This was it. Bottom of the ninth. As flaming sand and chunks of volcanic ash rained down on Zac, he watched as furious bugs and Hyper Beams cut swathes out of his castle. 

REM went down, and Helen met the raging Terra head on with a skull-shaking TAKE DOWN that Zac heard from his castle walls. It was a mess. A glorious, fantastic, joyous mess that filled his belly with laughter. "Hey Eris! How ya holdin up?" Zac called to his friend. Her castle wasn't looking much better than his, but it had taken much less friendly fire.  

Zappa was busy at the castle gate, frantically putting up LIGHT SCREENS to try and block the MIRRORED ERUPTION. Odium was exhausted, slumped against a wall near the fainted bug he had just defeated. 

That left only Kev. Underground, the Steelix was still alive and kicking, and still in his mega form. Zac stamped on the packed sand, signaling for his best mate to pull off one last, daring attack. 

The sand shuddered, and Kev burrowed back upwards as he STEEL ROLLED through the sand, whirling like a 40ft long, solid steel Beyblade. If he emerged uncontested, his metal and crystal aura would cut some heavy damage into what remained of Eris's castle.

The ball sizzled past Zac before he had a chance to block. Spheal bounced happily along the sand, rolled to a stop, and then waddled back to Zac's side of the field. "That was one hell of a return!" Zac called, an excited grin spreading across his face. It was just the sort of opening shot he had expected from a veteran gym leader. Gotta bring my A-Game then.

Zac grabbed Sheal under one arm and called in Byron and Tempi for a quick huddle. "Alright guys, no more messin' around. Our reputation is on the line here." He gestured at the other side with a quick head nod. "That guy's an Ex-Gym Leader, alright?" Immediately. Tempi stood up straighter, competitive spirit flaring in his wet eyes. Byron didn't seem to care. Zac frowned, and through for a second before pointing straight at Infernape. "Also that monkey said he could beat you in a brawl, and that your first serve was weak." Byron let out a roar of outrage, and grabbed the ball from Zac. The Nidoking stormed towards the net, picking up speed. The earth shuddered and buckled underneath him, and a great EARTH POWER exploded under his feet, sending him skyward.

At the apex of his leap, Nidoking threw his head back and slammed it forward in a terrifying HEAD SMASH. The Spheal let out a squeak of surprised and shot towards Infernape, a blur of blubber and ice.

"Isn't he?" Zac breathed, shaking his head in amazement at the giant crab. "He's just a baby, really," he added. "Hatched barely two months ago and look at him now! Scoring goals with the best of them." Though, the crab had yet to actually score any points. Still, as with any sport it was the thought that counted.

As the ball came rocketing towards Kingler the crab brought up its claws. The pincers were shrouded in PROTECT and he punched the ball with all the repelling force he could muster.

The ICE SHARDS clattered against Kingler, shocking the crab. Were they meant to attack each other? So be it. Banjo scraped his claws together, sharpening them with his discordant SWORDS DANCE. 

"What are the chances?" Zac burst out, unable to contain his excitement. What were the chances they would have so many friends in common? "Liam and I go way back, and Adrian's a close friend of mine. I healed up his Pokemon after our battle. Vic's a young go-getter, and I respect the hell out of him. He showed Tapu Bulu a slick move or two." Zac was immensely proud of those three wonderful friends. 

"You can Lapras slide with Dunsparce, I know that much," Zac assured his newest friend. The ball returned, high and lazy and soaked in the summer sun.

"Ready Greg?" Zac shouted. He sprinted across the field towards his little monkey. The star player raised its arms in the universal 'pick me up' signal that all babies seem to come programmed with. Zac scooped up Greg, turned, and in one swift motion he slung the monkey up to meet the ball. 

Greg jabbed the ball down with a precise BRANCH POKE, and landed back on the sand, grinning wide in a primate TAUNT.

"How about something a little wilder?" Zac asked, an excited grin spreading across his face. He pressed the cola against his cheek, smothering the growing grin. You could almost hear the hiss of the chilled metal against his sunburnt skin.

"How about you use two. And I'll just use one." Zac hooked a thumb at a copse of shady palms, under which a vast, black shape was snoozing the afternoon away. "If you can wake Bulu up, you win," Zac said simply. "And if you get the lazy bugger fighting, then I'll throw in a case of Charja-Cola! How does that sound?"

ICE BEAM crackled along Tapu Bulu's flank, chilling the burned wood. In greater quantities, the ice might have been enough to slow the rampaging legendary down. It was a great start...but a start is all it would be.

Bulu slammed into Milotic with its horns, sucking the life out of the serpent and knocking it out with a single hit. It was brutal. It was uncompromising. It was the strength of nature, unbound and furious. 

But Volcarona was not as easily put down. The burning tree had been easily dispatched, and the retaliatory BUG BUZZ rattled Bulu, shaking its wooden form and vibrating its teeth. Despite the legendary's immense power, fighting an aerial opponent was just exhausting. Bulu glared up at Volcarona,  roared, and with an angry snort it turned around and stormed off into the thick coastal pines.

Zac let out a long breath, which turned into a chuckle. He patted Mason on the back. "Nice one mate! You woke Bulu up and managed to fight it off! That a bloody big win in my books." Zac was ecstatic. He'd gotten Bulu up and fighting multiple times today! Maybe there was hope for the lazy legendary after all. "Hey, uh, do you like Charja-Cola?"

The hardened Huntail chomped into Mantine, and the hail of BULLET SEEDS cut off abruptly. Mantine's took wing, fleeing the attacker and surging through the shallows as she looked for a place to ROOST. The SNARL of the Carvanah heightened her fear, and she ducked and dived, trying to avoid a knockout blow as the enemy hunted her.

Feraligatr had landed a solid hit on the gnashing fish, and she swam proudly up to the surface to accept her praise. "What? That battle's not over yet! What are ya doin?" Zac asked. Natsuki wasn't a seasoned battler, and she had just been happy that her attack hit. She sank back into the water, dejected. "No no no, c'mere girl. You did great," Zac said, recovering from his surprise quickly and bending down to scratch the scales of the big gator. "Reckon you can land a few more?" he asked, and Natsuki nodded enthusiastically, mouth open wide in a dangerous smile. "Great! Get back in there and bite that eel!"

Zac was super interested in travel tips, especially for the exotic country of Unova, but it seemed like holidaying tips would have to wait as Bulu was now most definitely awake. "Well that's worth a case of Charja-Cola easy," Zac said, grinning as he watched Vic's Dragonite tear the tree to woodchips. 

Bulu slammed the ground with its clanging hooves, and the foliage around them shuddered. Trees creaked and swelled, grass squirmed and tangled, growing as thick as a bed of snakes, and the greenery blowing in the wind burst into grasping, tangling thorns that slashed at Dragonite.

"Get down mate!" Zac shouted. He reached out to grab Vic and pull him to cover as the arena was overwhelmed with the attack. NATURE'S MADNESS had lived up to its name, and transformed the woodchips and blowing leaves into a storm of vicious briars that stung with Fairy energy.

It was Tapu Bulu's ultimate attack, and it embodied the spirit of the Alolan wilds: immense, brutal, and overwhelming. 

Bulu used NATURE'S MADNESS

Bulu cracked an eye open. Zac wincing slightly as the tail slapped the legendary right in its exposed eyeball. Bulu let out a pained snort. "Well, that's one way to get it up and moving,"
Zac said, as Bulu tipped its head sharply to the side, trying to throw off the Skitty.

"I've never had cats," Zac admitted, taking a sip of his Charja-Cola.  "But they seem like good companions." He thought for a moment. "Do you think I should get a cat?"

Volcarona's FIERY DANCE sizzled against the rain of milk, covering the battlefield in a haze of milky steam. The humidity rose, and found himself soaked, steamed, and sweating. 

As Bulu tore another pine out of the sandy soil, an inferno swirled around the legendary. Bulu roared again, and HURLED THE FLAMING TREE at the flying opponent. 

As Miliotic approached, Bulu set its eyes on the serpent. It poured at the ground, carving a deep gash in the sizzling sands, before charging head-first at the serpent with a bone-shuddering HORN LEECH. 

Bulu didn't have anything to prove in this battle. These opponents were merely minor obstacles between the legendary and its next nap. Once they were defeated, Tapu Bulu could rest easy again. 


Bulu threw another tree at Volcarona
Bulu used HORN LEECH on the Milotic

"Oh yeah?" Zac asked, incredibly interested as soon as the word 'friends' was mentioned. "Who are your friends? Maybe I've battled some of them today!"

The Sphealball shot past Greg and bounced along the sand. The little monkey let out a scream of range and started to bang on Kingler with his stick. The big crab snipped at Greg, driving him off. 

Zac picked up the ball and served it back over the net. "I'm a big fan of 's extreme Lapras sliding, and Poke-team competitive eating is all the rage this season. Been in a couple of matches myself now that it's watermelon season!"

Tyranitar fell back, panting. He took shelter under the broken ramparts as waves of DISCHARGE crackled across the castle. When he was recharged, he firing off another HYPER BEAM at the skittering Twitch!

Meanwhile, Zappa was chasing the spider across the walls! The Heliolisk BULLDOZED chunks of the wall, trying to shake Twitch's footing and dump the bug into the path of the HYPER BEAM. 

Helen the Camerupt trundled towards Eris' castle. This was endgame, and the mobile volcano ERUPTED, raining flaming chunks down on Terra, Pepper, Hati, and Zen.

Kev was tearing things apart. His aura of steel and crystal slashed at any enemies who got too close, cutting Terra as the ape attacked. He met the SUPERPOWER head on, clanging and crashing as he struggled against the unrestrained force of the primate. Battered from the fight, Kev DUG down, away from the onslaught, avoiding most of the incoming FLAMETHROWER and FREEZE DRY as he fled underground. 

REM shot confused DRAGON BREATH, covering himself in the painful, azure flames in a last ditch attempt to get the bell off him!

Desc: When Hypno opened a Fissure on the beach during a volleyball match against , Wanda the Blaziken dove in to save her opponent, finding the Mega Stone and Mega Evolving for the first time.

Updating descriptions of current mega stones

HERACRONITE
Desc: Zac recovered an golden scarab casket on a ruin raid with . He took it to the antiquities expert , and together they opened it, revealing the ancient stone.

STEELIXITE
Desc: During the adventour, Zac recovered multiple shards of this stone. When under attack by a nest of furious Heatran, Steelix responded to the shards. They fused, and Steelix Mega Evolved to fight off the legendaries.

SCEPTILITE
Desc: Zac's split of the ancient pirate treasure when he and reached the end of the haunted ruins.

KINGLERITE
Desc: Found in a puddle of milk during Rayquaza's attack on Sootopolis.

Zac shouted out as his friend's Onix was consumed by the growing FISSURE. "Wanda! Save him!"

The Blaziken sprinted up a growing jut of rock and kicked off, soaring through the air above the deadly gap. She tucked in her arms, and dove straight down into the unknown with an aptly named BRAVE BIRD.  

90-100: Blaziken MEGA EVOLVES (I'll buy the stone)
50-89: Blaziken saves the day
25-49: Blaziken faints
0-24: Blaziken makes things worse
