Getting to Mauville hadn’t been to hard. At least not as hard as it had in the past. All it took was a ferry ride to Slatesport and riding Tempest the rest of the way. It seemed to cut down the time it took to get from Slatesport and Mauville and before to long he was in Mauville.

He decided to walk the rest of the way after he entered the city having come to a stop right after he entered the city. He wanted the Manectric to be not be to tired since he would probably send her out to battle. Couldn’t have her tiring out in the middle of a battle.

Reaching Mauville’s gym he pushed his way inside. Josh was someone he had met before. Had given him riding lessons. It had made it a bit easier to talk to him on the Amigo app. And it had been on that app that they had planned all this out. A battle between just the two of them. Not an official one but a battle between two equals, more or less.

Since he was unsure if the gym leader was busy or not he didn’t try and call out to him. Besides he had faith that Tempest would alert him when he showed up. Make a sound to let him know they were no longer alone.[break] Josh Devlin

When Shinobu had arrived at Mauville Racing Grounds, Josh waved him around to the property's east side gate, the two having already agreed to the meet and battle online. Tempest caught the Gym Leader's attention. the young, spiky-haired celebrity seated on his own Manectric. "Slick ride, Shinobu," he complimented, Saber approaching Tempest on his own accord, without a tactile command from the rider. "I'll take you to the Racing Grounds' main battle court. Booked it specifically for us, since today's not a day I'm taking challenges."

With that, Josh led his friend across Sector 1 to the Main Sector, where the SPLIT OVAL and the facility's battle courts were. Craggro the Arcanine was working with ACE SHEEKE in the background, trying to get the fire-type some much-needed exercise. "Glad to see you here for the first time!" the Master of Faster said with a smile as he guided Shinobu to his Trainer's Box. "Name your format. I'll have staff bring me a Pokémon team perfect for the format."

Tempest took him over to where Josh was and he grinned at the gym leader. ”Thanks she was a gift,” he said as he stroked the top of Tempest head. Listening to what he had to say he nodded. Sounded like a good plan. It would also mean he wouldn’t have to feel pressed for time. Not that he was expecting a super long battle.

He would follow Josh to where the main battle court was. ”Its good to be here. It can be hard to find time around my schedule to battles. My days off are usually spent shopping to restock supplies at the restaurant,” he explained as they came to a stop.

”Doubles I want to get some training in on a few of my newer additions to my team,” he explained as he got off Tempest. He hoped that would be okay. It wasn’t a battle format he was to familiar with himself. But as a trainer he needed to get use to different battles styles. After all not everyone fought fair when it came to Pokémon battles.[break] Josh Devlin

Josh was briefly distracted by Craggro letting out a lot of steam as Ace guided him around the track at... not a blistering pace, but a quick clip, considering the Arcanine's condition. "Alright, doubles it is. I'll grab a team that should be a good match. Be right back." With that, he and his Manectric zoomed off, gathering some of his Pokémon from other Sectors of the sprawling property. He returned with three more Poké Balls on his belt, inserting them into their appropriate slots on the Trainer's Box after taking his position.

What better opponents for Shin than the Eeveelution brigade? From within two of Josh's three Poké Balls emerged a Shiny Sylveon and an Espeon, the Gym Leader covering his mouth when he realized he hadn't taken their saddles off. "Whoops," he said to himself, realizing his third Pokémon was still wearing theirs, as well. "Ready when you are, Shinobu!" Josh called across the field. Though the Trainer's Boxes did not rise due to their being no stage manager operating the machinery, the battle was just as serious as a real Gym Challenge. The Espeon and blue Sylveon, both gazing into the foe's eyes, looked ready to pounce at whatever came out of the other's Poké Balls.

Thankfully the gym leader was fine with doubles. And he listened to him talk about getting a team together and he barely had time to nod before the older male was taking off. The wait wasn’t long and soon enough he had returned. He heard what sounded like Pokémon being released and realized he should release his own.

Josh’s first comment went unnoticed as he focused on making sure he grabbed the first pokeball. Tempest knowing she was up had already moved into position saving him the trouble of having to tell her to get into position. He would release Metagross from its pokeball to join the Manectric.

From what the gym leader said he figured he would have the first move. Which was fine with him. He didn’t mind making the first move. He would just have to be sure not to give too much away when it came to his strategy. Not that he had much of one at the moment. Usually preferring to think on his feet and come up with a strategy as he battled, always finding it hard to think of a strategy before the battle started.

After he determined which Pokémon Josh had send out he would direct them to attack. He would direct Manectric to use Quick Attack on the Espeon and Meteor Mash on the Sylveon.[break] Josh Devlin

Josh knew what he was in for with Tempest. Even if they didn't have the speed training the Gym Leader's did, Manectric were just plain quick. He could follow the QUICK ATTACK, but Janus couldn't. The Espeon was blindsided by the attack mid-ALLY SWITCH. Josh hadn't planned on Janus taking both attacks. It left Pinky unharmed, but the blitzkrieg from Tempest on one side, followed by the flattening power behind the Metagross' METEOR MASH, left the psychic-type's purple fur blemished by red and blue stains.

Thankful for the save, Pinky aggressively pointed her feelers at the Metagross, MYSTICAL FIRE flying from them and curving toward the Steel-type with a heat-seeking effect.

He had meant for his attacks to hit both. But he supposed he would take what he could get. It was a bit of surprise when Josh ordered Pinky to use mystic fire. ”Didn’t know Sylveon could learn that move,” he stated already knowing of what hr could do. It was risky and meant putting Metagross in the line of fire, literally, but if he pulled it off he could get some damage on Pinky.

Knowing the risk Shin directed the Metagross to use Zen Headbutt to power through the flames and attack Pinky. His hope was that the flames would mask the attack enough that the feline Pokémon couldn’t dodge. Though he knew that the gym leaders Espeon could just use ally switch again. He wanted to avoid that though which was why he wanted to try and stop the Espeon from being able to that.

Which is why he directed Tempest to use Thunder Fang on the Espeon. He knew that move was a risk as well. Since it had a change of missing. But if it didn’t and the attack hit he was hoping to paralyze the Espeon to slow it down.[break] Josh Devlin

The THUNDER FANG has no need to stiffen the Espeon's muscles; with Janus already winded from having two powerful attacks slam into him, it took only a scratch from the Manectric's incisors to fell the psychic-type. Had it not been for his efforts, Pinky would have dropped to the ZEN HEADBUTT as well. Though the psychic attack pinned him to the ground, it also left the steel-type in range of a point-blank blaze. The blue fairy-type wrapped her feelers around a narrow part of the Metagross before their tips came alight with more MYSTICAL FIRE, hoping to maximize contact with the metallic foe and overheat it.

With Janus in a heap near the Manectric, Josh withdrew him for Inky, a Glaceon that was quick to dash toward Tempest. A blustering wind swirled around the Glaceon, looking to FREEZE-DRY Shin's Pokémon and leave it with more chapped skin than it had ever previously experienced.

While Metagross had been able to power through the first mystic fire he was felled to the second mystic fire. Barely letting his attention stray from Tempest and the Glaceon that had replaced Janus he returned the fainted Metagross back to his pokeball before sending out Toxin, his Toxicroak.

Tempest couldn’t completely avoid the freeze-dry but was lucky to avoid getting temporarily frozen from the move. Shaking of the attack Tempest would use Fire Fang against the Glaceon hoping to make it either flinch or receive a burn from the attack.

And while Tempest went for the Glaceon, Toxin used Astonish against the Sylveon hoping that if Fire Fang didn’t make Inky flinch or receive a burn that Astonish would make Pinky flinch. If either of those moves did as intended it would buy them a bit of time. [break] Josh Devlin

Inky hissed at the flames dancing from the Manectric's serrated teeth, piercing her icy skin and creating a layer of painful melt around the bite wound. The fire attack exposed sensitive skin under a tough ice crystal, leaving the Eeveelution badly BURNED. The staunch Pinky stood her ground against the Toxicroak, though she was a bit scared of the poison-type on the inside.

The Shiny Eeveelution had a narty surprise up her sleeve. Flinging her feelers toward the Toxicroak, her red eyes glowed, attempting to force her way into the amphibian's mind and shut its brain down with a brutal PSYSHOCK. Understanding that the Manectric's specialty was electricity by virtue of having been around Josh's before, the ice-type's skin brilliantly reflected the sun's rays. a sudden gust of wind blowing behind him. Josh wanted Shin to believe it was a Blizzard he was preparing for; instead; the sheen of MIRROR COAT surrounded him. If the trainer didn't see it coming, any electric attack would be deflected back at the Manectric with double the force!

Fighting someone who was use to fighting gym battles was hard. He was three years out of practice for a battle like that. His strategies would need improvement when he battle more. Because Josh seemed to have moves that could patch a punch for his team no matter what he did.

As Pinky used psyshock hitting Toxin with it Shin directed the dual type to use the last of its energy to fire mud bomb at the Sylveon and it just managed to do that before fainting. He returned the Toxicroak back to his pokeball before redirecting his attention to Tempest.

If Pinky was hit with the mud bomb he doubted it would’ve taken the Sylveon out of commission. Which would mean that Tempest was up against two Pokémon. He hadn’t wanted to use this move since it hit everything in its path. And he personally wasn’t fond of the move but if he could knock out at least one of the Pokémon with it he wouldn’t be dealing with two Pokémon versus Tempest.

Resisting the urge to sigh he directed Tempest to use discharge. Having her orders the electric type sent out a wave of electricity.[break] Josh Devlin

Josh knew Manectric better than perhaps anyone else in Hoenn. If it were any other electric-type Pokémon, his plan would not have been possible. The MUD BOMB brought Pinky to her knees, Tempest's DISCHARGE finishing the job. As much as it pained Josh to see his Sylveon fall in battle, it paved the way for his killer tactic to give him a huge upper hand in the end.

"Checkmate, Shin."

The icy sheen comprising Inky's MIRROR COAT absorbed part of the Manectric's DISCHARGE, reflecting it back with double the speed and strength! In the event that wasn't enough to sap the electric-type of its strength, the Glaceon would attempt to freeze his foe in place with a vicious gust of ICY WIND!
