Zev gave Smoke a nod, and the Gengar floated into the chamber until he hovered above the shard of the primal crystal. The Pokémon watched his master carefully, prepared to obey.[break][break]

Once the door was closed, Zev moved to stand near Lulu, though he was not trained to decipher the data that would appear on the screens. At her cue, he gave the command.[break][break]

"Smoke, use NEVER-ENDING NIGHTMARE."[break][break]

The shadows of the enclosure deepened and grew, writhing like spectral tendrils within the glass walls. Then, all at once, they slammed into the primal shard. Instantly, a brilliant and expansive light filled the chamber, pushing back the shadows.

His hand lifted to soothe over the top of Nimuë’s head. “She took to it well, surprisingly.” For the first time trying it out, anyway. It was an odd thing, really, and he found himself entirely fascinated by it—though perhaps it was no stranger than other disturbances in nature that had been uncovered and harnessed for use.[break][break]

Maybe Fern just enjoyed the aesthetic flair that came along with it.[break][break]

Taking the tera orb back, he held it in his hand—inactive for the time being. He would wait to make the transformation until it was the proper time for it. Right then, though, he hung about uselessly as he waited for the first test to be completed. Watching through the window as Zev’s gengar lit up the space—curious about what might be seen when it faded back into visibility.

a nearby porygon-z went into the chamber before it was shut. once the z-move was administered, after the light dispersed, both pokémon and the primal crystal shard disappeared, sucked away into another dimension. [break][break]
the screen they were looking at suddenly showed a different world. the mechanical kingdom. it was lulu's first glimpse at it, and a look of awe spreading over her face as she leaned closer to scrutinize the details. gears, and mech made up the entirety of their view.[break][break]
"incredible." she stared another few moments, before asking zev beside her, "is this the city you went to?"[break][break]

Zev nodded, unsurprised by the video feed on the screen. The landscape looked exactly as he remembered, from the pipework to the gear-like embellishments on the architecture. In the distance, a tower rose over the shorter buildings, though it seemed even farther away compared to when he'd looked upon it in Littleroot.[break][break]

"It is. You can see the structure that houses the energy source there." He pointed at the tower on the screen.[break][break]

His gaze turned to the rest of the feed. A few of the strange red Pokémon seemed to have noticed Zev's Gengar and Lulu's Porygon-Z and were fast approaching.[break][break]

"Those Pokémon are hostile," Zev explained callously, lacking concern regarding his own Pokémon's well being. Smoke could defend himself, after all. "But the crystal should teleport ours back here any moment now."

He watched the porygon-z follow with obvious curiosity. Everything revolving around this shard was just as new to him. Well, actually, most of this was. All he could account for were his own experiences, and there was no telling if the shard he held would open up to the same place on Mt. Pyre.[break][break]

After all, it hadn't been the same sort of place as this strange, mechanical city. Not the same sort of tangible location. Or maybe it had been - in the moment, from the sky, it had been hard to tell if it was the same Mt. Pyre, just more spectral. Or something entirely new.[break][break]

It was easy to put that aside, however, as the focus remained on the old, mechanical structures. All gears and cogs. At the mention of the pokemon fast approaching the two pokemon that that had been portaled in, Fern leaned a bit closer and squinted. "What are they?" Certainly nothing he'd ever personally seen before.

the fact that the signal was working, that the video came through from this other dimension was thrilling in itself, but lulu kept the excitement surrounding her tech to herself. this new world was something to behold, certainly. plenty to talk about.[break][break]

”so, then. we have direct access, without needing to go through the league’s guard.” at least, that’s what it sounded like to her. it meant easier and deeper exploration.[break][break]

enemies were approaching on the screen, now. closer, closer… at fern delaney ’s question, she shook her head. ”no idea. mr. harcourt? any ideas?” a prompt to further describe what they were looking at, if he'd gained any insight on the wildlife while there.[break][break]

she leaned at the edge of the control panel with suspense, fingers picking lightly at a cuticle. she didn’t want to lose the porygon. it was her best one.[break][break]

but they were back, shortly, via the power of its z-move. when they reappeared in the chamber, her shoulders dropped with relief. ”welcome back! good job!” the enthusiasm in her praise was rare.[break][break]

the chamber door was opened. the head scientist went to grab the crystal cautiously, before exiting again and asking Zev Harcourt , ”will you be leaving this with us for now? there is much research to be done, if you’re willing to do so. we’d keep you updated, of course.”[break][break]

she went toset the other crystal, then, beckoning fern delaney to command his pokemon into the chamber, ”alright, mr. delaney. your turn.” and the experiment would go similarly, with the addition of the terastallization in its beginning—but the screen would come up black this time. blank.

At his companions' question regarding the strange new Pokémon, Zev shook his head. "I'm not familiar with them. All I know is that Pokéballs don't work on them, and Beast Delarosa described them as 'soulless', as if they have no life. Like they're just machines."[break][break]

His Gengar and Lulu's Porygon-Z returned in another flash of light, causing the video feed to end in abrupt, monotonous static. Smoke floated back to Zev's side and slid, effortlessly, into the man's shadow.[break][break]

Zev nodded at Lulu when she emerged from the chamber with his shard of the primal crystal in hand. "That's fine. It's been in storage here in Sootopolis for safekeeping, but I figured it's more useful in your hands than locked away."[break][break]

The Beast turned his attention back to the screen as the second phase of the experiment teleported Fern's and Lulu's Pokémon away. When only a black, blank void showed, however, Zev frowned. Shouldn't it have shown a different world, like what had happened with his shard?

He listened carefully as Zev Harcourt explained what he knew of the strange, metal creatures. How strange. If they weren’t catchable, surely they weren’t any sort of legitimate Pokémon — robotic or not. “It’s unfortunate you weren’t able to bring one of them back for study. Though, they are a bit bulky aren’t they?” And maybe a bit difficult to bring down, from the looks of it.[break][break]

At the prompting, Fern directed his typhlosion to follow the instruction. She lumbered into the chamber, firing off an aimed TERA BLAST. Only to yield…nothing. Absolutely nothing. Fern frowned, watching the dark screen alongside the others. Blue eyes sharp and and attentive to any last minute flickers or signs of change that never came. “Well, that’s disappointing,” he murmured, disapproval creeping in at the edges of his voice. He had hoped the correlation would be there, given the nature of the terasterallization in relation to the shards, and the meteor itself.[break][break]

As his typhlosion was released from the chamber, the admin relented. “You did what you could,” he praised Nim regardless, giving her a pat between droopy ears. His attention drifted back toward the scientist and beast, respectively. “I can’t say I know why it wouldn’t access the spacial rifts caused at Mt. Pyre.” Though at the same time, what had been revealed that day hadn’t been a strange city as the one they’d just seen. It had been more like…planes of existence? It must have been trickier to navigate.[break][break]

His frown deepened, eyes narrowing in thought. “Unless perhaps it requires being at the mount itself where the planes are most unsteady.” But for all Fern knew, perhaps this shard wouldn’t correlate to the same location as the one found at Littleroot had.

”indeed. we’ve been waiting quite some time to run these types of experiments.”[break][break]
a few months was all the time it took to become outdated by the league’s scientific progress. finally, while things were shaken up in their reality, they had a real opportunity to get ahead. to get control over something powerful before the league did.[break][break]
would they catch up with primal energy? surpass them, even?[break][break]
as she went to retrieve the second primal shard, admin delaney’s idea earned a nod.[break][break]
”perhaps. we’ll test it there too, then.” she returned with the shard, handing it towards delaney. ”that, however, concludes our experiments for today. do either of you have questions?”[break][break]

Lulu's question coaxed a rare half-smile from Zev, a slight tug at the corner of his mouth. "I have plenty of questions, but nothing that can be answered now. Not until you've conducted your experiments."[break][break]

He turned to leave, guessing that their business had reached its conclusion.[break][break]

"I'd like to join any expeditions to the clockwork world using my shard. Let me know when they've been planned. Until then, I look forward to reading about what you discover, Dr. Flint."
