THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

From the outside looking in, the establishment was no different than an inn in their world. A few wooden chairs and some tables were scattered near the front of the main entrance, lit up by lanterns hanging from the ceiling.

Further down, sprawled across the center of the room, a large desk lay. Behind it, keys were hung in rows, each one with a small piece of paper attached to it.

"Looks dead," Penelope murmured, to no one in particular. She kept near the back of the group, hovering closer to Angelo than anyone else. It was nice having him join them. Gave her some ease of mind.

Without warning, a dusclops phased through the wall beside them, waddling up to the desk, slow and steady, red eye swaying left and right in a fluid motion.
[Break][break]
She assumed someone would approach them. They must, right? With her at the backline, it only felt natural to drift to the side in wait. Small markings were etched into the pillars of the building. Some were more engraved than others, created through harsh swings of some sharpened object.
[Break][break]
Her fingers lightly trailed each one, following the soft stories they whispered. Some were short phrases attached by fleeting names, others full sentences of anguish. Given where they were, there was no telling reality from fiction. What was real and what was fabricated to feel real.

A breath caught itself in her throat. One had caught her by surprise.

These two simple words tumbled in her head. Considering their last expedition, it was not a stretch to see them attached to another ghastly sight. It made sense in some gruesome way.

Slowly, Penelope looked up at him. Wherever he moved, her eyes would hover, lost to the blurred social pressures that would've tugged her attention elsehwere under normal circumstances.

"it's top tier. there's nothing to rip into."

the only thing the map has right are the few major landmarks they've found and the scale between the distance. the rest of the topography were left out besides a few notes, given how his experience with maps revolve around fantasy roleplaying games.

as he marks the inn in their map, he soon follows MATIAS SILPH in. he trails behind, just beside noah faber, as he notices something that catches PENELOPE LIVY's eyes.

"oh, hey, that's matias' name. maybe mine's there too," he remarks before he whips his head to the remaining members of their party. with the addition of angelo vestri, there's more curious people in their group that touch things without permission.

"oi!" he calls them. "do we even have anything to pay for the drinks? will the cleansing tag do?"

kyle, unfortunately, is the type of person to go along with the vibe of the group.

Angelo throws on his best, well-fitting smile. With the company he keeps today, he'd need the shroud.

“Actually, I was pretty impressed,” he responds effortlessly to MATIAS SILPH , as if his opinion of him wasn't rocky at best. “Y'know, Kyle. I could always do with an assistant if you ever feel like a change of pace.”

It was a good map, that much wasn't bullshit. Some interesting locations on there he'd have to check out himself later.

After marking details on his own separate sheet, jotting down coordinates, distance and topographical notes, Angelo heads into the inn alongside PENELOPE LIVY .

“Was that a joke, councilwoman?” Angelo mumbles quietly to the redhead, their shoulders nearly brushing as they linger behind the group. Sharing a small, teasing smile only for her.

They were in the realm of the dead, after all.

Thirsty more so out of curiosity, he drifts towards the bar when they get inside. Perhaps it wasn't wise to drink unknown, otherworldly substances but he was nothing but insatiably adventurous - also, it was going free.

Slipping in beside MATIAS SILPH , he watches as a silent dusclops drifts by, situating itself behind the counter. It stares at the two of them unblinking and mute. Waiting.

“Hey. Five of whatever you've got on tap there,” Angelo breaks the thick quiet first, tilting his chin towards the barrel setup. Pausing only to acknowledge kyle lopez 's call. “What do you take? Cash, cleansing tags?”

Souls, he wonders. Matias did offer to pay.

Silence.

Large, phantom hands begin to pour dark liquid into the tankards. Frothy heads of the beverage looking suspiciously like furls of steam.

for reasons obvious only to himself, he avoids reading over some of the engravings, particularly his own. he'd rather not know what he might say before dying if only so he can avoid some sort of loop that binds him to his inevitable fate.[break][break]

he has no problems reading over the other engravings, though.[break][break]

Fingers tracing the engravings one last time, a breath died in her throat.

As vividly painted as any other, her last words remained engraved among the souls of the lost, left for only Penelope's adventurous finger to discover. Pain fell upon her, raking her chest with immense pressure. Right here, at that moment, she could finally snatch back the final moments of her best friend's fleeting, glorious, all-too-short life. The last puzzle piece that'd been stolen from her years ago. Her nails dug into the wood and she forcibly turned to angelo vestri and MATIAS SILPH.

"Be careful," she murmured to noah faber before passing, "you might find something you didn't want to see in the first place."

Reaching the two men at the bar, Penelope slid one of the tankards to herself. Dark liquid sloshed with movement, nearly spilling over its rim. She doesn't hesitate before chucking it back, greedy gulps sending it barreling down the very pits of her stomach. Only after does she finally regard angelo vestri with a faint smile and weary, "thanks."

It's in that moment of reprieve that Penelope, and anyone else who'd partaken in a sip of their drink, would feel a SUPERNATURAL FORCE compel them into enforcing judgment onto the first person they'd laid their eyes onto. For her, that person was none other than kyle lopez.

Memories of their conversations, their expeditions, everything she read of him -- it all came piling into her head at once, contorting her expression into one of a sharp scowl.

he doesn't see it as sad, but rather of him trying to be responsible at the very end. knowing himself though, whatever matias suggested was also a possibility.

as he thinks of the recipient of his last words, his eyes travel to noah faber. "yours would probably be similar to those," he tells as he wraps an arm around his shoulders. "you'd probably have regrets too, you dreamer. wish i can say the same."

it's meant to be comforting, but kyle fails to paint his words for the job. instead, he looks for more parting words on the wall whose authors he might recognize.

he dangles the glass with the tips of his fingers, reluctant to drink it still. it wasn't that he was scared to ingest foreign substance in his body, but rather scared how intoxication will mess up with the psychological effects the environment projects on them.

“I'll be sure to tell you when it happens.” He calls over his shoulder, nonchalantly. Not even following MATIAS SILPH away from the bar as the others gather around the wall of last words. “Got to keep some mystery in life.”

Death had winked at him once or twice during his time in Hoenn, as he's sure it will flirt with him and he with it again in the future, yet.

He'd rather not know which dance would be his last.

Angelo's smile is carefully kind when PENELOPE LIVY slides up beside him. He'd pegged her as the composed sort but as the councilwoman snatches back her mystery brew, he can't help but see something frayed.

“Cheers,” he tilts his tankard towards the redhead, before it gravitates towards the pilot's lips.

Only for his gaze to remain in PENELOPE LIVY's orbit, long after its taste sinks down his throat.

Remaining on the woman who'd thrown away her dreams, her life, to try and incite the change she wanted to see in a messy institution.

“I think about what you told me, about why you quit HBS, sometimes.” Angelo feels himself compelled to say, uttered quietly, just for her. “Y'know, I respect you for that, Penny. Not everyone could do what you did, pack up the life they built.”

Her reward for doing what he so far hadn't been able to do? An honest expression of praise from a man who kept himself behind lock and key.

And for her punishment, for egotistically thinking she could actually change it? She was living in it.

noah takes a swig of his drink. he's not thirsty, nor desperate for its taste. instead, he savours the darkness cast over one's face by a tilted cup. it hides his eyes from accidentally catching his name. a phrase known intimately by his tongue.[break][break]

like angelo vestri, he wishes it remains a mystery. though, as the inn flickers, he wonders if curiosity will get the better of him in the end.[break][break]

"i'm gonna say the most off-kilter shit before i die so that my wood block is like, the most famous one here." he says to kyle lopez, and everyone else.[break][break]

his gaze slides over to matias. the drink's effect takes hold, swirling in his stomach.[break][break]

"matias," noah says, "you're a good guy."[break][break]

he does not know of the true depth of matias' deeds. his suspension, his eventual or concurrent tribulations of love. instead, noah knows of his heroics. his fearlessness in littleroot and in the battles of the borders.[break][break]

"you're kinda rough around the edges, but like, you're just trying to survive, yeah?" noah wonders if its the potency of his drink rendering his tongue loose. "would you agree?"[break][break]

anecdote and observations pile upon each other to nudge noah closer towards a personal deliberation of matias' character.

shrugging, he leaves the tankard behind and loops an arm around noah faber to drag him to the scales.[break][break]

"alright, watch."[break][break]

he steps onto the scale, waiting for moments before it lowers. plummets, really, sinking into the hole in the floor. matias would've gone all the way in if he hadn't stepped off right before that.[break][break]

"huh! interesting."[break][break]

35 encounter and/or make use of a set of scales, that your character can stand on. a nearby plaque states that should the scale the character is standing on be weighed down, they are supposedly more sinful. should the scale ascend, the character is supposedly more good.

Breathe in, breathe out. The judgment of the champion's invisible sins was none of her concerns. Even if they evoked a lick of ENVY from her.

his relationship with his patron differs from other avatars. a seed has been planted deep within him, influenced by ho-oh through the beasts. the rebirth has ultimately altered properties of his soul.

the causation of random confessions slipped his thought before the formula rides down his throat. a different reaction comes from the chemistry when he finally takes a swig.

as he turns his eyes on PENELOPE LIVY by chance, his view distorts to a sight of angelo vestri . his orientation changes too. noah faber no longer was by his side and furniture were arranged differently from his previous perspective.

he's felt the same sensation with michiko maeda and her phione before.

only after the initial shock did he feel his chest grow heavy, both literally and figuratively. heavy emotions linger in his, or her, heart— ones with an intensity that he never personally felt before.

he wants to explore her psyche deeper, but he subconsciously pulls out the cleansing tag from her pockets with her hand. the mere touch of it snaps him back to his body.

as soon as he returns, he throws the tankard on the floor.

"t-this place isn't for me." he looks to angelo vestri. "sorry for inviting you to the party when no action's been happening." that's the one thing he knew angelo would look for in an expedition, after all.

kyle slowly turns to PENELOPE LIVY, now holding the tag, as he takes a seat. "...and sorry for prying."

noah leaves his cup on the counter. follows matias to the scales on the side. the embedded sign is almost too simple, too homely, for the implications it bears. [break][break]

"this for real?"[break][break]

while noah's judgement of matias comes with little knowledge of the man's closeted skeletons, the scales operate on different rules. he watches matias plunge downward. a sudden dive into hell— though this realm seemed close enough to it.[break][break]

noah scratches his head.[break][break]

"guess i don't know you too well. do you forget tips? refuse to kiss your pokemon good night?" noah asks after matias hops off. "or maybe you've killed a guy?"[break][break]

the gym leader hops onto the scale's dish and the plate ascends some.[break][break]

"naw, this isn't right." he says, unaware of the switching of souls.
