It was near the end of the rush, which meant at the moment there were more people leaving than there were placing orders. Soon he would be content to take his break and allow one of his fellow chefs to take over his station. At the moment, though, he was happier to do some cooking, even if he hadn’t taken a break since opening the restaurant for the day.

Still, with it becoming more lax with the rush ending, he was dealing more with cutting up ingredients than the actual cooking. Despite his lack of sight, cutting ingredients didn’t pose much of a problem, so he often chose to do it when things weren’t so busy, as long as his immediate attention wasn’t needed.

He was just about ready to start mincing some onions when he was told of an order for some Unovan cuisine. How curious? Especially considering he was told to surprise the customer. However, the most surprising thing was that the customer was apparently from Castelia, his own hometown.

How curious indeed!

Was this someone he knew? Or was it simply a coincidence to be serving someone from his old hometown?

Without saying anything, he left one of the other chefs working under him to mince the onions as he got to work on the order. As a former Unovan, it made the most sense for him to prepare the woman’s order. Though not before ensuring the waiter went to get her drink order, which would consist of soft drinks, water, homemade sweet tea, or homemade lemonade.

The dish he chose was a traditional one from his homeland. One that had required him to pay shipping fees since it required some of the ingredients to be imported. But in the end, it was always worth it. It's worth it to feed someone a true Unovan dish.

Couldn’t say he didn’t understand. Wasn’t that part of the reason he had barely taken off. He liked to keep himself busy. Not for any other reason than the fact he likes the work he does though. Even now it was hard to not fall back on being a workaholic. Having people like his boyfriend and his family helped him in that regard though.

“If I take on the gym circuit you’ll be the first to know,” he promised.

Though the question was when would that happen. He still wasn’t comfortable leaving the restaurant for too long. And usually days off were spent buying groceries to restock the restaurant, doing inventory, or doing something with his boyfriend. Though he supposed one of his employees could take care of the first two things.

“I didn’t really find your brother hard to deal with, then again one of my main interests is cooking,” he mused, thinking over the last time he had interacted with Ace. It had only been the one time but he hadn’t minded the younger male's company.

Speaking of it, it hadn’t taken a genius to figure out Ace was trying to set him up with his brother. He actually hadn’t noticed originally what was happening, too preoccupied with other stuff. It was only after he had thought back on the interaction that he realized it.

It was kind of amusing if one thought about it. “Ah yes, it did seem like your brother was trying to play Cupid at the time. Definitely something my sister would’ve done, though I admit she would’ve been much less subtle, probably making it seem I could walk on water or something like that.”

As Kee spoke, he nodded. “I hope so. She has somehow been getting in the attic though. Still not sure how she’s doing it. Anyway, there are some rotten floorboards up there. Someone’s supposed to come and deal with it but until that happens, I’d prefer none of my Pokémon be up there,” he told the older male. He was pretty sure there had been a leak up there that his aunt had managed to fix, though no one had been up there since.

“Oh yeah, sure. I can borrow my aunt's tools. She won’t mind,” he said, unaware that Kee had been wondering about tools himself.

At the mention of the box, he nodded before taking it from his boyfriend. Curious about why there would be an unmarked box, he opened it. What he found was a box full of memories. Stuff that had been taken from his house back in Unova. Both of his houses.

“It’s stuff from back when I lived in Unova. My aunt said she had gone to get stuff from there but forgot where she put it,” he admitted as he picked up an old picture. While he couldn’t see it anymore from the texture of the picture frame, he knew it was of him and his sister. Taken in a time before his sister had gotten so sick.

He put it back before glancing at Kee. “I’ll have to look through it later. No telling what my aunt deemed as important enough to bring back.”

At the mention of the braille books, he was relieved. “That's good, would much rather not have to go about replacing them,” he said, knowing they had been pretty expensive.[break] Keenan Toral

At the question, he nodded. There wasn't much of a reason for a verbal response in his opinion. Not much of a reason to continue a conversation that would just go on and on about the same things. Besides, he felt it was more of a rhetorical question than anything since he had already all but confirmed that he had been the one to make the treats.

"It's no problem, really," he said in response to her gratitude. In fact, it should be him who thanked her for trying his confections.

At the compliment, his face heated up a bit in embarrassment, but a small smile still graced his lips. "Thanks, though I'm sure with practice, you could become just as good as me. On that note, if there ever comes a time you need pointers, I do offer cooking lessons outside of restaurant hours."

The idea of introducing himself had completely slipped his mind. It was a good thing the customer was paying attention to stuff like that.

"It's a pleasure to meet you. My name's Shinobu, however, if you find my name too much of a mouthful, I also go by Shin," he said and was just about to offer his hand as a handshake when Tempest bumped against him.

A signal that she was doing something he was unaware of. Since she wasn't growling or anything, he assumed it had something to do with their introduction. Perhaps she already had her own hand out.

"I'm afraid if you're trying to shake my hand, I'm blind," he commented as he absently patted Tempest.[break] Thea Naito

He had been waiting for a long time when he heard what sounded like footsteps approaching quickly. Were they running? he asked himself. Before he could dwell on it too much, a cry sounded from in front of him. Well, it seemed he had caught the attention of a Pokémon, and from the sound of her, she was a Wigglytuff, which meant she probably had an owner nearby.

His prediction, although not much of one, was confirmed when he heard the sound of a woman's voice scolding her Pokémon before running off.

"Oh, don't worry about it. It says a lot about my cooking, I hope, if it can attract a Pokémon," he said with a small chuckle, absentmindedly putting a calming hand on Tempest when he felt her tense against his leg. The Manectric instantly calmed down, allowing him to turn his attention back to the woman and her Pokémon.

As she commented on the smell of the sweets, a warm swell of pride filled him. "Thank you. I baked these as a way to get more people interested in trying out my restaurant, Kasumi's Eatery. Of course, we also serve entrees," he explained to the other teenager. If she was paying attention, she might notice that he didn't look directly at her as he spoke, instead looking slightly off to the side.

"Anyway, these are free samples, so feel free to grab a few for you and your Pokémon. If you like them and want to buy some, I have another table right there," he said, gesturing towards another table behind him. It was clear that the Manectric was also keeping an eye on this table.[break] Thea Naito

He kept that in mind. Of course, even with how well the restaurant was doing, he felt he was a long way from making the dream a reality. So he would keep such talk between him and Shalin for now. It was best not to bring it up to Keenan at the moment. That is, if he decided to use it, you see.

Seeing no point in saying anything in response to her comment on Sygna suits, he simply nodded.

Her laugh caught him off guard a bit. He wasn't really sure what was so funny, but luckily she soon explained things. "Maybe you could record it one day and watch it frame by frame?" he suggested. Aside from that, he wasn't sure how she could watch it in slow motion.

As she spoke, he nodded. Yes, he supposed that was one analogy they could use. Using it with less power could work. He hadn't thought of that before. He should have thought of it.

"You got that, Hades? Try using Dragon Pulse with less power. Try it with 75 percent power," he ordered, turning towards the Dragon Pokémon.

Heeding his trainer's orders, Hades released Dragon Pulse with less power.

From the sound, it seemed like there was still a bit of an imbalance. "Hmmm... try again, but with a little less. Let's say 72 percent," he suggested, waiting for the Dragon type to do as asked. This time, when he tried it, it went the way it was supposed to.

"I think we've got it. I'll have to remember what we covered and slowly add more and more power behind the move when you can handle it," he said, striking the Zweilous as a job well done before turning his attention to the green-haired girl. "Thanks. I would still be puzzling over how to get that move right if it weren't for you."[break] Shalin Nariya

The first name was unfamiliar to him, but that didn't keep him from being slightly confused. Before he could think too much on it, his boyfriend was talking about Josh Devlin, and that right there was why he was a bit confused. If what he heard was true, the older male was a ranger, and yet he himself was still a gym leader.

"I don't know the first guy, but Josh gave me riding lessons. I think, outside of being a gym leader, he's also a ranger. That's what I've heard anyway. I can't remember if he told me or if it was something I overheard. Anyway, aside from getting riding lessons from him, I did battle against him. It wasn't a gym battle though, and I didn't win. I did manage to knock out one of his Pokémon first though," he told the older male. Perhaps next time he battled against Josh, it really would be a gym battle.

"I almost met Hideo Kino while I was shopping. Funnily enough, I actually met him the same day I met your brother. It was right before I gave him cooking lessons."

Meeting Hideo had been interesting. Outside of old people who had lost their sight due to old age, he had never met another blind person, especially not someone who had been born blind.

As he mentioned Yuuki liking the taste of battle or the attention, he couldn't help but let out an amused chuckle. "Probably both. She can be pretty needy, and she's not opposed to showing off either."

Soon enough, it was decided they should move on, and he began to lead the way through the house. As he walked, he would explain the situation to the older male.

Oh, he knew that. Despite not having known her long, he knew his aunt loved him dearly and that she was willing to do anything for him. That aside, the mention of a Lucario reminded him of something.

"Oh, you have a Lucario. I don't have a Lucario, but I have a Riolu. Hmmm, I'm not really sure where she's at though," he admitted. He hoped she wasn't in the attic again. Speaking of which, how was she getting in there?

Mentally shaking himself to clear his mind, he got to work. Unlike his boyfriend, who could read the labels, he had to open each box he came to. One box had bathroom stuff, like his towel rack, which would need to be reassembled, and a few towels. In order to bring more business to his restaurant, he had decided to set up a bake sale. Sometimes people got so hung up on one restaurant that they were reluctant to try another. He had met people like that, people afraid that the new restaurant they tried wouldn't compare to other restaurants they had grown used to. To alleviate that, he had whipped up a bake sale that advertised free samples of any baked goods.

Finishing the last batch of cookies, he set them aside to cool off. While he waited, he made note of everything he had made. He had made stuff ranging from cookies to fudge. Fudge had been the hardest to get right. Getting the consistency right was hard even for a person who could see.

Checking the fudge one last time, he was relieved to find that it was at the right consistency. Though if they weren't, he supposed he could always give them to Mikael. That's what he had done with the first batch of cookies he had burnt, knowing the older male wouldn't care if they were just a little too crispy.

Thinking of cookies made him think of the cookies he had left to cool. Upon checking on them, he was pleased to notice that they had cooled down enough to be moved off of the baking sheet and onto a plate. Now they could finish setting up without worry of having to wait for something to finish baking.

With the help of a few coworkers, he took everything to the entrance of the department store Lilycove was known for and set up. People who came in and out of the building for some shopping were bound to see them. Hopefully, it would get people interested in seeing what he had, especially when they realized free samples were involved.

Considering that there was also a chance of drawing bad people to try and rob from him, there were precautions in place. His Manectric, who worked as his guide dog, was sitting next to the table, ready to chase off anyone who thought it wise to try something.[break] Thea Naito

He had not given much thought to being able to see again, even if only for a bit. The last time was when someone had proposed that he get surgery to regain his sight, something he hadn't taken kindly to. He had come to terms with his blindness. And yet, the chance to actually see what his boyfriend Keenan Toral looked like was hard to pass up.

"I never really thought about doing that. It's been three years since I lost my sight, and I had come to terms with blindness. But being able to watch what's going on in a battle would be nice," he said, deciding not to mention the main reason he would consider something like that. Just the thought made his face start to heat up in embarrassment.

Mentally shaking himself, he continued to speak. "Of course, if I went that route, I wouldn't stay linked to my sygna suit when it comes to my career. I actually didn't learn to cook until I lost my sight, so it would mean relearning the way I did things," he explained, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.

And that had been the main problem when someone had mentioned him getting surgery to fix his blindness. He would have to relearn how to do things with his job. There was also the fact that it wasn't his eyes that were the problem, but the part of the brain that relayed information to his eyes.

As she went on to explain that she had decided to sync with Flygon so she could sit on its wing, he couldn't help but be amused. "My parents were pretty lax with me growing up, but they would have had a heart attack if I even suggested doing what you do," he said with a chuckle.

Considering the question, he pondered the best way to answer. "Every time Hades uses the move, it seems to implode. Not being able to see, I'm not sure what the problem is. I do know that Dragon Pulse isn't supposed to cause damage to the user," he explained. Perhaps he was trying to put too much power into the move or something.

Though he knew he had to work on his own problem, he couldn't help but be curious about Shalin's problem. Perhaps one day he would be able to picture what she was trying to do.[break] Shalin Nariya

"While it’s true my restaurant stays pretty busy, I usually stay in the kitchen unless we’re understaffed, then I’ll help wait tables as well. So, all the people I’ve come to know over the year are people I’ve met outside of a restaurant setting," he explained, briefly thinking over all the people he had met.

As the older male explained what had made him so grateful to get noticed by a Shaymin, a small smile graced his lips. "All things to be grateful for," he agreed before continuing. "Speaking of gyms, who gave you your first gym badge?" he asked curiously. Having obtained six badges back in Unova, he couldn’t help but be curious about the gyms here.

As the conversation changed, Yuuki showed up. At the praise from his boyfriend, his face heated up with embarrassment and he awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. "Yes, that’s right. Being an ice type, Yuuki came in handy when battling against that Sandslash. I think she liked her time in the spotlight," he said with a chuckle.

Realizing they should get started, he said as much and simply started walking when the older male told him to take the lead. Which, considering this was the first time the older male had been to his house, was a given.

"I’m thinking we start with the guest room. Well, I say guest room, but it’s being used mostly for storage. I think a lot of those boxes carry my braille books. At least I’m hoping they’re there. My aunt labeled the boxes, but…" he trailed off.

His aunt had used a marker and had forgotten to have them also labeled in braille, so aside from rifling through every box, he wouldn’t know what the boxes held.[break] Keenan Toral

Seemed like he would need to start saving up. Being a business owner, he was fairly well off, but it was still good to manage his money and make sure he had enough to spend on extravagant items he didn't necessarily need.

The whole bond thing wouldn't be much of a problem. He was pretty close to all of his Pokémon. But the question was, who was he closest to? If you asked him, he would probably say it was a toss-up between Venus and Hades. The Serperior had, after all, been through so much with him and was usually the one who would remind him to eat when he got caught up doing something, practically shoving the food at him. If Hades was the father type among his Pokémon, then Venus was the mother type.

"I love all of my Pokémon equally, but if it's a close bond, I would have to say either Venus, my Serperior, or Hades. They've been with me the longest, with Venus being the one I started my journey with. Yuuki, my Alolan Vulpix, I got around a year ago. She's needy though. All my others I received more recently," he explained.

At the mention of his Zweilous, he smiled. "Yeah, we're close. I caught him before a really dark time in my life. Him and Venus helped me through it. While I pushed people away, they were always there."

While he was more than happy to continue talking about his Pokémon companions, he couldn't help but be a bit curious about her own bond with her Pokémon. "How about you? How did you get so close with Sandy?" he asked her, his head turned towards her.

As she mentioned that what they did was up to him, he frowned, his expression thoughtful. That was a bit tough. But he supposed there was one thing they could do.

"I would like to work on Hades' Dragon Pulse. He seems to lack control with that move," he admitted, resting his hand on the Zweilous' side.[break] Shalin Nariya

Kee always seemed so upbeat. Sure, he tried to be positive, but at times it could be hard. He was sure Kee knew him well enough to know he still thought about his sister and how sometimes it still hurt. So, part of him envied the older male for always having such an upbeat attitude.

Listening to what he had to say, he was reminded that Palintine's Day was just around the corner. They supposedly said it was another one run by an event that gave out prizes when you gave out a certain amount of Palintines.

“Oh yeah, another one is just around the corner, isn't it? My aunt is going to help me send out Valentines. I didn't take part last year since I didn't really know anyone,” he explained.

“It's great you were able to catch one though. I hear Shaymin are drawn to gratitude, so you must have been thankful for something to draw one's attention.”

While he didn't mind the Shaymin being on his head, he did know someone who would. And as if thinking of her had summoned her, Yuuki came from the other room and bounded over to them, brushing up against Shin's leg.

“And I bet you remember this one,” he said as he picked up the Alolan Vulpix. “She's still as possessive as always.”

Seriously, he hoped that evolving her would tone that down a bit. It all would just depend on when Yuuki was ready to evolve. Speaking of ready…

“I suppose we should get to cleaning. For when we need a break, I made some hot meat sandwiches. They're under a heating lamp to keep them warm,” he told his boyfriend as he put Yuuki back down.[break] Keenan Toral
