Zappa's wide feet slapped against the dunes as he sprinted away from the Lucario and Goodwitch. The enemies closed, but at the last second the Heliolisk VOLT SWITCHED, changing places with the peacefully snoozing Tapu Bulu!

Lucario crashed into the bull with its EXTREME SPEED, landing a surprising strike with blinding speed. SHADOW BALL collided a moment after, bursting with rough tendrils of darkness that lashed at the legendary, forcing it awake. Tapu Bulu opened its eyes. The first thing it saw was Lucario right up in its face. "Buuu?" The legendary tilted its head to the side, regarding this creature that had woken it up so carelessly. Its eyes narrowed. "BUUUU!" It grayed, and with surprising speed it swung its huge head forward in a ZEN HEADBUTT! "Yeah! That's the stuff! Show 'em the power of the jungle!" Zac called from the sidelines. He had been watching his chances of victory slowly drain away, but with Bulu now entering the fight things were looking up! As long as the legendary didn't fall asleep again...

Meanwhile, Zappa hadn't exactly escaped trouble, only switched to a better matchup. Zeraora's PLASMA FIST blasted Heliolisk with lightning. The bolts crackled along his tail and lit the lizard up like an Arceusmas tree! He chirped in alarm and pain and, still glowing, rushed his attacker with the last of his strength. This final, desperate charge picked up a wave of sand and earth as he tried to run over Zeraora with a BULLDOZE.

Maractus hunkered down with a SPIKY SHIELD. It was a cheeky tactic, but one that would protect it from the DRILL PECK (at least for now), and might leave the Corviknight with a beak full of spines.

-Zappa VOLT SWITCHED with Tapu Bulu (rotating spots)
-Bulu was hit by EXTREME SPEED and SHADOW BALL
-Bulu woke up and attacked Lucario with ZEN HEADBUTT
-Zappa was hit by PLASMA FISTS (and was badly hurt)
-Zappa attacked Zeraora with a last ditch BULLDOZE
-Maractus blocked DRILL PECK with SPIKY SHIELD

"Good to hear it wasn't too serious," Zac said, relief spreading through him like sunshine. "I was worried about you mate. Let me know if you get injured again, I've got a bit of a healing touch."

The barely corporeal opponent shot a pinpoint CONFUSE RAY at Tentacruel. The strange frequency sunk into the body of the Pokemon, rattling his brain and throwing off his senses. Tentacruel flailed around, slamming into the sand with its dozen tentacles and blasting jets of BUBBLEBEAM around with less-than-perfect aim. 

"I'd love to have a drink after this," Zac said, taking a drink from his can. "It's been a long day, hasn't it?"

"Only just," Zac said, as he wiped his forehead with his lars and Articuno sweatbands. "Are you sure you haven't done this before? These shots have got some wicked spin on them."

Kingler returned the shot, just. The crab was getting tired, and was having trouble taking on two opponents at once. "You can do it mate! Left!" he shouted, and the crab lunged sideways, batting the ball back over the net.

"What? Disqualified? Why!?" Zac asked, dumbfounded by the outrageous decision by the referee. "Use of performance enhancing substances, theft of an official's equipment, use of an illegal move, and activation of an unregistered Mega Stone," the referee said, rattling off the violations while Zac's mouth was still open. "Oh. Well, yeah that's fair. Thanks ref."

Zac shook Cian's hand, "Thanks for the great match mate. Bit of a wild one, ay?"

Zac laughs cheerfully at 's accurate accusations of public testing. "It's called 'After Dark'," he said, taking another long drink from his own can. "I've been saving the launch for a special occasion, and I reckon there's nothing more special than celebrating some glorious victories and crushing defeats with my best mates!" Zac finished off his can in three deep glugs. There was a pleasant flush spreading down his neck now, a sure sign that he was in several drinks too deep. 

"So what's this game we're playing?"

DRILL PECK burrowed into Kingler's shell, cracking his hard carapace and forcing him back towards the edge. "Hold your ground mate!" Zac called, "another few steps and you'll be taking a swim!" Kingler fizzed angrily, and drug his feet into the plastic surface.

There was a dark, dangerous sheen to the crab's shell, like the glint of a broken knife. The edges of his carapace plates were crooked and cracked from the impact of the DRILL PECK. Banjo pushed back against the Empoleon, running the sharp edges of his RAZOR SHELL up along his foe's body.

Zac pushed his way through the group of spelunkers, delivering healing touches of what little energy he could pull from the roots and mushrooms growing in the caves. He felt the rock shift and move around them, as if a titanic battle was happening on the surface. He felt a tug from his connection with Tapu Bulu as grew her heroic plants, but didn't know what to make of the pulse. 

Zac stepped up beside his friend , ready to  face down their new foe. "I've got ya back mate. Kev, go with . Keep the path clear, ay?" The Steelix rumbled, and moved off with Zenji and Lucario. He would keep up the STEEL ROLLER.

Zac had read the A.Q.U.A reports from the Meteor Falls mission. Some of his fellow had encountered and fought a creature very similar to this. "Push it back! Into the lava!" Zac said, pointing to glowing river of lava behind Regidrago. As Giona's Huntail chomped down on the enemy, Clawitzer opened fire with DRAGON PULSE, blasting Regidragon with a concussive volley of compressed azure flame. 

Zagrea the Heatran rushed in, low and inevitable, and smashed into their adversary with IRON HEAD, aiming to take out the stubby legs of the low dragon. The spherical legendary was built close to the ground, and likely had a center of gravity to match.

-Zac tried to heal his allies and Pokemon (not very effectively, as there isn't much plant life around)
-Steelix used STEEL ROLLER to help Zenji find a path 
-Clawitzer used DRAGON PULSE to push Regidrago backwards (towards the river of lava)
-Heatran used IRON HEAD to push Regidrago backwards (towards the river of lava)

Don dodged the first fist, skirted the second, but the third and forth piledrove the little bug into the sand. Despite being the cutest mascot in Hoenn, the natural charm and rampant popularity of the Charjabug did nothing to ward off the absolutely outrageous strength of Noah's famous wrestler. 

A nearby bell dinged the end of the match, and Zac shook Noah's hand. "Awesome fight mate! I was sure I had you at the end there, but you got me fair and square." 

Zac grinned and leaned in closer, and whispered in Noah's ear. "Oh, and the secret ingredient is Dunsparce venom. Just trace amounts to jump-start your adrenal gland and supercharge your immune system. In small doses it's quite medicinal!" He let out a pleased sigh, and nodded slowly, looking at the ruined battlefield. "Time for a bit of refreshments, I reckon. You ready for some fruit?" 

The pair headed over to the broad tent where the watermelon contest was taking place. Each of them had a long table set up, with seats for all six of their Pokemon and themselves. "Okay Noah, ready?" Zac asked, tucking in his bib. 

The bell rang, and Yucca the Sceptile slashed at her watermelon with bladed wrists. Uneven chunks tumbled across the table, and she shoveled the red and green chunks into her mouth, gulping the cold fruit down greedily.

The return headbutt sizzled through the air, and bounced off Tapu Bulu. The bull let out a groan and slumped to the side, happily 'out'.

"See? What I say? A comeback!" Zac said, smiling with all his teeth. This was exciting. He was up one point but down to one Pokemon. 

"Okay. This could be our last shot. Ready?" Zac asked Kingler. The crab fizzed in excitement, frothing at the mouth and clanging his claws together. "Yeah! Okay....SET!" Zac said, hurling the Darumakan like a baseball.

A dark slash slid across the projectile as it left their side, sending the Darumaka veering suddenly sideways and straight down at Lich's feet.

tapu bulu vs skitty [HstarT]

Zac nodded. Ki had a good point. What sort of presence did he need? Certainly not humbling. He already had Ki and for that. Relaxing? Nope. 

Zac had always surrounded himself, maybe subconsciously, with lazy Pokemon. Zappa the lazy lizard. Helen, the mountain that masqueraded as a cow. Maybe it was to balance out his insane drive for thrill and adventure. But now that he had Bulu, Zac felt that his regular partners weren't so much 'balancing' as 'anchoring'. 

Zac watched Sparkles cling on to Bulu's face, forcing the legendary to its feet. The bull stormed around, tossing its head violently in an attempt to unseat the face invade.

That's what I need. Something exciting and high-energy. Something to get him into trouble, and to take with him on ruin raids and trips into deep, uncharted jungles.

"I need an outside cat."

Big Habanero's left head let out a squark of alarm, but his right head licked Sunny back happily.

Banjo waved his claws in celebration. Yay! A point! Gravedigger served the ball back, and Kingler reached up to block, only to find that his long limbs were shrinking.

"That's the end of our net dominance then," Zac said, as the mega glow faded from the stone on his wrist. "Nice work out there!" Banjo looked around with surprise and disappointment, just as the flaming ball shot right past him and hit the sand. "Damn! Four to two then. You're making a comeback!"

Zac retrieved the ball. "Okay Bulu, you've gotta at least give this a try ay? Look, I'll set you up." Zac stood directly behind the bull and hurled the Darumaka twohanded down on Bulu's head. The makeshift ball rebounded, soaring over the net with strange spin.

HYDRO PUMP tore through the water and battered the fleeing Mantine. The hit was too much for the weakened Pokemon, and she flapped limply to the surface, rolling over and showing her pale belly in submission.

"Great work girl, you gave that a damn good try," Zac said, returning her.

Meanwhile, Natsuki was hunting for revenge. Huntail had just knocked out her friend, and no amount of AQUA JETS would be enough to distract her. 

The Feraligatr THRASHED through the water, coming for Huntail. She tore through a kelp beds, grazing up against a sunken ship, and burst through a coral shelf, closing on the fleeing Huntail. Her teeth sang with ICE and bayed for blood. 

Mantine FAINTED
Feraligatr was not distracted by Caravanah
Feraligatr used ICE FANG!

The thorns scratched at Bulu's hide, and its chiming soured. The jungle bells tolled notes of sadness and of a family divided, either by choice or by circumstance. Grasses poked through the sands beneath their feet, speckled with bright flowers and sprigs of wild, foreign plants.

Aloe. 
Fern and Zinnia.
And then Day Lily.

The plants came in waves, brightening to lush foliage and brilliant blooms for one a few moments before retracting, pulling back into the carpet of grass before the next set of plants pushed forth. 

Bulu was awake, upright, and listening. Zac watched the siblings 'communicate' through prods, spikes, and subtle sprouts.

Zac had seen this before -A rhythmic sprouting of unusual, diverse plants- but never with another Tapu. Before, the plants had bloomed when Bulu was alone. Why those plants? Zac wondered. Do they mean something? Whatever was happening, it was more than Zac could unravel.

"Hey Fernando, do you know much about plants?"

Wanda shot past the slowly falling Onix. She landed on a rocky outcrop, and found an interesting stone. Flames streamed from the shiny gem, attaching to her wrist and neck in flaming streamers. She crowed, and kicked back up the fissure, bouncing off the walls before colliding with Onix  and uppercutting the falling opponent back up to safe ground. 

Onix soared to safety, followed by a gout of flame and then Wanda herself. They were safe.



"Legend!" Zac shouted, vaulting the crack in the ground to check on Cian and Onix. Unfortunately, at that moment the ref ran over and snatched his whistle from around Nyx's neck.
