"Don't worry about me!" Luka insists when Matias turns to her, urging him away with a wave of her hand. "Look after yourself! I'll be fine!"[break][break]

Will she? Distracted, Luka keeps glancing between fights. From Matias' struggle with two opponents, to that awful clown that keeps pestering Bonbon. She doesn't notice the Aura Sphere careening towards them until it's too late.[break][break]

There's no time to get out of the way. Luka still makes the foolhardy decision to step in front of MATIAS SILPH before he's struck, but someone else beats him to the punch. Her Buneary takes the full brunt of the attack, the force knocking her back several feet. She immediately falls.[break][break]

"Bonbon!" Luka screams, racing towards her Pokemon's crumpled body. The Buneary looks like a discarded toy as she lays motionless on the pavement; small and hollow, as though she's lost all her stuffing.[break][break]

And then, the rabbit's small body begins to glow.[break][break]

Soft, round features elongate. Stubby arms and legs become powerful limbs, while ears stretch into a mound of pink fluff. Luka can only stand and gape at her Pokemon as she evolves, a true act of friendship in defiance of the strife erupting around them.[break][break]

Her Lopunny now wobbles on too-long legs, unaccustomed to her sudden height. But the rabbit's eyes narrow as they fix on Lucario and she sprints forward without delay, launching a High Jump Kick straight to the face.

blastoise (m) torrent - water pulse, iron defense, hydro pump, rain dance, protect, blizzard

ash (m) blaze, solar power - dragon pulse, inferno, hurricane, subtitute, rock slide, flamethrower

blissey (f) healer - life dew, heal pulse, copycat, soft-boiled, minimize, protect

a click sounds and suddenly he's back in kanto.

the AURA SPHERE careens towards them, and though matias is ready to react, to counter it, luka's buneary leaps in the way, taking the attack for them.

"bonbon!"

instead of assisting charizard, blissey's HEAL PULSE travels across the distance to the injured buneary as its shape starts to shift, wrapped in familiar energy. matias has seen enough evolutions to know what's happening.

"GOOD SHIT, BONBON!"

it's hard to contain his excitement because he understands just how far luka and her buneary have come. like a proud big brother, he watches on, clearly distracted.

but his pokemon can hold their own. blastoise's HYDRO PUMP continues to search for blaziken while charizard's FLAMETHROWER soars towards lucario.

bad dreams / dark pulse, shadow ball, dark void, facade, haze, frustration, z-move

♂ speed boost / blaze kick, mirror move, agility, flame burst, low kick, counter

what was this woman doing? why did she keep getting in the way? it was very annoying, and lulu was practically baring teeth at her.

the bunneary’s sacrifice, however, tickled her with a sick grin—only before the glow that followed, which promptly soured it again. how good for them.

her face only grew more and more severe as her team were both knocked into the ground by assaults. ”fuck,” she spat, paying them little mind as they tumbled. she might’ve held back then, if not for the fact that once again, she found herself disrespected by a silph.

”LOOK AT ME!” she screamed across the field.

”DARKRAI!”

a god of nightmares rose out of the scrambling crowd, eliciting screams. maybe this would get their attention.

a DARK PULSE was launched towards the newly evolved lopunny.

Luka's never felt powerful before. Her Lopunny can feel it, the energy and adrenaline surging within her paws, chittering and excitable, and it passes onto her trainer as well. It makes her feel more solid, for a moment. Bolder. The protector, not just the protected.[break][break]

Luka cheers on her teammate with a whoop and a holler, and is surprised to hear a small cheer from elsewhere in the audience. In a way, that little scene had been unintentionally heartwarming, and some of the league affiliated rally behind it. Showing strength in the face of adversity, kindness triumphing, just for a moment, above hatred and strife.[break][break]

But swept up in the triumph of the moment, she forgets just how dire the situation is.[break][break]

Darkness consolidates on the field, shadows taking on substance and form when Darkrai appears. The smile on Luka's face is snuffed out like a candle, and their opponent once again has all her attention.[break][break]

"What is that?" Luka gapes at the dark form, her knees going weak under the sudden pressure that blankets the field. Bonbon squeaks and stares as well, but the adrenaline keeps her going. Riding high off the energy of evolution she charges, as if she can really meet a legendary head on.[break][break]

She realizes her folly a moment too late. The rabbit's eyes widen and she skids to a stop, tries to turn around and flee the coming surge of energy. But there's nowhere to run. They're walled in on all sides by pedestrians and antagonizers alike, and just like her trainer Bonbon is unwilling to put them in harms way. The blast doesn't hit her head on, but it's enough.[break][break]

This time, Bonbon doesn't get back up.[break][break]

A strangled cry rips from Luka's throat as she throws herself over the barely twitching form of her Lopunny. If this places a target on her back, she doesn't care. Her bag droops from her shoulder as she tries to pick up her Pokemon, holding a limp paw in her hand. The contents spill out onto cobbled stone; a Luxury Ball clicks gently against her foot. Luka glances down at it, and in desperation releases the Pokémon inside.[break][break]

With a mighty roar her father's Blaziken erupts from the ball and charges into the fray, talons wreathed in flame and beak razor sharp, eager to sink into Rocket flesh. He lunges forth with a screech and tears into whatever's nearest, spitting fire and attacking with wild abandon.

and just like that, bonbon falls.

"LUKA!"

foolishly, she charges into the thick of it, putting herself in danger as she tries to recall her lopunny. wisps of MAGICAL LEAVES float through the crowd, and a second later, virizion appears in front of luka, ready to defend her.

matias tries to approach while his pokemon continue to battle the lucario and blaziken, though his gaze stays fixed on darkrai. what the fuck is that thing?

the rabbit was down, and lulu was, of course, grinning madly. served these pink-haired assholes right. one ignoring her, the other challenging when they clearly had no business in it… but her satisfaction lasted only a breath. she craved more.

especially now, with matias' own ace in play.

sounds of horror drove her energy, emboldening her.

”oh, what? you’ve never seen a darkrai?” a fond glance to her hovering patron was enough to signal it. ”then allow us demonstrate its power.”

the skies began to darken until, at least as far as they could see, day had been fully blotted out. their surroundings fell to a night so ultimate that not the tiniest trace of a star could be located. it was unearthly. a chill set in.

then, their deepest nightmares would come to life, as the legendary’s Z-MOVE took hold—the only trace of existence, the only sights in a traumatizing world of sensory deprivation.
KNIGHT OF TERROR: darkrai PARALYZES its opponents by summoning their deepest fears. the surrounding area becomes pitch black.

meanwhile, the rest of their assaults fell silent. lulu’s voice slithered through the a dark, a noxious taunt trailed by a low cackle.

”try not to piss yourselves.”

Everything goes black.[break][break]

But this darkness is unlike Luka has ever experienced. It has a weight to it, a certain unsettling heaviness. It feels very old, and very slow. And it knows, somehow, that she's there.[break][break]

Luka had heard of Darkrai before, in stories accompanying the celestial Cresselia. She'd always thought of it as a misunderstood creature; one associated unfairly with nightmares and terror. Perhaps it's unfair for her to flip her perception on a dime, but she can understand now where the malaise comes from. [break][break]

Fear settles into her so deeply that her teeth ache. Paralyzed with fright, Luka continues to cling to Bonbon in the hopes that maybe she'll spring back to consciousness, that good timing or good luck might save her. But nothing answers her silent plea aside from Lulu Flint's mocking voice and the unsteady pound of her own heartbeat.[break][break]

All her strengths are useless. Kindness, love, hope— everything is dead here. As fear penetrates her very soul, she can feel her spirit wavering, broken. And that perhaps is the scariest thing of all.[break][break]

The last thing she hears before losing consciousness is the scream of her own name, and a streak of green darts across blurred vision. [break][break]

She wakes eventually in a bed she only vaguely recognizes as her own. There's a dull ache at the back of her head as she squints into the light— for the moment, the burn of it against cracked eyelids is excruciating.[break][break]

Her eyes slowly adjust and MATIAS SILPH swims into view above her, accompanied, surprisingly, by her Blaziken. Too tired to question it, Luka simply accepts this as a mystery to delve into later.[break][break]

"How did you— t-there was...I'm sorry," she croaks out, raising a trembling hand to grasp Matias'. She clings to it like a lifeline, seeking out the inherent comfort of human touch. "We lost, didn't we? I got us into this..."[break][break]

However Matias had gotten them out must have been nothing short of a miracle. But Luka gets the impression that they had survived by the skin of their teeth— perhaps by sheer dumb luck. Her head pounds, and she rolls over onto her side. It's too much to think about right now.[break][break]

"Thank you, Matias. I think I owe you a lot more than I could ever hope to repay."[break][break]
