the number of known moves have been reaching the thousands, and a method for a pokemon to have access to most of them have always existed. the single move was always evoked the idea of whimsy, but as human tendency goes, a study to shift chances to their favor was bound to occur.

a group of students at slateport university aim to harness the power of math to get a better understanding of the move. what kind of move is likely to be called? are some more common than others? what's the probability between each category of move to be called?

most of them likely don't have answers, but the students aren't fazed by the volatility of the move. they wouldn't be hoenn citizens if they were. trainers from all over the region are called to volunteer their pokemon who know of the move for the study, many of whom are enticed by the results of the study as well.

kyle was one of them, sending his granbull over to take part in the research. it stands on an open area, having ample space to display the move in case it rolls something destructive, and wiggles its finger.

razor shell

the finger wiggle turns into a swipe as a shell made out of energy appears on his paws. while rather boring and uneventful, the students covering the topic has to record it regardless.

this was the last sprint before winter break puts a temporary hiatus for their project. this crunch time was their nightmare before christmas.

She had lent her pokemon to a bunch of researchers who wanted to study how exactly metronome worked. [break][break]

She picked this one mostly cause she was just interested to see how it'd play out with her luck factor. "All right Clefairy, metronome." as she braced herself to be attacked by self destruct or explosion of all things.[break][break]

Clefairy raises her finger into the air and shook it wildly, small little thin yellow lines flew into the sky and suddenly formed a net falling down on top of a training dummy that was set out on the other side of the field. "Oh. Hey. Whaddaya know, Electroweb." she says as she turns towards the researchers and rubbed the bottom of her nose smuggly as if she did anything important there. However they seemed to be eating it up and scribbling on their note pads wildly. Clefairy was the most offput by it all.

Of a soft blush colour and a shell pattern that is at odds with most of its species, the Togepi that one of POG Bank’s employees is tasked with delivering to Slateport University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics is in fact shiny. This is unlikely to have any influence in the study it has been loaned for, of course, but as if the Togepi herself were well aware of the low odds of her existence, she’s as prissy as it gets.

She raises one arm, pointing at the students observing her, and wagging her little hand back and forth in a regular interval, which of course results in the activation of her METRONOME.

The last time Trillium the Togekiss had used METRONOME, he'd been in space! That had been pretty cool, but also super scary. Now, he hovered in front of a group of eager Slateport University students (around the same age as his beloved Nomi), which was a decidedly less exciting, but also less terrifying landscape. Well, they certainly seemed really curious about him, what with their focused expressions and notepads at the ready.[break][break]
"Go on, Trill," Nomi urged gently. It was time![break][break]
Trillium sucked in a breath, flapped his wings a little harder, and summoned a METRONOME. The shimmering energy immediately transformed into a HYDRO PUMP that drenched the two students closest to him in a sudden onslaught of water. They yelped in surprise and jumped back, notepads dripping sadly. However, it seemed they were anything but deterred, for they immediately began gesturing to their peers to take notes in their stead. Trillium smiled happily, trying to sense whether he'd done a good job or not. Nobody seemed upset about the big splash, so that was a good sign.[break][break]
"Sorry about that," Nomi apologized, though Trill could see the small smile forming at the corners of her lips. She wanted to laugh, but she was being polite about it. She was a nice girl like that.[break][break]
One of the students requested a second METRONOME so they could take down some data about what might come after a HYDRO PUMP. Nomi nodded, though Trill could tell she was amused by the request, as if she had figured some kind of tricky equation out and was waiting to see when the rest of them would get it.[break][break]
Trillium was happy to do it all again. This time, however, the METRONOME turned into a fiery DRAGON RAGE. The students who'd been soaked by the water earlier were smart enough this time to stand farther away. The students muttered, and Trill could hear the frantic sound of pens on paper as notes were taken.[break][break]
"It's truly random," Nomi murmured to Trill. "I'm not sure there's anything more to it..." She chuckled, expression a mix of entertainment and exasperation.[break][break]
Well, Trill was happy to keep doing it as long as they needed![break][break]

Ah, the university! A place filled with the region's brightest academic minds. Surely one of them would lend an ear to Andrea's pet theories about human-Pokémon metamorphosis and how Kadabra definitely used to be a human boy. But first, she needed to earn some brownie points by assisting the institute with their own research.

"You know, I'm something of a scientist myself." The woman dressed up in dragon pajamas proudly proclaimed to the group of sleep-deprived students scrambling to finish this assignment before winter break. She held a Togepi in her outstretched arms, offering it to them like a sacrificial lamb. "This is one of my friends. His name is Eggnog."

'Eggnog' sat on top of the testing table, and began wagging its tiny finger to and fro. Its Metronome turned into Poison Tail, striking one of the notes-taking students with a venom-tipped appendage made out of pure energy.

"Oh my gosh! Are you alright?" Andrea worriedly ran up to the assaulted student, who raised his shaky hand and gave her a thumbs up. Meanwhile, Eggnog smiled innocently, being too young to have any concept of right or wrong.

a bunch of nerds want to use math to better learn the capabilities of METRONOME? cian was interested the moment he heard about the opportunity. this also serves as good pr so his togekiss finds its way over to them with ease.

and it is there, with them watching, that togekiss performs the first METRONOME.

Sy liked metronome. The idea of risk and chance was right up his alley. So what if sometimes it was just tail whip and other times it was enough fire to burn all of Hoenn off the map.

After double checking to make sure he has the right Togepi, he let the little one go forth and use metronome--

which turned into flying press and ended up yeeting the Togepi belly first into the crowd of students. Good thing he weighs less than a gallon of milk! He crowd surfed for a while and made everyone happy and smile.

And so the grand finale fell to her—a Clefable.

After witnessing students getting drenched or accidentally stabbed at by all manner of random attacks, she was the last one to go in the line.

However… she wasn’t exactly prepared for this to happen!

Once she’d wagged her digits and the little pinging (or shinging) noise announced that the Metronome had triggered…

Things were quiet. Abnormally quiet.

At least, until the Clefable started glowing. Wasn’t… wasn’t that like, an ominous sign?!

And then everything else around the Clefable began to glow ominously, before one of the sharp-eyed students noticed that—

Panicked screaming and yelling echoed through the room as the Clefable’s Metronome chained into a powerful

EXPLOSION

Kaboom!
