The wash of ice water wasn't enough to wake Bulu. The chilled waters soaked into its wooden skin, and splashed the nearby foliage, and were quickly absorbed by the thirsty plants. 

The bed of grass under Bulu swelled with fresh, springy growths, and the legendary seemed to fall deeper asleep.

"No luck there mate, Bulu loves a misting." Zac scratched his beard. "I'll tell ya what, make it a 2 on 1. See what you can get done with twice the power."


Bulu was hit with ICE BEAM
Bulu loved it!

Static burst along the length of the massive darner. Yanmega's slick, surprising movements descended into jerky, jittery burst of energy, stopping and starting as if the bug was short-circuiting before completing its pathfinding.

Buzz had become Bzzt.

"Don't get too close!" Zac said, usefully. "That zapper's got a wicked magnetic field!" 

Buzz hovered a few meters away, unsure of how to approach this metal opponent. Air Slashed had bounced off its hide. Ancient Power had rocked it, but the cost of her mobility. She beat her wings, forcing movement through the jumping muscles as she sent a shuddering BUG BUZZ at the machine, hoping to shake loose some internal component. 


Buzz used Bug Buzz!

Zac tossed the Spheal high into the air. His Poliwrath moved underneath to catch it. He fumbled, but managed to grab a hold of the slippery sphere before it hit the sand. "Nice catch!" Zac said, slapping the Pokemon on the shoulder. 

Their opponent arrived, and Zac waved enthusiastically. "Hey there mate! The name's Zac Ramsay, nice to meet ya!" Zac's Pokemon waved too, and the announcer prepared to start the match.

"Morning! I'm here for the gym battle with my best mate Melody!" Zac said to the receptionist. They checked their list, confirmed the reservation, they even tactfully avoided mentioning that he was a few minutes late, and they directed Zac over to the comfortable waiting area.

Zac sat down, put down the present he had brought for Melody, and sent out all of his Pokemon. A bit of a stretch and some fresh, ocean air would help them relax before the match. 

Some of them were still sandy from playing on the beach, and Grooky had somehow lost his twig and was using a popsicle stick instead. "Wha-? Greg! Where's ya bloody stick?" The monkey just grinned at him, showing too many teeth.

Zac had been up since early morning baking with Boshi. The pair of them were award winning pastry chefs, and Zac had even adapted his famous recipe to make something special just for Michi. 

"I call it Pie-roar!" Zac said proudly, setting the creation down on the food table. The pie had been cut into the shape of a Pyroar (Michi's favorite Pokemon) and was even wrapped in a decorative fabric bearing dozens of images of the Pokemon's likeness. 


"It's a spicy fruit pie. Lots of Liechi, Cherri, and Figy, and a good hit of cinnamon to really bring out that gentle heat."

Zac wasn't heading how. Not yet, and maybe not tomorrow either. Not with so many juicy battles to be had, and definitely not with so much Charja-Cola flowing through his body! He looked around for another battle partner, and spotted a woman walking near an empty battlefield. 

"Hey there!" Zac called, jogging over to Emma and sticking out a huge hand in greeting. "The name's Zac Ramsay. You looking for a battle?"

"Ready when you are!" Zac called to his newest opponent. The referee had handed them the sizzling, Darumaka ball, and the match was about to begin.

Zac looked around at his team. Sneg, the Exeggutor, the perfect blocker. Banjo, the Kingler, for power. And of course Tapu Bulu, for, well, uh, the palm trees growing around it were nice and shady. 


Rules for Darumakaball!

Zac returned Stormy's embrace, looking around the table with unsteady eyes. He took another drink. 

Fernando mentioned a bet, and his ears perked up. A competition? This is the most exciting thing since agreed to shave her head! Zac wasn't a fan of free drinks, but he was a fan of making other people happy. And boy did they seem happy about this.

"!" Zac called, shouting across the bar so that his best buddy could hear him. "If you do that thing Fern wants I'll launch a new flavor of Charja-Cola for your dogs!"

Someway. Somehow Natsuki had pulled the victory out of NOWHERE! "Atta girl!" Zac said, leaping onto the main pontoon to give his gator a victory scratch. He scritched the scales up behind her ears, just the way she liked. "You're a legend! Amazing work Natsuki!" Zac hugged the smiling gator, and then encouraged her to go for a swim to cool off. She obliged, diving into the waters outside the main arena.

"Next? Okay let's see here...If you've got Empoleon then I'll counter with..."

Zac slapped the water, and his second Pokemon emerged. He was all thin legs and big claws. Banjo the Kingler! Banjo bubbled in apprehension. Empoleon looked like a tough opponent. 

To start off the round, Kingler slammed his claw down on the pontoon, the CRABHAMMER setting the arena rocking, and possibly throwing Empoleon off balance.

Zac was starting to sweat. "Come on Sneg! Just hammer him already!" The Exeggutor slammed down with another IRON HEAD, cratering the sands and missing his target. The tropical giant let out a long, mournful sound.

"You've gotta look where he's going, now where he is!" Zac called, helpfully. He checked his watch. They needed to wrap this battle up fast. The ice cream eating contest was about to start! "One more! Go go go!" Zac shouted, and Sneg hurled himself at his enemy, swinging his head once more at the nimble foe. 

Sneg used IRON HEAD!

"We will do this again. And soon!" Zac said, heading towards the water. He had on his favorite Pyukumuku patterned Alolan shirt, and a pair of Kyle Krush board shorts that had a surfing Mightyena on them. "Come on Nana!" Zac called, beckoning the old bird to join them down by the shore. She picked herself up, casting a grumpy glare at Dolly, and walked slowly past them and into the surf, ruffling her feathers as the salty waters cooled her. 

"She looks better already! And I feel better." Zac let out a big sigh, grinning at his favorite doctor. "Thanks Eva. It means a lot knowing I have a friend like you. I appreciate your hospitality, and I can promise that I don't snore. At least, not that I've ever heard." He grinned, and ran into the waves.

A boom of ripe, summer thunder shook the foliage around Bulu! Leaves tore and ripped, boughs creaked, and electricity crackled across the surface of the snoozing legendary. Bulu rolled over in their sleep, as if to escape someone lightly tickling their nose.

"Komala, ay?" Zac asked, scratching his beard. He had one of the cute little Alolan marsupials back at his house, but he hadn't thought about cross-training it with Tapu Bulu. "Hell, I'll try anything at this point!"

The WATER PULSE shot Volcarona out of the sky. She fell in a confused tumble of sizzling wings, landing hard on the wet sand. "Better luck next time," Zac said, returning her. "Okay, and now let's see how you handle the final challenge: Tapu Bulu!"

Zac gestured over to where the legendary was snoozing under some palm trees. It seemed to have no interest in the battle that it was apparently a part of, and was content to just nap. "See if you can wake Bulu up!"
 

Volcarona was hit by WATER PULSE

Zac sent out Tapu Bulu!

The tournament organizers had set up convenient platforms just past the breakwater, and Zac stood opposite his opponent, ready for their underwater battle.

"Nice to meet ya mate!" Zac called to his newest friend. "Damn great day to be out on the water, ay?" 

Salt water washed over the platform, flowing over Zac's flip-flops and soaking his feet. Around the platform, two Pokemon swam in the depths: Feraligatr and Mantine. Feraligatr kept to the sandy bottom, moving in and out of the huge, sunken wreck. Mantine soared just below the surface, wings slowly beating like a bird in slow motion.

"Not just awake," Zac clarified, as he watched the Dragonite emerge. "Up and battling. Getting him to open those big, beautiful eyes is just half of the challenge."

Aqua Tail slammed into Bulu, but the water disappeared into the jungle foliage surrounding the legendary. The palm trees sprouted new, fresh greenery, and the dense tangle of dune grass surged below the bull, thickening into more cushy bedding. Bulu's head swayed a little, before falling back into the grass; still asleep. 

"Nice hit!" Zac said, encouragingly, "Keep it up and you might be getting some cola!"
