After defeating the Elite Four, Josh had promised Navy a match to help prepare him for the championship against the Emergent, kyle lopez . It was a match where he would be at a severe disadvantage, as he would have to overcome the legendary Pokémon Entei... and he could not use his own legendary Pokémon to do it. Not Raikiri, not Zaborg, not Hylda... not any of his Paradox Pokémon, either. A true Champion could fell a god without using a god himself. The Top Champion had done it himself to get to that seat. It was only right that the Mauville Gym Leader had to do so, too.

Today would not be that day, though. Surrounding Josh were three electric Pokémon. The racer was seated on Raikiri's back as he waved to one of his best friends that helped him get through some of his toughest times. Little would he ever imagine that the "practice" match would be his final ticket toward the championship bout. To his right was Saber, the wolf's saddle occupied by a Shiny Zeraora that skilfully held the Manectric's reins almost as well as Josh himself did.

"Navy," Josh sighed after waving a second time. "I had asked you for a match to help prepare for this day back before you ever became a Gym Leader. And now, we are staring down each other in front of thousands of people. I applied for the open seat, too, and I understand why I was declined. It was because your performance at Dewford. You're a true war hero. A hero all of Hoenn needs." He slid off his most trusted steed, his Z-GLOVE glowing yellow as though Raikiri could go hypersonic at any moment. "And I have recognized how similar we are now. I am a different type of hero. One that Mauville relies on every day." Though he wore his Sygna Suit, a racing suit wrought in the motifs of a Manectric, he would not be fighting with Saber.

"Though I have been with Saber for fourteen years, Raikiri and I can do things no one else can do. He's no Raikou, but he can run almost as fast as one. Saber is no Raikou, but as long as I'm wearing this suit, he's just as fast as one." The callout could have been perceived as negative, but the Manectric seemed thrilled to hear it. "I got what I wanted. I wanted to befriend and hop on the fastest Pokémon on land. And you know what? If Saber and Raikiri can match that speed... what's the point?"

The challenger shook his head. "But enough dwelling in the past. That's not why we're here. Navy, the last time we talked to each other, I understood I was far from worthy of the title of Champion. But a lot has changed since then. I'm not the same person I was when we spoke of Eris Halla in your office. I'm not the same person you spoke with when we were in the hospital. And Navy? We won't have a second battle here. It's only going to take one." Raikiri let out a loud, reverberating purr that perhaps Navy could have felt from clear across the battle court.

Like a warlord of antiquity, Navy stands in silence. Gunmetal glints in his eyes, showing no hint of what thoughts lay behind. This is Josh’s moment. Any fool who’s watched the old movies knows what the job of an Elite 4 member is in the ideal world the sheriff wishes to create. He’s a gatekeeper, the final stepping stone before the apex of the world.[break][break]
Although a full holster of pokeballs sits at his hip, only one sits at his side. Shuwen, the Fighting Master’s two surging fists, readies himself for battle. Raikiri is his natural enemy, an electric monster that turns the shapeless power of water against him. Any victory against such a foe will prove pyrrhic, painful, but Shuwen is long past the point of caring. Burn scars from a rampaging Walking Wake play across his face, testament to his struggles.[break][break]
“Then you’re gonna have to put your money where your mouth is.” He plays his role well, walking across the pitch, Shuwen at his side. Above them, the crowd at Ever Grande draw in a breath. The battle is about to start. In this time of war, battles are rarely fought for sport. Tournaments and matches like Josh’s are precious, battles of peace that merely play at war.[break][break]
“It takes more than talk to be a hero.” A man who doesn’t think he qualifies says. “Let’s make this interesting. Shuwen and Raikiri. No one else. Just the two of them, winner take all.”[break][break]
Shuwen falls into his battle stance, understanding the battle is about to start.

Shuwen's battle scars showed how much brutal combat the Urshifu had been a part of; if there was one water Pokémon that could defeat Raikiri, it was him. He couldn't hold a thing back. "You don't think I know that?" Josh scowled. "I wouldn't have a match between us any other way. Our two best Pokémon, just like you asked for in the application." Beneath his guise, he was simply excited to see what happened when legendary Pokémon like Raikiri and Shuwen collided. The Infinity Energy readings would almost assuredly be off the charts, and give him a true idea what wielding one in the war would be like. Even as a courier and a messenger, combat with a legendary Pokémon would be unavoidable.

As the judge raised the green flags signaling the start of the match, it only took a split second for the Zeraora to run circles around the edges of the battle court, building up blistering speed and AGILITY much like a Raikou was capable of. It was a tactic Josh had employed during his Gym matches, but never on this great of a scale. Sparks and dust trailed as the feline's speed continued to climb. If there was one fighting-type that could see through the illusory speed, though, it was Shuwen.

There is always a pattern. Patterns are anathema to speed. Once a warrior’s eyes pick up on the pattern, their mind begins making its calculations. A human mind under pressure can make a genius of a fool or a fool of a genius. Pokemon follow the same principle. His expression stays the same stern, stoic grimace as always. Black eyes follow Raikiri’s momentum.[break][break]
He takes a leaf from his brother school, the single strike style. One fist is all he needs. Though it is no wicked blow, none with the eyes to see can deny the close combat power of Shuwen’s single strike. One fist, thrown with pinpoint precision, along Raikiri’s vector. It is a warrior’s hello, a request to treat this seriously. It is a blow that would put a Tauros on its back, given as the match’s first real strike.[break][break]
“And a whole crowd of folks to watch, hero.” The Elite smiles. “You’ve sure grown up since the meteor thing.”

Seeing through the illusion of speed was expected for a Pokémon of Shuwen's caliber. The water-laden fist socked the feline's side, hurling him all the way across the battle court by using the attacker's momentum against him. It was a brutal first blow, but not one the big cat couldn't recover from. Collisions at the speed of a race car had toughened him up, the Zeraora far more used to giant impacts than his species had the right to be.

Raikiri was one to capitalize on that distance; after a struggle to get to his feet, he got back up to speed, running circles around Shuwen. This time, though, he would remain at a distance from the Urshifu. As his speed grew higher and higher, a flurry of ELECTRO BALLS went flying from the big hunter's whiskers and faceplate, converging on the water-type. Amplified by the Zeraora's incredible speed, they were truly a force to be reckoned with.

"No kidding," Josh exhaled. "I've found that after all this time, it's not Raikou I've truly desired. It's just the speed he can put on. And now, I have not one, not two, but three ways to match or exceed that. I have heard some rumors about the Giant Chasm and Area Zero, though. Rumors related to him. When you have the time, I'd like to investigate them with you."

Shuwen smiles. Raikiri does not disappoint. While the humans have their pageantry, he rushes forward. Urshifu are creatures made for these contests of strength. Their kind exist for battle, to uphold ancient traditions and keep them alive into the modern day alongside humanity.[break][break]
Theirs is an existence meant for war.[break][break]
“ORAAAAAAA!” He screams, punching the electro balls out of the air. A protective barrier shrouds his fists. With no ranged options to speak of, Shuwen must advance, close the gap, force the matter to escalate to a contest of strength. Step by step, he advances, even as he feels his fur stand on end from the electric blast. It could have been much worse.[break][break]
“Sure you wanna talk ‘bout that here?” His eyes shift to the thousands looking on. “You know I’m always down for an adventure.” He’d met Josh on one such adventure, after all. “Remember that Snorlax we pulled off the tracks?”

Josh gasped when he saw the PROTECTIVE fists dissipate the high speed electric attack. Only a few Pokémon had the reflexes to react to an attack so fast, so strong, and coming from so many different directions. It was as though Shuwen was seeing Raikiri in slow motion, goading the thundercat into action.

The Gym Leader had learned that in a battle of speed, the longer the match went, the less likely he was to win. Speed was an advantage that had to be pressed early in order to cross the finish line without running out of gas. A high-performance Pokémon like a Zeraora was liable to run itself out of fuel quickly, from the sheer exertion his dashing attacks took.

Growling and purring loudly, Raikiri circled Shuwen with great speed, as though he was going to repeat the same ranged attack. The sound of screeching paws ablaze from the extreme friction of an about face would be the only warning the Urshifu would get, the thundercat leaping toward him with PLASMA PAWS outstretched.

Josh had completely forgotten about the Snorlax trouble. He had forgotten how they had met, only that they had been great friends for a long time. Friends that understood each other, and understood their place in the world. Navy, a Warrior. A Hero. Josh, a Cavalier. A Messenger. Both had important roles to fill in the war effort. "Has it already been so long?" Josh asked, being quiet about the Area Zero plans when prompted.

"Adventure is what gets me pumped," Josh added, interrupted by the loud sound of mythical Pokémon's attacks clashing with one another. "I love being a Gym Leader, but I also like going out in the field. I'm a Ranger, too, remember?" He paused for a few seconds to let it sink in. "It's how I've managed to Mega Evolve so many Pokémon. Isaac Merlo helped me obtain my Absolite in the Abandoned Waterway near Pyre. You helped me Mega Evolve Snacker in the Water Temple. And Eva Morales helped me Mega Evolve Pazuzu in the Palace of Winds in the mountains near the Great Desert." They were all extremely perilous places, but the thrill of adventure and the treasures he would procure within were priceless.

"Maybe I'll find another Mega Stone down there. Or Kora..."

Plasma surges on the edge of electrified fists. Rapid strikes batter against a solid stone wall. Each strike is like a lightning bolt hitting Shuwen, again and again and again. The bear is caught in the middle of a terrible storm, one that would throw down most other Pokemon. Among Navy’s cabal of companions, only Vortigern and Shuwen could hope to weather this storm.[break][break]
“Pweh.” Shuwen coughs blood. Something inside is broken from the damage, but it is nothing a trip to a Pokemon Center can’t heal. When he agreed to be Navy’s champion on the field of battle, he understood what was coming: conflict, and lots of it. Endless battle, endless grindstones, an eternity of war.[break][break]
He welcomes it, welcomes Raikiri with open arms.[break][break]
“ORAAAAAAAAAAAAA!” Instead of buckling beneath the blows, Shuwen returns them. Surging strikes rage like the sea against the terrible matchup. Decisive blows turn into hellish fist bumps. Their fists catch one another, creating a spectacle of fisticuffs for onlookers to gawk at.[break][break]
“Shhh.” Shuwen’s trainer urges Josh. “Maybe you’ll find that. Sounds like you’ve had some mighty good adventures, yeah. Ancient ruins, high speed runs across Hoenn, what more could a man ask for? What’s next, after you take down Lopez?”

Raikiri's autonomy in a battle so intense and important was a testament to how much they trusted one another and how well they knew one another. If it weren't for the overflowing Infinity Energy inside the Zeraora's body, he would have used that Pokémon instead of Saber for his Sygna Suit. Even so, he had no regrets on how his suit was set up; while they were synced to one another and the Infinity Energy flowed, Saber was Raikou's equal.

Shuwen's war cry seemed to be a source of immense strength, PLASMA PAWS meeting SURGING STRIKES. The relentless waves of Infinity Energy clashing with one another blew Josh off his feet. "Not once in my challenge have I... experienced anything like this," the Gym Leader gasped as he slowly got back to his feet from the exchange.

Raikiri was slowing from his wounds and his exhaustion, the Zeraora suffering just as much as Shuwen was. Even with a type advantage, the Urshifu was just so strong. How did he not even flinch in the face of such a powerful offense? Even the volley of ELECTRO BALLS he fired from his whiskers, this time coming mostly from the same direction, did not pack the punch of the one from before.

Meanwhile, the Elite Four and Gym Leader continued their man-to-man conversation as though there was not a violent battle going on near them. "A lot of it depends on what happens down there," Josh reiterated. "But let's assume I'm wrong, and nothing comes of it. I still have a lot of on my plate. The Ultra Wilds are still out there, and we don't know a lot about them. There's also protecting Mauville from the Dynamax threat. I could go on and on about what I were to do if I were a Champion. Until the League enlists me into a project they want Champions for, I'll just... keep doing what I've been doing. You, Navy, are a hero to all of Hoenn. I will be Mauville's hero."

“It’s like I told you. Do what only you can do.” He remains as uncomfortable with the title of hero here as when dahlia goode gave it to him. Something watches him from afar. Whether it watches constantly, he can’t say. All he can do is be himself. If some distant, mysterious Pokemon agrees with their assessment, so be it. If not, he prays it will partner with a better man and save this region.[break][break]
“You know Mauville like the back of your hand, and you can get around it faster than anybody. When a crisis hits, you can be there quicker than anyone. You fly, swim, and run all over the region. If there was some big problem, you could coordinate a ranger response with Ollie better than anybody else in the region.” Those are his strengths, and no one else’s. He is proud to know Josh, proud to have witnessed his growth. If he can truly put his obsession with Raikou to rest, he will be a powerful asset to Hoenn.[break][break]
Raikiri exemplifies that. He is well trained. Even weakened from repeated blows, he stands strong. Shuwen, too, slows down. Two Pokemon can only operate at full force for so long. Lightning fast tempos give way to slow, deliberate strikes. His fur is struck by electro balls. His skeleton flashes for everyone to see. Yet still, he stands. He punches. He does not relent.[break][break]

There were so many things only Josh could do. He was in the unique position of being both high up in Law Enforcement as a Gym Leader, as well as being high up in Mauville's Rangers, second in command only to Captain annalise henderson . As humble as Navy was, he truly was one of Hoenn's regional heroes. Local heroes were just as important. They arguably made greater differences in the lives of citizens of their municipality than the regional or even national heroes did. To an individual looking down a Tauros about to run them over, saving them from the raging bull and saving them from a meteor about to obliterate the region were one and the same.

"And it's my pride, too," Josh spoke for the eight -- no, ten -- Pyroar that were an important part of Mauville's Rangers, too. Those ten lions may as well have been Rangers themselves, with how often they were used for operations where large numbers of Rangers were needed. "Did you read about Hurricane Yellen that crashed into Ever Grande in November of 2022? The coordination for that response was my doing. That's how I got my blue uniform. That's how I got into the position I'm in today."

The head-to-head collision was too much for Raikiri to bear. As much as the duo fought back against one another, matching each other blow for blow, it was the nature of combat that one must fall. His fierce, ecosystem-destroying battle with Elinor Anderson so long ago -- a year ago already -- had taught him that no matter how evenly matched combatants were, every battle must have a winner and a loser.

Yet again, Mauville's Gym Leader had come up short, The center of the blood-filled battle court wafted with the aroma of war. The victor of that war was Shuwen, Raikiri on the ground and barely stirring after the concussive martial arts maneuver. "Navy... What is my problem? How do I keep coming up just short in every--"

Just as he raised his hand to withdraw the fallen Zeraora, Zaborg let out a war cry of his own, rushing toward Josh and slapping Raikiri's Poké Ball out of his hands. At the same time, the beleaguered feline's red eyes opened, as if it were in a trance. Despite his profuse bleeding, the mythical thundercat leaped toward Shuwen from beneath in an effort to BOUNCE and catapult it into the sky.

"Raikiri, stop! It's over!" Josh protested. "You can't push your body any more than that! YOU'LL DIE!!"

“Don’t.” The Elite commands. “That Pokemon wants to see you win, Josh. He wants to win for you so bad that he’d give anything for it.” Shuwen is catapulted into the air. Raikiri gives the bear the gift of flight, sending him high into the stadium. His eyes betray no fear.[break][break]
Instead, he begins to surge with energy. A crystal wedged into his bandana begins to vibrate. A power that is all Shuwen’s own begins to take root. If Raikiri would pit everything he has into this fight, so hellbent on seeing Josh win, then Shuwen must do the same out of respect.[break][break]
“You’ve gotta trust your partners. Let them do what they can do. If they wanna go all out for you, don’t stop ‘em. It’s like when your Absol did the same thing in my gym.” Pointing to the sky, his finger settles on Raikiri. “Trust your partner – the one that cares enough to be here for you at the top of the world.”

As the Z-Crystal within Shuwen's bandana began to surge, so did Raikiri's, emitting a brilliant, yellow light. Josh's Z-GLOVE also gleamed yellow, his hand shaking from its own vibrations. The Z-Energy from it was so intense that it felt like the crystal was going to shatter. "But his very life...?" he protested before Navy reminded him that Twilight did the same thing, pushing herself to the brink of death to get Josh the win he deserved.

This was the exact same thing, but on a much more grand scale. This was Z-Energy. Like Infinity Energy, and especially slongside Infinity Energy, it could kill in overabundance. "Right. That's not the first time she put her life on the line for me, either." He folded his hands in prayer, trusting that the Zeraora would not push too far beyond his limits.

Deeply swallowing, Josh turned the crystal toward Raikiri, both still rising from the force of the springing attack. "HYPERSONIC..."

An ion storm flew out of each of the Zeraora's four paws as his front two rest against Shuwen. There was no getting around it. The Z-Moves of two legendary Pokémon were about to collide in the most destructive clash of attacks Josh had ever seen. The explosion would be able to be seen from the mainland. Earplugs would do little to protect from how loud the explosion would be. The shockwaves of Infinity and Z-Energies would be burning. Face-melting, even. His heart racing a mile a minute, Josh finished his fateful command for Raikiri to do what he did best.

Go fast.

"PLASMA CHARGE!!!"

In a heavenly flash of lightning, plasma bolts flew from Raikiri's paws, thrusting the electric Pokémon back toward the ground at a steep angle. Were Shuwen to get caught in it, a corona of dust would form around him as well during the meteoric dive. Surrounding them was complete silence, sound unable to reach their ears as the aural explosion of their speed's shockwave ravaged all beneath them. Even as Josh was thrown off his feet, his eyes were glued to the action high above him.

Then, a loud popping noise. QUICKINIUM-Z fragments littered the arena, one of them whizzing into Josh and cutting into his chin, drawing blood. He gasped in fear of his Zeraora's health. The thundercat had used that Z-Move many times before. Why then, this time, was there such an overflow of energy to be able to shatter the very crystal his electric Pokémon relied upon?

QUICKINIUM-Z SHATTERED

Raikiri's QUICKINIUM-Z, overloaded from the vigor put into his Z-Move against Shuwen, has exploded into pieces. Josh will not be able to procure a replacement until after the events of PRISMATIC PENETENTIARY. Until then, Raikiri CAN NOT use Z-Moves.

Every last light in the arena is blown out, like stars choking to death in the sky. The scoreboard is fried, glitching out and showing nonsense stats. Lights illuminating their match for all the world to see go out. A jumbotron screen projecting what the world sees of their fight shatters into a million pieces. The power of z-energy is not to be underestimated. kyle lopez once told the Elite that z-moves were one of the first things to draw the attention of the Dark Triad.[break][break]
As Shuwen falls to earth, defeated, Navy understands why. One decisive blow from Raikiri snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. With power like that, anything is possible – if for but one resplendent moment in time. The moment passes, and Navy returns Shuwen to his pokeball.[break][break]
“Well, Josh. Congrats. It’s your win.” Navy is humble in defeat. Crossing the field, he pats Josh on the shoulder. Medics rush to see after their Pokemon. Officers on hand work to restore order. In the dim light, Josh is favored with a warrior’s smile.[break][break]
“Hope you’re ready. He likes to pretend otherwise, but Lopez is no joke.”
