Chu-e spots the man coming from a mile away. There isn't some call to action, some defensive maneuvers. Hell, he doesn't call out one of the pokemon he does have with him. They just sit there and slowly pick sand off of their tongue.[break][break]

Michael Navidson was a lot different in person. Taller than him, yet still not as tall as expected. Photos could never quite match up, it seemed. The images in the press, fan-sites, or from certain hacked cameras could never compare, though. Not with someone like Navidson.[break][break]

Chu-e had never met the man and had truly hoped he never would, if only for something as awkward as this. It wasn't Navy's fault that he stood up larger than life in some frames of the League. That, in of itself, was enough to make Chu-e suspicious. He had worked, hunched over computer monitors in a dark room, for weeks. Scouring unsavory deep websites for any sniff of impurity from the other.[break][break]

Anything for Eris Halla.[break][break]

Chu-e only gives Navy a raised brow and plucks another piece of grit from his mouth.[break][break]

"You assume I don't miss her, then?"[break][break]

It's blase. Bored.[break][break]

Much like always, the snap back to reality is sudden and jarring.[break][break]

Chu-e pauses in twirling the rainbow colored crystal in their fingers. They open their mouth and allow the other shards they've found to spill out, wet with spit, onto the dirt. Their mouth is still filled with grit and dust. Fucking Pica.[break][break]

They only allow the most hateful of stares at the collection of gems before glancing around the area.[break][break]

Chu-e has no idea where they're at.[break][break]

How long ago had they wandered from howard slayte's little camp? Had the man even noticed? Would he even have cared? Too many questions that would sit tucked in his back pocket to mire over later.[break][break]

Chu-e wipes their chin with the back of their hand and looks over the harsh and jutting landscape of this place. Lucky that he didn't fall into a pit and die.[break][break]

A quick check reveals some pokeballs and his communicator. Not all of the balls are filled, left back at the camp with Howard, and the communicator seems to be experiencing some interference. How fun.[break][break]

Chu-e sighs and allows themselves to sit down on a large rock nearby and stew in the complex emotions of their own fading health for a few, long moments.[break][break]

Normally, Chu-e would recoil from such causal touches that they did not initiate. This time, though, they allow it. Kazimir Wynter's large arm drapes over them and it is warm. Chu-e closes their eyes and takes a shuddering breath.[break][break]

Whatever wars inside them comes to a forced peace as he stills it.[break][break]

"I appreciate it. But.... I have to stay here. It's safer for Eris Halla that way." They come out thick on his tongue. Like Chu-e might start to cry, but there is no sighs of it on their face. Even so, when they speak again, those terrible emotions are swallowed down.[break][break]

"She's safer without me. She can grow and be happy with less people trying to hurt for my connection. And she won't have to deal with my baggage, either. I'll stay here for her, even if I don't like it."

"I made them myself." For you. Doesn't quite reach it with the other words. Instead, Chu-e takes a small bite of his own sandwich to swallow down any other traitorous thoughts that might threaten to slip out.[break][break]

"I made sweet ones, too, if you would prefer those." A hand waves to inside the basket. A few more wrapped sandwiches are there, whipped cream and fruit in neat sliced sections.[break][break]

Chu-e is quiet again, then. Something wavers in his chest and he feels like it might burst. He hates it.[break][break]

Glancing up at the mood and stars that can be seen through the dappled treeline, he stays silent as they eat. It feels heavy with intention but he thinks that might just be because of him.

"I didn't put you in this hospital bed." It is an argument that does not dismiss the first statement. Or any time that jayden cross was hurt because of them before.[break][break]

The beast stalks closer and Chu-e just gives it an unimpressed look. There is a spike of annoyance, that this creature would interrupt when they were so busy spinning webs. To weave Jayden further into the wide net that Chu-e would cast over others.[break][break]

But, it did have the advantage of being cute.[break][break]

They stay in their seat thanks to Jayden's hold, but it does not stop them from leaning over. They stretch out and offer their hand to the white pokemon as Chu-e might any other feline. Relaxed, but careful.[break][break]

"I want to pet you." Spoken to the cat. It is less a suggestion and more an order.

Chu-e almost opened their mouth to protest. Almost. But in the end, they stayed silent at the warning and order. Chu-e remembered time when, broken and beaten, they had been forced onto battlefields in Kanto. 'Almost Dying' had never been a good enough reason in Rocket.[break][break]

"Still not used to Hoenn?" Was teased, but it didn't sound amused. Chu-e knit their brows together and plucked the photo delicately from howard slayte's hand to give it a closer look.[break][break]

A deep frown settled on their face.[break][break]

"I don't know how Hoenn hadn't collapsed in on itself yet." Was muttered now. Placing the photo back on the table, Chu-e circled Mauville, Fortree, and Lavaridge with their fingers. "These areas are all hollow underneath, too. Can this stuff spread?"[break][break]

A quirk of the lips- a real one. And shouldn't that have been warning of doom? More so than any slaps in the face, any glimpses behinds the curtain. Chu-e Choi looked at howard slayte with those dead fish eyes and smiled at the insults being thrown their way.[break][break]

"Hm. If you read my letters, you'd know I'd drop to my knees right here if you asked, dear." The way their tongue wraps around 'dear' is silky and smooth like velvet but equally oily. A plump olive bitten into fresh from the tree. Hard flesh being snapped into to leave behind an uncomfortable aftertaste. It is not sensual or heady or anything else one might want from a statement like that. It is nature's mockery.[break][break]

"Maybe I'm just curious about something." Chu-e shifts, loops their arm between Howard's and leans their head to pillow on the other's shoulder.[break][break]

"Or maybe I just want a plushie from the gift shop. Your nosy coworker is looking." The mask of serenity is back in place. The character of oh so in love valentine's date causing them to look up at Howard like they might actually someday love him.[break][break]

Disgusting.

While it came out as something similar to a joke, from the coy curl of Chu-e's lips to the glimmer in their eyes- there was an unmistakable note of bitterness hidden under the layers and layers of irony and subterfuge they wore like a second skin.[break][break]

"What you want is a punishment. Why do you think it's a reward?"

Unlike howard slayte, Chu-e didn't have a hair out of place. They were sitting perched on one of the more unimportant looking crates, a nail file in hand. Sharp edges being smoothed away with the careful grating from nimble fingers. Usual feigned passiveness was gone, replaced with mildly furrowed brows as they paid little attention to Howard or their surroundings.[break][break]

"Are the Beasts really so pathetic that Walsh would ask me of all people..." Howard might hear the irritated muttering as he finished up. An answer to a question he didn't ask. For the cosmic comedy of it.[break][break]

Blue eyes flicked up to regard Howard at the order, a small nod before pink Love Balls were flicked from their hand. A sharp whistle made the trio of pokemon's ears perk. The Mr. Mime vanished, but soon the gleam of Barriers would shimmer and warp around the whole base. The Carbink would chatter before burrowing into the ground at Chu-e's feet.[break][break]

Only the Delcatty would remain. A great, gluttonous, malicious beast. This was the kind of Shadow pokemon that many in Rocket whispered about. Malformed and mutated; the Delcatty wouldn't have fit inside the tent. Massive in sheer size on top of just being fat. She eyed Howard with some thinly veiled malevolence, licking her feline chops as if sizing him up for a meal.[break][break]

Chu-e grasped her by the chin and forced her face away from the Admin. She still gave Howard one lingering, hungry look before lumbering off to do patrols as ordered.[break][break]

Joining Howard in the tent, Chu-e walked over to inspect the notes as if they understood them.[break][break]

"Something troubling you, Slayte?"

A click of the tongue. There is a sharpness to Chu-e's tone that is usually absent. A slice into the careful acts and neutrality. Their nose wrinkles, a thin line of disgust on their face. Then it smooths back over, careful and calm one again. Whatever had been trying to resurface from that deep lake once again dark and placid.[break][break]

Chu-e crosses their arms over their chest.[break][break]

"It's terrible to lose that agency, isn't it? Everything you ever are or were stripped away. No matter what you do, other people will decide what you were. What do you think they'll make you, Slayte?"

Chu-e did not respond to the barb. There was not even a flicker of annoyance as they watched couples wander in front of the display to take pictures together. Not studying, but somewhere else.[break][break]

They had always had very pretty eyes. But in moments like this, with people like howard slayte, you could see the emptiness. More like a dead fish than a human. The caverns of what had been carved out of them something that could be looked into.[break][break]

"The original story is from Sinnoh. It started as an oral story around Solaceon before written language. A young woman steals a feather from Cresselia to trick a man into loving her. Darkrai seeks revenge for his sister and puts her into eternal sleep. The man confronts Darkrai. Realizes the woman tricked him, then dies anyway."[break][break]

Glancing over to Howard, Chu-e hums and tilts their head.[break][break]

"I like the original better. Stuff like this always feel like a... bastardization."

Chu-e looks up at Howard, face blotchy and the start of tears lingering in their eyes. Wide, blue and shimmering with hurt as howard slayte speaks. The coworker, of course, would see. The innocence brimming in the pinpricks of saline.[break][break]

But Howard would see it. With Chu-e's back to to the servers, and after coworker couldn't see their face any longer after wandering off, the countenance would fade. Sharp eyes would watch from the corner until they were far enough away.[break][break]

"You'll be fine. Just look me up."[break][break]

Whatever 'pain' from being stood up gone, falling from a flat tone. Chu-e allows themself to be tucked under Howard's arm, face turning away from the other to focus on a nearby exhibit.[break][break]

Chu-e knows what Howard will find. The 'accidentally' leaked mugshots from their arrest, Chu-e still bruised and sliced from their capture. Black crystal coating half of their face as they tried to force it to recede. Hair dirty and matted. If Howard really dug, they might find grainy pictures from Kanto. A muscular body before it melted away due to sickness.[break][break]

No one would recognize Chu-e as they were.[break][break]

"The story for that is wrong." Pointing at one of the holiday displays, a scene from some famous romantic story. A man and a woman in tight embrace, an effigy of Darkrai coiled around them as an ominous evil. A few pop-up signs explain the basic story, a tale of a man risking life and limb to wake his love from an eternal sleep. Of course, a happy ending. Yet, Chu-e had said it was wrong....
