Despite having been in each other's lives since December, Gunner had not had the opportunity to invite Summer to his apartment. Originally, it was because their relationship consisted of casual rendezvous — dinner here, a party there, usually ending the night in one of Summer's residences.[break][break]

But now that they were dating each other exclusively, Gunner knew things had to change. He had to show her a side of him she never got to see, not when they were surrounded by the luxury and glam of her own lifestyle. Because in contrast, he was firmly a middle class citizen. While he enjoyed a decent paycheck due to his government career, it paled in comparison to the millions of PD Summer raked in every month.[break][break]

Gunner was sure to meet Summer outside of his apartment complex in Slateport City's upper district when she arrived. He swiped them both into the building, and they took the elevator up to his residence. When they entered, Guinevere, Gunner's Typhlosion, glanced up at them from where she rested on the sofa.[break][break]

His apartment was modest, with two bedrooms, one of them converted into an office. The living room, dining room, and kitchen blended together into one large living area. A bookshelf crammed with science fiction, mystery, and nonfiction books stood against one wall. A couch and two armchairs huddled around a flatscreen TV and a low coffee table. Piled onto the latter were the most recent issues of major business and world news magazines.[break][break]

"Make yourself at home," Gunner told Summer as he took her coat and hung it on a standing coat rack. "I'll get dinner started right away."

Summer was excited to see the secret life of Gunner Graves. It made her feel like she was special. He welcomed her into his life, and he was being vulnerable.[break][break]

But, of course, the moment she had arrived at his apartment complex, the duality between the two of them was easy to see. It wasn't that his apartment wasn't nice.[break][break]

It was just... small, compared to every place she owned or had lived in.[break][break]

Summer looked around the living area as they entered, noticing a couple of doors she assumed led to his bedroom and another to a different bedroom.[break][break]

"Lamb chops and roast vegetables, with some fresh bread I bought earlier," Gunner replied from the kitchen.[break][break]

He had already prepared the ingredients, letting the meat come to room temperature and seasoning the vegetables — broccoli, bell peppers, red onions, zucchini, and sweet potato. He set the oven to preheat and began arranging his pots and pans.[break][break]

"I have a bunch of different drinks, too, but I got some wine for the occasion yesterday. A bottle of Pinot noir and another of Cabernet Sauvignon, whichever you're in the mood for."[break][break]

They were not expensive wines, but he liked their flavor. He knew either of them would pair well with the rustic, hearty flavors of the lamb.[break][break]

Glancing up from his work, Gunner asked, "Should I put on some music?"

Summer hummed in response. Sounded like a delightful meal. She wondered just how on par his skills in the kitchen were to his other assets.[break][break]

The thought made her chuckle softly to herself as she finished observing her surroundings — his home. Instead of taking a seat, she came up to the kitchen, coming behind him.[break][break]

With her arms wrapping around his torso, Summer hummed as her cheek pressed against the flat expanse of his back. "Music would be nice. And some wine."[break][break]

She rested her chin where her cheek had been. "Shall I pour us a glass?"

Gunner could not help the smile that spread across his face when he felt Summer's arms around his torso and her warmth against his back. He tried glancing over his shoulder at her, but her shorter height made it difficult to see her even in the corner of his eye.[break][break]

"Sure, if you could," he replied regarding the wine. "You pick. The glasses are here," reaching up, he opened a cupboard to reveal several wine glasses, "and the corkscrew is in this drawer." He opened it, revealing several other useful kitchen tools.[break][break]

Reluctantly extricating himself from her embrace, Gunner planted a light kiss on Summer's cheek. "I'll get some music going."[break][break]

He left the kitchen and crossed over to the vintage record player. He kept it on a low bookshelf stuffed with records, which he now perused to find the perfect music to accompany their dinner. Selecting one, he set the vinyl onto the platter and positioned the tonearm onto the outermost groove. In moments, music began to fill the apartment.[break][break]

"I hope you like swing and jazz," Gunner said as he returned to the kitchen to resume cooking.

Even though Summer asked him not to laugh, Gunner couldn't help but crack a grin at her question. As the cast iron skillet heated on his stovetop, he sidled up to her, taking both the bottle of wine and the corkscrew from her hand.[break][break]

"Here, let me show you. It's simple." With the two arms of the device raised, he carefully twisted the screw into the cork until it had gone deep enough. Then he pressed down on both arms at the same time, popping the cork right out of the bottle's mouth.[break][break]

Gunner handed the wine back to Summer. "It ruins the cork, but I have a stopper around here somewhere if we don't finish the bottle tonight." He doubted that'd be the case, though.[break][break]

Then he turned back to the skillet, testing the heat by holding his palm a couple of inches above it.

Summer watched him, standing close as he popped the cork with a satisfying sound. When it was set aside, she took the bottle from him so she could pour them both enough to enjoy.[break][break]

"I'm sorry. I feel almost... useless," she admitted, setting the wine aside as she reached for her glass.[break][break]

Would he think lower of her for never doing things herself? Think she was a spoiled brat?[break][break]

While Summer felt self-conscious about her inability to cook or her unfamiliarity with common kitchen appliances, Gunner felt the same, but for the opposite reason. While she feared he saw her as spoiled, he feared she saw him as lesser because of his lower socioeconomic status.[break][break]

Inviting her over for dinner was a test, in some ways. If Summer disliked what she saw of his daily life, if she found herself bored by its simplicity or unimpressed by its humbleness, perhaps their relationship shouldn't continue despite their strong feelings for each other.[break][break]

But Gunner hoped that her affection for him was stronger than that.[break][break]

"I could teach you," he said before reaching for his own glass and taking a sip. "We could start with basic stuff like eggs and rice, not this. This would be like Cooking 201."

Gunner chuckled, too. "That's what I'm saying. Eggs and rice are 101."[break][break]

The skillet had reached a searing heat. Gunner began to work at last, pouring just enough oil to coat the bottom, then adding the lamb. The enticing sound of sizzling meat filled his apartment.[break][break]

Summer's next words triggered Gunner's internal alarms. He raised his gaze to meet hers, eyebrow cocked in confusion. "What do you mean, if something happened to you? Like if you lost Prescott Industries?"[break][break]

He ignored her compliment, too focused on whatever harm he imagined would befall his girlfriend.[break][break]

"Why would you find yourself in that position?" he pressed, keeping one eye on the cooking. The lamb would burn if he wasn't careful.

Gunner saw the way Summer started to wall up, her shoulders slouched defensively, and decided to let it go. The ease with which she mentioned losing her company — something she worked hard to run every single day — nagged at him, but he wasn't going to ruin a fun date night by pressing the subject.[break][break]

"If anything does happen, you have me," was all he said as he refocused his attention on cooking. His words were an attempt to reassure her, but a part of him wondered if he was truly up to the task. Their relationship was only a few months old, after all.[break][break]

He put the tray of vegetables into the oven to roast. At high heat, they wouldn't need long and should finish at the same time as the lamb chops.[break][break]

"How's the wine?" he asked, trying to move the conversation somewhere more comfortable.
