She had proven herself devoted to the cause of protecting Circhester. In fact, she had shown everyone just how capable she could be, not just in battle but as a leader. Compared to leading a whole city during wartime, leading a single company back in Hoenn was a piece of cake in comparison.[break][break]

If they ever managed to find a way home, there was no doubt in Gunner's mind she'd excel at being the CEO her company needed her to be.[break][break]

And anyway, she was engaged to marry another man now. Whatever the future had in store, Gunner no longer had to worry about he and Summer returning to old habits.[break][break]

So he nodded. "That's fine with me." Then, after a beat, he added, "You are happier with Liam than you ever were with me, by the way. I can see it when you two are together. I'm glad for you, Summer."[break][break]

A genuine smile broke across her face, noticeably bright in the dark and dull setting that was Circhester. Any tension or fear of rejection to the idea was eased off her shoulders. It felt like weights were lifted, and she felt more at ease now. "I'm glad. Thank you, Gunner."[break][break]

Though, as he mentioned Liam, Summer's face grew red with a bit of shyness and a hint of embarrassment. The smile grew more sheepish as her finger began to twist the ring on her finger absentmindedly.[break][break]

"Oh, ah... thank you. He's a really good man. I just hope that he protects himself out there," she said softly, her gaze dropping to the coins on the table.[break][break]

Though when she met Gunner's gaze again, she caught his smile. It was the same smile he used to give her, even if it was small. She met it with her own, giggling at herself.[break][break]

"Okay. I'm... I'm going to get going. I have some more work to do. I will see you around? I mean— I'll talk to you soon. Goodbye, Gunner. Have a good night."

The shyness that overtook Summer's expression was strange and rare. Gunner himself had never seen her blush like that when they were together — yet another indication that this Liam was a better man for her than Gunner could have ever been.[break][break]

He made no comment on her hope for Liam's safety, however, and merely inclined his head as she bade him farewell.[break][break]

"Yes, we'll talk soon. Have a good rest of your day, Summer."[break][break]

She left him to his map of war and his brooding thoughts. But at least his chest felt lighter, as if a weight had been lifted from it, no matter how small.
