If Summer was able to think rationally, maybe she'd be able to see what he meant by that. She had been elected designated royalty and leader by the peasantry alongside Raziel Beckett. She knew what was going on out there.[break][break]

People were starving and dying. Every moment was a struggle to survive.[break][break]

But in her hormone and grief-stricken haze, a hurricane of emotions whirled through her all at once. Pain. Anger. Grief. Fury. Despair. Hatred.[break][break]

"Don't say that," she choked out, her voice quiet as she pushed herself from the bed, gripping the rails. Her eyes were narrowed, glaring daggers into him as she tried to stand up.[break][break]

Summer's legs were weak, wobbling as she found her footing. She ripped the nasal cannula off her face, the monitor starting to go off from her movement. Ding, ding, ding with her heart rate.[break][break]

"You can't say—" She reached for the chords, ripping them off the monitor so she could just move.

"It's the truth, Summer!" Gunner snapped back, meeting the full brunt of her fury with his own. "You've thought about it too, haven't you? How fucked up it would be to bring a child into this world? And when their parents aren't even talking?"[break][break]

But she seemed gripped by a frenzy of grief and rage, not hearing him as she struggled to rise from her hospital bed. Gunner knew better than to let her continue in case she hurt herself.[break][break]

Stepping into the room, he moved to stop her, grabbing her arms and forcing to sit back down if she would let him. "No, don't get up. Lie back down," he ordered.

Summer didn't want to hear him speak. Each word he said felt like another knife into the heart. In the matter of a month, she had lost her lover, a man she truly believed she could have had happiness with one day, and now her child.[break][break]

What else did Gunner want from her? Wasn't this enough? He already hated her. He already believed she was a monster. Wasn't this misery and suffering enough? Did he need to continue pushing the knives deeper into her bleeding heart?[break][break]

Her feet were stumbling, but she managed to stay upright. However, his figure was approaching her. Summer shook her head, glaring at him as he cleared the distance. "Don't come over here. Don't..."[break][break]

His touch was warm, the familiar feeling of his rough hands on her skin making her break. Those callouses, they must have been from training as a special agent. She always wondered why a paralegal would have such rough hands.[break][break]

"Don't touch me!" Summer shrieked, caving into herself as though she was hiding from him. Gunner was a threat to her now, in her eyes.[break][break]

Her whole body shook as she was wracked with sobs, clinging to the rail of the bed as she tried to pull her arm weakly away. "Don't touch me, please..." she sobbed.

Summer's sharp cry caused Gunner to jerk away from her as if she'd slapped him again. He took a step back from her and really saw her for the first time that day. Finally, he recognized her as the pitiful, broken woman he had abandoned.[break][break]

An insidious voice hissed in his head: "You did this."[break][break]

Gunner clenched his jaw and dropped his hands to his sides. "I'll get a nurse to help you back into bed," he said at length before turning on his heel to leave the room.[break][break]

As soon as he stepped into the hallway, he flagged down the nearest peasant who volunteered at the hospital. The nurse hurried into Summer's room moments afterward and rushed to her side.[break][break]

FOUR YEARS LATER

In an old pub near the defensive wall surrounding Circhester, Gunner stood over a pool table the city watch had converted into the "war table." It was the only surface big enough in a nearby building where they could spread out a map of the city. Coins, no longer being used for their original purpose, marked different locations throughout Circhester.[break][break]

Approaching footfalls caused Gunner to look up from the map. Expecting it to be one of the volunteers of the city watch, he was surprised to see Summer Atreides instead.[break][break]

Their relationship had become less strained simply due to the time that had passed since their arrival. He could stand being around her now and even speak with her, though only about work, and he preferred to make reports to Raziel Beckett as much as possible. But Summer took her responsibilities as the city's queen seriously, and Gunner would be foolish to leave her in the dark.[break][break]

Still, it felt uncomfortable to be alone in a room with her. "Summer, what a surprise. What brings you here?" he asked her.

Four years had passed. Summer had hit thirty, thirty-one now, to be exact. She would joke with the other Hoennians that they were starting to get old with each year that passed. Eris Halla was growing up, seventeen at that point. Though she had a sneaking suspicion in her teenage years, she was falling into those rebellious habits she knew all too well.[break][break]

Circhester had become a place she was determined to protect. After months of grief, Summer refocused herself on helping the people of Circhester. They had to rebuild. They needed food, supplies, materials. The attacks were still coming, and if they didn't have both their leaders, they'd be lost.[break][break]

She'd stop being selfish. It was the same mindset she had for her company back in Hoenn.[break][break]

A couple of years after her breakup with Gunner, she met a Galarian man in their forces. Liam. His appearance reminded her of someone back home — Cade Atreides. And he was equally as entrancing. It didn't take long for her to hit it off with Liam. Their relationship was still strong after two years, and he'd given her a family ring as a promise.[break][break]

It rested on her ring finger, reminding her of who she was there for.[break][break]

Approaching the old pub, Summer was given word that Gunner Graves was present. He seemed to work day and night without fail. He was stubborn like that.[break][break]

"Good evening," she said, rather than answering his question. Summer's gaze traveled across the map, a small frown across her lips. "I'm here for an update on the front."[break][break]

A pause.[break][break]

"And I wish to speak to you. As Summer and Gunner."

An update on the front counted as work, but Summer's desire for a more personal conversation gave Gunner pause. So he decided to address her former request first, even if it was only delaying the inevitable.[break][break]

"The breaches in the wall from the most recent attack have been repaired," he reported, pointing at two locations on the map. "Additionally we've reinforced the old stone at this southern location, since a lot of it has been eroded away by poison."[break][break]

Attacks from Dynamaxed Pokémon were regular occurrences, with no obvious pattern to them. Defensive measures included manning the wall at all times and keeping the power spot as clean as possible.[break][break]

"New recruits have joined the city watch since the attack — boys and girls who've just turned eighteen," Gunner continued. "Their training is going well, for the most part."[break][break]

He hated the thought of throwing them into battle at such a young age, but they had volunteered for the service. Who was he to turn down people who wanted to protect their home?[break][break]

His report complete, he fell silent and waited to see how Summer would broach her other topic of interest.

Summer had seen the breach in the wall. It was part of her duty to oversee the damages these enhanced Pokemon did to the city. She had led charge over one of the attacks against one of them as well.[break][break]

Still, even with good leadership, they had their losses and destruction. If only they could find CALYREX. There were rumors that it had passed. The last time it had come around, it looked even more sickly and frail.[break][break]

She began to wonder if the rumor was true.[break][break]

"We need the forces we can get... I still think they're so young though," she said with a worried sigh. But, if they wanted to fight back, she wasn't going to oppose them. They were able to make their own choices. And she didn't want an uprising on her hands, either.[break][break]

There was stillness in the room, silence, as he waited for her to continue. She contemplated where to begin. So, Summer decided to start bluntly.[break][break]

"Your feelings about me are quite obvious. I know you're uncomfortable around me. I still have my reservations. But, Gunner... we're fighting for the same cause. We need to have a serious discussion and put our past where it belongs. We need to work out our differences now so we can become more efficient. Razz can't be just your go to. I'm here too. And we're all in this together."[break][break]

"Whether we live or die."[break][break]

"I want an honest conversation. And I will begin by saying that I wish that things didn't end the way they did. And I'm sorry."

Summer was right, of course. Gunner was a person who tended to be mired by his past: the Kanto War and Team Rocket's villainy, the death of his ex-girlfriend, Mila's sudden disappearance, and now this rift between him and Summer. And he held grudges for a long, long time.[break][break]

But their situation in Circhester had changed so many things. The factional divide between the League and Team Rocket had fallen, discarded after their first shared wintertide feast.[break][break]

Many of their peers believed there was no more going home back to Hoenn, that Galar was their home now. Summer herself had fallen in love with a local. It was possible she considered the citizens her own people now.[break][break]

Gunner ran a hand through his ash blonde hair. He'd imagined many different ways this conversation could go, but he still felt unprepared to talk about it.[break][break]

"Okay," he finally said. "I'm also sorry. I let my prejudice and anger rule me. I was… I was a hateful person." He still was, but that hatred had turned inward. It was the reason he buried himself in his work — so he could forget all the decisions he regretted.[break][break]

His eyes remained on the map, unable to meet Summer's.[break][break]

"I wish things had gone differently, too."

An apology from both of them was a good start. Summer felt a bit of relief on her shoulders when he didn't grow hostile. Instead, it seemed like he was willing to give this a chance.[break][break]

"I am willing to forgive you. I've thought about those two days a lot. Perhaps I was reckless. Maybe I was a horrible mother for showing up on the battlefield."[break][break]

Some nights, she thought about what she could have changed. But then she realized, she wouldn't change anything. Because at that moment, she was content. Happy, or as happy as someone could be in the midst of a war.[break][break]

"I don't think we were right for each other. We held too big of a secret from each other. I thought about telling you about Rocket so many times, but I was afraid of how you'd react. I didn't want to lose you. I still did, in the end. But I was destroyed when I found out you were spying on me."[break][break]

Summer glanced away from him for a moment.[break][break]

"Did you start our relationship because of the HBIC? Or did you really love me?"

At least Summer was admitting her recklessness and thoughtlessness. Gunner still had no idea what had gone through her head at the time. Instead of joining an operation against hostile targets, she should have been at home. Perhaps then she wouldn't have lost the baby.[break][break]

But time had lessened his frustration over that situation. And wishing it had gone differently was not going to change the events that had already taken place: getting stuck in this poisoned land, the breakup, the miscarriage — any of it.[break][break]

"I agree," Gunner said. "We weren't right for each other."[break][break]

He paused when she asked about his old work and exhaled, feeling weary.[break][break]

"I did reach out to you at first because of the HBIC," he admitted. Finally, he had given voice to a truth he had never explicitly confirmed but always carried with him. "It was my job to spy on you and Lion Heart Trading Co."[break][break]

Another pause. Rough fingers idly fidgeted with a coin from the map.[break][break]

"But I did love you. Or I thought I loved you." He shrugged. "I loved the person I thought you were. But we were clearly both wrong about each other. We didn't know each other at all, did we?"

Summer was quiet, processing the information. Her suspicions weren't confirmed at the breakup, but now they were. But she did need to correct one thing.[break][break]

"You knew the real me. Or, most of me. You just didn't know my dark side, like I didn't know yours. You knew the Summer that not everyone gets to know. So, I think you loved the right part of me. Though you may not agree with my way of thinking."[break][break]

She finally looked back at him, wishing that he'd have some courage to look up and meet her gaze.[break][break]

"I really did love you. None of that was a lie. All of the time we spent together, the beach, everything. It was some of the best moments in my life. And when we found out about the baby, I thought you were going to leave me because you didn't want to be a father. But you stayed. And I loved you more after that."[break][break]

Summer leaned back in the chair. "Did you want it? The baby?"

When Gunner did look up at Summer, his expression carried a hint of skepticism, though it lacked any real antagonism.[break][break]

"The right part of you?" he echoed. "The part of you that you wanted to be, maybe. But it wasn't the whole you, just like I wasn't the whole me while I was with you. And if you can't love someone for all that they are, is it really love?"[break][break]

It was a question he'd asked himself many times, during many lonely nights. He knew his answer, and it made him miss home even more.[break][break]

Mention of the baby brought Gunner's gaze back to the map. He'd hoped she would never ask, so that he wouldn't have to tell her the truth he'd once confessed to GIDEON GRAVES.[break][break]

But there they were, her question hanging between them. The air grew tense as his silence dragged on. Then, finally, he looked into her eyes again and said softly, regretfully, "No. I tried my hardest to want it, but I just couldn't."

Summer didn't want to admit he was right. But...[break][break]

"No, you're right." She picked up one of the spare coins on the table, taking in into her hands. It was losing its color, dulling out by time.[break][break]

Summer was afraid of his answer. And it stung her heart, like alcohol on a fresh wound. The wounds she had from their fights and her hospital stay had heal, but the scars were still there.[break][break]

"Why didn't you tell me? We could have work something out. I would have rather both of us find a solution than neither of us be happy," she insisted, setting it back on the table.[break][break]

Unable to help it, she laughed. It wasn't a joyful laugh. It was bitter, at herself. At them. "We're idiots. Things could have gone so much better if we had just talked to one another." Instead of pretending everything was okay.

"Because I thought I wanted a family. All my life, I wanted to get married and have kids," Gunner replied. "But when it finally happened — the kids part, anyway — I thought my hesitation was temporary. I thought it was normal to be afraid."[break][break]

He returned the coin he'd been fiddling with to a stack of coins representing the southern watch station.[break][break]

"But the feeling of dread and apprehension didn't go away. And it was easier to escape into work than confront the reason for that. It was easier than talking to you."[break][break]

Back then, the thought of returning to Summer had felt like willingly returning to a cage. Perhaps the bars had been gilded, but it was a cage nonetheless. And now that he'd admitted to it, he realized he'd been nothing but a coward.[break][break]

"We were idiots," Gunner agreed, the bitterness audible in his tone, too.
