 From the outside looking in, one might think Penelope perfectly fitted in line with the beast of Hoenn, acting as the council representative to witness their hunt forward.

Penelope might've even believed it herself when she first intruded on their expedition.

What a fool she was to ever consider that a possibility.

Spanning out from the moment the group descended into this expansive space of purgatory, the beasts had all effortlessly fitted into their roles, never batting an eye to the spires that loomed over them, or the consequences awaiting an expedition into the unknown.

The only thing that gave her the courage to follow through was the necessity of it.
[break][break]
You either push through the lonely space of change, or you don't. And you get left behind.

"So those were the ones the reports detailed," She spoke out loud, wanting to mull over Melody's words over the negativity filling her headspace. Together with the elite four, she kept herself nearby, watching the spirits flicker and flow back toward them, moving along the revelation dance.

Hands immediately reached down to her hips, clicking to life the first pokeball within reach. An arc of crimson came spitting out from it, materializing into a Mr Rime.

"Keep to our defenses and follow her lead," she directed the pokemon.
[break][break]
It was at that moment, another voice cut through the static of heightened emotions, forcing Penelope's neck to snap toward its source.

"Seriously?"
[break][break]
Envy dripped from every syllable. Even here, even when they were fighting for every continued breath, his first instinct was to move towards the next achievement. The next badge of honor. And when he pockets it? Despite knowing very well both pieces were set to be fed back to Eva Morales and her office, and their expedition acted as a shared experience, that Moltres was her ultimate goal, the sheer sight of Matias taking again and assuming it to be within his rights, all while shooting back another look of disdain her way -- it burned her up.

It was there her eyes caught wind of the broken seal hidden behind his head. Glowing an iridescent blue, foreign markings were etched along its wall, alluring her into taking a step forward. Then another.

The more she stared at it, the more the enigmatic bitterness of envy swelled inside, sprouting a green-tinted flame within her.

"because I fought for it. I did what no one else could do and found it. brought it back from another world."

Did he? Or was he just another serpent toying those around him into committing themselves to his selfish, self-obsessed cause? It made her wonder: when left alone in a vacuum with none other than himself, what power did he hold? What strength is there to achieve when there is no one left to steal from?

Knotted words fumbled in her throat, thrumming against every heavy swallow she consumed of the heavy air. Before given the chance to find the shine of light, however, a shadow broke in through her right, again stealing her attention the way Matias originally had.

"This is what we get for fucking with spirits."

Pointed eyes glanced back at her Pokemon.

"Mr Rime, protect!"

Though the words came out, they were not fast enough to combat the speed of the vengeful spirit. Flashing bright, a flaming V-CREATE came blazing directly toward them, looking to incinerate Melody Miro entirely.

The one singular granular of hope Penelope still held out for the league.

For whatever reason, the grating voice of a familiar FERNANDO SILPH came slicing through.

She still remembered that night. When, after retreating back home and wiping away the piles of snow that coated her shoulders, she had kept mulling over those exact words. Over and over, fiddling with them as one would a coin between their fingers. Eventually, it drew her to a question she hadn't found an answer to.

What was more important: Hoenn's ultimate success? Or the fact she'd be the one behind it?

Back on Mt Chimney, when her emotions had left her feeling ravaged and vulnerable and all the things she despises, she had thought for a heartbeat of a second it was the ladder. That, if she believed in the former, there was never a point in going through the torture that was appointment, and reducing down to a blabbering hypocrite, and going back on her every word, and icing on the cake, consistent life-or-death situations.

That her loss of identity was for nothing.

Pushing off from a nearby rock, Penelope reached out to snatch Melody's wrist, using the momentum of her sudden jerk of movements to throw the idol back behind the protective shield of her Mr Rime. A costly decision marked by the searing sensation that followed.

The fire swallowed her body whole, chomping and gnawing at her skin, tearing it apart bit by bit, until only her bloodcurdling screams could be made out. Louder and louder they grew, clawing at the skies for mercy that would never be given. Once a hopeful Icarus looking to capture the sun had been reduced down to a ball of wax, catapulting to the ocean where it'd soon drown and be forgotten. Like all else before it.
