Ultra Megalopolis - Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon

A RUINED CITY IN ULTRA SPACE. It is unclear whether this is a different universe's Ultra Megalopolis or smaller colony. Regardless, it is a dark city with intermittent sections of flickering, artificial light... Large, black prism-like skyscrapers loom above flat black streets. Much ruin has fallen here, but you get the sense that you're not alone...

Stepping through the rift at Sky Pillar, Zev found himself within the shadowy embrace of Lesser Megalopolis once again. His gaze traveled up the unfamiliar, prism-like buildings. Blue eyes followed them toward a towering structure in the distance.[break][break]

A structure that, without warning, flashed light.[break][break]

Crazed screaming and the stampede of countless feet filled the air at once, causing Zev to tense. The noise did not seem close; it had started a block away and grew fainter with every passing moment. The accursed horde of Megalopolans was retreating.[break][break]

The light of the tower blinked out. All noises ceased. Zev frowned, unwilling to relax with such dangers nearby.[break][break]

"Did you all hear that?" he asked his companions, his voice low, cautious.[break][break]

Turning, he looked at BARNABY FINCH — who had agreed to explore the city with him again — and Marza Volchitsa. Zev had briefed her on what they knew before arriving, but no words could truly capture the city's alienness.[break][break]

"It sounded like the Megalopolans we encountered before. A different group, most likely."

The blinding light nearly burned her eyes on entry. An agitated grumble slipped free, but she reminded herself that this should at least be a farcry from the dreadful border expeditions she did with fern delaney and jayden cross multiple times. So, this was the place that Fern managed to screw up somehow or something, she didn't bother pretending to understand how any of this fucking worked.

The light was paired with screams and the scramble of figures she didn't immediately recognize as Megalopolans. The hell was this place, anyways? The light blinked out and silence quickly followed. She let out a breath, not realizing the tension of it had been held in her chest. The promise of a fight faded away with grudging disappointment. Soon.

"They're in a frenzy." Zev Harcourt had been brief in his explanations, which was par for the course (not that she's much better). The light flashed once more and the madness awakened once again, it was undeniable then. "Guess the light is making them that way." She couldn't help but wonder, if they lingered, would the light twist and contort them too? Would they scream into the burn of it, soothed only by the darkness? She wasn't sure she wantedf to find out. "We should move."

Though Barnaby wasn't thrilled about going back to the zombie-filled hellscape that was Lesser Megalopolis, he'd promised to help Zev Harcourt uncover the mysteries of the darkened realm. They'd barely scratched the surface of what information could be found here on their first expedition, after all.[break][break]

Their target for exploration today was the largest building in the area – a huge, protruding tower whose precipice periodically flashed with light. Had it done that on their last visit?[break][break]

"This way, to the left," Barnaby suggested, already heading toward an adjacent side street. "The screams faded in the opposite direction. We might be able to simply skirt around them and make it to the tower undetected."[break][break]

That was the hope, anyway.

Zev could not agree more with his companions. He followed Barnaby into the side street, allowing the shadows of the nearby buildings to engulf him. Dead, empty crystals littered the ground; Zev was careful not to disturb them in case the sound drew unwanted attention.[break][break]

Eventually, the group made their way to the base of the large structure. A short set of stairs led up to the main doors, some of which had been ripped open by some unknown force. Unfamiliar script above the doors labeled the tower, but Zev could not read it.[break][break]

Beyond the doors was simply darkness.[break][break]

"It doesn't look like there's any light inside," he said, pulling a Pokéball off his belt. Opening it, he released his Illumina Chandelure. The ghost's body emitted a soft, eerie glow, enhanced by his flames.[break][break]

Chandelure went inside first. Zev followed and glanced around, his eyes seeking exits, hiding spots, and ambush points.[break][break]

"It seems clear," he called over his shoulder after a moment. But he knew better than to relax his guard. The darkness in the tower was oppressive, making it difficult to tell just how large the space inside truly was.

Zev Harcourt 's Illumina Chandelure lit up the space within the tower, a place of yawning darkness and gaping crevices. It felt like there were eyes watching them from every direction. It certainly wasn't safe, but there was a thrill in that. Marza was itching for a fight that wasn't ghosts. Even if this place did give her the creeps.

There were no stairs that she could see. Black stone crumbled under her boots as she crossed the room to try the elevator. The lever lifted with a flimsy creak. Nothing. No burr of electricity or lights. "So, now what?" She grumbled.

Something screeched in the darkness, far away but still entirely too close. They weren't alone in here.

Considering this was practically a scene from some budget horror movie, Barnaby was obligated to continue his instruction by saying, "Let's split up. We'll cover more ground that way."[break][break]

He released his own Illumina Pokémon and began searching the nearby rooms for anything of note. The first few off the main lobby were innocuous, containing defunct office equipment and layers upon layers of dust.[break][break]

The next room was larger with a taller ceiling, perhaps used as a conference space that could fit multiple teams or departments. Gesturing for his STARMIE to go first, its light revealed...[break][break]

Zev had no qualms with splitting up. After all, the events of horror movies never happened to the people who murdered others in real life.[break][break]

Unfortunately, he and his Chandelure did not find anything of note in the rooms they checked, only more dust and debris. Dulled Z-crystals crunched under his boots. Frustrated, Zev returned to the main lobby.[break][break]

Only then did he hear Bee call out to him and Marza.[break][break]

"What did you find?" Zev asked as he joined the admin. But as soon as his Chandelure joined Bee's Starmie, doubling the illumination in the room, he saw the answer to his own question.[break][break]

Like a horror movie, the eerie light revealed frantic etchings carved into the walls of this room. The strokes formed some kind of winged creature with a horned head and spiked tail. The drawing showed it attacking a city; the prism-like shapes and tall tower suggested it was this city, too.[break][break]

"Is that a Pokémon?" Zev asked, stepping into the room for a closer look. He himself had never seen anything like it before.

Their split up was brief before they were called back by BARNABY FINCH . As far as she could see there was nothing of interest except for vacant rooms and black stone. "Huh." She muttered, brows furrowing as they studied the scrawling etchings carved into the walls. Clearly something had lost their mind in here and she could only assume it was due to the creature depicted there. "Never seen anything like it."

Clearly something had happened here, but it didn't take a genius to figure that out. Especially considering the frenzied inhabitants and the strangeness of the environment itself. Either way, she was fairly certain she'd rather not find that pokemon here.

Crazed drawings spanned the length of the large space. Blackened marks covered every perceivable surface from top to bottom, even spilling onto the floor and the ceiling — inescapable to those within the room. It was as if the huge creature depicted at its center was about to engulf them as well.[break][break]

"Yes, I believe it is." He answered Zev Harcourt.[break][break]

Barnaby touched a curious hand to the wall as he observed what was being depicted there — or what he thought was being depicted. It was hard to tell. Most of it was so unfamiliar. Alien, even.[break][break]

A being of pure energy descending from on high, bright and blinding. Immaculately luminescent against the dark prisms of the city.[break][break]

"Is it... absorbing the light?" His brows furrowed in thought, the suggestion left the admin's lips as a quiet musing. [break][break]

Zev shook his head. "It's impossible to tell. These scratchings make no sense. Move back a bit — I'm going to take a picture of it."[break][break]

He took out his phone and, while he backed up from the wall, launched the camera app to take a photo. As he moved across the debris-strewn floor, his foot bumped against something solid.[break][break]

Zev expected a quick glance down to reveal some stone or overturned furniture. But no, it was an arm. Instinct took over at once. He scrambled away, turning on his phone's flashlight to reveal the rest of the body.[break][break]

Lying on its back on the floor was the corpse of a Megalopolan. However, only the razor-sharp, triangular teeth housed in a mouth twisted by a scream was the only indication of its species. The rest of it seemed carved out of a dull, black material.[break][break]

In an instant, Zev knew what it was. An apprehension filled him, tensing his muscles for the start of a fight. He crouched beside the body, bringing the beam of the flashlight closer. Reaching out with his free hand, he brushed his fingers against the cold crystal.[break][break]

Just to be sure, he summoned his crystals with a thought. They covered only his hand, spreading over his skin in a matter of seconds.[break][break]

They were the same as what had overtaken the corpse.

The body crept out from the shadows, a still-frame horrorshow encased in stone like a fucked up chrysalis. She could claim to have never seen anything like it before, but that was hardly the first since entering this realm. The scrawled madness on the walls, the panic of frenzied bodies under the relentless beam of light, in a way it all made sense in this place.

Her panic was brief, dashed by the body's stillness. It wasn't currently a threat and experience had made her quick to steel up even with the fear lacing her veins. Though that panic felt like nothing in comparison to the shock she felt when Zev's hand began to form the same black crystal as that which covered the body. She stumbled backward, much to her own shame. Though, the last fucking thing on her mind was considering that this was anything but what it seemed.

Zev Harcourt's rapid movements immediately put Barnaby on edge. Instinctively, he reacted by sidestepping to the left, thus placing his back to the wall and giving him time to scan the room for whatever threat had provoked the Beast.[break][break]

The moment passed as quickly as it came. Soon enough, Zev was crouched above the reason for his surprise — a Megalopolan corpse. Ugly and ravaged as the rest, yet distinctly different. Worse, somehow.[break][break]

"The hell..?" Barnaby muttered under his breath, feeling his blood run cold as he set eyes upon the grotesque thing.[break][break]

Black crystals covered it almost completely. They were not unlike the ones that composed much of his SHADOW STEELIX, a Pokémon that had been corrupted by NECROZMA during the bloody battle at Sootopolis almost a year ago now...[break][break]

Seeing those same crystals bloom onto Zev's skin caused a sharp dread to well in Barnaby's gut. [break][break]

"This is one of your new... abilities, Zev?" He asked, unease apparent in his voice. Though this was his first time witnessing it, the admin recalled Cillian Quinn's report on this unsettling transfer of power.[break][break]

BARNABY FINCH remembered Chu-e Choi. He didn't want Zev Harcourt to experience the same fate.

The shock and fear in his companion's voices did not faze Zev. Though they both should have read Cillian Quinn's report following the removal of Necrozma's influence from Chu-e Choi — an assumption Bee confirmed with his question — the report had not contained information about what had happened to Zev himself in the process. At the time, neither he nor Cillian knew what he could do.[break][break]

But weeks had passed since then, enough time for the hitman to practice those abilities. Slowly, he stood and turned to his fellow Rockets.[break][break]

"It's not spreading," Zev said first to Marza. The crystals covering his hand vanished back into his skin, revealing pale, unmarred flesh. "I have my own from before we set foot here. I can cover myself with this armor, but it's not the same as that."[break][break]

He gestured to the corpse.[break][break]

"It's like this body is made out of crystal instead," he added, frowning.[break][break]

But, unable to understand why or how that happened, he merely turned away from the Megalopolan to resume his previous task. He raised his phone to the etchings on the wall and snapped a few photos.[break][break]
