On a rocky perch within Granite Cave, Zev watched a small group of the League's Rangers pick their way down a narrow passageway. Between them, they carried precious cargo: medical supplies for humans and Pokémon alike who were fighting battles elsewhere.[break][break]

Supplies that could benefit Team Rocket if intercepted.[break][break]

Dressed in an all-black combat outfit and wearing a full-face mask, Zev glanced over at his partner for the job. "I'll drop down behind them to cut off their retreat with this," he said, showing the mysterious ore in his palm, "while you stop their advance with the sticky glob. We attack during the confusion."[break][break]

Curling his fingers around the ore, Zev stepped toward his Gengar. "Let's go, Smoke."[break][break]

In a wink, the two vanished using PHANTOM FORCE, reappearing behind an enormous stone pillar out of the Rangers' sight. Zev raised his hand and smashed the ore onto the ground. Immediately, the rocks shifted, forming a steep barrier across the entire width of the tunnel.

“Got it.” Barnaby agreed behind his own mask, his eyes sweeping over the small unit of LEAGUE officers. Probably a medical team, non-combative. But that didn’t deter Admin Bee from seizing this opportunity to stall enemy aid. Anything could be pivotal in clashes like this.[break][break]

Where Zev Harcourt disappeared into a wall of shadow, Barnaby’s GALLADE teleported him ahead of the group, behind a sharp curve in the tunnel. He waited patiently for them to approach; it was rather slow going, considering the size of their cargo. Zev had the timing down perfectly, though, and when he hurled the mysterious ore behind them, Barnaby lobbed several sticky globs at their front during the ensuing confusion.[break][break]

The viscous fluid coated their limbs, making it hard for them to react to the ambush.

The League personnel stumbled on themselves thanks to the sticky orb, dropping the heavy boxes of supplies. A torrent of confused yelling and swears erupted within the tunnel.[break][break]

Amidst the chaos, Zev's Gengar swooped down on them, freezing them in place with MEAN LOOK. A couple of them managed to release some Pokémon to fight back — a Vespiquen and a Blastoise.[break][break]

Both lunged at Smoke, seeking to push the Gengar back. The Vespiquen swiped at Smoke with AIR SLASH while the Blastoise followed up with a powerful HYDRO PUMP.[break][break]

Though the Ghost-type managed to dodge the first attack, the second threw him backwards, sending him tumbling through the air before he recovered some distance away.[break][break]

Unbeknownst to the cheering League, Bee and his Gallade had yet to join the fray.

Their ambush had gone off without a hitch. Now it was time to secure the goods while the LEAGUE officers were still caught off-guard. [break][break]

The sticky fluid had already begun to harden, locking their limbs in place. However, some of them had managed to release Pokémon before being completely incapacitated. They sprung toward Zev and his GENGAR, unaware of the GALLADE that was now racing toward the fray.[break][break]

It made sense to dispose of the VESPIQUEN first, who posed the biggest threat in Barnaby's estimation. A sharp whistle indicated for his GALLADE to slash at the insect with PSYCHO CUT - specifically, at it's wings. She didn't seen it coming and was quickly felled, sputtering in the rocky earth while hissing enraged buzzes.[break][break]

BLASTOISE, meanwhile, was biding its time and building up energy for FLASH CANNON, directing its attack toward GENGAR once again.

The Vespiquen crashed to the ground, no longer able to fly. In retaliation against Bee's Gallade, she thrashed out with FELL STINGER.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Zev's Gengar took the full force of the FLASH CANNON, flipping through the air before recovering a few yards away. When he righted himself, his massive grin had turned down into a frown.[break][break]

He countered with GIGA DRAIN, tendrils of shadow wrapping around the Water-type's legs and sucking out its life energy. Those same shadows led back to Smoke, restoring his health. The Blastoise's owner shouted in alarm, urging on her Pokémon to win.[break][break]

A futile attempt.

In the time it took to right himself, GALLADE was left open to VESPIQUEN’s attack. Her FELL STINGER pierced the Pokemon’s arms, which he had hastily brought up to try and block the blow. Blood leaked from the wound, running down the length of his forearms and dripping to the earth below.[break][break]

“Back!” Barnaby barked, knowing that the felled insect couldn’t do much at range given her crippled wings. GALLADE complied immediately, loosing himself from the large spine and retreating backwards a few feet. [break][break]

GALLADE had seen battle before and been wounded on more than one occasion; given this experience, he shook off the injury within seconds, adrenaline aiding in focusing his attention on success. Readying his next attack against VESPIQUEN, shadows grew around the blades on his arms until they swelled with a dark intensity (NIGHT SLASH).[break][break]

Then he shot forward to make the final blow.

While Bee's Gallade exchanged blows with the Vespiquen, the Blastoise retaliated against Zev's Gengar with DARK PULSE. The shadowy beam hit Smoke in the face, sending the Gengar flipping end over end through an alley wall. He returned moments later, phasing through the stone to bear down upon the turtle.[break][break]

Zev clicked his tongue in command. The fight had gone on for too long, as far as he was concerned.[break][break]

All of the plants in the alleyway, from a palm tree planted at one end of it to the weeds growing in the cracks between the asphalt, glowed with brilliant, green energy. Smoke inhaled, drawing all of it to himself, then sent the great pillar of energy skyward.[break][break]

BLOOM DOOM crashed down upon the Blastoise, piercing it straight down the middle, searing scales and claw and shell alike. All that remained when the light faded was a sizzling husk.

The stench of charred flesh filled the cavern around them. Barnaby barely spared a glance toward the fried BLASTOISE, though, and instead focused on finishing up his side of the battle.[break][break]

Seeing an opportunity to cinch his win, the admin lobbed a quick scatterbang at the enemy VESPIQUEN, temporarily blinding and disorienting her so that his GALLADE could deals its final blow without interruption.[break][break]

NIGHT SLASH at the ready, GALLADE rushed forward and pierced the insectoid Pokémon in the abdomen. Using his momentum, he then swung his arm upward, similarly slicing the VESPIQUEN nearly in half. [break][break]

She fell to the ground and silence pervaded the area.[break][break]

Only for a moment, though. Soon the restrained LEAGUE officers were howling in outrage at their loss.[break][break]

"I'll take this cargo back to the checkpoint. You take care of them." Barnaby instructed, already walking toward the supplies.

Zev nodded and turned toward the restrained League personnel. He did not recognize any of them, suggesting they were on lower tiers of the League's hierarchy.[break][break]

Still, they were the enemy. Their actions allowed the perverse machinations of the Hoennian government to continue.[break][break]

"Get rid of these," Zev told his Gengar as he pressed the key stone embedded into his wristwatch.[break][break]

Smoke transformed with mega evolution, becoming massive. The League officers screamed in terror as the Gengar's wide, grinning maw opened, then closed around them. Abruptly, their cries ceased as their lives snuffed out.[break][break]

Glancing back over at Bee, Zev asked, "Find anything good?"

Screams of terror filled the cavern before being abruptly cut off. Barnaby didn't even spare a glance back, focusing instead on the cargo they'd just acquisitioned.[break][break]

"Well, well." A high-pitched whistle fluttered through the admin's lips. "Poké Balls. Lots of them. Extra reinforcements, it looks like."[break][break]

Barnaby angled one of the supply bags so that Zev Harcourt could see the telltale red and white capsules within. [break][break]

"Not a bad haul at all."
