Gideon sat beside his brother in an unassuming cemetery on the outskirts of Fallarbor Town.

His hair was uncharacteristically messy this evening. Not styled, billowing in the strong autumnal breeze. Contact lenses had been forwent for simple square-rimmed glasses. There was no need for pristine appearances here, after all.

Not at the resting place of their paternal grandparents.

"... How long has it been now?" He asked Gunner Graves, trying to think back to the last memory of them all together.

The granite bench upon which they sat, nestled beside their family's headstones, had long since lost its luster. Instead, lichen had largely overtaken the stony façade, obscuring the name chiseled across its front.

Gunner sat leaning forward, his elbows on his knees, his fingers laced together in front of him. He scanned the cemetery casually, though his trained eyes picked up every detail and movement. No one would disturb them there, however. Fallarbor was too out of the way from everything going on in the region, the graveyard itself even moreso.[break][break]

"Too long," he told his brother, his voice low, quiet. "Maybe… eight months?"[break][break]

Though Gunner visited their parents more than Gideon did, his busy schedule prevented him from spending more than a couple hours at a time in their childhood home — enough to catch up over a leisurely dinner, but not for much else. The headstones' disrepair showed such neglect plainly.[break][break]

"Do you remember when we were kids, and we would hide up here sometimes?" Gunner asked suddenly, his gaze settling upon the derelict markers. The resurfacing memory was hazy, many details long faded. "Granddad had to come up and find us, and Grandma would smack us with her slipper when we got back?"[break][break]

He smiled. Their grandmother never hit them very hard, and only on their bottoms, but it nevertheless made their mother so mad.

Gunner's words evoked a long-forgotten moment in time from the depths of Gideon's subconscious. The memory drew a small smile onto his face.

"I do." He replied lowly, leaning back and balling his hands in his lap.

"Those were simpler times." Before he'd loved and then lost. Before the bitter divorce. Before the burden of responsibility weighed so heavy on his shoulders.

When he could just run free with his brother, causing juvenile mischief in the hills of Fallarbor.

"Grandma was quite the spitfire, wasn't she? I was always surprised she passed on before Grandad." When that happened it was as if the light had left the old man's world. He didn't linger much longer after his wife's death.

At the time, Gideon had been distraught to lose them both in such quick succession.

Now it just seemed merciful in a way.

A heavy sigh escaped Gunner. "Simpler times, indeed."[break][break]

When did they become so busy? Was it during high school, when they spent hours studying and taking practice exams just so they could go to the universities of their parents' dreams? Was it later, when they had both graduated with Bachelor's degrees yet sought even greater heights?[break][break]

"I wonder if there's truth to the saying that the fires that burn brightest are the quickest to burn out."[break][break]

He thought of Sayori then — of her firecracker personality and the brightness of her smile that outshone the sun. Five years had passed since the harrowing phone call and the bomb that took her life, but there were days the wound still felt fresh and raw.[break][break]

Gunner had once thought he would live a life like his grandparents. Married for decades, surrounded by children and grandchildren, dying together at home.[break][break]

Now, though, he wasn't sure such dreams were meant for men like him.

"Haaa.." A rough sigh left parted lips. Gideon didn't move to face his brother; instead, his eyes were cast upward, where he appraised a handful of stars that had appeared in the evening sky. "Don't go getting all philosophical on me now."

A deflecting comment, offering no confirmation or denial. Perhaps Gideon felt himself implicated in the old saying and didn't want to delve too deeply on how it could apply. He instinctively shied away from even the possibility of critique.

Burnout was his enemy, after all. And by his own estimation his fire burned brighter than most.

Lichen-covered headstones spoke of his shortcomings, though, and of a family ill-attended in favor of a prestigious career.

The admonishment caused the corner of Gunner's mouth to tug upward in a half-hearted smile. Gideon's flame had always burned brighter than Gunner's own, though perhaps that was only how it seemed on the surface. After all, the elder Graves was not alone in his neglect of their family plot.[break][break]

Gunner stood from the bench and walked over to the headstones. With his hands, he started to tear at the moss and lichen that covered their grandfather's marker. Despite the effort, however, much of the growth and dirt stubbornly remained.[break][break]

Admittedly, he knew nothing about cleaning graves. But at that moment, it felt wrong to just leave for their parents' house without doing something for their grandparents first.[break][break]

"We should come back soon with proper tools to clean these up," Gunner suggested without looking over at Gideon. "Brushes and water and stuff."

Gideon watched as his brother rose from their familial bench, but did not immediately follow. He guessed what Gunner’s next action would be and it was a speculation that turned out to be correct. The younger Graves made to clean one of the headstones yet, despite the caring sentiment, found it ultimately futile. There was no way to remove the built-up algae, dirt, and fungus with bare hands.

“We should.” Gideon finally stood to join his brother, brushing off his pants as he did so. They needed to clean the bench, too.

“We will.” He amended, placing a hand on Gunner’s shoulder. “It’s the least we can do for them.”

Gunner nodded. There was little other response that sufficed. Besides, they had to leave soon if they were going to make it to their parents' house in time for dinner.[break][break]

"Sorry, Granddad, Grandma," the younger Graves murmured to the headstones. Idly, he brushed at some loosened moss with one hand. "We'll do better."[break][break]

Stepping away, Gunner returned to the path leading out of the cemetery. He wiped his hands on his pants and looked in the direction of Fallarbor Town.[break][break]

"What do you think Dad's cooking for dinner tonight?" he asked Gideon, trying to change the conversation to a lighter topic. "It's been a while since they've seen you, so probably one of your favorites?" he suggested.

It wasn’t so much a sigh that left Gideon’s lips as a heavy breath. A deep inhale, a cleansing exhale. He laid a hand on his grandfather’s tombstone, leaving it there for a quiet moment as he said his silent goodbyes. No vocal apologies from the elder Graves brother; a mournful look would have to suffice.

Then he turned away, following after Gunner Graves, his boots crunching under the gravel path leading to the cemetery entrance.

“Knowing Dad, probably some sort of grilled fish.” Gideon’s favorite food, but also his father’s - a mutual preference stemming from their shared hobby of creating fly fishing lures. “He was talking earlier about how much he wanted to fire up his new grill.”
