Contrary to what some people would believe, many of the things Mars enjoys the most in life are quite simple indeed. On a day like this, it’s even something as calming as watching the wild fish pokémon swim while sitting by the water – the fishing rod by his side resting completely unused despite it’s line being ready to be cast at any moment.

He had planned on going fishing for a change of pace from doing so out in deeper waters, but as it turns out, he had just ended up watching the fish instead. For now, at least.

Today was—

One of those days.

He knew he was close to getting as many of them as possible, but word on the street was that Scyther were going for quite a bit, yet he had no idea why.

Well, he already had two of them (appropriately-named ninjas, too) but there were rumors flying around of another form that supposedly existed. In the end, though, they were just that.

Rumors. That didn’t have a grain of truth in them.

However, fact of the matter was he was certain he didn’t have the complete ‘collection’ of Bug-types that flew, so here he was, out near Oldale, still with the fancy, dapper cane. It still sucked walking, but he had to keep walking otherwise he was never going to get better.

Little did he know he was going to be in for a surprise today.

Somewhere up above him, two Pokémon trailed him from the skies—one of them being a blue-plumed Braviary; the other a Salamence.

Apparently, Hoenn being Hoenn, too damn high, to the point that Mars isn’t even surprised when spotting the familiar figure of Alexei Ivanov in the distance – cane and all.

While the banker is distracted, a sound wakes the white Zeraora, its whiskers twitching before wild yellow eyes fall upon a Luvdisc trapped in a pool created among rocks with the low tide. Before Mars can do anything about it, Fulgora approaches, deciding to go “play” with the poor helpless fish..

He thought he was going to be out here alone, but as it turned out—

“Oh, hello Mars!” he returned the greeting with a wave of his own.

“Never thought I’d see someone high-up on the corporate ladder down and out here. Got a day off from all that paperwork?” he continued with a chuckle.

He then noticed the other had a feline Pokémon and that it was heading over to where it had spotted a ‘playmate’.

“You have one of them too? Do they like, leave cat hair around, hack up hair balls and scratch at everything?” he inquired, tilting his head in the direction of the Zeraora.

Somewhere behind him, an Armaldo looked up from its sleepy stupor, shaking its head and then falling asleep again. Nothing from the two ‘eyes in the sky’ so far. At least, nothing too interesting yet.

Alexei’s chuckle is matched by Mars’ own, a moment being taken to stretch up. Technically, he had come here to go fishing, as made evident by the pole resting by his side, but there isn’t really a point in explaining that.

When the gym leader comments on his Zeraora, Mars looks at it too, a smile tugging at his lips when seeing the Electric type scare off a Crustle that tries to steal its “playmate” as if it were an easy dinner.

”Cat hair is always a struggle, you don’t even want to know how many lint rollers I go through in a month. You have a Zeraora? Doesn’t seem like your sort of pokémon.”

Yikes, that was a lot of cat hair if that was the case, considering how many feline Pokémon there were—and knowing the other man, he definitely had a personal horde of Meowth; much like how he had a horde of four different avian Pokémon species running around!

“Oh, those?” he continued, tilting his head at the cat that had chased away a Crustle.

“They had them up as a prize during the summer tournament last year. I’m surprised I was able to get my hands on one, myself. They were pretty rampant, I know several people who managed to get one as a prize. Was that where you acquired yours?”

Not too far away from where they were conversing, a Galvantula slid down a thread of silk, mandibles clicking and looking around—before skittering away in retreat.

Mars most certainly does have a hoard of Meowth, but most of them spend their time at their own cattery at the bank’s corporate HQ when not working on advertising. They have employees who look after them, and naturally, POG Bank’s cleaning crew is well compensated.

Still doesn’t change the fact that there’s a few cats that do spend a lot of time at his own offices and home, though. Like Cash Money, Dollar, and of course, Fulgora.

”Bet the birds are pretty bad too, huh? Feathers everywhere?”

There’s a chuckle, but Mars continues to watch his Zeraora, taking the opportunity to chuck a pokéball towards the poor Luvdisc while Fulgora is distracted with the Crustle. The feline swings his tail in annoyance when seeing his prey is gone, but soon enough he moves on to bothering a Shelmet – its hard shell making for a particularly fun too.

”Oh… Yeah, something like that. He was also among the ones from the tournament. Who knows, maybe our Zeraora are siblings.”

“I had to request for a new aviary to build just for the Toucannon. There’s so many of them… Remiel Calcifet gave me a shiny one from the party, so Sam has a mate now,” he chuckled.

As for the feathers?

“Yeah, they get everywhere too, but some of them are usable… like Skarmory when they shed every year. Lots of usable scrap metal and all that.”

There was a Staryu sunning itself on the surface of the nearby lake—and with a singular shriek, a blur came screeching down, just as the Water-type launched a Bubble Beam attack; but the Salamence swerved out of the way (still suffered a glancing blow) before clamping down with a Thunder Fang and snatching the Staryu out of the water.

A brief aerial fight ensued, with the Staryu trying to aerial Tackle the Salamence; however the draconid countered with a Scary Face and was met to the face with another Bubble Beam.

A final Thunder Fang sealed the deal, and the Staryu was dropped close to where Alexei stood—before it could hit the ground, a red beam of light attempted to catch it before it landed with an unceremonious crash in the dirt.

Some would say things like those are to be expected, but Mars has never been of that belief. He could have given them any random pokémon, after all, and instead he chose things he knew (or hoped) the recipients would be fond of.

Just like how Mars himself had chosen gift for everyone, and how Alexei had given him a Meowth, out of all things.

Before they can keep discussing bird feathers, something in the water catches his eye, the large Alomomola being impossible to miss due to its size. Mars whistles, calling to this Zeraora’s attention, and thus the huge fish is soon hit with a THUNDER PUNCH after Fulgora swiftly jumps from rock to rock in order to get closer.

“Telling you now, I was definitely surprised at the Toucannon—I thought she was just normal until I noticed her beak wasn’t the same color as Sam’s was,” he chuckled.

This time another swooping noise came down from somewhere behind him as a Dottler peeked out from somewhere—and a Braviary’s shrieking noise tipped him off that it was indeed Kyouya who had come to deal with the Bug-type, having chucked a blob of rainbow-colored energy at the avian’s direction.

Confusion attack versus an Aerial Ace, and the two began trading blows for all of ten seconds as the bug-type backtracked and tried to defend with a Reflective screen but it was shattered by a second Aerial Ace that sent the Dottler flying.

“…I am so sorry, some of my companions can get real violent,” he apologized as he threw another Pokéball at the Dottler to spare it further grief.
