Claydol floated by her side as the pair made their way into the Psychedelic Chateau. Nervousness nipping at her heels as it always did when she went somewhere new. Though this would not be her first Gym Challenge by a long shot, this would be the first one taken after the incident.

Johanna wasn’t about to let what happened stop her. No, she would press on. She would prove that she had not become a lesser trainer after what happened. She would also make Megan Whitmore proud. But that was a whole other thing.

Anyhow, she stepped through the entrance, quickly glancing around to find a Gym Trainer or even the Gym Leader, to let them know that she had arrived.

“Hi, I am here for the Challenge.”

Another day, another gym challenge- something that, while taking time to get used to with her already busy schedule, she was growing more and more fond of with each challenge that passed. Perhaps it was a newfound dependence on the glorious spores she now ingested on a typical day, or perhaps it was the new and old faces she got to meet in battle, strengthening her pokemon even through defeat. Especially now, with the state of the region, that kind of thing was all the more crucial.[break][break]

Her approach was unfaltering, heels clacking upon the winding granite stones that encased the indoor battling stadium in each direction. "Johanna Joy," she called out from the other end of the corridor, hand in hand with her Grimmsnarl, ".. it's a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance! I've wanted to thank you, personally, for hosting the carnival last summer for quite some time now."[break][break]

She felt at ease in knowing, too, that today's challenger was once a Gym Leader. Not solely due to an explanation of the gym challenge likely not being necessary, but in retaining the knowledge, or hunch, that a battle like theirs would pull as many of the stops as her heart desired. Though she knew that her responsibility came with the passing of knowledge, seeking strong opponents was one of the many ways for the preparation of her own.[break][break]

"Come, walk with me," she said, beginning slow steps toward where she had come from, the stadium, ".. do you have any questions for me before we begin? Perhaps about these?" In her palm rested a bowl of stained glass, and inside, two identical pills in the colors of a swirled pink and green tinkered about.

The calling of her name elicited an almost automatic response as she ranked herself up, put on her best conversational smile and readied herself to meet whoever called for her.

“No need to thank me, it was my pleasure to be able to offer Hoenn a chance to wind down for a moment.” Johanna replied. Her smile grew beyond just being polite and into something more appreciative of the efforts that had been acknowledged. “Hopefully the future will allow me to do something similar again.”

Johanna set to following the Gym Leader. Quickly finding herself matching the speed the Gym Leader set.

“Well, I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise of what exactly those pills will make me experience.” Johanna began. “But I am curious. What’s in them?”

The growth of her challenger's smile was contagious in their little walk to the grand corridor- though she wished to satiate her curiosities, there were only so many words she could use that could forewarn how difficult it was for some to physically process what she believed to be a godly compound.[break][break]

"Shiinotic spores, mostly," she responded softly, plucking a rose lining a nearby column, ".. they are exquisite for processing turmoil that has made its way deep down. Part of the challenge is overcoming, grappling with a battle on the inside while a battle happens right before your starry eyes- unless, of course, you've already done so, which may bring you bliss in the blur."[break][break]

It was still easier said than done, as turmoil came to her as often as a new pack of cigarettes- weekly, sometimes less. Having led her to the indoor arena, it existed as a large field of granite overtaken by foliage in its cracks. Adorned with paintings that appeared to be empty, though could come to life with personal desires drawn out by the compound.[break][break]

Leading Johanna to her side, first, she slipped one of the pills into a bowl upon a podium, tended to by one of the creatures who had allowed her to harvest its spores. A kind Shiinotic, it peered at her and the Claydol with fascination and a smile. "If you need anything during the battle, like water, it will fetch it for you. And make sure to tell it a safeword, there are sobering pills here, too."[break][break]

She advanced to her side following, leaving the Grimmsnarl to stretch and momentarily prepare. "Are you ready?" she asked, swallowing her pill without hesitance, ".. you get the first move. And I'll be here with you every step of the way, aiding you with it."[break][break]

Even if the plants on the walls would lie, bringing her eyes to give Johanna the semblance of the eyes of the Ultra Deep Sea.

Johanna listened with patience as the drug was explained to her. She took note of its intricacy, and tried to prepare herself for what she was about to experience. Deep down she knew there was no way she would be prepared.

She offered the Shiinotic a smile as well, and an appreciative nod for all the work it was about to do, and when the time came for a safeword to be given she had to think for a moment. Knowing it needed to be a word that wouldn’t naturally come up in any conversation during battle there was only one word.

“The safeword is Whitmore.” She informed the Shiinotic. And with that her focus would move to the battlefield.

“As ready as can be!”

She swallowed the pill as Claydol took to the field. First move was on her, so while she still had her senses about her she commanded. “Dazzling Gleam!”

Bright rainbow coloured light erupted from Claydol toward the Grimmsnarl.

The Shiinotic beside Johanna's side smiled and nodded at its attempted memorization of her safe word; though it did not understand what the significance of the word meant, nor the connotation, it would at least remember what it sounded like. Navigating its way to the side of the court, staring essentially into the soul of the challenger with delight and attentiveness, it slowly prepared bottles of water and bowls with its frail stem hands.[break][break]

"Good, good," Desiree responded with a smile, releasing a foldable chair on which she promptly sat upon, ".. don't let your dear Claydol hold back now, kay? My Grimmsnarl has a thirst for battling the strongest of opponents."[break][break]

As she spoke, the compound hit her like a bag of bricks; the ordinary, blank paintings began to fill with what her mind could not stop pondering over, being depictions of the leaders of the Megalopolan regime she saw those weeks prior. The ones that wished to captivate with slave labor and affliction of the toxic chain- though it was not the first time the pill had made her relive the sight and the feelings that accompanied it.[break][break]

"I can't help but ask," she said softly, peering into the visions that led Johanna to take on a mask that she once bore, too, ".. were you captured by them, Johanna? Did you travel to space against your will, too?"[break][break]

She looked familiar in that regard, at least, everything other than her face. Amidst her grim wonders, and the ache in her chest that came alongside such resentment and regret toward those of blue skin, the Grimmsnarl bore its sharp teeth with a grin at the eruption of light. It was a light that it knew well, though it stung all the same.. and it craved the sting. Pushing through the Dazzling Gleam with its might, pain bringing it to chum maniacally, it attempted to retaliate with an illuminant, close range SPIRIT BREAK.
