Here again, laid bare, is the difference between a cage-fed princess and a king of the wild. Beneath the ground, vibrations ricochet back and forth. Vortigern’s movements are wild, frantic. This is a beast in its natural habitat, a creature made for precisely this task.[break][break]
His mates roar. They roar their support for their mate. They roar to throw off this princess of their kind.[break][break]
“Look out.” Navy says, only for nothing to happen right away. Rumbling builds. Vortigern approaches. He still seems far away, like he is set to emerge on the other side of the field.[break][break]
The ground beneath Elise’s Garchomp seems to explode. Being on her guard gives the princess’s dragon time to react, but the window is small. Vortigern’s jaws are opened wide. He means to take a bite out of this would-be ruler.

Since the large Garchomp was still underground, Elise’s Garchomp feels the vibrations from how wild the Garchomp was in comparison to the female that was raised at the royal draciary. When the Dewford gym leader gives the royal ambassador a warning that she should have her Garchomp look out for Vortigern, that would give the female Garchomp some time to react to where the larger Garchomp would assault her.[break][break]

There’s nothing happening when the sheriff said his warning though the rumbling from under the ground is obvious. Selece is on her guard when the large land shark dragon comes out from the ground with his jaws open to bite onto her. She moves quickly to the side when the female Garchomp looks down to the would be biter and makes an attempt to try to close her distance with a well-timed Dragon Claw from her sharp talons.

Pain is an effective deterrent for most creatures. Pain tells them that something is wrong, affords them a natural punishment system.[break][break]
What, then, does someone do with a creature who simply doesn’t care about pain? The dragon claw is well-timed. It would be well-timed even if it struck a creature chained to common sense. Vortigern bleeds. Raw red blood drips down his chest, another scar worn like a medal. Another toll demanded by the aggressor.[break][break]
Selece bleeds, too. Rough skin draws out blood, makes a mess of her claw. Vortigern is her senior in this: pain is an old friend. His nerves fire a response that works him into an outrage. His folly and his greatest strength is this: every fight, no matter how minor, is treated like the most important battle of his life. Every battle is a test, a challenge. He puts everything on the line, and so he makes a red mess of every battle.[break][break]
Whether this was a gift of the sync stone, or a blessing he gave to Navy, none can say. The tamer and his dragon are bound together inexorably until one dies by a tether on their souls. Navy looks down, sees how both of his hands are gripping the steel rail on the edge of the platform. He lost himself in a dragon’s dream for a fraction of a moment. He saw himself as Vortigern, rising up, feeling the pain, rampaging against that pain.[break][break]
There is a lesson here, and he must put on his human skin to tell it to his challenger.[break][break]
“You--- you gotta understand, Elise.” He huffs out warm air, wiping sweat from his brow. “That’s how Rocket fights, you get it? They don’t care if they’re gonna get hurt. They just wanna win.” A small pause as Vortigern’s aggression heightens even further. Rage defines his sygna suit.[break][break]
“You really wanna fight people who think like that?”

In front of the wild raised dragon that was larger than her, the female Garchomp who was raised like a princess bled from the rough skin scraping at her arm. She ignores the pain and tries to keep going in the middle of their fight, maybe Selece is starting to learn how to be like Vortigern was as an apex predator herself. Bracing herself against the other large dragon’s Outrage, her body takes the hits and slams coming from the other Garchomp’s own strength. [break][break]

In the middle of it all, Selece ends up bleeding onto the brown earth of the field as she moves away and tries to slash at the other dragon with another Dragon Claw once the Outrage ends.[break][break]

The royal ambassador watches from the railing with the sheriff though she knows that her dragon was doing all she can to keep herself in the battle. When Navy turns to her with his mention on Rockets, her mind flashes back to all of the fights she had with Rockets so far…including her last match with that Rocket lady in her mask and disguise.[break][break]

“No, I do not.” She answered Navy’s question with a pang of guilt. So many of her battles could have been won if she had learned to battle better. “I can’t fight against people like that who are only there to win. I'd fight against people like you who are there to guide me and mentor me on how to be a better battler.”

“Those are the people you’re gonna fight, Elise.” Sadness sings through his words. She is nothing but an innocent child, bound by duty. Defend the people, they tell her. How is she to defend her people from monsters without becoming monstrous herself?[break][break]
The irony, of course, is that he finds himself liking many of these monsters. In another life, they would be his kin. Together, they could raise a riot. Have a fun fight. Tear one another apart the way Selece and Vortigern tear one another apart, outrage meeting the edge of a dragon claw.[break][break]
“There’ll be peace, one day. ‘Til then, you’re gonna have to fight those kinds of people. Gotta be ready to defend yourself against people who’ll destroy themselves just to fight you. Understand that?”

Both of the two dragons, one that was smaller than the other Garcchomp clashes with her Dragon Claw against Vortigern’s Outrage. The attack makes the female dragon bleed more, but she takes it. [break][break]

When the ambassador looks at Navy, his tone sounded sad when he tells her his response to her answer. In the eyes of someone who never grew up in being instilled with duty to her people like her father wanted her to, she comes off as a sheltered, naive, and innocent princess who had the misfortune to be given a duty to protect her people.[break][break]

While Remy had been in the region longer than she had, he taught her important things during his time in office. On the news, the Prime Minister keeps spewing his propaganda in order to make her and Remiel look bad in front of the public.[break][break]

She listens to Navy talk with her that she has to be ready for the people that will destroy themselves to fight her and the Galarian royal gives him a nod. “I understand now. I’m born into royalty, so…I must defend my people from those kinds that will destroy themselves to hurt them as well.” In spite of her sheltered impression, Elise tries talking like she’s embracing what it means to accept her duty of being a Galarian princess for the Galarian people.

“Yeah.” She’s picking up on this quickly. A shadow slips across the battlefield, after having made his way up to the PC. What it has done there is not, technically speaking, legal. All to serve a purpose, all for the point he’s trying to make.[break][break]
“Defend your people. Don’t hate the people you gotta fight. Don’t seek the fight. Do what you can from behind the lines. When you have no choice, show ‘em your compassion isn’t weakness. And always remember, Elise.”[break][break]
Vortigern continues his mad rampage, meeting every blow, realizing that the Garchomp he is fighting grows faster with every attack. Such is a dragon’s spirit.[break][break]
“You’re never fighting alone.” Two of her pokeballs, collected from a PC, slide onto the table before her.

The words that the sheriff tells her is something that she’ll follow in future faction conflicts. After her injury by the masked Rocket lady, she would try to help those who are injured for the next time she’ll be on the battlefield. “I will promise you that. Like you’ve told me at the hospital, Hoenn has a lot of swords and…I will do everything I can to make sure those swords are still fighting with treating their injuries.” She gives the gym leader a nod when she sees a shadow sneak around the battlefield. [break][break]

When Vortigern met every rake across the rough skin that Selece tries to do, the female Garchomp keeps on the faster assault with her Dragon Claw in hopes that she would do enough damage to the large dragon.[break][break]

The shadow comes back with two Pokeballs, one which was the familiar Moon Ball that held her ghostly partner Pokemon, retrieved from her PC and as Navy spoke, Elise understood that he didn’t want her to fight alone. “Thank you, I’m sure that my dragon won’t be fighting by her lonesome as well.” The ambassador watches the two dragons fight as she responds to the man.

“Oh, is that right?” Navy’s voice is knowing. Technically, if she threw out those Pokemon, it would be against League regulation. She’d be disqualified. Luckily for her, he doesn’t care any more for the League’s regulations than he does their red tape – not here, not in the moment of truth.[break][break]
Vortigern’s outrage at last ends. He huffs, falling into the backfoot. Rage gives way to white noise, confusion. The angry dragon strikes at shadows which are not even truly there. A king stands alone atop the mountain, that is his truth. That does not have to be Elise’s truth, not her own Garchomp’s truth.[break][break]
He thrashes about, hurting himself, unable to even see her in the mist that is his mind. Bloodlust is a potent weapon, but violent delights offer nothing but violent ends.[break][break]
“Well, how ‘bout you finish this, then?”

From the railing next to the Dewford gym leader, she could see that Vortigern had gotten confused from his rampage and he wanted her to finish this battle off. Elise trusts Navy that he’ll let her send out one of her other Pokemon in his challenge to help her battered Garchomp who was now bleeding on her body. [break][break]

“It’s your time to help now.” She’ll take one Pokeball off the table and press the button.[break][break]

As the Pokeball’s red light shoots down to the ground where her Garchomp sees it, a form of the pink and cream colored bunny appears. The female Audino perks her ears up when she comes over to the female Garchomp with a smile.[break][break]

“Patch her up with Life Dew, Framme.” The Galarian princess calls her order to the Audino and Framme showers both herself and the female Garchomp with healing water. Selece feels the Life Dew soothe her pain and she nods to the Audino with a grateful nod.[break][break]

Her talons were ready to finish this battle as the female Garchomp uses her speed to slash at the bigger male Garchomp with a timed Dragon Claw, a proud roar coming from the then bloodied princess as she’s rearing to get it done.

In the end, Vortigern is overwhelmed. Navy hopes that his Garchomp learns the lesson here for him as well, but this is Elise’s victory. The females stand, their jets igniting at once. Only a sharp whistle and the intervention of both Shuwen and Hattori prevents disaster.[break][break]
In the presence of their mate’s sparring partner and the one Pokemon he respects, the lone survivor of Groudon alongside himself, they demure. None of them want that battle. They know discretion is the better part of valor, even if their mate doesn’t.[break][break]
“Well…guess that’s that, then.” The sheriff shakes his head. “You’ve won, and I hope you’ve learned something about yourself, too. Here, come on.” Stepping off the platform, he waves her to follow him to a quiet corner of the battlefield.[break][break]

The princess that was raised in the royal draciary has her victory over the large Garchomp though Vortigern hits himself in confusion. Selece sees that the mates of Vortigern attempt to intervene and they were stopped by the gym leader’s other Pokemon. Now, both her and the Audino that helped her accompany the Galarian ambassador when she steps off the platform with Navy. “I learned something about myself from our battle, thank you.” Elise gives the sheriff a nod as they’d make their way to a quiet place in the battlefield.[break][break]

With lots of messages written from Navy’s past challengers, some were words of advice that they would give to other people. The ambassador takes the badge given to her by Navy and she’ll nod to him when he tells her to write something to anyone that come after her. “I will. It is some words that I have taken heed from my father when I’ve felt down or guilt-ridden by everything that happened in my country.”[break][break]
