With the way Josh had snapped at Matt earlier, Julia was a bit worried about the Gym Leader's reaction to this impromptu race. His encouragement was a welcoming sight.

[break][break]Julia was very tempted to take Isaac up on his little taunt. So was Chester, if his right head's competitive look was anything to go by. But Julia reined him in, keeping his pace brisk to stay in step with Josh and Saber. Their conversation wasn't quite done yet, and Julia didn't want to just bail. Not yet, at least.

[break][break]"Looks like you've got it covered!" she shouted back to Isaac. Chester's right head warked his displeasure. "Easy there, buddy. We'll get our chance."

[break][break]Josh oh-so-helpfully reminded her that, as a Ranger, there was no such thing as being too prepared. "Hey, who's the senior Ranger here?" Julia asked mostly lightheartedly. "Trust me, I know the importance of being prepared." Josh may have noticed just a bit of bite behind her question... yet it was gone in an instant: "Sounds good! It'll be good for Ranger work to learn to ride that fast on the water, too." After all, Josh had proven that during their oceanic mission.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Both Julia and Josh opted out of the race, instead lingering behind and sending Isaac some cheer. Isaac was half floating in midair, half glued to Blinky's back by static electricity. Outside of slight leg squeezes to indicate turns and the single, jittery thumbs up he flashed to everyone, he could barely even move. It was great.[break][break]

Their Pokemon were far more competitive than they were. To Matt and Isaac, this really was just a good time. Once they got their needs for speeds out of their system, they eased down to only keep a little ahead of the rest of the pack. Who won? . . . Well, if you asked either, they'd probably say they were the one who won. But no one would know the truth to this story, especially when there were was less an end goal and more a whole lot of looping.[break][break]

At Matt's question, Isaac laughed a little. "What can I say? Guy's got infectious enthusiasm," he said. "Can't say racing was ever, like. My Thing thing. But going fast's always been pretty fun, and when you spend as much time on the open road as I do, you kinda get a fondness for seeing it all whizz by. I dunno if I'll ever make anything big of it, but so long as people I like spending time with are giving it a shot I sure as heck won't turn it down."[break][break]

Ignoring that bit of foreshadowing, Isaac couldn't help but watch the skies. It was starting to get surprisingly dark out. Just how long had they spent racing around, shooting the shit, and seeing what Josh's new gym was like? It was a great day. But all days had to end so that other ones could begin.[break][break]

The group'd be going their separate ways soon. And then it would be time for a very fateful bathroom break.

Was this what it was like from a challenger's perspective when Josh used his Jolteon in race challenges? Nana and Blinky, along with their riders, shot down the concourse at almost invisible speeds. He wanted to say something to the two of them, but they were already gone, looking like living comets as they were surrounded in reds and yellows. He turned the conversation back to Julia, expecting to meet the two back at the entrance when they returned.

"We'll see about that!" Josh returned. "I'm going to be trying out for my blue uniform and badge as soon as I can!" Of course, he had to get through his probationary period, then work (mostly) from Square One of his current rank. Plus, Elite Rangers were generally tasked with supervisory duties on missions. Leadership positions, as Josh had found out from being in the Gym Leader program, were a whole different beast, even being familiar with the with that subordinates did.

Though it took a while to catch up, Josh and Saber met the others after completing a full lap around the concourse. "Well, that's it for now. Depending on how much demand there is and how quickly we expand, I may add a new course or two from time to time. Oh, and Matt and Julia, even though I can't give you another Badge, you're welcome to schedule another race with me if you want." With that, he guided the three back to the gate he let them in through. The sun was about to set, and he needed to get that gate locked before the sky became completely black.
