send a message to the other when he—when Billi showed up, literally ready to dive into the nearest pool, if there was one around the area.

Internally, Alexei screamed.

On the outside, though?

“What kept you?” he asked, before moving over and making space so that the other could join him. “I was waiting for you to get here,” he added before he started piling up a rice bowl and getting the flames going again for the grill.

Okay, he was maybe slightly hungry, but had to wait for the other so that the younger wouldn’t feel so isolated.

Eyeing the new injury that Billi sported, his eyebrows went up for a few moments before he turned to the topic of discussion. Having lived in Hoenn almost a decade now, he was aware of what the others were talking about.

There was one definite little snag, though—Alexei wasn’t much of a traditional battler. He knew his strengths lay in the non-traditional style of earning their ‘wings’, and so he wondered just how would he be able to determine an individual’s character by simply watching their ‘traditional’ fighting style.

…well, that badge he left with Skyler was due to the captain’s efforts on the naval warfront, a different reason altogether.

Out of everyone assembled, Alexei was sure he had the most ‘insane’ version of a non-traditional way of earning his badge, and so he wondered—how insane would it be if he had to challenge them all to take the non-traditional way of fighting—

It would surely take too long.

Either way, he then busied himself by frying a few pieces of meat once the grill was hot enough once more.

A HEARTY MEAL BEFORE SUMMER'S DEATH MARCH

FERNANDO’S BOWL GOES UNTOUCHED. His purpose for the meeting becomes abundantly clear as he reserves his actions to either cooking or explaining the tournament. Like the father he would never be, Fernando looks out for his own before himself.

“Competition within competition,” he muses with downplayed approval.

The fact that John Sullivan and Melody Miro already have trainers in mind puts him at a steep disadvantage. Only one trainer lives rent free in Fernando’s head and choosing kyle lopez as his representative would surely cause them to come together to protest.

“Indeed,” he answers with equal eye contact. The fact it comes from the one Gym Leader he can never get one-on-one time with spells a bad omen, as if decreed by fate. “Otherwise I would never find the time to schedule an appointment to battle with Hoenn’s greatest Gym Leaders. Silph Co.’s office will be closed to commemorate the Golden Week of battles.”

The fact that Zac catches on so quickly puts Fernando on edge. He’s ready, naturally, but the joke (if that) holds more truth to it than imagined.

“A gimmick revealed too early and prepared for is not a gimmick at all,” he slides in with an expert’s improvision. He looks to changes the subject with the same urgency as the staff replaces their charred grills.

“The bottom four who perform the worse should be responsible for our next outing.” Not much of a punishment but one that promises another meeting of the League’s best.

"Alright, alright," Zac says, smiling at Fernando's cunning evasion. "Nothing wrong with a few secrets. I can wait."
He put some fresh strips down on the new grill and chewed a mouthful of plain white rice. "I like the idea of another one of these, but just paying for some meat isn't much of an incentive. Even if it is some top-tier beef."
Zac looked around at his fellow gym leaders. Everyone was so well-haired. From Glitch and Melody's luxurious pink, to the stylish, functional cuts of Doug, Noah and Fernando.
"Lowest scorer shaves their head!" Zac said, laughing at the idea. It was a classic bet in his hometown, where most people cut their hair short for Summer anyway. "Oh, and beard," he added. Zac knew from experience how strange he would look with only half his hair.

"Hah maybe top four who do the best get vip tickets to my next concert afterwards." she says playfully as she had to try and entice it a bit further to raise the stakes that were currently not too spicy.

noah laughs. "can you imagine though? melody shaving her head?" he shifts as billi take his seat. rears shift to accommodate like migrating bouffalant. "but sure! i don't mind getting a freebie dinner. not-at-all."

he crosses his arms and leans back onto the cushioning of their seats.

"He was makin' a pit stop at the beach shack, clearly." Doug quipped at Alexei Ivanov with a grin, turning his gaze towards Billi Marsh.

"'Ello, Baywatch! How's the Vivillon hunt goin'?" Asked Doug cheerfully as Billi walked into the premises looking ready for a beach party, his grin growing wider at the mention of beer. A playful edge tugged at the youth's lips. "Oh, hell yeah. Stuff I can't legally drink- Give it 'ere."

Nothing like making all of Hoenn's Gym Leaders complicit to illegal drinking.

His grinning countenance barely shifted as he turned his gaze away from the walking beach party and towards FERNANDO SILPH and Zac Ramsay instead, a measure of curiosity within him.

He had only been in Hoenn for 3, now 4 years- and he had missed the previous Hoennian Star Tournament. He was not aware there was more to it than pure battle.

And it seemed like he wouldn't be hearing much from it today, what with the head of Silph swiftly changing the topic to a more pressing matter.

Oh hell, the loser had to pay for their next outing? Of all 8 people present? Doug's eyes popped wide open, alarm filling his chest.

Nope nope nope!

Zac blessedly came to the rescue.

"Zac, ya glorious bastard, we can't all be you and just pull off any look we want!" Doug said with a laugh, running his hand through his black locks of hair dramatically before (and gently) slamming his fist on the table. "Yer on! Hope yer ready for a second haircut!"

He didn't particularly mind shaving his head, being in the military and all, and it was a hundred times better than having to pay for a whole lot of top tier meat cuts.

Doug's new economic capacity as both a Gym Leader and Military Officer hadn't quite registered in his head yet, you see.

Unfortunately, not everyone agreed with that bet. The idea was shot down almost immediately by Melody Miro, which... Well, he couldn't blame her, really. That was really pretty hair.

"Hngh..." He swallowed down a groan, reclining against his seat. Shaking his head, he grinned, a bead of sweat rolling down his neck. "Fine. Just gotta win."

That left only one question in Doug's mind as he leaned forward, placing his chin atop his palm.

"So who ya gonna call?" He said with a grin, tilting his head. He had his fair amount of choices... few of which could probably pull off a clean sweep; but he trusted them to not be bottom of the barrel, if nothing else.

Unless Calliope Marks accepted joining in. Then he might actually stand a chance. He really wanted to give Hideo Kino or Eris Halla a chance, though...

"Just leave that to us!" Doug said to noah faber, grinning at the man. The many brances of Hoenn's military forces would be working overtime within their Intel Gathering and Covert Divisions to help carry out the event interference.

His own Company would be hard at work; Sgt. Rosario had looked rather pumped herself.

he'd been kind of checked out through the entire thing. well, at least he was pretending to be checked out a little bit. the more he heard and the less he spoke meant that there were plenty of people who would absolutely think he was just an airhead to not pay any mind to. and he liked it like that. especially since he was technically in the lion's den.

"melody if they shave your head we can just get you a pretty wig, and then the wig can be different sorts of colors." he nibbled on a carrot stick, one of the few vegetables that happened to be within his reach. he wasn't vegetarian or vegan but he always did have an issue with body image. and right now he felt fat and gross and while he knew he wasn't he couldn't switch his brain off. it fucking sucked.

the idea of an outing stuck out in his mind though. "how do we decide what sort of outing it is though?" he had a couple ideas of who he could sponsor to come into the tournament. his new friend Miles Sharp came to mind or maybe even Chu-e Choi ... but he wasn't sure if either of them would want to... or maybe even Cillian Quinn would have fun doing it. just so long as the person he had in the front was someone he could trust to be strong. "i want to go to an amusement park." and if he was stuck planning the outing then he absolutely would bully that forward.

noah faber did point something out that would make melody worry a bit. All of the gym leaders in one spot would leave hoenn open to rocket surely trying to pull something. Her recent excursions were enough to cause he some genuine concern. [break][break]

"Well...speaking of security, I could lend my aquatic Pokémon to protect the waters? I don't wanna sour the mood but I'm more worried about the other cities we leave open during the tournament. If we're all in the same spot we can put up a fight surely, but what about the other cities we leave open? does the league have enough capable trainers for that?" [break][break]

she asked being the newbie of the group unsure to how extensive the security of these events were. "Are we gonna outsource some trainers? I'm not very knowledgeable on Silph co or Macro cosmos and the sponsers. Personally, if they were all thinking of picking their ‘champions’, Alexei was going to have a lot of trouble with his personal selections.

For one thing, majority of the challengers that had gone through his Gym had taken the non-traditional challenge, so he was definitely going to be more than a little lost when it came to picking someone who would battle in his place.

But then that brought the question—

What exactly was the twist that was going to happen this year? He knew of the tournaments held previously, but at the time this had last happened he was still working odd jobs and only watched them on television, definitely not the same as where he was today.

As for the losers who would have to pay for the next outing…

He inwardly cringed, because holy shit he did not want to shell out for whatever insanity the others were planning (because let’s face it, everyone was going to be competitive and try to win as much as possible).

Arceus forbid if it ended up being a cruise—there was no way he was going to get on a seafaring vessel of any kind ever again.

Obviously, without question Fortree would be on his watch. He had a sufficiently-sized armada to cover the air, as well as on the ground…

He reached for another few pieces of cooked meat and ate them quietly, trying to parse what other information he had to deal with.

The first and foremost problem was this: who was he going to pick as a ‘representative’, if things ever got to that?

Thanks to glitch maverick's question, FERNANDO SILPH laid down the final rules for last place's punishment.

"Sounds good to me." Doug said, leaning back against his seat with a relieved grin. At least they could choose something they could actually afford if they lost.

With noah faber's and Melody Miro's questions prompting the big man to reveal a few security details, Doug's smile slipped slightly, his posture righting itself. He was familiar with the usual way League did things; and likely, so was Rocket.

"Please keep us all updated on any abnormalities." Doug said after a moment, smile gone. "I'm sure none of us will mind missing out on some sleep or bowing out of a match to deal with anything that happens. We're only one teleport away."

Making sure the event was carried out smoothly and any rocket activity was immediately rooted out was top priority, as far as he was concerned. He had youth on his side to deal with exhaustion.

John Sullivan's reassurance is bright enough to oversaturate his doubts. he chuckles, the similarity of their energies bolstering him enough to grab another strip of meat from the oily, caramelizing surface of the barbecue.
