Zac retracted his hand a second or two after it became awkward. Hey, some people just aren't shakers. 

"Thanks! Can't take any credit for it though. It is an heirloom though, so it's got sentimental value," he said, laughing at his own joke. "Yeah! I've been battling up and down the beach all day." It wasn't an exaggeration either. He'd been far out past the breakwater to battle on pontoons and between sunken ships, up in the dunes for sky battles with legendaries and normal Pokemon alike, and had played volleyball on at least a dozen separate occasions. If it wasn't for his avatar healing Zac would have been as bright as his hair. "What about you? Oh! I never got your name, miss....?"

"Bloody hell! Invaders!" shouted Zac, unknowingly echoing Eris's sentiment from the other side of the battlefield. "Odium! Get 'em outta here!" 

Odium was slow and jittery, but that just gave him more time to line up. He growled, a deep, resonant rumble that broadened until he sounded like a lase canon powering up. Twitch's Bug Buzz shook apart a rampart, which collapsed on Odium, only for the sand to be blown away a second later in a wave of white heat as his HYPER BEAM carved a path through Zac's castle! 

Kev's body shuddered and rang with the headbutt, and the cold set into his joints. He was already cold steel but the combination of YAWN and BLIZZARD had slowed him to a crawl. He closed his red eyes, ASLEEP and FROZEN.

"Kev! Now!" Zac yelled, slapping the MEGA STONE on his wrist. Crystal blue light tore through Kev's body, and his eyes flew open. They were the blue of buried glaciers. Pillars of crystal ruptured through his steel body, and an aura of metal and gemstone slashed at the enemies around him. Kev reared up, and brought himself down on Terra with an earth-shattering HEAD SMASH!

Belle's WRAP tangled REM, and the Flygon made a clumsy landing. He BIT at the annoying little wind chime, trying to pull it off so that he could take flight once again. Every knew that air-superiority was nine tenths of every battle.

Davenport was nestled snuggly in the castle wall. As Zen SLAMMED him with her tail, the mischievous Minior gave a placid smile, and EXPLODED.

"Hey, if it wasn't legal then the ref would be blowing his whistle right about now," Zac said, as the referee looked around fervently for his whistle. 

Cian's return soared over the net, and Blaziken kicked off the sleeping Bulu to intercept the shot. Her sizzling legs smacked the Spheal back towards the other team. BLAZE KICK!

Samu hesitated. "Come on, share with your new mate!" Zac called, warming the walrus's chilled heart. She nudged the egg closer to Kabutops. 

Nearby, Tapu Bulu was asleep under the palm tree. It seemed like the 'battle' was turning into more of a picnic. Zac sat down in the sand under the shade of one of Bulu's trees. He patted the sand next to him. "Let's just watch 'em play for a while. They seem to be having fun."

"Whoa! You sure have!" Zac exclaimed, as Bo's Scraggy demolished the watermelon in record time. It was sucking down sliced like they were jello shots and he was a 21 year old party girl. In seconds the whole melon was gone, and Scraggy was looking a tad green. "Uhh, either that or you haven't been feeding them."

Meg was up next. She opened her powerful, turtle jaw and took a straight-up bite out of the uncracked melon. Her beak cut through rind and flesh alike, and she chewed casually, pink juice spilling onto the table. She was in no hurry. "Come on! Hurry up Meg!" Zac said, noticing how fast the other compeitiors were eating. "Go! Go! Go!" Meg went went went, finishing off the melon in one more bite.

"Set!" Zac shouted, tossing the Darumaka high into the air in what was definitely not a regulation set. Sneg the Exeggutor stomped two steps forward and swung his head at the ball, catching it at its zenith with a shuddering DRAGON HAMMER. The Darumaka rocketed downwards at a sharp angle, driving towards the sands.

Zac slapped the base of Sneg supportively. "Nice one, mate. You're getting pretty damn good with that timing!"

"Hey Chloe!" Zac smiled, before going in for a hug. "Of course you'd be here, ya little go-getter! How have ya been?" 

Zac had been wandering the beach all day, battling, volleyballing, and even winning a watermelon-eating contest. Well, winning was a relative term, but as far as Zac was concerned anyone who got to eat a whole watermelon was a winner.

"Yeah I'm free for a battle. Here, cool off a bit, you're looking a bit red," he said, passing Chloe an ice cold Charja-Cola right from the back of his Rotom fridge. "What did you have in mind?"

"Ha! That's the spirit mate! But I don't like your chances!" 

They made it to the tent just in time. Zac signed them up, administered revives, and soon they were lined up and ready to start. Each Pokemon had a whole watermelon in front of it. 

"Eat as much as you can, but make sure you don't hurl!" Said the announcer. Zac nodded, this wasn't his first 7v7 Pokemon battle/watermelon eating contest. "Aaaaaaand GO!" cried the announcer. Her Doduo HONKED loudly in place of an airhorn, signaling the start of the contest.

Tangrowth was up first. The massive heap of vines wrapped its appendages around the watermelon and sucked out the nutrients. Her blue vines took on a purple tint as the juices flowed into her. In seconds the fruit was a withered, desiccated pit, no larger than a crumpled up sock.

Zac was as shocked at his opponent. "Uh, it's called 'V-Create'. It's supposed to be only usable by Victini, a legendary gremlin from Unova." He turned on Nyx, about to scold the Pokemon for being so reckless. There was a strange, powerful look in Nyx's eyes that made Zac think twice. If Nyx used V-Create... He looked over the white and pink fur of the 'Hypno'. Could Nyx be channeling the spirit of the dead Victini?

It was a wild thought, and one that was dangerously close to distracting Zac from the most pressing matter: the oncoming watermelon eating contest! "Here!" Zac said, tossing a revive to Boruta for his Rhyhorn. He had been tempted to pass the man a Charja-Cola, but while the soda could do many things, it couldn't replace standard medicine (yet).

"Sorry about that blast! I'll pay for entry to the contest to make it up to you, but we've gotta get going mate, or else they'll start without us!" Zac returned Nyx, and headed off down the beach towards the red and green tent.

Hitmonlee's attack connects, bruising Swampert but failing to knock her over.  Swampert is just too stocky to be knocked over like that. Too low to the ground. She lets out a wet, hiccupping victory noise. "Nice work!" Zac says, calling his congratulations from up the line.

Zac: 1 point

Next up is Byron, the Nidoking. He's sore from his loss to @rowan's Poliwrath, and ready to kick some serious...goo? Some serious shadow? Looking at Pryde's team it was hard to formulate a plan of attack. Would he be slamming away at a robot? Or maybe at another Nidoking? "Play nice. We're here to have fun mate," Zac advised. Byron ignored him. 

Well, if Hitmonlee could use his legs, then Byron could use his head for one. He reared back, bringing his thick skull forward in a devastating HEAD SMASH!

"Hell yeah Lyra! That's the spirit! Nice to meet ya, I'm Zac Ramsay!" Zac yearned to go and shake the youth's hand, but that would have to wait until after the match. 

The youngster looked like a new trainer, and a quick check of the league records confirmed that. Zac picked his team accordingly. 

He had Morelull, a delightful little nightlight mushroom, who would brighten the evening arena. Skiddo, who was a new catch and just bursting with summer energy. And Tapu Bulu, guardian spirit of Alola. The great, black, bull was snoozing peacefully in the corner of the court, completely uninterested in the game. 

"Serve when ready!" Zac called, grinning. The match was about to begin.

"Good thing we're in the water then. Easy enough to cool off when you're at the beach!"

Lar's return came floating gently back over the net. Blastoise summoned a surging wave, and SURFED high above the net. At the peak of the wave, Blastoise jumped and spiked the shot onto Lars' side with a two-handed blow! Zac's team had lost enough volleyball matches today, and this time they weren't taking any chances!

"Two Pokemon sounds great! One at a time or a double battle?" Zac asked, weighing up the challenger. She looked young, a fairly new trainer most likely. Zac ran a quick check on her details, and the league network popped up the expected result: no badges. He picked a team accordingly.

They found an unused arena down near the water. The sand was firmer here, and a little cold underfoot from the encroaching tide. "I've got Ledian and Maractus," Zac said, sending out the polar opposites. Maractus dug his stubby feet into the sand, and Ledian floated a few inches above, her reflective watching something unknowable. "Who are you battling with today?"

The flames licked Bulu's blackened skin, but failed to catch. it was like trying to reignite a brick of charcoal, long after it had gone out. "Fire isn't going to help you much here mate," Zac advised, as Bulu let out a sleep-snort. "Bulu was permenantly charred from our encounter at the Vital Spirit festival. Unless you're packing more magma than a Heatran I don't think it's gonna be fazed."  

Zac took a sip of his own Charja-Cola, thinking to himself. "You can use two Pokemon, if you want?"

Banjo grew hard-edged, and with a gleam of sunlight on sharpened shell, Kingler brought up his claw, meeting Empoleon's slash. CLANG! Sparks scatted across the pontoon. There were no soft noodles in this spicy battle. 

The crab pushed the attack, holding off Empoleon with his larger claw and jabbing forward with the smaller one. The RAZOR SHELL of the claw whistled as it sliced through the air.
