[attr="class","skulloverlap"]BUT HOLD YOUR BREATH, GUESS WHO'S RUNNING THE SHOW?

[attr="class","skullbody"]A Z-Move!? This close to the crowds!? Had Josh gone mad!?[break][break]

Yes. Yes he had. And for a second, the roles were reversed. Josh had been the one not lifting a single finger, far too focused on saving something important to him to even consider fighting back. Isaac had been in a maddened frenzy, his world falling apart around him. He pushed, onward and onward, so desperate for things to make sense again that he was ready to force the issue with his own two hands. And he stopped at nothing to achieve that end, right down to launching a Z-Move with no concern for the devastation he'd caused.[break][break]

He was looking into a mirror right now. His sins were playing out right in front of him, a painful reminder of the worst night of his life. They played out through the visage of the one hurt most deeply by it, to the point where he had succumbed to the very same lows. The scenes were etched out in scars, the script had been written in blood. And he only had himself to blame.[break][break]

Isaac did not fly up. He did not fly away. He didn't even charge towards Josh. Instead, he guided a confused Sunny right back down to the ground. For all his past mistakes, his intentions through this protest had been honest. He wasn't here to be Rocket's sword. He was here to be the peoples' shield. For Jack Pile, dead before his time. For the protestors, gathered to send a message only to end up in a fight for their lives. For Julia, whose ice-cold voice in the face of his tsundere dismissal and Josh's misaimed rage was heartbreaking.[break][break]

And for Josh, who he had failed harder than anyone. He'd protect them all, even if it killed him.[break][break]

His determination burned hot. His hand burned hotter.[break][break]

His hands moved on their own. They slammed together, bringing the blades of Luck & Pluck together in the process. A white light spilled across their bodies as they pressed closer, closer, closer still, until the two had practically become one. Their length more than doubled. Their width and sturdiness increased dramatically. As light of evolution exploded off of its body, its blood-red blade began to fade, settling to steel tempered hard enough to turn black. Its edge, crimson and jagged, sparkled in the sunlight before plunging back into the earth.[break][break]

With Josh's defiant roar, the sheathes adhered to Isaac's back rocketed from their holsters. They, too, were overtaken by the light of evolution, fragments swirling around one another and interlocking into a rounder, less cumbersome configuration. It wouldn't be an aimless blade rising to meet this Z-Move. It would be the King's Shield.[break][break]

Yet what was a king without its subjects? Before Isaac even realized what was going on, four more glimmering shields formed in the air around him. Reflected in the shining metal, he could see Vivi, Ivan, and their daughter Joy. The triad of Eeveelutions had shuffled to the front of the crowd, Copycatting the King's Shield to ensure that Luck & Pluck didn't need to stand alone. They were joined by Nemesis, the reclusive Mimikyu paying back a favor to the one that had taken her in with a Copycat of her own. A slab of jagged rock rose up to unite with the shield wall, Caesar's yips as unmistakable as his Spiky Shield was.[break][break]

They were the first into the fray, but as the Emperor's Royal Roar collided with the shield wall, they would be far from the last. Crash and the Boys squirmed into gaps in the shield wall from below, declaring No Retreat to bolster their defenses. Sectonia's Defend Order filled it in from above, Combee drones assembling into a hexagonal wall. Jerry swirled out to the crowd's right, while Flapjack gracefully crested to their left. If anything got past the shield wall, their Mirror Coats would bounce any excess energy skyward instead of letting it wash over the crowd.[break][break]

Even those who couldn't lend their aid through techniques brought their bulk to the table. Shiver unfurled into a wall of fish, an Aqua Ring surrounding her to help her push through the pain. Larger and sturdier Pokemon like the Galarian fossils and Ceres stood tall before the feebler ones. Sanford launched itself towards Isaac, firing an Anchor Shot to the ground to keep him steadied even in the face of the inevitable. Even Kurze, standing off to the sidelines, found himself spurred to move. He cast his Disguise off, giving it a swirl of momentum before flinging it towards Isaac for support.[break][break]

Yet despite his - no, everyone's - best efforts, the Roar was mighty indeed. Even as Sectonia's drones flooded the gaps in the shield wall, the pure force of the sound was reducing them to mulch as quickly as they could appear. Crash and the Boys were sent flying one by one, no matter how hard they dug their little feet in. Jerry and Flapjack started to waver as excess noise spilled from the edges of the shield wall, raining on their bodies like a barrage of blows. Caesar's wall of stone was reduced to rubble. The imitation Shields of the Eeveelutions and Nemesis were fading in and out of reality. The roar was taking a turn for the inevitable.[break][break]

Zaius and Isaac had never seen eye to eye. The Oranguru was, in all honesty, a better Rocket than Isaac was. Yet even he found himself lifting a finger to help. Maybe he was moved by the boy's warrior spirit. Maybe he'd be damned if he let his trainer lose to a gym leader. Maybe he saw a propaganda opportunity in this for Rocket. His reasons were inscrutable, but his assistance wasn't. With daggers glared into the back of his head, he Instructed Isaac to give this one last go and make it count.[break][break]

Isaac took the grounded Luck & Pluck in one hand. He slipped his wrist into the King's Shield with the other. And then, his own yell of exertion muffled by the echoes of Josh's roar, he pushed forward with all of his might. Luck & Pluck began to glow once more, turning first white, then shimmering with every color of the rainbow. The glow started to spread, first up Isaac's arms, then into the King's Shield. Zaius' Instruct gave him the initiative to move, and Luck & Pluck's power gave him the energy to stand tall. The next part was all up to Isaac.[break][break]

Aegis Ignition.[break][break]

With that thought, Luck & Pluck's Z-Power flooded into the King's Shield. It expanded in a burst of rainbow light, large enough to catch the blow, large enough to weather its force, large enough to protect everyone. Sunny pushed forward with a Tailwind, lending a burst of momentum to this clash between two Z-Moves. He beat his wings with all of his might, hoping against hope that they could weather the storm.[break][break]

That wouldn't enough to dissolve the move. But it was the last push Isaac needed. The force of the Z-Move caused the Aegis Ignition to flash. Once. Twice. Three times. That was his cue. He thrust his arm up, and with it guided the shimmering shield in an arc as if it were a rainbow. Once it was at the apex of its curve, the rainbow light shattered, a detonation strong enough to redirect Josh's Z-Move up and over Isaac. Even as it trailed into the sky, high above the crowd, it never lost its defiance for a moment.[break][break]

It was funny. Isaac had loaned the crowd his Pokemon in the first place so that he could protect them. Now here they stood, battered, bruised, and weary, but protecting him instead. Maybe he was right. Maybe he didn't need to come here, after all. His Pokemon were more than capable of the task, and as they joined the protestors in a weak, weary cheer, Isaac knew they could fill that role for as long as he needed them to. His heart swelled in a mixture of pride and adoration. Everything was going to be okay.[break][break]

But there was one step left to handle. There was one person left to save.[break][break]

Both he and Josh were too scarred, too tainted, too broken by their struggles to be a symbol today. Not for the protestors. Not for the crowd. No, that symbol was currently breaking into a run, a living bridge that could put an end to this once and for all. They were right. "This" didn't concern Julia. Something far bigger than them, something far better than them needed her attention more. Isaac could leave this in her capable hands. And that meant he could give this final matter his full attention.[break][break]

He turned to Josh, a cocky grin spreading across his face. Josh didn't need to know that it had taken everything Isaac was capable of and more to fend that move off. All he needed to know was three things. A) His enemy barely had a scratch on him, even in the face of his mightiest technique. B) It was all because he had cheated. And C) He was going to respond to it in that same, frustratingly smarmy way he always did. With a hand cupped to his ear, Isaac shot Josh That Smirk.[break][break]

"Sorry, could you repeat that? I didn't quite hear you."[break][break]

He spurred Sunny along, drawing Luck & Pluck from the ground like the sword in the stone. The Crobat shrieked lack a bat out of hell, charging forward as if to swoop right at Josh. However, he would pull up at the last minute. With a twist of his legs, Isaac guided the ascending bat into a curve right over Josh's head. He wasn't heading towards the protestors. He wasn't heading towards the officers. No, his destination was the city's outskirts. There wasn't going to be any more collateral damage, any more people put in harm's way. Not this time. Not after the scar he had already given this place.[break][break]

Rather than face forward, he turned to look back at the situation fading in the distance. The distance Julia needed to run seemed to grow by the minute, an ever-expanding chasm between two shattered worlds. Isaac had no idea how much time there would be to fix everything, both tonight and for the rest of their lives. If Julia wanted to resolve things before they got ugly again, she might need some serious speed on her side.[break][break]

Perhaps she'd hear first an impatient snort, then a loud bellow, and finally the sound of rapid hoofbeats on pavement. If she needed speed on her side, who better than the Silph Cup champion himself, Buffaloman? Watson sat atop his head, holding onto his curved horns for dear life as the shiny Tauros stampeded out of the crowd. Upon seeing Julia, he pointed, rasping a few times in acknowledgment. The Tauros nodded, slowing its pace to match Julia's sprinting speed.[break][break]

The message was loud and clear; let's ride.[break][break]

As she gradually parted from the crowd, the protestors murmured among themselves. One tried to start up a refrain that she'd ditched and betrayed them, but was shushed by several others. "See? Look, she's got us," another said gesturing to Snaily. With Isaac's non-ghost defenders worn down to their limits, the Goodra standing tall served a powerful symbol in her own right. Others helped ease Chester into the group, ensuring that the Dodrio was sprayed down with some Paralyze Heal and safely surrounded by the crowd. A good handful still kept their distance, hesitant on trusting a Ranger, but it seemed Julia had made a sterling impression today.[break][break]

Whether Buffaloman and Watson ferried her to her destination in style, or simply served as escorts, Julia wouldn't find much resistance on her way to the exhausted officers. If she was fast asleep before, the Emperor's Noble Roar would make her quite easy for Julia to rouse. "Ma, c'mon, five more minute- . . . huh? You're not . . . ah, jeez." Blushing a little, the officer shakily snapped to her feet. "I'm at attention! Honest!"[break][break]

Julia wasn't the only one tending to the lost and the listless. Behind protestor lines, Echo waddled through the crowds. Starting from the back and making his way to the front, he'd toddle up to a protestor, give them a boop, and disappear with them in tow. After teleporting back, he'd move on to the next one down the line, sending them away with a smile and a wave. Some were all smiles, willing to take this stalemate as a triumph. Others bristled, Echo yoinking them away as they complained about wanting to teach the officers another lesson or two. However, the majority let out weary sighs, simply glad that this was finally over.[break][break]

The officers were in good hands. The protestors were in good hands. Isaac could only hope his would be good enough for Josh.[break][break]

It took the combined efforts of all of Isaac's Pokémon to meet the might of Aslan's booming voice that gave even legendary Pokémon pause. It took many, many KING'S SHIELDs that could have shattered at any moment from the roar so loud it could be heard throughout the entire city. Even the stage itself was not immune to the tremendous damage; the ramp and staircase leading up to center stage splintered. While EMPEROR'S ROYAL ROAR did not have the raw power many Z-Moves did, it was still a discharge of INFINITY ENERGY, well above and beyond the already violent discharges of ordinary Pokémon attacks. Isaac's Pokémon, one by one, repelled the attack.

Not even Josh was immune to the havoc Aslan unleashed. While he was safe from the shockwave itself, he failed to foresee a secondary source of might from the roar. While the Pyroar was screaming his lungs out, his entire body was vibrating with the speed and power of a colossal rattlesnake's tail. It was so fast that observers would have been able to hear a low hum if the noise of the roar wasn't drowning it out. Josh's vision quickly faded to an incomprehensible sea of color, his sense of touch leaving him in about as much time. He could neither see nor feel himself falling out of Aslan's saddle; it was a good thing he landed on his left side and not his head!

Quite some time later, Josh awoke to a taunting Isaac's words of "I didn't quite hear you." When he briefly lost consciousness after being deprived of three of his senses, the last thing he remembered was a wall of KING'S SHIELDs and MIRROR COATs deflecting the Z-Move. Why was he still alive, then? In his senseless, mindless rage, the Mauville Leader had directed his Manectric to paralyze Isaac with his THUNDER WAVE, so he could not escape the EMPEROR'S ROYAL ROAR discharged directly at him with obvious murderous intent. The "assassin" and his team had obviously deflected the attack. If they were able to deflect it at all, it would have been trivial for them to deflect it back at him. That would have been the end of Josh Devlin, his insides bursting from a shockwave that made a Flygon's BOOMBURST sound like a firecracker by comparison. And yet, he didn't.

He chose to spare Josh's life a third time. Did he really have Blackjack wrong?

No. He was clearly one to toy with his enemies prior to the curtain call. In what he assumed would be his dying breaths, the immobile Mauville Leader asked this smirking foe, his speech slurred, "Before you kill me, there is one piece of knowledge I want to take to my grave. Just...who are you?" At those words, Saber lunged toward Isaac in an effort to get between the two and protect his trainer who had, unlike his usual self, seemingly given up.

Despite the ear-piercing sound from the loudspeakers, Julia didn't feel the impact she expected from the echoes of the Z-Move. She gasped in awe when she opened her eyes and saw the Emperor's Royal Roar colliding with a wall of shields: King's Shield, Spiky Shield, Defend Order, No Retreat, even more unconventional shields made of Aqua Ring and Anchor Shot. Z-Power flowed into the newly evolved Aegislash's King Shield, which expanded in a beautiful burst of rainbow light. Blackjack raised his arm, guiding the shimmering shield upward until it shattered, sending Josh's defiant rage to the sky, where it couldn't hurt anyone.

[break][break]He could have just as easily redirected it to Josh himself and made him pay the price for his recklessness, but he didn't. The only thing he retaliated with was familiar snark. For a moment, it looked like he was going to charge at Josh, but he pulled up at the last moment and flew away from the Gym Leader and the protesters.

[break][break]As Julia ran toward the line of officers, she heard a snort, then a bellow, and finally hoofbeats pounding the pavement. A familiar shiny Tauros raced out of the crowd, an equally familiar Totodile holding onto his horns for dear life. "Buffaloman?" Julia asked. "Watson? What are you—Wait, is Isaac here? Where is he?" What would Isaac be doing here? Was he okay? Either way, Julia understood Buffaloman's clear message and hopped on his back, letting the Silph Cup Champion ferry her to the officers in style. She smiled gratefully at the protesters who cleared the way for her and helped Chester before he was recalled into his Poké Ball as she passed. Behind her, Snaily squeaked in alarm and waddled a few steps after her trainer, not nearly as fast as the Tauros. She hung around the edge of the crowd, looking back and forth anxiously between it and Julia. So much for being a powerful symbol.

[break][break]"It's okay," Julia said to the officer she'd awoken. "You all got Spored, and I was worried you were gonna get caught in the crossfire, but it looks like that's—" She did a double-take toward the stage when she saw Josh lying on his side. "Josh!" What had happened? As much as she wanted to run over there and find out, she still had work to do down here. She tossed out another Poké Ball. "Sparkie, can you go check on Josh?" The shiny Alolan Raichu looked a bit nervous about the crowd but nodded at Julia's request. She summoned Electric Terrain beneath her and used it to Surge Surf her way to the stage.

[break][break]With that taken care of, Julia turned her focus back to the officer. "I don't want anyone else to get hurt today," she said. "Two people have already died, one on each side. Is there any way we can break this up peacefully?"

[break][break]Huh... Was it just Julia, or were there way fewer protesters than there had been a few minutes ago?

[attr="class","skulloverlap"]BUT HOLD YOUR BREATH, GUESS WHO'S RUNNING THE SHOW?

[attr="class","skullbody"]Oh.[break][break]

He wasn't being followed.[break][break]

As always, Isaac thought too many steps ahead, following the script that he'd assumed life had written for him. This time, life wasn't in step with him. Josh had fallen from his saddle while Isaac bore the brunt of his Z-Move. Rather than get back on his steed as Isaac had expected, he laid there on the ground, dazed and disoriented from the force of his own attack.[break][break]

Isaac was lucky that he had a stacked deck to pull from. Had he not been able to meet that Z-Move on his own terms, he would have felt these effects ten times over.[break][break]

With the need for the chase over, Isaac tapped twice on Sunny's side. The Crobat flung out his auxiliary wings, skidding against its own air resistance to slow to a halt. To Josh, it must have looked like the specter of death looming above him, its shadow stretching long as it stared off into the setting sun.[break][break]

"Who am I?"[break][break]

Isaac started to laugh, but he couldn't muster up the will. His half-hearted chuckle melted out into a soft, rolling sigh. "C'mon. Isn't it obvious by now?" he asked. His voice hitched slightly as it tumbled over the question.[break][break]

He thought back to the events of today, how his mere presence took a situation that was already messy and risked escalating it into something far worse. Had it not been for all of the luck and pluck he could bring to bear, countless people could've ended up injured or even killed. Even the protection he provided them felt more like atonement than anything else.[break][break]

He thought back to Mauville Gym, the worst day of his life. If he hadn't tried to get clever with it, if he didn't keep trying to saddle the line between his heart and his obligations, if he stayed out of everyone's way like he should have, such a disaster would have never unfolded. The more he thought about it, the more the chains he was tethered to tightened around his neck.[break][break]

He thought back to the prison break, where he first encountered the man with which he'd be best of friends and worst of enemies. It was a mission where he expected shock and awe but instead found lethality, and had to make a snap judgment as to where he drew his line. His hand was starting to cramp from how long of a line he needed to draw, but he refused to let it falter. He wouldn't. He couldn't.[break][break]

He looked over his shoulder, finally facing Josh. There was no smile left on his face. There was no wit left in his voice. There was only the weariness of a man who realized that this would never end. "Just the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time."[break][break]

Breaking eye contact, he turned away from Josh. And then he raised a hand to the sky. The snap of his fingers echoed across the horizon. Then, across the horizon, came Echo. One moment, the airspace in front of Josh was clear. The next, a Ralts appeared above him, peppering the fallen Gym Leader with a few quick bursts of Life Dew. Once his work was done, he disappeared in a shimmering rift, waving from his new perch atop Isaac's shoulder.[break][break]

That would have been the time to fly away. A shame that, in mid flap, Sunny froze up. A familiar "chu" sound left him freezing up, only moving his wings enough to keep his airborne position. Slowly but surely, he turned around, just in time to see Sparkie rocketing towards the group.[break][break]

The Crobat blinked a few times. And then a soft blush spread across his face, covering his face in his forewings to try and hide it. Echo was the first to start laughing, a giddy giggle that left him kicking his feet in childish amusement. Luck & Pluck, of all Pokemon, followed suit, a deep, hearty rumble escaping the trembling blade. Bit by bit, pulled along by his Pokemon, Isaac found himself dragged not out of this situation but instead out of his dour mood. How could he not start laughing when they were being so ridiculous?[break][break]

"Okay, buddy," he said between snickers. Why were his Pokemon like this? And why did he love it so much? "We can teach you how to talk to girls some other time. But, c'mon. Time and place."[break][break]

It was only after he spoke that he realized he'd forgotten that put-upon gravel in his voice.[break][break]

Julia wouldn't be close enough to hear this little cue. Instead, she'd have access to a far more primary source. At her question, Watson let out a cheerful rasp, then turned to point right towards Isaac and Josh. He was hovering right there! Silly Julia![break][break]

Then he realized just why they were here, and his jaw dropped a little in surprise. Uh. Oops! He wasn't supposed to say that! He raised a claw to his chin, scratching it in contemplation, before shaking his head no. Sorry! He was mistaken! Watson was being a silly little dumdum again! As if to solidify this conclusion, he turned to Julia, raising his arms in an adorable little shrug.[break][break]

Hopefully she'd buy his nonsense. Especially when she had a far more important situation to sleuth out. "I wish I knew. Honestly, I'm surprised we have this much time to talk," the officer by Julia said. "Before we went down, they were really, really mad. Did they get knocked out by the Spores, too?"[break][break]

She peered past Julia, only to blink rapidly from surprise. Where there was once a crowd of protestors, there was now nothing but a small handful of Pokemon. ". . . Uh . . . I . . . guess? This means this is over? I think?" she said, clearly baffled by the sight. "How long was I out for, again?"

The voice behind the mask, no longer obscured by wit and possibly a face accent or voice-changing technology, made it obvious who it was. Josh had asked before he died to know the identity of his assassin. The brunt of that answer bore down on him more intensely than the threat of death itself. As it turned out, the identity of his thrice-attempted assassin...

...was one of his his best friends, .

Josh's jaw dropped as much as it could in his weakened state. The bitter revelation put him through more agony than being tackled by Raikou's EXTREME SPEED or being struck by his divine THUNDERBOLT. One of his best friends, the man whose life he had saved when the two rode Resheph together at ludicrous speeds, the man he had spent the day with at Round One in Mauville as a final chance to decompress before taking on his role as Mauville's Gym Leader, and whom he thought was a very loyal friend who would never betray him, had a hidden dark side.

Furthermore, it was irrefutable evidence that Isaac had committed a high crime that could easily result in capital punishment. It put him in a great moral dilemma: he was, by his duty as a Gym Leader, obligated to either turn Isaac in, or reveal Isaac's identity to the League so that they could crush the troubled Rocket with their full force as reparation for his heinous act. At the same time, though, Isaac was one of his best friends. Could Josh really sell him out to the League, after all they had done together under the guise of Isaac Merio and not Blackjack?

The young racer wanted to scream at the top of his lungs, but lacked the strength to do so. Instead, he pantomimed a scream as Isaac hovered over him. "You... you understand the impossible position this puts me in, don't you?" He took a moment to let his words sink into Isaac's mind. "We're the only ones that are fully aware now, but there is going to be a huge bounty on your head if the League finds out you were the one that caused all the trouble at my Gym. And if they get ahold of you, I can't see you getting anything less than the death penalty. Furthermore, if the League ever finds out I willingly let you go, I'm the one whose head is going to be rolling. Even after my almost assured imprisonment for knowingly aiding and abetting a high criminal, there is no way I'll ever be able to hold a League job again."

By now, Josh had been fully reduced to tears. "And yet...you, . Not the person you were on the motorcycle. Not the person you were at my Gym that day. The Isaac that enjoyed the view from an EXTREME SPEEDing Dragonair's back. The Isaac that I spent the day with at Round One to get my mind off the stress of becoming Mauville City's Gym Leader. That's the only Isaac I want to know. Not the one I saw at my Gym. The only Isaac I want to turn in is the one that was on that motorcycle. The one at my Gym. That's the only Isaac I want to see in League custody. Remember when we went camping together with and ? That's that Isaac I couldn't bear to see turned over to the League. That Isaac did nothing wrong. You... understand, don't you?"

The "Chu!" that Sunny heard was Sparkie calling out worriedly to Josh. She didn't even notice the way the Crobat was looking at her at first, focused instead on floating over to the fallen trainer. He didn't seem seriously injured, thank goodness, especially with the Life Dew to invigorate him. Still, she squeaked out a concerned query.

[break][break]The sounds of laughter finally drew her attention to what was above her. Sunny, now a Crobat, was covering his face bashfully. Sparkie's eyes widened when she saw the bright yellow swirls that shone on his body, and she let out a soft sound of wonder. Those were so pretty...

[break][break]And then Blackjack spoke in a voice that wasn't his yet was still familiar. Sparkie tilted her head, not quite understanding what this meant yet. Josh, however, understood immediately. Confusion and concern intermingled on Sparkie's face as she watched tears fall from the Gym Leader's eyes.

[break][break]Julia, meanwhile, eagerly followed Watson's point to find her friend. But... Where was he? All Julia saw were Josh and...

[break][break]Psh, there was no way. Julia turned back to Watson to see the Totodile with his jaw dropped a bit. He dramatically scratched his chin in thought before shaking his head and giving an adorable shrug with his little arms. Julia laughed, though the sound was void of her usual energy and enthusiasm. Silly Watson. Silly, Silly Watson. That wasn't Isaac; that was Blackjack! Those were two totally different people!

[break][break]Yeah. Yeah, there was no way they weren't. Isaac must have vanished with the rest of the protesters. Julia would ask him about it later.

[break][break]The officer asked if the protesters had been knocked out by the Spore, too. "A few of them, yeah," Julia said. "You weren't out that long, but..." She didn't know what the "but" was supposed to be. She could barely make room for the protesters' disappearance in her clogged-up thoughts, let alone anything else. She should have been relieved that, one way or another, it was over without anyone else getting hurt, but she just couldn't shake this strange feeling... at least not without a slimy hand on her shoulder snapping her out of it. She smiled back at Snaily and scratched the Goodra's head before recalling her into her Ball.

[break][break]"I'd better make sure Josh is okay," Julia said quickly. "Can you wake up the rest of the officers? Thanks!" Without even waiting for a response, she jogged back toward the stage. Sparkie hadn't called out or come rushing back to Julia, so Josh was probably okay. But she'd be a bad friend if she didn't check for herself, right?

[break][break]The sound of Julia's approaching footsteps made Sparkie's ears perk up, and she floated over to her trainer, still looking worried. Julia scooped Sparkie up in her arms, a feat made easier by the Raichu's telekinesis, and absently scratched behind her ear. Then she realized that Josh was talking. She moved closer and heard the name that felt more like a dagger in her ear in that moment: Isaac.

[break][break]"That... That can't be right," Julia said, a desperate smile crawling on her face. "Isaac's our friend. He's around here somewhere. Watson and Buffaloman are here, so he's gotta be!" She looked around, her grip tightening on Sparkie until the Raichu squeaked painfully. "Oh! Hehe, sorry, Sparkie."

[attr="class","skullbody"]That Isaac did nothing wrong.[break][break]

The way Josh spoke, he acted as if Isaac was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. There was a Good Isaac who had done nothing wrong, in his life, at all, ever. And then there was a Bad Isaac who was the baddest bad to ever bad and would be executed the second any League member saw him take a breath.[break][break]

It was such a myopic outlook. The idea that just because he cared for someone, they were sacrosanct. The idea that just because someone wronged him, heaven and earth should move to punish them. The world did not revolve around Josh Devlin and his quest. The world sure as shit revolve around Isaac, either. It would turn, impartial and unerring, until they wizened up and stepped in line. If they didn't, it'd grind them into a fine powder and keep on turning.[break][break]

People, even ones you loved and trusted, would let you down. People, even ones you loathed and feared, had their reasons for being the way they were. The further you zoomed in, the more you saw stories intertwine and lives collide, the more complicated the world became. Yet the further you zoomed out, the more those stories stopped mattering, becoming mere cogs in the machine. To a human being, their life was the most precious thing in existence. To the great monoliths of the League and Rocket, it was a resource at best and a statistic at most.[break][break]

"High criminal? Please. I'm some Rocket nobody that got into a scuffle with the baby of the gym leader bunch," Isaac said. "There are Rockets out there that make me look like a stuffed animal. The League would let a million mes slide just to get a chance at catching one of them. Don't you get it, man? In the grand scheme of things, we're nothing! We're some little sideshow in the shadows of forces far bigger than we could ever be."[break][break]

"How many times do I have to tell you this, man?" Even as his temper flared, he tried to force it back. The last time he tried to hurt Josh for his own good, things ended horrifically. "I need you to realize that. I need you to prepare yourself properly. Before it's too late."[break][break]

"You don't know what you're walking into. I didn't know before it was too late, either," he said, his rage and concern now underlined with shameful defeat. "This situation's bigger than any of us could ever guess. And now we're all it's prisoners. What you do, what I do, what you want, what I want . . . none of it matters. The League will do what it does. Rocket will do the same. And all we can do is find a place to survive in the eye of the storm."[break][break]

"I wish I could tell you how much I hated that."[break][break]

Fate was not a concept Isaac believed in. There wasn't some great, big, cosmic destiny guiding everyone along on a string. The reality was insidious, and far, far worse. It was a million little chains; bonds, obligations, responsibilities, happenstance, and the ripples from everyone in the world pulling on their own chains. Sometimes they braided together into an unbreakable rope. At other times they pulled in opposite directions, caring not for how painfully they joked their prisoner out.[break][break]

Isaac was not a man who liked to be chained. He roamed within his chains where he could, and even smashed them asunder whenever he caught a weak link. But what was one man supposed to do against the overwhelming tide of millions?[break][break]

"I do what I can with the hand I've been dealt. I didn't protect these people for Rocket. I did it so they'd never have to depend on Rocket." Had he failed, had the protest been scattered across the winds, had they sought asylum with Rocket to avoid the fate the League's retribution would damn them to . . . "It'll never be enough. But if I didn't try, how could I forgive myself? I'd be the monster you think I am. So I push against the current, no matter what it costs."[break][break]

Tears welled in his eyes, and yet he couldn't help but laugh. "Even when it leads to the worst day of our lives."

Did Isaac truly understand the impossible situation Josh was in? And did Josh truly understand the nuances of Isaac's situation? The answer to that question was almost certainly a resounding "no". The reveal of the identity of Blackjack to be broke Josh's heart. It seemed Julia's heart was broken. Much of what he was saying may not have been understandable, neither to Isaac nor Julia, as his face turned more and more red with agonizing emotion. He made absolutely sure to whisper to his Ranger friend quietly enough that no one else could hear him. "Julia, this 'Blackjack' and Isaac... you're wrong. They are the same person. Two sides of the same person, but they're the same person. And Julia, I have to stress. You can't tell anyone. Not the Head Rangers. Not even your best friends. No one. If anyone at the League finds out we willingly refused to hold him for arrest, we could lose more than our jobs. We could go to prison. Maybe even for life."

The crying Gym Leader turned his attention back to Isaac. And the Rocket was absolutely correct. While he didn't know it, his true assassin that first day, , was the one that was actually trying to kill him. If only he knew that, none of this misunderstanding would happen. And he would likely never know. "...Is that why you beat me within an inch of my life, then saved my life... not once, not twice, but thrice?" It all made sense now. While his faith in the League's teachings was unwavering, his faith in the League's actions was starting to unravel. But he was in too deep now. He was a Gym Leader: one of Hoenn's finest teachers and fighters. He fought with the weapons of speed and level-headedness in his hands. And he was not using that second weapon well at all.

Isaac had another point: just like League was not all benevolent and just, Rocket was not all malevolent and evil. "I don't know what to say. Just... I feel betrayed. How many truly innocent lives, like yours, is the League taking? How many more will fall to protect the true problem people within Rocket that are the source of this senseless war? Meteno is coming, and we need to be working together to stop it, not against each other." Mostly, yes, but there were bad apples within League, like , the Silph Elite that he did not dare name. That had very nearly ruined a friendship with . He had already lost, or very nearly lost, a close friend in the form of Isaac today. He did not need to repeat that with the very person he had trained to be a Ranger. Even if that person decided Ranging was not for him. "Why do they not realize that? If we don't work together to stop it, everyone loses. League and Rocket."

The revelation was just too much for his emotionally weak heart to handle. "Isaac, I implore you," he sobbed, his eyes so filled with tears that he couldn't even see. "You've got to get out of Rocket. Someone with your morals doesn't deserve to have your reputation marred by the malice their higher-ups orchestrate. I can help you. And I'm sure Julia would, too. I have immense resources at my disposal through my Gym and my personal team of Pokémon. Fake your own death if you have to. Do what you have to, I don't care. Just let me help you get out of there." His eyelids had been closed shut by a veil of salty water. "This isn't about League or Rocket. Perhaps what Hoenn needs is a movement to show how... how both the League and Rocket are wrong. Regardless, I respect your decision. But I'm begging you... please... let me..."

Josh's consciousness expired, falling into a deep slumber. It would be trivial for Isaac or Julia to tell he was still alive, just asleep and hard to wake. In his deep slumber, the divine Pokémon of his dreams appeared to him once more...

"Show me...or DIE."

Raikou disappeared in a flash of white lightning, the roar of a sonic boom mooing in Josh's ears. Flinging himself toward the two with outstretched claws in an impossibly fast TACHYON TEMPEST, this was Josh's moment. He would demonstrate to the sacred Beast the toils he went through in forging foresight, judgment, and insight.

Deftly holding Saber's reins, the world around Josh seemed to slow to a crawl. Lightning strikes crawled to the ground, and individual raindrops were clearly visible as they fell. Even the noble electric feline, his legs impossibly outstretched as a result of the raw speed his lunge reached, was clearly visible if shrouded by electrical arcing. Josh slammed his heels into Saber's flanks and yanked on the Manectric's reins hard to the right. The two dove to the right, clean out of the way of their charging attacker.

Raikou shook his head from the tremendous recoil as Josh found himself panting, slumped in Saber's saddle. The royal feline let out a roar indistinguishable from the deafening thunderclap he heard before. Then, with about as much warning as everything started, the rain stopped. The dark clouds still lingered to represent the threat of another storm, but the storm ravaging the open tower basement passed.

"Josh..." the noble voice echoed in the racer's mind again. This time with not a threatening tone, but a solemn one. Raikou slowly walked up to his Manectric's side. "Alongside COURAGE, your FORESIGHT has flashed like a lightning bolt. Alongside CONFIDENCE, your JUDGMENT has echoed like booming thunder. Alongside AMBITION, your INSIGHT has roared like a shredding downburst. I am satisfied with your spiritual grit. Now only your mental and physical grit remain to develop. If you truly have the mental grit to fight alongside me...then catch me. If you can."

Blackjack's words weren't for Julia, but she took in every last one of them. Again, she remembered what he'd said about the people who fell through the cracks and ended up in Rocket because the League had failed them. He'd tried to stop that from happening to these protesters, even when things had turned fatally violent, because he knew where that path led.

[break][break]Time and time again, Blackjack had proven that he wasn't just another evil Rocket lackey. Maybe that was why Josh's confirmation that Blackjack and Isaac Merlo were one and the same, while still weighing heavy on her heart, didn't hurt as much as she thought it would. Blackjack hadn't tried to kill Mauville's Gym Leader. Instead, Isaac Merlo had tried to prepare his friend Josh Devlin for the worst that Rocket could bring. It had nearly ended in disaster, and Julia still wasn't happy about Josh ending up in the hospital, but Isaac's tears and the bitter laugh that escaped him spoke a million words about how much he regretted it.

[break][break]Josh didn't need to tell her the risks of keeping this secret. "I don't care about any of that," she said. "I'll do it for my friend. For our friend." For someone who'd been put into a bad situation that he didn't deserve.

[break][break]Yet when Josh said that Julia would help Isaac escape Rocket, Julia hesitated. She'd once told Isaac, in his Blackjack persona, that he didn't seem like he belonged in Rocket. That he'd make a good Ranger, even. And he'd gotten upset at that. But... no, this wasn't just about the League and Rocket. This was about doing the right thing. This was about putting aside faction loyalties for the sake of the people of Hoenn. But before she could put a voice to those feelings, Josh's consciousness faded.

[break][break]"Josh!" Julia gasped. She set Sparkie down, and the two knelt over the fallen Gym Leader. Fortunately, he was just unconscious—no, it was more like he was in a deep slumber. The events of the day must have really gotten to him. Julia didn't blame him one bit. There was still a heaviness in her heart that made her want to lie down right beside him, but she wasn't done just yet. She rose to her feet and looked straight at Isaac.

[break][break]"You're wrong about one thing," she said, dragging the words past the weight within her. "It does matter. Everything we do, everything we want... it all matters. Even if someone tries to make it feel like it doesn't. Even if the League or Rocket or whoever else tries to overpower us. Even if maybe we can't stop them from doing something really, really stupid." Like condemning another world, even a "hostile" one, to die just to save their own. "We can still do something. We can still fight. We can still do good for the world. Just like you did for these people today."

[break][break]She didn't dare draw attention to the tears welling in her eyes by trying to wipe them away. There was part of her that still struggled to accept Isaac as a member of Team Rocket. She'd spent so long seeing Team Rocket as this monolithic evil that if she hadn't seen Isaac and Blackjack's goodness, she would have dismissed him as a liar and a traitor. But she had seen it. She'd seen firsthand that even people with good intentions could fall into Rocket's grasp. She'd never forgive them for taking advantage of people like that. She didn't think she could forgive the League for driving people to that, either, especially after what she'd seen today. But she could forgive people like Isaac, who'd been driven into a corner and just wanted to make the best of it.

[break][break]She looked at the officers being roused from their slumber. They prooooobably weren't going to just stand around and let Julia and Isaac chat like this. Actually, if they overheard any of what they were saying, that could be really bad. She knelt back down and whispered something to Sparkie. The Raichu looked skeptical at first, but when she saw Julia's smiling face, she nodded, determined. Julia swiped the back of her hand across her eyes and stood back up.

[break][break]"All right, Blackjack!" Julia raised her voice and pointed dramatically at her friend. "I'm not gonna let you get away this time! Sparkie, get him!" And then she smiled and winked at him, mouthing the word "Go." Sparkie took a moment to squeak out something like a challenge, then pulled herself back on her tail like she was revving up. Isaac would have plenty of time to get on the move before she actually launched after him.

[attr="class","skulloverlap"]BUT HOLD YOUR BREATH, GUESS WHO'S RUNNING THE SHOW?

[attr="class","skullbody"]Josh wondered just why Isaac kept saving him, even when they stood on opposite sides of the battlefield. "Today, it was to save you from yourself. Back at your gym, it was to save you from my own mistakes. But the first time?" Isaac sighed, a tearful smile spreading across his face as he looked at Josh. "I didn't even know who you were back then. But like hell was I just gonna let you die."[break][break]

Most of the rest Josh just needed to process on his own. If only Josh knew that Rocket had no intention of stopping Meteno, but had every intention of making the League's life harder in the process. If only he realized the chains that bound him to Rocket dug too deeply to possibly just remove. If only he realized that Isaac wasn't just being a dramatic ho; what they've seen so far was only the tip of the iceberg, and even Isaac had no clue how deeply this would go.[break][break]

Part of him wanted to explain more, but there were two problems with that. One, the officers were stirring. Two, Josh was stirrn't.[break][break]

Isaac was barely able to manage a quick "Thank you" before unconsciousness took Josh. It was an offer he could never accept, but the least he could do was show his appreciation. As Julia and Sparkie checked on him, he squatted down to start lifting him up. "Here, you can borrow Buffaloman for a bit. Make sure our friend here makes it back in one piece, okay?"[break][break]

He had faith that Julia would do so. After all, nothing in the world seemed capable of breaking her stride. The same revelation that knocked Josh unconscious only left her finding new ways of challenging him. If any part of her world was shattered, she'd pressed it back together with nothing but her own optimism and will. Was she as naive as Isaac once thought she was? No. She was something far greater, something he wished he could even imagine measuring up to.[break][break]

She was hope.[break][break]

He heard her determination, her drive, her vision, mulling them all over in his head. And then he spoke. "In the eyes of the League and Rocket? Not a bit. Their goals are to survive. What they do for us, or to us? That's just a side effect." He closed his eyes, sighing. And when he opened them anew, they were flush with determination. "But to the people living their lives, the ones we were lucky enough to protect and the ones we were too slow for alike? There's nothing that matters more."[break][break]

"Everything anyone does is both the least and most important thing to ever happen. And that's why-"[break][break]

The officers were starting to peel themselves off the pavement, groaning in agony. Oops. Isaac was running out of time. He hopped back onto Sunny's back, looking down towards Julia and Sparkie as they schemed amongst each other. "We will never stop fighting, Ranger!" He doubled down on the gravel. He doubled down on the panache. Sunny threw his wings out, sparks of light flying from his body. In the blink of an eye, he'd switched from a supportive, appreciative friend to a cartoon villain.[break][break]

The hero rose to heed his call, answering with a dramatic point and a cheeky wink. Sparkie turned up the throttle on her spark-surfing tail, and Sunny answered in kind, turning to rocket into the sky at light speed. Isaac reclined back on his mount, shooting a mock salute to Sparkie that just so happened to double as a very real one to Julia.[break][break]

With that, the two dueling Pokemon were little more than specks on the horizon. It wouldn't be long before everyone else followed suit. The protestors were gone, but there was no further damage left in their wake, let alone any other injuries. It was as if, after they had fallen unconscious, the whole scenario had been frozen in time. Some wanted the whole mess investigated further. Others, thankful at how peacefully it unraveled, were content to chalk it up to a tragedy born of confusion.[break][break]

Yet one had his own intentions as he walked away from the scene of the crime. He gripped his face in a single gloved hand, pulling it off in a single effortless tug. It wiggled loosely in the air, then degenerated back into a pink blob with a silly smile. He fished a miniature Remoraid out of his pocket, giving it an affectionate scratch on the head before returning it to its holster. He wouldn't remove his stolen uniform yet, but the second he got home he was setting it ablaze.[break][break]

It hadn't been the slam dunk of a situation he envisioned. He'd expected to wake up to far more chaos and hysteria, at least a solidly ransacked city block. Instead, things had simmered down to frustrating levels. And he'd kicked things off with a murder and a framing and everything! Oh well. With how things were going for the League and Rocket, there would always be a next time.[break][break]

There were some on both sides who tried to make good faith efforts towards each other. There were some on both sides who desired nothing more than the other's destruction. But for Hank Winters, this was just another mission for the glory of Rocket.[break][break]

Maybe next time, he'd be able to cause some real damage.
