AS EVERYONE RAISES THEIR WEAPONS, their intruders do the same. possessed by a robotic mirroring of movement, they cast the same spells: dark pulse, inferno, lava plume, infestation, dragon darts, psychic, anchor shot. curiously, KING'S SHIELD & ZAP CANNON are not echoed.[break][break]

their attacks fly across the banquet table. chunks of meat and vegetables spray into the air alongside shattered kitchenware.[break][break]

Stormy Silph's KING'S SHIELD nullifies the initial brunt of a few attacks, while the harsh rattling of metal chains (ANCHOR SHOT) shackles his doppelganger—and himself.[break][break]

however, everyone is subject to the intense flames. pain scorches across their bodies as their standoff continues.[break][break]

those who have targeted enemies that wield different weapons from them, will find their attacks making purchase; however, those who cast largely single-target spells will find them becoming largely nullified. whatever damage passes through will reflect the resistances and weaknesses kyle lopez had expected.[break][break]

as the attacks subside, the hoods have blown back. the party's suspicions are true. facing them are their doppelgangers, perfectly replicated— save for crowns and wings.[break][break]

another window shatters as the skull knight and their rapidash land onto the staircase. the knight, eyes them before racing up the spiralling staircase.[break][break][break]

ZAP CANNON is a move normally locked behind the ranger class, but the THUNDEROUS WINGS Gavin had looted from the battle with Zapdos granted access to this seemingly-effective move. The dagger in his hand sparks with an electrical energy as he hovers over the skill and takes aim...[break][break]

No healers, and the only ranger in the room he knows about is resistant to electric damage.[break][break]

He switches his focus to the spectral knight as it begins to ascend the stairs, instead, and whips the dagger toward it at full force.[break][break]

one of the other players she'd fought the boss with appears to have had a similar train of thought. as the knight rises towards the tower-top with each step, iris flies along the staircase in hopes of catching up. when she feels she has a clear aim, she fires a ZAP CANNON at the skull knight.

The entire fight, while she took it seriously on instinct, it was only now she felt actual pain. What a pain it was too. Scorching heat raced across her skin and she cringed back, watching in bafflement as her clone continued to mimic her. It crouched low, eyes bright, and teeth bared as she mirrored the monster. She cast her eyes low in a sort of fury, teeth grinding against each other as she considered her options. If she felt pain, she could die, that was all she knew. If fighting their clones made them endure more pain, it was foolish. Luckily, the knight had just entered, and provided a new way out. Only barely glaring at the others to consider where they were, she launched at the knight, hoping her attack wasn't repelled, and swung the ominously purple blade at him. Rikiya grunted in pain as he felt the flames from his doppelganger burn at the group. "Motherfucker!", the mage called out. As his own flames burned at their cloaks, Rikiya's eyes widened. They were doppelgangers of them, save for their special equipment. He had to wonder if this was some "twenty four hour op" meant to frame them for whatever was going to come. "Fuck!", Rikiya called out.

As the Skull Knight emerged, Rikiya followed the group in turning his wand on the being. He would fire an Ice Beam at the thing, joining in on the assault. "Fuck you, fuckface!", Rikiya called out at the alleged hacker.

"oh."

his eyes shift from the rest of their enemies to what he perceives to be the raid boss of the event. the grand entrance and the distinct design compared to everything else makes it stand out from their doppelgangers.

"are we joining the dogpile?" he turns to stormy and noah. "we're joining, right?"

he takes flight with the use of thunderous wings, getting out of the way from the bulk of the fighting for a clean shot. a bunch of other players go for the attack as well. kyle helps cement their chance for a hit with the attack that most people hated rangers and changed their builds for.

air slash comes from his gun, blades of wind shooting from the end of the barrel towards the knight.

He's targeting the supposed raid boss astride his probably super creepy Rapidash - but honestly she's impressed because it makes her wonder if she can dress Apollo up in body paint to make him look like that.[break][break]

The thought is fleeting as she prepares her next attack. She combines Kyle's AIR SLASH with her own powerful HURRICANE. And, while her SHEER FORCE ability nullifies her chances of confusing the skeleton man, she's counting on Kyle being able to flinch.[break][break]

For a mage, Katherine was more tanky than one could expect. The usage of AURORA VEIL combined with the effects of her ability, ICE SCALES provided her with plenty of defense to tank attacks that normally could obliterate a frail player of her class. The flames that do reach her, when they do, are weakened by the protective aura of the rainbow-colored mist, and only then does she have to feel them lick at her skins.

Parts of her avatar's clothing are burned, but she doesn't feel the need to cover herself up quite yet. It was only slightly more revealing, after all.

It was almost as if it was swimming through a shimmering lake.

The wind howling from behind him was a sign he should’ve gone with the class that had Flying, but of course he’d already gone down the path of the Mage, and so here he was today. His nagging suspicions about him attacking the doppelganger were correct—although to be honest?

He thought catching his body double off-guard with a different spell was going to work.

Thanks to his Ice Scales ability, the damage from the flame-based attacks didn’t hit as hard as it normally would, although part of his clothes were now singed and flaking off.

A minor inconvenience but what the hell.

Still holding his book of spells aloft, he noted that everyone had abandoned their doppelgangers—and he did so, as well. Secretly thankful that the fire-type attacks had scorched the Steel-type attack to cinders, if not outright ash. Looking over at where everyone was aiming their spells, he knew he had one shot—and he was going to take it.

After the last Mage had fired off an Icicle Crash, it was his turn. Flipping the pages quickly to the earmarked portions that recorded his Ice-type spells, he called out over the ruckus as best as he could, “Duck!” before forcefully waving his right hand in the direction of the approaching knight. The boss? Who knew?

A sudden hail storm of shards shimmered into existence as a Blizzard attack, hoping to sweep through the area and freeze the knight in its tracks, came forth.

But was it going to work?

The flames from the opposing hackers would have cooked her alive if not for her Ice Scales that coated her body. The flame's intense heat died down, but the burn still hurt regardless. She yelped out, staggering backward with wide eyes. She was only human! She might be tankier than the average mage, but she had robes! There was no armor to protect her, no special powers to defend forever. Too many of those would be curtains for her... and dying in VR would definitely have repercussions in reality, somehow. Someone doesn't just experience death without it causing a problem.

However, the sudden revelation of the hackers being clones of the other players, and herself, startled her immediately. Of course, the game had the code for their avatars, but the hackers specifically using the same avatars to unnerve them? What a cheap move. Her grip on her wand tightened as she patted down her robe to put out the flames when suddenly the skull knight from before burst in through the room and attempted to ascend the stairs.

"Not if I can help it! Telekinesis!" Ruby suddenly shouted out, flinging the psychic energy straight towards the Knight, hopefully even levitating him straight off his horse in the meantime, and making all the other player's attacks hit on the mark!

"dogpile?" a laugh escapes him, and the heart grows fonder in turn.

as stormy follows through, noah attempts the same; however, the doppelgangers mimic their movements as best they can. briefly, noah is distracted by the sight of another kyle— but his instincts as a bodyguard kick in like a defib.

as the others lunge for the knight, noah cleaves the air horizontally. before them, a WIDE GUARD materializes, withstanding several attacks before it's downed.

he hears the clamor of ice and electricity, the howling of winds, and psychic bolts. noah can only imagine such sights as the doppelgangers attempt to descend upon him.

THE PLAYERS SHIFT FOCUS. as the doppelgangers mirror their movements, their lifeless avatars preparing spells and weapons in surreal automation, the room thunders with each clap of hoof against stone.[break][break][break]

Cillian Quinn is quick to act. like the rogue he is, the man flings his dagger. it courses with electricity, his wings drowning the room in dramatic shards of light. another pair of wings take flight as @iris darts in. alongside the dagger, she fires her own ZAP CANNON at the fiendish knight.[break][break][break]

the knight is struck by the dagger. their obsidian armor crackles with electricity as the rapidash raises its front legs with a haggard neigh. wordlessly, the knight unsheathes their sword to fend off @iris.[break][break][break]

however, Kaida Adachi's purple blade is redirected toward the knight thanks to kyle lopez's perk. poison splatters from the impact like a firework of ooze. the skull knight recoils as @iris manages to seize the opening.[break][break][break]

the animation of CONFUSION cycles atop the skull knight's head. but the rapidash neighs once more, and the status affliction is cleared. however, the horse's red eyes glow with the terrible hue of purple. the knight raises their sword once more for another wave of DARK PULSE, but kyle lopez is able to FLINCH the knight before it can ransack the party.[break][break][break]

Stormy Silph's HURRICANE hurls the knight off the horse and their heavy body collides with the stone wall. before the knight can crumple to the steps, Rikiya Oshiro's ICE BEAM keeps the knight stuck to the wall before Katherine Fairburne condemns them and their steed under a devastating ICICLE CRASH.[break][break][break]

ice shatters and glides off the staircase like glass. the rapidash attempts to protect its rider, but Ruby Walker's TELEKINESIS is powerful enough to lift both horse and knight into the air in a shower of ice shards. Alexei Ivanov's BLIZZARD flows from their staff as noah faber defends the rest of the party from the doppelganger's advance.[break][break][break]

the wintry gales pin the knight back down from the ascertained hit of a BLIZZARD. the skull knight's skull mask begins to crack— but before the party can deal the finishing blows, the villain's exposed smile, small but sharp, spreads into a diamond corner. finally, the rapidash succumbs to Kaida Adachi's poisons. it falls into a limp heap before the knight speaks:[break][break][break]

"WELL DONE."

a pillar of blue light engulfs the knight: the glow of a logout. the gameworld grows quiet as the hacked accounts and doppelgangers too, begin to logout en masse. peace returns to sylvis— but the future of the game grows dark with the thought of inevitable cancellation.[break][break]

with a violent shiver, dahlia removes the virtual reality peripheral from her head. her sweaty blonde hair falls loose as she leans back with a sigh. she sets it on the desk counter.

"that was a doozy."

she lifts herself up from her seat, a hand bracing on the chair's arm. the screen of her monitor emits its sour, feathered light in the dark room she wades in.

"satisfied?" a voice resonates from a murky corner.

"yes," dahlia sighs again, "but switching off the pain sensitivity was something i was against. we discussed this."

the disembodied voice stops, but the silence is filled with a coarse, grisly guffaw.

"we need to set realistic parameters in order to receive the most accurate data." each syllable seems to send ripples in the charcoal sea of the room. "when avatars are pushed to their limits, what will they do?"

the commissioner frowns, but the slight dip of her chin suggests acceptance.

"i'll take the data, thank you. all the top players." she tucks a blonde curl behind her ear as she always does.

"game statistics, player information, chat logs—"

"as long as they don't feature cyber sex or weird roleplayers." dahlia grimaces. "i've witnessed enough of that with the gamemaster account. enough."

the voice stutters roughly with laughter.

"as you wish."

eventually, dahlia leaves to see Olivia Abbiati, for the a.q.u.a. initiative may have some merit after all. a few days later, blades & bulwarks closes due to the controversy.
