Song of the Guardian

Flickering like wildfire, ochre and scarlet light dances across the stage as if engulfed in an inferno - indeed a faint scent of smoke fills the air, a barely-there fragrance just on the edge of consciousness. In the centre of the stage lie burnt twigs arranged in the shape of a nest, within which rests a soot-streaked egg of paper mache.

Over the audio system begins the soft notes of an orchestral arrangement, the lilting notes of a Swablu's trill are accompanied by a soothing harpsong. In response to the music the temperature of the theatre seems to drop, and a spotlight floods the stage, pointed at the egg which gives a noticeable shake.

One.

Two..

Three...

The paper-mache dissolves away with a pop of silver and teal confetti while the lighting is overcome with in serene shades of roiling blue, turning the centre of the stage into a watery expanse, revealing the Swablu Etienne painted a resplendent silver; deep blue spines jut from his short back, and pointed glasses and some cleverly fashioned paper-mache crest finish the illusion of Lugia, Guardian of the Seas as Swablu continues to SING.

His movements slow and precise, the Swablu hops across the stage towards its front, and as he moves with graceful twirls and hops, ribbons unfurl from the pokemon's wings. Each spread of his cloudy wing, each rhythmic undulation of the ribbons, creates a rippling effect across the stage, the wildfire's tempest quelling beneath his gentle touch of life-giving rain.

When at least his song ends, the melody uplifted by a swell of choral voices, the Swablu tucks his head under one ivory-white wing and the lights dim into an abyssal blue of the ocean's depths.

”We’ve told you tales of fading beauty.” This time, when Mars stands upon the stage, his Milotic is right behind him. Her gold-scaled tail lightly coils around him in the most elegant of ways, and it’s with a gaze as if made of brilliant sapphires that she stares at both the judges and audience.

”We’ve shown you incredible things that words could not possibly come to describe. I could tell you countless reasons why Erato is beautiful, I could pour my heart out with delightful stories, but who am I to steal away the voice of the muse of lyric poetry? May she sing her own songs…” The smile that reaches his lips is one surprisingly gentle, a hand resting on the Milotic in a gesture of affection. Is it perhaps because of the unspoken connection Mars now has to the species, or is it his fondness for Erato alone? He looks at her, meeting her gaze. ”Sing to us, o Muse.”

Turning to the audience, Mars takes a parting bow, leaving the Milotic on stage all alone. Heavy silence overtakes the contest hall, and then, there’s a song…

There’s an ethereal quality to the sound of her voice. So gentle, so lovely, yet so melancholic too. The light notes of a piano and strings make for Erato’s companions in this melody, and together they tell a tale that needs no words to be understood…

Only the will of a dragon that never was.

One by one, delicate droplets of ice fall with every note, floating through the air as if of no weight at all. They melt the very moment their journey ends, these miniscule diamonds of ice too being of a beauty that lasts only a moment.

As if joyful morning dew, Erato had summoned rain for her audience before. Now, the droplets she gracefully calls upon the contest hall come in company of somber yet exquisite notes, their allure being one ever too sorrowful…

Coordinator and pokemon both whisper-argue behind backstage as they began replotting their next move. To what exactly? No clue. He doesn’t exactly know what he’s doing and neither does Yukina. At this point they might as well go what they know and wing it. Yukina could improvise a pose or a dance. She was good at that. And Lana didn’t need much to pull from the ghost stories floating around in his head. Hopefully, no one cared what he said and instead focused on the ghost type. The curtain closed and Lana jogged into place, a hand on his little microphone while the Froslass took to center stage. [break][break]

The music began to play, and the Froslass would move her little arms outwards to the beat of the bells. Every movement staged in time with the beat created. For a moment it’s just her and the music and then the music began to swell. The tips of Yukina’s hand glowed gently, and the temperature began to drop. Lana’s breath is more and more apparent as she continued along. Fog crept at people’s feet and seemed to circle around the ghost. It almost looked like a dance for two. [break][break]

She slowed down, almost as if distracted before there’s another burst of music. The mist twists in her wake, bits of ice begin to fall. Lana wracks his brain for something, anything. Especially when the performance is coming to an end. “Beware in y-your travels. Beware of her calls. Beware the mist hides the falls. For a lady like her, is as fickle as the gods that cursed her. Should you see a figure in the mists, in the snow, stay away.” Was that good enough? Yukina doesn’t react too busy doing her best to match the music as HAIL began to pound the stage once more. He’s not sure how he felt about the performance, but its one she’d wanted to put on and by the gods, he’d support her through it. [break][break]

Jynx was cookin' up a real doozy for next round, so she hid in her changing room behind a Protect curtain like she was Houdini about to pull off a grand escape. She was definitely going to pull something off.

Tiny pink hearts oozed from beneath the Protect shield like centipedes escaping a rotten tree stump. They wiggled and scuttled their way to the edges of the stage as if someone had poured a bag of Skittles onto the wooden floor behind the barrier, rolling over one another in a slow, relentless stream. Then there was a puff of pink smoke (or was it blush?) from behind the glittering wall. What was actually happening in there?

Something was clearly going on. Or was it coming off?

After building up a repertoire many are undone by the acts of the competitors, remind everyone present of one of coordinating's fundamental rules: Turnabout is fair play. Judges are forced to brandish harsh criticisms and admonish their contestants who refused to perform for the round, but the contest is otherwise right on schedule.[break][break]

"It's been a rocky ride for every involved here tonight, hasn't it?! Surely our contestants have seen enough by now to know it's hardly over yet, though! It's just like they say: It isn't over until the fat lady sings," Adrian calls out into the night to a raving crowd, riling them up before the big finale. Even as the words leave his mouth he cannot help worrying over what contestant Chryssa & Jynx have in store for them as the curtains close, and the live footage of the contest fades away for a brief commercial break.[break][break]

THE BEST FOR LAST: As you should have already read in the sign-ups, I reserved the right to award BONUS APPEAL based on one's PRESENTATION, which boiled down to whether they used resources well (templates, songs, images, format, etc.) to deliver an awesome experience for me, the Judge. I limited it to one point per round and gave some away on a very generous basis. THAT CHANGES NOW! I will now be increasingly more critical of how they are used and not simply use their mere presence as a basis for awarding the points, and I will be awarding more of them for every facet of a post. This is extremely ARBITRARY but is meant to allow the chance for participants to breakthrough the mechanical learning curve with purely their skills as a forum roleplayer! I may also award certain players who hit all criteria with a special STAMP that will hopefully be able to used as a TIEBREAKER in that event![break]

Due to the nature of these contests generating more APPEAL POINTS than can usually be measured on the built-in meter, the actual meter will represent TWO (2) POINTS per heart, meaning you will need to earn two whole points for a heart meter to be lit up. At long last the fated finale was upon them. All good things must come to an end. Still, it’s been an absolute thrill and Lux, victorious or not, is determined to show off his beloved Meowstic in an unforgettable, beautiful way! [break][break]
All the previous applauses thus far ring persistently in his eardrums, clear as a ringing bell, a sound that guides him to their last spectacular move, one to leave them all impressed and speechless. It’s now or never! Time to pull all the stops![break][break]
Sweat glistens off Lux’s skin as a hand quickly swipes over his brow. His normally calm soul burns with mighty fire, exhilarated and ready to begin.[break][break]
“You’ve been splendid, Slateport! Magnifique!!” Lux announces aloud, his voice charged with electricity and energy. Meowstic trills in agreement, climbing and hopping atop his trainer’s arm it’s outstretched toward the crowd, the harsh heat of the spotlight shines on them both.[break][break]
“And I can think of no better way to end tonight then with the raw beauty of a meteor shower.” He turns to Meowstic, their matching smiles downright radiant. “Shall we?”[break][break]
On their mark, Meowstic springs in the air and opens their folded ears, unleashing a powerful display of Psyshock. Impressive doesn’t even begin to describe it. Like fireworks on New Year’s eve popping off into the night sky, multiple rays of illuminating pink race fervently against each other. Heat accumulates in the air as the audience’s fever increases. Reaching their highest peak flashing pink beams come crashing down, loud bangs begin to reverberate throughout the stadium shortly after.[break][break]

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Rays of magenta collide into one another, a collusion of utmost beauty one could create artificially in the span of seconds. Sparkles rain down on the people, adults and children alike rushing to grab hold of their own personal piece of the universe. While It may melt in their hands, the memory shall remain forever alive in their hearts.[break][break]
And at the very center of it all lies Meowstic, crashing back down to earth like a shooting star. Although Sirius cannot just rain down on the people, the next best thing is within reach.[break][break]
Lux grins, opens his arms wide as Sirius aims straight for him. The feline squeals the whole way down, landing into his partner’s arms as they wholly embrace. [break][break]
Their noses bump together as they giggle in unison. A job well done![break][break]

The curtains fluttered like breath, like tissue paper veiling whispers. The outpouring of unsettling pink hearts had abated, and the audience now waited with bated breath for everyone's favorite Jynx sweetheart: Oona!

A second curtain was being wheeled out from behind the first-- this one small, hula-hoop-sized, more like the type of changing room a magician's assistant used. Its wheels squeaked as it rolled before it stopped at center stage. Someone pressed play on the musical soundtrack.

The audience waited again for the curtain to fall.
[break][break]
Instead, Jynx's feet popped up over the top of the curtain. They were purple and eerily human-like, but more notable was the fact that both of them were in costume. She and Chryssa (allegedly) had been hard at work stenciling their opponents' likenesses onto a set of (overly literal) sock puppets, which Jynx did her best to make caper back and forth to the delightful yodeling soundtrack from the international musical classic, "The Sound of Meowstic." Of course, despite many theories to the contrary, Oona only had two usable feet at a time, so she was hard at work with costume changes and temporary hand sock-puppet placeholders.

Beautiful as the sock-puppet-foot-show was, however, it wasn't the main objective of their performance. With each meander of every marionette, an intense Z-POWER was gathering above. Greenery budded on the ceiling, growing down, down, extending furls and tendrils towards the heart of the stage. As the yodeling reached its peak, audience members began to point and whisper, recognizing the plant as mistletoe.

As the baby goat impersonators finished bleating in the finale, Oona moved with the elegance of a synchronized swimmer, thrusting one foot into the air (this one was decorated like kyle lopez). Her toes glowed with the light of ultra wormholes, then abruptly fired a series of missiles one after another, starting from her pinky toe. BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM! Last of all, her big toe fired its HYPER BEAM in a blast of searing light that sizzled past the stagelights and exploded in a grandiose firework above. BOOM!

Confident she'd successfully put her best foot forward, Oona wheeled herself backstage again before the emotional crowd could fall upon her and plant their adoring kisses upon her luscious lips. No, really. They'd just have to settle for the next best thing (Georgette?)

Voice of the Forest

A hazy green light inundates the stage as the curtain rises, a yellow-tinted spotlight highlighting the small Swablu at its centre - this time, neither Lugia nor Ho-Oh are to be seen, instead, a soft mint paints the pokemon, with deeper highlights of sage and celadon: Celebi is expertly costumed for the performance. The scent of damp wood washes over the audience as confetti from above languidly falls around the Swablu like the first drops of a live-giving rain.

His movements slow at first, the Swablu spreads his cloudy wings, releasing a trail of shimmering glitter as he takes to the sky.

A dreamy melody crests with the Swablu's movements, and as he glides with a gaining presence across the stage, his dips and whirls uncover patches of greenery newly revealed from their coverings of damp soot; new life burgeons where the Celebi-styled pokemon deigns to touch, a lush verdancy blooms within the rain-soaked forest ravaged by fire.

His movements becoming slower and slower, it finally seems the work of the little Swablu has become too much for him, and he condescends to the earth below. Reflecting over his labours surrounding him of paper-mache vines, beautiful tissue-paper flowers of every conceivable colour, and sprouts of growth resembling new trees, an air of contentedness radiates from the little pokemon.

Tipping his head back, a wistful PERISH SONG accompanies the music, and as the song crescendos and fades, Etienne tucks his head under one wing and the stagelights lower until naught but shadow consumes the scene.

All is quiet.

Mars stands alone at the centre of the stage, confident as ever. ”Our world is made of beautiful things that eventually fade away. Some sooner, some later. Some unforgettable, and some we dismiss easily... This isn’t a tale about grieving for lost beauty. It’s about cherishing all beautiful things in the world we live in!”

On cue, the Luxury Ball is thrown, a new seal breaking into an explosion of pink petals from which Erato appears.

Her serpentine body curls up elegantly, MARVEL SCALES shimmering under the lights of the stage.

A melodious cry answers Mars’ call, and it’s effortlessly that the Milotic rises from the stage. Just barely at first, slithering graceful circles around the perimeter...

But, when the music picks up a few seconds later, so does her; reaching the centre of the stage and heading for the firmament. Erato spins, and with every turn, it’s as if the wind itself is drawn by her every scale – a breeze rising around her in what almost begins to look like a glorious tornado in the making.

The winds pick up the scattered petals, and they too spin around her – the cold air freezing them to accompany frozen fractals that fill these currents. Winter. Frozen Spring.
[break][break]
Rain Dance, Weather Ball, Hail, and now…
[break][break]
The moment Erato reaches the highest point of the contest hall, she lets out another ethereal call, and when she does, the winds are released from her grasp, dispersing the frost that fills them in a gale that freezes everything in range, getting so very close to the audience and judges.

And yet, in the end, the ice bursts into flurry, and it's snowflakes that fall once again...

It's the beauty of water.

The stage is set with a simple spotlight as Luka and Clefable make their final entrance. The moon princess appears pensive and reserved, and Luka narrates the ending of their tale with a dreamlike wistfulness.[break][break]

"Although our lovely Princess has found herself a home upon the earth, she knows in her heart that she belongs with the moon and stars above. Her time with usis but a treasured, fleeting moment until she's called back to the heavens."[break][break]

Harps and violins echo with a beautiful melancholy, a fairy song that calls to Cupcake as she tiptoes across the stage. Lights dim until she is all that is in focus, the star-sent bathed in moonlight as she fails to resist its siren call. The audience can feel her sorrow as she's torn away from the earth, but she accepts it with a regal grace.[break][break]

To echo her previous song and dance, the Clefable now waltzes under the moon and stars. But now, she is alone. Slowly she ascends, hovering in midair as she floats ethereally upon nothing, carried up into the rising moon.[break][break]

Though she maintains a regal grace, the audience can see her sparkling tears follow her as she laments the loss of her life upon the earth.[break][break]

"There is beauty in all things, but love and friendship most of all. The moon and stars, saw that she was willing to give up everything to return to them. And they in turn decided to lend her their power, so she might come and go between heaven and earth as she pleased."[break][break]

A joyous Clefable lets out her bell-like call, summoning all the power of the heavens to her. Z-power gives her pearlescent skin an even brighter shine. She glitters like the stars themselves and gathers the very image of the moon upon one finger, creating a breathtaking illusion that bursts at breakneck speed upon the stage in a shower of diamonds.[break][break]

It's as though all her joy and happiness has healed the hearts of the crowd, so moved by her journey. And another delighted cry rings out as Cupcake soars gracefully into Luka's arms, the two reunited once again.[break][break]

August tried to stop the shaking in his hands. He hadn't been too nervous before, but missing his chance last round was a super effective hit to his confidence. Regardless, he had to see this through to the end; he wanted Felix to be proud of him for sticking to it. He'd have to change his plan if he wanted any chance of placing. He picked up Fish and buried his face in the pokemon's fur.

"We've gotta make this our all or nothing moment. We should do our riskiest routine. What do ya think?" he mumbled. His growlithe responded with a happy yip and lick on his cheek.

He had stage was set with hoops of varying heights; an agility course that ended on a platform on the center stage. August heard the crowd cheering encouragement as his name was called for the final round. "Let's do this." He ventured once more into the breach.

The stage was lit with a series of spotlights creating a strong contrast on stage. This time he had no introductory words. He settled his bow to his violin.

As he began playing his intense theme, Fish began leaping and tumbling through hoops. Slow at first, but growing in speed alongside the tempo of his accompaniment. His white fluff curled through the air as he completed flips and tricks, all the while beginning to glow with the energy he was building up until he finally landed on the platform.

The music met it's apex and Fish released a grand OVERHEAT, filling the auditorium with bright orange and red, warming the audience with it's sheer magnitude and presence. Fish showcased a few more tricks as the fire began to fall, and as the music began to slow, ash rained lazily down and covered the stage like snow.

When August Gallagher and his partner don’t perform, he’s concerned but Yukina doesn’t let him dwell over even try to find the young coordinator. Her ice-cold hands clamp around his face staring intensely into his eyes. “Y-You got me; I’m running out of stories.” He hissed back before yanked his hair hissing and shrieking in the privacy of backstage. “Just- ok! Ok! Ok! Yukina just- showstop ‘em” he said tugging the little ghost off him. [break][break]

The lights dim low and take on a shade of blue. From both sides of the stage an eerie fog rolls in. A spine-tingling chill ran down the spine of every person in the audience. The only sound is wind. Center stage, Yukina moved forward, floating idly. Lana took his position directly behind her further back, his voice still audible through the speakers. “Those who encounter her, consider yourselves forsaken. F-for she is beautiful as she is deadly.” An ominous bell rang out, music layering over the wind. [break][break]

He stepped forward, face hidden by a hood, and the ghost’s eyes snap open, glowing an intense yellow to the crowd. She turned her head towards Lana, and the music grew intense and panicked, mirrored by the narrator himself. [break][break]

The winds pick up for real this time, cold energy swirling around Yukina’s form. The glow in her eyes is still ominous as it shifted to blue. Bits of ice and snow began whipping around the stage, concentrated on the pair. Lana kept his eyes squeezed shut as he tried to step back and escape, but the BLIZZARD Yukina commanded only seemed to force him deeper into the eye of the storm. His reckoning upon him. As Lana pleaded for his life, his voice trembled, trapped in the very fate he had tried to warn the audience about. Forced to his knees he continued as the music softened and familiar bells rhythmically rang out, “You can try to a-appeal to her e-empathy, humanity, but in the end…” A particularly violent gust blew him back, sending him skidding backwards some distance, while the Froslass closed in as the music reached its finale. “That’s long gone.” The storm dies out, she raised Lana up. “You will find you have joi̷n̵e̶d̷ ̵h̸e̸r̸,̵ ̴i̴n̵ ̷t̵h̴e̵ ̶e̶n̸d̸.̶” His voice grew warped. He opened his eyes staring at the audience with haunting, glowing red eyes. [break][break]
