Morrighan has never fathomed herself much as an adventurer. There are the adventurers, after all, and the chroniclers - the bards, the artists, the journalists that sing songs of their deeds and wondrous happenings. And yet, here she goes, finding herself in a group with three other people she has not met before, though a strange sense of imminent trust is palpable as they enter Granite Cave together - the Ultra Deep Sea. Though trust does not come easy to the story collector, here she is, inadvertently relying on those three to keep her life safe, and in turn, to hope that she could aid in whichever way possible. How curious, this giving and taking is.[break]

"I have been to ... strange places, though none quite beat being inside the belly of the beast, so to speak," she muses as they pass oozing poisons, dynergy ever-noticeable even to those that may not have been that exposed to it before. "I wonder, how did people figure out that this must be the inside of an Eternatus?" At least where they entered, not too much seems noticeable of the mysterious Pokémon - or maybe, she missed the obvious in fear of what she would discover else.

Montgomery spoke in a low, gruff voice, finishing the last of his cigarette before stomping the last remnants of burning ash against the ground. He came armed, along with a stash of Pokemon to assist in their mission.

Last time he'd come to ultra sea, Navy explained to him the importance of his job and why he entrusted him as deputy. Now... he felt like he'd let down his friend and comrade in the shadows of war. From attacking Aoki Hana, to attempting to ring howard slayte's throat.

This time, he was with a woman he'd met only twice before — and had aimed his pistol at — and two other girls he'd never met. There was a certain uneasiness that emitted off of him.

A deep frown rested on his face as he approached the cave, diving below. Above, it appeared like light was reflecting off waves. Yet, they were able to breath as easily as before.

And the heartbeat was going to drive him mad.

"Let's get movin'. Better to get ahead while we still have our minds intact."

Ultra Deep Sea is terrifying, but Lavinia takes some comfort in the fact that she's used to fear by now. The world itself has been terrifying for as long as she can recall, teeming with Pokémon everywhere, from the wilderness through restaurants to her own fucking house, because her family is as crazy for the creatures as everyone else. She wishes they took after Calpurnia.

The irony takes a moment to register. Wouldn't it be far simpler to wish that she didn't take after her mother? It's not that she wants to be like Kelpie in every respect — or rather, it's not only that —, but she finds it almost impossible to imagine a life without fear in it. Besides, fear can be useful. Healthy, even. Against creatures as powerful as Pokémon, it certainly is. Within Ultra Space, even more so.

Yet, for all that she's familiar with this strange dimension through research and with fear through experience, it still takes everything in Lavinia to keep from shrieking. She thought Morrighan was speaking figuratively, for fuck's sake! Why is the woman so casual about this?! The other guy's the same, and their last party member doesn't seem phased either. What the fuck is wrong with all of them?

For that matter, what the fuck is wrong with the League? She would think that "hey, we're sending you into the stomach of an Eternatus" would be the sort of thing that any participants in the expedition would be told upfront, and yet. And yet.

May the holy fucking goat and all the other legendary Pokémon she's never believed in protect her despite her atheism. She hasn't prayed since Chryssy went missing in the war zone and she really didn't want to be doing it again so soon after that, but there's nothing else for it. She takes a deep breath.

"Um, I beg your pardon?" Lavinia says to no one in particular, her voice shaking only slightly. Since her insane teammates are keeping their cool, so must she, if only for the sake of her future in science. "Was I supposed to, uh, be aware of that?"

Maybe she should quit while she can, actually. Damn her papers, science camp, scholarship to Slateport University and all the rest. She could be an astronomer instead, or sell fries for the rest of her life. Gods, she'd kill to be at that awful job right now.

Always struggling with her place in things, ever torn between who she thought she could be and who she felt she was becoming, Yuina was a part of one of many expeditions into the ultra wilds and beyond. It was one thing to continue to fight a fight that wasn't hers, but it was another thing to feel like such a hypocrite after digging into Eddie about what the league was doing in tandem with rocket doing the same things. Like invading Ultra Space.[break][break]
But as she was still being watched, monitored, walking the razor's edge and poised to be pushed at even the slightest hint that she could be anything other than the victim of circumstance that so many believed her to be... Yuina pressed on.[break][break]
"It goes against human nature to leave the unknown as just that. Unknown. It was discovered because of its dynergy signature, no other Pokémon or creature could compare," Yuina spoke aloud as their small expedition team made it to the landing point. She both agreed with Montgomery, and answered the older woman, before glancing to the younger of the group...[break][break]
"The mission manifest made things pretty clear... Especially since this is the most dangerous and potent location that has been charted in ultra space. We're breathing in toxins already as we speak... We have to be quick and efficient," Yuina returned, factual, concise, concerned... This was an expedition made for willing participants because of the kind of environment it was. Maybe she was joking and trying to keep things light for their journey... But that didn't stop her from giving a short, concerned, glance to Montgomery...

The manifesto made things pretty clear, Higashi says, and Lavinia can feel the warmth of anger and shame spread over her face. The fact that it's the woman closest to her age in their party who corrects her — patronizingly too, as she goes into the dangers like Lavinia wouldn't know even that much — makes her feel worse still. So, she's an ignorant child to them. Fine. She'll prove otherwise.

"I read the manifesto," she says, managing not to snap only because she must be charming. Their environment makes it far harder than usual. With an apologetic smile she adds, "Sorry. Bad joke."

She really did read the manifesto, as a matter of fact, though she doesn't quite recall its detailed contents. She should have memorized it like she does with all other material. The fact that she was in bed with a swollen ankle and more bitterness than she knew what to do with shouldn't have kept her from it. One mistake, and she looks like a complete fool.

Great going, Lavinia, she thinks, her anger more directed at herself than at Higashi. Keep this up, and your career may end before it starts. Self-deprecation does nothing but make her eyes burn along with her face, so she thinks instead: I must not fear. I can do this. Right. She can do this. Even if she can't, she has to; and she will. She will.

Yet she is only a girl — one possessed of uncommon determination and pride, perhaps, but a girl all the same — whose willpower shrinks before the unknowable. Ultra Space, which already took her father away, now takes away her dignity too. She can feel Eternatus' heartbeat all around them, and realizes with a start how small she is compared to a Legendary Pokémon; or even just the innards of one.

All of which is to say that Lavinia takes no more than a few steps before the floor crawls under her, as though the beast were trying to expel their party in the same manner that a person expels phlegm from their lungs, and her ankle — healed, but still sensitive — twists. She crashes with a yelp, and though Kalliope's claws spare her from the worst of the impact, still her arm makes contact with a festering pool. Her eyes widen.

Lavi swallows panic and tears alike, instead beating the cosmic dust off of her trousers with the arm that is not covered in oozing goo. Her jacket is half disintegrated already, and though she can't see her skin beneath the poison, she can feel it burning. That arm — the left — she is careful not to move as she rights herself and testily places her weight on her ankle. It's not twisted, so that's something.

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery's eyes flicked up briefly to meet Yuina Higashi's, sharing her shared expression of concern. If their party wasn't careful, ignorance could, and would, kill them. He merely cleared his throat, as if to move the conversation past the stalled awkwardness.

"Let's get a move on. More we stand here, more we're gonna end up in that pile'a filth," he grunted, his hand indicated to the disgusting collection of gunk that had collected on the walls and floor of the cave over time.

So, the deputy took the lead, having to hunch his head down in order to pass through the cavern. Unlike his female companions, he had a disadvantage of height. He did, however, have longer legs.

Those legs carried him forward, further ahead to spot a seemingly unstable wall. Where the cave fluttered as eternatus breathed, the spot he located appeared to vibrate. He had a guess that there was nothing holding the spot steady from the other side.

"There. We tear down that wall, we get an openin' further in."

Montgomery's lungs began to burn, and he coughed aggressively as the poison leaked fumes into the air. It was an unpleasant burn, far different from the kind he had while smoking his cigarettes. And, it was probable that it was affecting his lungs as badly due to their poor shape from countless years of nicotine use.

Yuina's nerves were already shot on a regular basis, she could hardly keep herself together most days let alone wonder and worry about anyone else around her... But it seemed that she wouldn't get the luxury of just being able to tend to herself for this venture.[break]
Between her and Montgomery, she was confident in at least surveying, gathering information, mapping, charting and seeing what kind of advances rocket forces might have made in their sector, or not. But their teammates...[break][break]
There was a yelp as the environment around them continued to prove just how toxic and potent it was, a living organism that was bent on maintaining its self sustained eco system. They were a virus, and the poisons, and the things lurking in the shadows were the white blood cells that would eradicate them if they weren't careful. And it seemed the basics of the immune system were already doing its work.[break][break]
Yuina turned to find the younger of their group both favoring her ankle and hold out her arm burned by Poison from the oozing walls.[break]
"Please--," she started, an edge to her tone, but she caught herself, biting her tongue. She was there, right in that very position herself really not that long ago. Brand new, just trying to do what she thought was the right thing. Civilians getting involved in official league work couldn't be helped, not when the league's forces were already spread so thin and spent so drastically... It was just a perfect storm.[break][break]
"Be careful...," she finished, her voice softening again, but as distant as her eyes were, always watching for something... more. She came closer, looking over the girl's arm, and reached into the pack she brought along for supplies. She'd spent enough time with John Sullivan both working and otherwise to know a thing or two about basic first aid.[break][break]
"Here, this will help. But I only have so much with me, we should be careful," Yuina offered, holding out a glass vile of vibrant, glowing blue water. Celebi's Life Dew infused with the power of his Natural Cure could do wonders in a pinch.[break]
"It'll just take a couple of drops," she spoke as she popped the vile open and dripped only a few small drops along the affliction.[break][break]
But this was far from a life saving measure... She hoped it wouldn't come to that...

There is an eerie calm when Morrighan listens to Montgomery's remark, agreeing with the general terminus yet disagreeing with the words chosen to form that thought, and to Yuina's explanation, making sense of what she has not considered before, considering how less-versed she is in the matters of energy and physics, dynergy much less. It's an interesting thought, though, a scientific matter-of-fact that she nods and swiftly notes down in stride. If she has learnt nothing of those bygone years, she at least knows how to handle taking notes in her worn-out notebook, even while the world is burning - or oozing away - around her.[break]

Still, she is careful of her environment, breathes levelled and slow on purpose to avoid the poisonous substances lingering in the air and all around them - though before she can say much else, the youngest of their group falls, quite literally.[break]
[break]
Carefully, she brings out a Magearna coloured in blue and silver tones opposed to the faded rosegold of age, largely unaffected by the poisonous nature of their environment. Morrighan gives it a quiet nod as the Magearna approaches Lavinia Kubrick carefully, trying to give Yuina Higashi a Helping Hand in the aid she is administering, whether or not it would actually prove successful, given the nature of their circumstances.[break]

Still ... this is the most she can do. Instead, she approaches Montgomery James with a curious look as he observes an obstacle in their way. "So ... we should be able to get through with some force, is what I hear?" she muses, having to take a step back from the concentrated poison that still lingers in the wall. She shakes her head, though it only helps so much in shaking off this dreadful sense of losing control over her limbs, slowly ... "The poison ..." she mutters, more to herself than not. It's proving to be quite the obstacle, but her experience with such things do not extend beyond that which can poison a mind, rather than the body.

As quickly as they had gotten started, everything was taking a turn as the environment did in fact prove to be potent and vile. She was tending to the younger woman's arm when the woman a bit older than her started to look faint, the poison was doing it's slow work.[break][break]
She herself could feel it too, but against her Sygna Suit, and perhaps still some left over toxin from the toxic chain that might not have ever truly left her system, Yuina would fare, but only just, and not for much longer alone. They needed to keep working through this.[break][break]
"Okay, okay, everyone will be fine, we just have to focus," she said aloud, perhaps more for her own resolve. Her nerves were going to get to her well before any toxin if they couldn't get a handle on things.[break][break]
She drew out a pokeball, and tapped at the release, where one of her many studies emerged from his shell. The Sliggoo coated in steel would prove effective here.[break]
"Nimh, Absorb," she requested of the mollusc, glancing to her other teammates as she drew in an even breath at the revitalizing energy of Absorb's healing.[break][break]
"Any pokemon that you have that can use grass type healing, bring them out. Periodically using the energy is like a small dose, short term antidote."

Montgomery was growing antsy. They needed to move on, find a place that wasn't as badly poisoned or a way out. Dillydallying would prove fatal.

"Might I recommend that we, I dunno... move along?" He attempted to keep his voice even and calm, but there was a small bite of annoyance in it as he began to cough again.

He did end up listening to Yuina Higashi. Beside him, his ninjask buzzed. He emitted an absorbing energy that helped his cough, if only for a moment.

"C'mon, ladies."

There was somewhat of an ambiguous smile on the story collector's face upon hearing the words of Yuina Higashi and Montgomery James, somewhat of a contrast to one another, and yet, they all simply have one goal: get as far as they can while staying alive, as much as they can. Make it out alive would be preferable, of course, though she wonders how such things would fare in the long run, with how things are starting. But perhaps ... they can make it just fine.[break]

Yuina's idea is a welcome one amidst the uncertainty that lingers in the air amidst the toxins that spread into each of their nervous systems, whether mentally or physically or in any one way, and she brings out a second Pokéball amidst the Magearna, releasing her most trusted partner, a Chatot, that lands idly on her shoulder.[break]

CALENDULA / ♁ / KEEN EYE / CHATTER, CONFIDE, HYPER VOICE, SING, ECHOED VOICE, MIMIC

She does not quite have a Pokémon of such nature as described, however ... Morrighan points to one of the Pokémon of the two that already used the move, "would you be so kind?" Without further ado, the Chatot is Mimicing the move, Absorbing in the form of a melodious melody. It's not quite the way the others did it, but she already feels her senses clear up.[break]

"How about we scout ahead a little first?" she thusly remarks to Montgomery James, gesturing for the way ahead. Of course, they cannot go too far, though hopefully, this suggestion would be enough to quench the antsy feeling if for a little bit, while leaving some room for Lavinia Kubrick to recover a bit more of her health.

They haven't been here for even ten minutes and already Lavinia owes a woman she barely knows — a woman who was patronizing her just seconds ago — her damn life. At least in part, anyway. She is pretty sure Kalliope's singular healing move is helping, too. Good thing her Hatterene learned it even at the expense of her bloodlust. Although it wouldn't hurt to have another Hatterene to heal...

"I'm sorry," she murmurs to Higashi, properly abashed, even though she hates it. Hates the way she sounds, the way she has to posture humility, the way she no doubt looks weak and pathetic. Well, that was a very pathetic display, so she only has herself to blame. "I'll be more careful."

She means that last, if nothing else. Only, she's as concerned for her own pride as for their limited-supply miracle cure. There's no time to inquire about the vial's contents, though the scholar in her would very much like to. The specifics don't really matter, in any case. She knows enough about this world to make an educated guess: Whatever that cure is, it comes from a Pokémon.

As much as she hates them, Lavinia has to admit that they are useful.

But then, the mere fact that she expanded her roster in preparation for this trip is already an admittance, isn't it? Just not quite so explicit. She'll mull over the uses of a potential second Hatterene later. For now, the Cherrim she's brought will have to do.

"Absorb," she says without preamble, without even waiting for the light to fade, and watches as it does its thing. Absorb works, thank the gods; or rather, Higashi. "That was a great idea."

Whereas Yuina has quickly cemented herself as a valuable member of their team — of any team, Lavinia would go as far as to say —, Montgomery is... The exact opposite. Fine, she herself hasn't exactly been useful so far, but at least she hasn't said the same thing every time she's opened her mouth. To think that he's — What did he say he works with, again? It doesn't matter. He might be like twice her age, but he's also pissing her off.

"Can you say anything else?" She snaps, nearly hisses really. "I'll admit I was stupid, but I'm doing my best to recover quickly. Get a move on yourself —" she cuts herself off just before calling the man a moron, swallowing the insult, " — go scouting like she said. Thank you, Cahill."

At least two out of three adults on this party are reasonable, but there's a part of Lavi that can't help thinking she should have stayed home. No amount of research compares to real experience — which she knew already —, she's out of her depth, and she could... Well, she could die. She should have listened to her mother.

That doesn't make any difference now, though. She's here, so she has to suck it up, be mature and make herself useful; or else the shame might be even worse than death.

"I apologize," Lavinia says after a beat, shakily.

Linus comes to rub himself against her legs while Kalliope floats just behind her protectively, and even the nameless Cherrim leans against her. The latter spooks her, but she allows it.

"I let my temper get the better of me. I... I'm fine, and you're right in any case, James. Let's get going."
