With so many working pieces in Rocket, hell in the League as well, you would always have those who valued churning forward blindly. Chu-e hadn't been able to change that as an Underboss, he doubted that howard slayte as an Admin would have much chance.[break][break]

Chu-e finds themself sequestered into a dusty and unused corner. To outsiders, it would be two lovers stealing a moment alone on a romantic day.[break][break]

Analytic kick into overdrive, as it always does. Same height, but howard slayte was taller. Howard was faster and stronger physically, but he wasn't a killer. Chu-e couldn't overpower him, but a quick strike to the neck and maybe-[break][break]

They blink and try to tuck those shining innards back into themself, a shaky outward breath and quavering fingers the only sign of mild discomfort. They pick up one of the commemorative pencils and examine it closely. To avoid whatever reaction that Howard might have to the moment of weakness.[break][break]

"You are interesting." Is protested, quietly. They avoid the other's gaze, twisting the pencil between their fingers. Some poorly made bag in the the dirty corner pulling more attention.[break][break]

"You're not scared of me."[break][break]

A gentle sincerity. When Chu-e finally drags their eyes back up to meet Howard's, they are not empty. Something wounded and bleeding and lonely reflects out.[break][break]

Because Eris Halla was gone, for the better. Because Chu-e still saw how nervous he made Cillian Quinn sometimes. Because jayden cross had turned into some empty joke of who he was. Because everyone else was dead or never cared that much at all. Because Chu-e was alone.[break][break]

"Why?"[break][break]

A deep pleading bleeds into their voice. A deep shame.[break][break]

Chu-e looks conflicted for a moment.[break][break]

But then they tuck a stray piece of hair behind their ear and everything closes off once again.

But he doesn't voice it. Just contents himself with the knowledge that he will be scouring reports he shouldn't have access in the days to come.[break][break]

"Then you better work hard to stop all this, then."[break][break]

For the first time in a long time....[break][break]

Chu-e does feel a little better.[break][break]

Grasping Michael Navidson's hand again, this time he tries to gently form it into a fist.[break][break]

"Navidson, you need to understand that I am not like you. You are a wolf. You walk onto battlefields and bare your fangs and show your strength. You can walk into places and feel little fear of retaliation."[break][break]

A quick motion to himself.[break][break]

"I am a snake. I have to creep and sneak. I have to be quick so my poison stops my enemies, lest they cut off my head. What do you think would happen if, somehow, prying eyes caught us talking? That we parted ways with no signs of violence?"[break][break]

He allows Navy to mull his question over a moment.[break][break]

"Just hate me a little more, for my sake."

Chu-e's hand is not like Michael Navidson's. It is soft and fragile. There are many old scars, but whatever calluses he had in his youth are gone. Only the bony skin of the sick. Still, he squeezes with a firmness of surety.[break][break]

"When I was Underboss, I worked very hard to subterfuge my benefactors, Navidson. Just because I no longer hold that power means I gave up. They took more than my daughter away from me."[break][break]

Never one to answer a question directly, Chu-e just gives the other a wicked smile. It is as equally sharp and deadly as broken glass.[break][break]

A finger is raised to his lips.[break][break]

"But I need to go find my colleague before he misses me too much. We are very so stretched thin that I was asked out of my usual duties." It is said with intention.[break][break]

"Please punch me in the face as hard as you can, then we may part ways."

It's laced with a certain bitterness. There is an apology there. Fate had doomed Chu-e Choi long before his talk with Michael Navidson. Eris Halla would be one more in a long list of hurts he would cause and hearts he would break. It was painful.[break][break]

The idealistic place that Navy wanted, where Chu-e joined the League and then lived happily ever after, would never come to pass.[break][break]

But there were always other options.[break][break]

Chu-e offers his hand to the other. To shake.[break][break]

A devil offering a deal.[break][break]

Chu-e does not answer right away. Instead, he scoots over on his rock and pats it. Offering Michael Navidson a seat.[break][break]

When they speak again, they glance down at the ground. At the shimmering crystals and freshly turned earth.[break][break]

"People tried to kill me within the League's care. Those people did not care if they hurt her in the crossfire. Necrozma was my leverage to keep Rocket away from us. That's gone now, too."[break][break]

There is a lie hidden in there, too.[break][break]

A truth that Chu-e has not revealed to anyone.[break][break]

His lip trembles before he stills it with force, making them form into a thin line.[break][break]

"I will happily die with my daughter hating me if it means she has a chance at a normal life."[break][break]

Now, Chu-e stands. It is a slow, graceful rise to his full height. He steps closer to Navy. Chest to chest, for all that could be. Thin fingers ball into tight fists at his sides.[break][break]

Those usually empty, dead eyes burn with a deep fury inside of them. Not aimed at Navy. Not aimed at Eris Halla. Only for the deep self loathing that rings in his chest and the fate that has allowed this.[break][break]

His voice stays crisp but calm when he speaks, despite it.[break][break]

"Will you turn your back on her? Did I throw my chips into the wrong pile? Or will you be the man I can't be for her, Navidson?"

It almost sounds solemn.[break][break]

Chu-e takes a deep breath and sighs. Closes their eyes to calm the stirring of emotions in their chest.[break][break]

Because while Chu-e had done his research, Michael Navidson was not Kazimir Wynter. He was not Isaac Merlo. He was not any of the handful of people who Chu-e had allowed himself some moments of weakness. The mask would stay firmly in place. As much as it hurt, as much as it might piss Navy off, as much as it might paint him as far more cruel than he was.[break][break]

"Do you know about the honey, Navidson? What about Necrozma? I stay away by choice. I joined Rocket again by choice. That doesn't mean I like either of those things."[break][break]

It is as collected. Chu-e opens his eyes again and levels Navy with a searching look.[break][break]

There is an offer between those words. A magician willing to reveal a trick.

Chu-e spots the man coming from a mile away. There isn't some call to action, some defensive maneuvers. Hell, he doesn't call out one of the pokemon he does have with him. They just sit there and slowly pick sand off of their tongue.[break][break]

Michael Navidson was a lot different in person. Taller than him, yet still not as tall as expected. Photos could never quite match up, it seemed. The images in the press, fan-sites, or from certain hacked cameras could never compare, though. Not with someone like Navidson.[break][break]

Chu-e had never met the man and had truly hoped he never would, if only for something as awkward as this. It wasn't Navy's fault that he stood up larger than life in some frames of the League. That, in of itself, was enough to make Chu-e suspicious. He had worked, hunched over computer monitors in a dark room, for weeks. Scouring unsavory deep websites for any sniff of impurity from the other.[break][break]

Anything for Eris Halla.[break][break]

Chu-e only gives Navy a raised brow and plucks another piece of grit from his mouth.[break][break]

"You assume I don't miss her, then?"[break][break]

It's blase. Bored.[break][break]

Chu-e folds their fingers together and cups around their knee, tilting a head to wait for answer.

Much like always, the snap back to reality is sudden and jarring.[break][break]

Chu-e pauses in twirling the rainbow colored crystal in their fingers. They open their mouth and allow the other shards they've found to spill out, wet with spit, onto the dirt. Their mouth is still filled with grit and dust. Fucking Pica.[break][break]

They only allow the most hateful of stares at the collection of gems before glancing around the area.[break][break]

Chu-e has no idea where they're at.[break][break]

How long ago had they wandered from howard slayte's little camp? Had the man even noticed? Would he even have cared? Too many questions that would sit tucked in his back pocket to mire over later.[break][break]

Chu-e wipes their chin with the back of their hand and looks over the harsh and jutting landscape of this place. Lucky that he didn't fall into a pit and die.[break][break]

A quick check reveals some pokeballs and his communicator. Not all of the balls are filled, left back at the camp with Howard, and the communicator seems to be experiencing some interference. How fun.[break][break]

Chu-e sighs and allows themselves to sit down on a large rock nearby and stew in the complex emotions of their own fading health for a few, long moments.[break][break]

Normally, Chu-e would recoil from such causal touches that they did not initiate. This time, though, they allow it. Kazimir Wynter's large arm drapes over them and it is warm. Chu-e closes their eyes and takes a shuddering breath.[break][break]

Whatever wars inside them comes to a forced peace as he stills it.[break][break]

"I appreciate it. But.... I have to stay here. It's safer for Eris Halla that way." They come out thick on his tongue. Like Chu-e might start to cry, but there is no sighs of it on their face. Even so, when they speak again, those terrible emotions are swallowed down.[break][break]

"She's safer without me. She can grow and be happy with less people trying to hurt for my connection. And she won't have to deal with my baggage, either. I'll stay here for her, even if I don't like it."

"I made them myself." For you. Doesn't quite reach it with the other words. Instead, Chu-e takes a small bite of his own sandwich to swallow down any other traitorous thoughts that might threaten to slip out.[break][break]

"I made sweet ones, too, if you would prefer those." A hand waves to inside the basket. A few more wrapped sandwiches are there, whipped cream and fruit in neat sliced sections.[break][break]

Chu-e is quiet again, then. Something wavers in his chest and he feels like it might burst. He hates it.[break][break]

Glancing up at the mood and stars that can be seen through the dappled treeline, he stays silent as they eat. It feels heavy with intention but he thinks that might just be because of him.

"I didn't put you in this hospital bed." It is an argument that does not dismiss the first statement. Or any time that jayden cross was hurt because of them before.[break][break]

The beast stalks closer and Chu-e just gives it an unimpressed look. There is a spike of annoyance, that this creature would interrupt when they were so busy spinning webs. To weave Jayden further into the wide net that Chu-e would cast over others.[break][break]

But, it did have the advantage of being cute.[break][break]

They stay in their seat thanks to Jayden's hold, but it does not stop them from leaning over. They stretch out and offer their hand to the white pokemon as Chu-e might any other feline. Relaxed, but careful.[break][break]

"I want to pet you." Spoken to the cat. It is less a suggestion and more an order.

Chu-e almost opened their mouth to protest. Almost. But in the end, they stayed silent at the warning and order. Chu-e remembered time when, broken and beaten, they had been forced onto battlefields in Kanto. 'Almost Dying' had never been a good enough reason in Rocket.[break][break]

"Still not used to Hoenn?" Was teased, but it didn't sound amused. Chu-e knit their brows together and plucked the photo delicately from howard slayte's hand to give it a closer look.[break][break]

A deep frown settled on their face.[break][break]

"I don't know how Hoenn hadn't collapsed in on itself yet." Was muttered now. Placing the photo back on the table, Chu-e circled Mauville, Fortree, and Lavaridge with their fingers. "These areas are all hollow underneath, too. Can this stuff spread?"[break][break]
