Without having to worry about waking up in time for the bracket to start, Josh could sleep in. He was refreshed after the grueling, back-to-back days of gauntlets of twelve matches. That was too much! He didn't even arrive at the venue until the middle of the bracket reveal, hearing accomplished names like Michael Navidson , CIAN MAHER , lam logan , kyle lopez , and Andrea Vaneau making the top cut. Josh wished he could have been there with them, but alas, he was not. One of the few Hoenn Gym Leaders to not make the bracket.

On the other hand, Josh could show up to side events and clean house! While it wouldn't come with the huge payouts a fantastic main event finish would, he would still be able to make a little extra money, and of course, have fun with the small tournaments. He and seven others were called for the Mauville Leader's first flight of the day. Standing across from him and his rejuvenated Zeraora was Diana Cavendish . "Hi there! Gym Leader Devlin, but please, call me Josh!" he introduced himself.

Showing up, she stood in the battling area, her ALTARIA at the ready. Her fingers scratched at her blue feathers until she noticed that her opponent approached.

"Hello. I'm Diana. May the best trainer win," she said with an extended hand.

"You took the words right out of my mouth, Diana," Josh replied with a laugh. "Let's make this a close one." Deep down, though, he didn't want it to be close; he would prefer to pad his paycheck from the main event. He could really use a vacation to Sinnoh. He owed Andrea a thrilling dragon dive from the one of the highest mountains in the world. A dive that would result in g-forces that would get even his adrenaline shooting through his whole body.

When the starting horn sounded, Raikiri set the pace of the match at blistering, a burst of AGILITY turning him into a comet as he circled the arena's outer bounds. Once he had built up enough speed, he would swerve sharply, leaping and BOUNCING toward the Altaria.

[attr="class","diana"]Though the ZERAORA was quick, the ALTARIA kept a sharp eye on her opponent.

As it built up speed, she puffed up the down along her body, using COTTON GUARD as a defensive mechanism to pad her vitals. The BOUNCE came, and she took flight, charging up into the sky before diving down to her opponent with a SKY ATTACK.

The SKY ATTACK from above used Raikiri's upward momentum against him, the feline stunned and unable to stand after Cadbury's crushing reversal. Josh rolled his eyes when he saw the green, bouncing numerals on his VITAL GEAR, an indicator of the Altaria's elevated defenses. A simple Quick Attack would no longer be an option, even if he could stand.

Stuck on his back, the Zeraora's four paws flailed about embarrassingly. All he could do to fend off Diana's Pokémon was shoot a volley of ELECTRO BALLS from his paws before rolling onto one side in an effort to get to his feet. It was becoming increasingly clear to Josh that he had to end this match quickly. The longer it went on, the more likely Diana was to walk away with the win.

[attr="class","diana"]Cadbury was able to knock her foe back onto its back, leaving him exposed from her attack. However, it wasn't long until he began to fight back, sending ELECTRO BALLS in the dragon's direction.

Though the electricity caught static on her feathers, she managed to avoid most of the barrage, sweeping down and charging a MOONBLAST directly at its exposed belly.

The MOONBLAST bodied Raikiri, the Zeraora letting out a squeal Josh had never heard from the mythical thundercat before. He was getting brutalized in this match. Now would be the perfect time for a Z-Move, but he lacked the strength to use it. If he could find a window for the Zeraora to recover, his signature attack would be a great way to turn the match around.

The only way to do that was to buy time. Raikiri sprung to his feet, running AGILITY-powered circles around Cadbury to try to confuse the cloud-winged dragon. Josh crossed his fingers; even played perfectly from this point, a bitter loss was likely.

[attr="class","diana"]The MOONBLAST was effective as her opponent cried out from the attack. Again, after he was able to recover, AGILITY was used to try and confuse the dragon-type.

This time, it affected Cadbury, dizzying her and making her next attack, a DRAGON BREATH unable to land properly.

There was still time in the game.

The dizzying speed left Raikiri's fur free of nasty DRAGON BREATH, the purple fire seemingly parted around the displaced air surrounding the Zeraora. Even the Gym Leader's eyes grew heavy trying to follow his Pokémon's location as he zipped back and forth.

Josh raised his Z-GLOVE above his head, both the back of it and the QUICKINIUM-Z crystal hidden beneath the feline's fur gleaming a brilliant yellow. In a split second, Raikiri disappeared, appearing in the arena's opposite corner. A sonic boom rumbled through the tournament grounds, paw and claw slicing toward the Altaria at incomprehensible speeds in the brief moments of the Zeraora's HYPERSONIC PLASMA CHARGE. Even if the dragon could withstand that, a line of white lightning bolts followed, striking across the path the Z-Move's wielder had ran!

[attr="class","diana"]It almost felt a bit unfair to unleash a Z-move in a battle where she had no advantage to something like that. But, regardless, the battle wasn't over.

Even as Cadbury was hit with the charge, she was dazed briefly before standing her ground once more.

"Let's go, girl. You still have a chance."

Another COTTON GUARD was used to boost her defenses, the ALTARIA SINGING to lull her enemy into a sense of calm. Then she charnged forward to attack the ZERAORA with another SKY ATTACK.

Josh had to loudly shout over the SINGING to try to keep Raikiri awake. Even so, the song dulled his reflexes some, giving the chance for the Altaria to brace for the QUICK ATTACK to come once he snapped out ot it. With him being at the end of his rope, the Zeraora's only chance to win would be to stop the SKY ATTACK before it could happen.

Time was a concern, too. The final seconds of the match were ticking down. He only had one chance to land the final blow. Were he to whiff, the match would almost certainly come down to a judge decision, and it was one he doubted he could win. He had to end it now. Before the clock read zeroes.

It was time to see if the defenses she had built came in handy.

She managed to take the QUICK ATTACK somewhat well, before charging one last MOONBLAST to hopefully end her opponent.

The MOONBLAST caused Raikiri to keel over, but it was clear that the blow would not count, being loosed well after the clock displayed zeroes. With the initial ruling on the court being that Raikiri's attack did strike in time, tension was high as the judges returned from the sideline.

"After review, the ruling on the court has changed. Zeraora's attack did not touch Altaria before the clock reached zero. Diana Cavendish is the winner."

Josh was furious. He had watched the replay on the big screen over and over while the judges deliberated. It was simply too close to call, and the judges were only supposed to overturn rulings on the court when there was clear and conclusive evidence. It was way too close to call in his eyes. Without even waving goodbye to Diana, the Gym Leader left looking disgusted.
