Her disdain faded out into an evident confusion at the unexpected determination in his words. None of it made any sense to her. He acted as if she had done something to spellbind him into making all these declarations, but to her understanding, she'd just sold the man flowers.[break][break]

It felt as if he'd had a dream about her one night, then woke up and decided that dream was reality.[break][break]

Where he pulled on her, where his words sharpened like knives, she found herself grinning wickedly back in return. A dark laugh bubbled out of her throat, almost manic in its cackling, as she smiled up at him like the madwoman her late husband had always believed her to be.[break][break]

"Do you think you're the first man to threaten me?" Elisabeth taunted him, unable to stop her laughter. "Do you think you're the first man to set me on fire?"[break][break]

This was the truth of him, lurking beneath his lies and his promises. This was the truth that lurked behind all men, when they tried to lure her with their sweet, false nothings into the chambers of their hearts.[break][break]

It delighted her to drag this monstrosity out of them into the light, exposed for all to see.[break][break]

"I know what power is, Matias," she laughed, even as he pulled her across the volcanic floor to the lava pools. "But I know what fear is, too."[break][break]
